Back in the 80's I had an electric bass that I pulled out the guts, routed the cavity out more and flew Boston to Liquordale many times with no problems.
I talked to a trucking company when I was coming home from across the country, they gave me a pallet, we stacked up my amp, guitar case, a few other packages, saran wrapped the fuck outta it, and they shipped it in their trucks for me. Wasn't too expensive either. Although the guy I talked to first initially thought I was trying to smuggle coke across the country lmao.
Last time I went to Vegas I got pissed at the TSA and called them apes, that caused me to be strip searched on the day I happened to be going commando. It was hilarious

Joey, dawg, I understand why you're pissed off, but think about it from our side. If we check our guitars, they'll get dented, bent, thrown around, strings broken, etc. Guitars are way more delicate than you may think, so if any important part gets just slightly fucky, it's over. It needs to be taken to a shop or spent an hour or more on to fix. Aside from that, I think you have the wrong idea. We don't bring it on because we think we're gonna play music on the plane (at least 99.9% of the time). Most of us don't think of ourselves as legends either. Instead, we just do it because it's free & ensures our important instrument doesn't get stomped on or tossed on the floor by some yabbo. (Edit;) Thought I should add this; guitars & their equipment are typically expensive, even for the cheap stuff. A basic, cheap Fender is still 300$. Besides, there are plently of guitar players out there that aren't the most well-off financially, so even if checking it DIDN'T result in damage, we'd still need to pay extra. (That last one's a weak point but it's worth saying.)

I've flown many times with guitar, always took the guitar with me and put it on overhead bin. Sometimes they allowed to put it on the space for the first class passengers for jackets etc. But maybe that's changed bit since, or various with different airlines.
