I think the part that sold it for me with realism in the smaller set-scenes was the lighting. Like in the beginning of the film, the lighting literally looks like sunlight from a window coming into a lego set.
Colider had a video where they went into some of the details of how it was accomplished, it was one of the "CGI artists react" but the basics of it was that they used a brand new rendering engine that were way better at simulating light sources and effects. It's something like traditional animation could do like 4, standard film cameras can capture 12 and this new engine could do over 20. I'm explaining it poorly but yeah, the lighting was the key to making it so realistic looking.
Why dose this man some how always get out of hand and get from talking about one thing and then talking about a completely different thing. Its amazing
Funny thing about The Lego Movie, When I was in high school, not too long after the release of The Lego Movie, my media teacher was showing us examples of stop motion animation, and she used The Lego Movie as her example. I'm a bit of a Lego nerd, and I already knew at the time that the movie was not only not stop motion, but even occasionally broke the limits of what Lego bricks are capable of, something I knew straight off the bat, because when Emmet stretches back in the first scene of the movie, he stretches the entire way back, which is impossible for the leg pieces to do. I attempted to explain this to my media teacher, but I got a detention for telling her that the movie wasn't actually stop motion, and I think I was barred from the rest of the class for that day.
Cory R Wow that sucks. My math teachers would welcome other methods of solving a problem, but of course they still made sure that the student understood the concepts they were teaching first.

I'll leave out some details but that aircraft tracking software is used for ships as well, and someone once spent hours sailing a US aircraft carrier, the most expensive ship/ piece of military equipment in the world, drawing a dick with it.
This is really late but for whoever is reading this, my favourite maritime story was of a (i dont know navy terms) petty officer. He was making rounds early in the morning around 4am-8am cleaning everything. He ended up in dinning room and who else is there but the literal captain of the ship. The captain looks grubby, eyes almost shut, with coffee in his hand, and sunlight in his eyes. so he picks up his radio and communicates with the cockpit (actual term) and says "maintian speed, 15° portside°" the huge af aircraft carrier after a min or so completes the turn and the sun light is no longer in his eyes. The officer couldnt belive he made this billion dollar machine turn just so the sun was shining light in his eyes, the captain knowing the power he has, just put the coffee down, looked at the officer and smirked. What a power move

In WoW (Warlords of Draenor specifically) there is a quest where you pick up a keg of gunpowder and have to run back to turn it in, ultimately blowing up the building you took it from. And then dusted with cinnamon sugar, yum. And I don't care who you are the burger maker was best. Burgers were graham cracker crumbs and peanut butter and cocoa powder you mixed together with the toy. Grill marks were a cocoa powder dusting. In WoW (Warlords of Draenor specifically) there is a quest where you pick up a keg of gunpowder and have to run back to turn it in, ultimately blowing up the building you took it from. You leave a trail all along the way, and when you set it off a flame travels down the path.
You already know where this is going.
