2 months on the help desk has been an incredible learning experience. I am incredibly thankful to my company for taking a chance and hiring me, and to you people for following my journey. Not much has changed since the last video, which is a good thing.
I am much more comfortable doing my job now then last month. 2 months on the help desk helped me figure out what some of my weaknesses are in terms of tech knowledge and people skills. Since I have to pick up many phone calls, I have become so much better at holding conversations. My people skills have improved too. I find myself having better conversations outside of work now. I spend so much of my time talking that I have improved.
There are days where I have aggressive or angry customers on the line and I dread it. Those phone calls really work my patience. I do everything in my power to not become combative over the phone. Sometimes it is hard for me to understand that they are not mad at me but that they are mad that they have an issue. To be fair, it is hard to keep that in mind when someone is yelling at me. I feel like patience level lowers every time I have a difficult call.
My patience value was never particularly high to begin with but it has gotten worse. Maybe it is because I have to deal with people who know absolutely nothing about computers. Do not get me wrong, I expect them to know nothing, but it is still frustrating. The users do not know if they are on Windows 7 or Windows 10. Alternatively, the users who open the craziest links and install malware. The worst of the worst are the users who fall for the most obvious phishing attempts.
Since the users are clueless, they always find ways to break things. This is great for me. 2 months on the help desk has shown me so much. Everything from domain administration to fiddling with printers until they miraculously work. This may not be the super cool information security work I yearn to do it is still great fun. In some ways, it is almost like a messed up puzzle that we have to solve.
My stint here is short but it will be an enjoyable one. After I move on from the help desk, I will not look back. The common advice I see posted online is you should look to move up from the help desk after 6 months and the longest you should stay on is for 1 years. I plan to follow this advice. I expect to have my OSCP before winter. After I receive my OSCP, the options will open up.

This is a great video. I’m looking at getting a help desk job to begin my path to cybersecurity. I’ve been working at a public library for a few years now and seeing this video makes me realize a big part of my job is already help desk! I have to help people use the public access computers and the printer and the internet and it’s literally the same frustrations. Sometimes people call over the phone and need help using our eResources, or even just need help with their home computers. It was shocking when I first started seeing how computer illiterate so many people are. I’m used to it now, but it is truly surprising.

End users don't listen and troubleshoot per their own instructions after they have called in and are now talking to us. And when we give step by step help its always " well i don't think this will fix it." My thought " Well babe why did you call if you've got the solution?" I m in the process of quitting helpdesk. I don't have an interest in it beyond 1 year and thinking about the helpdesk is causing panic attacks. Talking all day is draining and depressing. Its a slow kill in my opinion.

    Hey man,
Currently transitioning out of the Air Force in less than a year and am looking into potentially getting into a help desk job as I have had an interest and passion for computers and troubleshooting since growing up working alongside my father who has his own IT business. My question is should I pursue any specific CompTia certificate to get my foot into the door with a company that may be looking for someone to do entry level things like this? I have the option to get the certificates basically paid for free by the Air Force, just want to make sure I'm taking full advantage of it and getting the right one. I wish my Air Force job translated a little bit more to the IT field but unfortunately it doesn't, I am a military police officer by trade, but I do have a ton of customer service experience as my job is essentially interacting with people all the time.
