    I like to think of it like this: Orcas represent a classroom full of ten year olds, and the blue whale is a substitute teacher who is stuck with them for a full school day. Six hours of nonstop aggressive misbehaviour by creatures half your size and you have no choice but to suffer through it and hope they eventually go away.

    Oh- and I can't believe you guys comepletely whiffed on the coolest two behaviors of Orca.... First, Orca in captivity are fed small fish for good behavior. Later, when the whales have time to rest bestween shows the regurgitate the fish near the edge of the pool, sit there and wait patiently for a heron or pelican to come try to clean it up, then when the bird goes for the fish, the orca grabs the stupid bird and eats it- then goes back for their bait! Also, there are several videos out there that show how orcas in Antarctica simoultaneously swim side by side towards an iceburg and at the last second they swim under it creating a huge wave that sweeps across the iceburg and sends the seal(s) sitting on top of it into the water.... Coolest part? Because they're swimming past the iceburg at a pretty solid clip, they have a watcher sitting nearby who's observing the whole ordeal and is responisible for picking off any seal swept into the ocean. These animals are smart AF!

      @@Chelbasaur Granted i was exaggerating when saying "Quite a few", you both are saying im right. And deaths by animals are always dwarfed by attacks by animals. Like sharks dont kill the vast majority of people they attack. Same with orcas; orca attacks on humans are rare even in the wild, but orca attacks on humans arent at all non-existent in the wild. Also people dont normally find themselves near orcas in the wild. Shark attacks are far more common because people and sharks both frequent beaches. Orcas dont frequent beaches.

    • @Chelbasaur
      @Chelbasaur 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@bloodydove5718 well considering the video is about wild orcas, and you mentioned events that happened only in captivity, I'm sure you can understand why anyone would think you're conflating the two. Orca regularly are near humans. There are pods of orcas that stay near the coasts all year round. New Zealand orca regularly interact with humans. There is a pod of orca that hang around fishing boats to nab some of the fish the people catch in I believe Iceland, or some northern-Atlantic area country, if I'm not mistaken. There have been maybe two or three reported attacks from orca in the wild, and none of them are decidedly intentional. Sharks will go after anything that moves because they're... well.... Not nearly as intelligent.

While there we learnt a story about how the orcas in this area used to help the whaling ships by herding the Humpbacks towards the ships. And then as payment the orcas would just take the Humpback’s tongue. Apparently whale tongue is a delicacy for orcas.

      @systlin2596 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@benoitgradel2080 We are, actually. About the time there's archeological evidence that we started eating meat is the same time that our brains got much bigger, and it's thought that the reason we were able to support our much increased brain activity (brains suck up a HUGE amount of energy, and account for a great deal of our daily caloric requirements) is because we not only began eating meat regularly, but specifically began evolving as endurance hunters.
      (Even our closes cousin, chimps, are similar. While not exclusively carnivorous and in fact wide omnivores like us, chimps can and do regularly hunt prey and eat it, though they are ambush predators rather than endurance hunters.)
      Humans actually require certain nutrients (vitamin B12) that are only found naturally in animal products. Modern vegans can supplement this with vitamin pills, but naturally we must consume at least some animal products (eggs, milk, or meat) to obtain this.
      Humans are actually the finest endurance athletes on the planet, bar none. Given 25-30 miles, nothing, but nothing can outrun or outlast a human in good physical condition. Not horses, not wolves, nothing. We evolved to jog after prey until it was so exhausted that it collapsed, and then we moved in, killed it, and lunchtime. Our hairless skin allows us to sweat and dump heat efficiently even in hot conditions during a midday hunt. Our jogging gait is perhaps the most efficient in the animal kingdom, and we've got features of our neck and hips, toes and tendons, inner ear and even how we store glycogen in our muscles that are specifically optimized for sustaining a jogging gait for many many miles as we chase prey.
      The only other animal nearly as good as us at endurance hunting is in fact wolves, and we actually hunt in similar ways in an endurance hunt. This is part of what made us such natural best friends; wolves hanging around our settlements to eat our scraps started hunting with us, and we encouraged this, and started breeding them to be more friendly and hunt better with us, and that's where the first dogs came from.
      But I digress. We are predators, but not ones that ONLY eat meat (our ability to eat nearly anything is another adaptation that has allowed us to be a remarkably resilient and widely adaptable species.) Our natural physical adaptations to this are not teeth and claws, but incredible endurance and high intelligence that allows us to form cooperative strategies and gives us the ability to make tools. Between the two, these have in fact made us not only apex predators, but an apex predator so dominant that no other predator on the planet can challenge us in any meaningful way.

      Kinda... But really the big ones, maybe orcas too, but maybe not, actually die of internal injury from their massive weight crushing them... They float in water all the time, no need for a rigid skeleton to support itself. Internal injuries rarely kill quick, and the damage accumulates as well.
      No doubt they dry the fuck out a lot in that time and that probably really messes them up too... All of it sounds horrid as I'm typing and thinking about it...

    • @Yal_Rathol
      @Yal_Rathol 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      SwayBack whales have rigid skeletons, they're mammals. same reason they breathe air and not water, because they're not fish, no matter how much they may look it.
      their hearts, lungs and other soft parts are the issue when they beach themselves, the support of the air is too weak to let their blood flow properly and keep their organs in the right position. so they will dry out, but that's usually a concern for a smaller creature like a dolphin. organ failure would get a beached blue whale long before dehydration did.

    One little note: Apex predator is an animal that has no consistent, significant natural predators. Killer whales can be killed by proper, massive whales, they still are apex predators. Humans not only are apex predators... we have ALWAYS been. There was never any animal that had humans consistently in its diet. You have to consider the ecology of an animal, you see, how it lives, how it feeds, how it grows... for example wolves are left alone by bears despite being much smaller, because wolves are always in packs. So the ecology of the animal, the fact it lives in packs, adds to its, shall we say, 'threat level' and capacity to hunt and defend itself.
    Now, how do humans live and always have lived? Yeah, together. Tribes of humans would (and still do) shoo away packs of lions to take their preys, hunt the bigger animals that were untouchable to everything else, and NOTHING could consistently hunt us. We ALWAYS had technology. we always had spears and sharp sticks and fire, contrary to what some people still believe, those are all things that we developed during our evolution and so they are an integral part of us. We are the deadliest throwers of the animal kingdom, we are of course deadly smart, and we have honey-badger levels of crazy bravery when needed. There is a hypothesis that megafauna only survived in Africa (We KILLED all the rest, the human driven extinction of animals started when we left Africa) Because it evolved to be scared shitless of us.
    ...so, yay humans :D

      Mycel consistent meaning regular: of course a big carnivore would sometimes find a loner or an unattended baby or whatnot. But cave bears, lions, crocodiles, nothing sets out looking for humans as preys or thinks 'preys' when looking at humans, that was what I meant.

    • @ponderwonder8125
      @ponderwonder8125 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      myky992 "little note"

    • @myky992
      @myky992 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Mycel We are talking about two different things here. What i was talking about is the ecological description of predation, basically if you hypothetically catch a member of that species, and look into its stomach, what are you likely to find? All the examples you provided are anecdotes, anomalies and/or animals that happened to have the opportunity to eat a human. It is also important to note that we are talking about human evolution, so we are onlytalking about african predators if you wanna point out a natural human predator.
      And you are also VASTLY underselling human abilities. First of all, Humans were always in groups, and armed. Our daylight eyesight is excellent, one of the best amongst all mammals. We can hear quite well. And it's not all about claws and teeth, humans, even alone, never back down, stand their ground, and can do so thanks to very good immune systems and hyper active scar tissue meaning we are far less likely to get an infection and die from a wound (still possible of course but much less than others) And in that respect, we are more similar to the honey badger.
      And no one fucks with the honey badger. The predator always makes a risk/reward analysis: "Should i specialize in hunting antelopes... or the crazy hairless screaming suicidal ape with sticks and stones and spears? Imma stick with the antelope..."

    Dead sharks release a scent that other sharks are immensely sensitive to the smell of. They will actually right themselves from the upsidedown catatonic state in order to swim away. They now use this chemical in shark repellent
