    I think the part that sold it for me with realism in the smaller set-scenes was the lighting. Like in the beginning of the film, the lighting literally looks like sunlight from a window coming into a lego set.

    • @RandomCarrot2806
      @RandomCarrot2806 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Colider had a video where they went into some of the details of how it was accomplished, it was one of the "CGI artists react" but the basics of it was that they used a brand new rendering engine that were way better at simulating light sources and effects. It's something like traditional animation could do like 4, standard film cameras can capture 12 and this new engine could do over 20. I'm explaining it poorly but yeah, the lighting was the key to making it so realistic looking.

    Funny thing about The Lego Movie,
    When I was in high school, not too long after the release of The Lego Movie, my media teacher was showing us examples of stop motion animation, and she used The Lego Movie as her example. I'm a bit of a Lego nerd, and I already knew at the time that the movie was not only not stop motion, but even occasionally broke the limits of what Lego bricks are capable of, something I knew straight off the bat, because when Emmet stretches back in the first scene of the movie, he stretches the entire way back, which is impossible for the leg pieces to do.
    I attempted to explain this to my media teacher, but I got a detention for telling her that the movie wasn't actually stop motion, and I think I was barred from the rest of the class for that day.

      This is really late but for whoever is reading this, my favourite maritime story was of a (i dont know navy terms) petty officer. He was making rounds early in the morning around 4am-8am cleaning everything. He ended up in dinning room and who else is there but the literal captain of the ship. The captain looks grubby, eyes almost shut, with coffee in his hand, and sunlight in his eyes. so he picks up his radio and communicates with the cockpit (actual term) and says "maintian speed, 15° portside°" the huge af aircraft carrier after a min or so completes the turn and the sun light is no longer in his eyes. The officer couldnt belive he made this billion dollar machine turn just so the sun was shining light in his eyes, the captain knowing the power he has, just put the coffee down, looked at the officer and smirked.
      What a power move

    One of the reasons it looks so real and cinemacic is because they used the ACES color space which allows you to get up to 25 stops of dynamic range (good cameras manage 13, ARRI alexa can reach around 15 and a human eye is at about 20 stops) This gives you extreme flexibility in color grading and makes tho shot look more "cinematic"

    Fun fact, a few shots in the main film are actually done with stop motion, a challenge they put to themselves to sell the stop motion like cgi stylization. You can identify the scenes that use actual LEGO by the fact that those scenes don’t have a molding line on emmet’s hair, because the actual hair pieces are made with a seamless molding process. One such shot is emmet dancing on a girder during the everything is awesome montage, saying he could dance for 8 hours.

    In WoW (Warlords of Draenor specifically) there is a quest where you pick up a keg of gunpowder and have to run back to turn it in, ultimately blowing up the building you took it from. You leave a trail all along the way, and when you set it off a flame travels down the path.
    You already know where this is going.

    I do have a real thought, instead of books, a dead media that only reaches a few people that are very interested in the subject, you won't reach a new audience...
    You're using the right medium here for Karl's "books".
    I'd suggest extended, in depth episodes, 30min area, possible multiple 10-30min augments that you release over time as research and dive balls deep in these subjects to give us the most info you can, multiple episodes would allow viewers to contribute over time with submissions, and of course you'd have time between episodes to dive even deeper in these subjects!

      SwayBack Umm... books are definitely not dead. Fahrenheit 451 much? Wait, you won't get that reference because you think books are dead... Books might not be "trendy" but will always be "a thing."

    • @paddiecorley1108

    • @Excludos
      @Excludos 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      FlyfishermanMike ironically I only know what Fahrenheit 451 is through videos and games... as someone who reads 20+ books a year, I'll easily join the "books are dead" sentiment. Not because literally no one reads them, but because very few does. You're going to have a much larger audience outreach through an easily viewed video.

    I had several of those McDonald's food toys as a kid. Much fun.
    Juice dispenser was boring because all it did was slosh around what you put in there.
    Fries was a crimper you put uncrusted bread in. And then dusted with cinnamon sugar, yum.
    And I don't care who you are the burger maker was best.
    Burgers were graham cracker crumbs and peanut butter and cocoa powder you mixed together with the toy. Grill marks were a cocoa powder dusting. Condiments were frosting and the buns were nilla wafers.

    I suppose part of the reason kids aspire to work at McDonald's is because from their perspective, McDonald's workers are the people who bring them their food/ happy meal toys. The kids aren't aware of the minimum wage or having to deal with entitled customers, so to them, the job just looks fun.
