  • We know. This video title sounds like the plot to that dumb movie starring Mark Wahlberg. But believe it or not, there really is a plant out there that will make you take your own life.

I've encountered this plant on Koh Samui in Thailand. Whilst hiking through a rivertrail, one leaf touched my left thigh. Two weeks bedridden, vomitting, high fever, delusions, extreme pain, the whole package. Took months to get proper motor function back in my left leg.
No joke, this plant is seriously dangerous.
Cool fact: In older Thailand culture, heinous crimes where punished by wipping the guilty with the bush, and leaving them in pain. Lovely

In Australia, all stinging plants have another 'antidote plant' nearby, within metres. My father was stung by a gympie gympie and immediately grabbed the antidote's leaf, and squeezed the gel like substance over the sting site. It quelled the pain. Just knowledge that's been passed down.

    @fuzzwobble 3 ปีที่แล้ว +55

In Australia there's a whole array of these bushes. You can tell them because they have a sort of 'fuzz' on them. It gives them a weird shimmer or shine. Funnily enough, modern video games that have characters with fur often make that shine over it for 'hyper-realism' but it's actually an effect in real life on a certain type of plant.
Basically we would see this 'shimmer' and know not to touch the plant, because one or some of these three things would happen:
    1) You get stung, usually with the skin itching horribly for a long time
    2) It's sticky and hard to wash off, and trying to push the plant off of you can be comical if it's sticky enough
    3) Neither of those, but it feels surreal and gross, like a plant-based face stubble, so you genuinely don't want to touch it just for tactile reasons alone
So yeah, watch for the fuzzy shine, lads.

But, apparently, one of the soldiers was in the field and had to poop. He wiped himself with one of these. He ended up shooting himself in the head that night or the next day in the medical tent. I really don't remember much and would need to it again as it has been years. Some other guys were on a type of expedition a long time ago and one wrote about how he had to shoot one of the pack animals. It was stung and went completely berserk from the pain.

You should do one on the platypus. I saw an interview with this old guy that was "stung" by one. He said that despite the hospital pumping so much morphine into him, that they feared anymore would risk an over dose, the pain was still unbearable. And the only way that he could get some respite from the pain was for them to knock him out. He was a Vietnam vet that won a Victorian cross. He said he's been shot and hit with grenade fragments, but they were nothing compared to the platypus sting.

In the southeastern of Mexico mostly in the Yucatan peninsula, there is a native tree of that region called "chechen" (Metopium brownei) wich belongs to the Anacardiaceae family. Produces a toxic sage composed of urushiol and is irritant and burns the skin at contact, is also airborne near the tree, it can cause contact dermatitis on the skin. Fortunately this toxic tree has an "antitoxin" tree wich mostly all of the time naturally grows near called "chaca" (Bursera simaruba) wich sage can cure the burnings not only of this tree but also poison ivy irritations. This higly toxic tree was used by the Mayans to fight against the Conquistadors, planting thousands of this ones along their territories borders and chopping off all the antitoxin trees near by.

Planth Health student here, as for your question the Gympie Gympie (D. moroides) is officially a shrub (doesn't develope a robust highly lignified trunk, its slightly less woody) according to the Australian Tropical Rainforest Plants Edition 6 (RFK6).
So no it ain't a tree but since it can grow up to 3 meters tall thats a big ass shrub.
It belongs to the Urticaceae family (so yes its related to common British nettles) which also means it likely propagates like a weed and makes fruits like razberries (Urticas are in Rosid clade).... and u can neutralize the toxin with heat/fire.

This unassuming fish looks like a stone when you look down into the water, but it's covered in these sort of quills. **It is the most venomous fish in the world.**
It stings you when stepped on for daring to think it wasn't a fish, and the excruciating pain isn't the most immense by sting location, but it works its way across the body in a horrifying way. It works its way along your body and assaults your senses. It is so terrible that people are often put into chemically-induced comas to survive the pain, because the human body simply cannot tolerate the sensations and shuts down. That's presuming you can even survive the venom itself, which is considered extremely deadly.

Like I rather have a hole in my arm where my flesh has been cut out then pain for 10 years. And considering how much pain the patient is already in they maybe won't even need to be sedated for the surgery, they won't even feel their arm being cut open due to the already 10/10 pain probably. But if they got stung in a weird area like the butthole then carving away a butthole won't work so then just suicide I guess.

I live in Australia and there is actually a place in Queensland called Gympie. This plane ( which is never heard of btw!) is most found near Gympie. But it’s only found in northern New South Wales and Queensland. That’s why most Australians have never heard of it!

@@OMartinez91 make it one of those heatproof suits scientists wear when walking around volcanoes then, just make sure its puncture/slash proof, then all you need is something to keep you safe from the animals that want to punch and kick you (anti emu/kangaroo spray? is that a thing?)

bread you might be better off building yourself an artificial body that you can control through VR and then locking yourself in you hotel and praying from it to stay safely on the other side of the door. But then you’d still be locked in with the vegemite in the hotels mini-fridge. So, can we really call that safe?
