Spectacular cab ride through Vouraikos gorge. Diakopto-Kalavrita rack-railway.

  • Reset to 1080 HD. Second half of the trip down from Kalavrita, starting at Zachlorou or Mega Spilaion, to the outskirts of Diakopto at the bridge carrying the Corinth-Patras motorway. Speed limits are 40 kph for the adhesion sections and 12 for the rack; we were pushing the limits almost the whole way with at times tortured screaming from brakes and wheels. The wonder is that they found/created a route at all through the gorge. The mountains in the distance at the end are on the Northern side of the Corinthian Gulf. As there is a drop in the line of about 2500 ft, you will see a change in foliage from bare trees at the start to full leaf and Spring flowers at the end, and, if you follow the link for the final bit of the trip, oranges on the trees at 1.30.
    The camera struggles at times to cope with the extreme contrasts of light and shade, and having to hand-hold the camera steady for half an hour when standing on a moving train was not easy. My thanks to the crew for inviting me in for this wonderful experience. You can see the last few minutes of the trip through the little town to the station at this link • Cabride into Diakopto ... . You can follow the course of the line on the satellite version of Google maps if you put Diakopto into search.

    Yes the crew were loud, BUT, they did not have to allow anyone in the cab, they did it out of the goodness of their hearts and I for one enjoyed the video even with the banter. Better to hear it than sit watching a silent video other than a bit of tyre screeching once in a while. Very well made.

    a note from a local: Usually it is forbidden for tourists to enter the driver's cabin, BUT many drivers are kind enough to allow it. Plz understand it is their working place and they are free to discuss staff matters, or about the certain matters in their interest. It is NOT part of their duty, to shut their mouth whenever they are kind to allow anyone with a simple fare to enter the driver;s cabin. There are many videos shot by themselves in solitude where they don't speak. This has nothing to do with rudeness or unpolite behavior. Plz next time you comment bear this in mind. Thank you.

    How kind of you to share your adventure with us. I wish my Father had lived long enough to experience the world of You Tube. He did at least make it to Greece before his 83 years ended, his PhD in the Classics gave him the ability to read and speak Classical Greek,although quite different from what is spoken now.

      titup2 Please don't misunderstand me. I greatly enjoy drivers eye view videos and this one was very good. However, when a camera is taking a video along a line, those in the cab 'should' respect that and keep conversation to a minimum and lower the volume. I did NOT intend to insult anybody.

    This is totally awesome. If I might inquire how many men and how long did it take to build this railroad? I took interest in all the retaining walls that hold up this line and all the tunnels and overhanging rock outcroppings. This is so impressive to say the least. Very well done too. Great photography.

    Grat movie! Sure, the crew can talk all they want! I did a lot of cab-rides and never had problems with that. I allways warned the guys that the clip will be posted on TH-cam and to take care of gossiping about the bosses!!! BTW, in the tunnel (4:21) is a branch tunnel to the right that leads to the bridge. Is that an abandoned spur?

      @titup2  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The steep parts of the line operate on the rack and pinion, the rack being the toothed line that you are referring to and the pinion a gear-wheel fixed on the drive axle under the engine; this prevents the train from running free downhill and it drives the train uphill avoiding wheel-slip.

  • @dfddwm
    @dfddwm 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Am I correct that the only parts of the Peloponnese Rail System still operating are this tourist line and the Pirgos-Olympia line? I did travel both ways from Patras - Olympia and Patras-Corinth, plus Corinth-Nafplion in the 1970s. It was great! Plus the Akropolis Express Munich-Athens with bicycles in the guardsvan. Those were the days. Neglecting railways and motorising a country with miles of dual carriage toll roads is a cheap and environmentally crap way of getting quick economic growth. The Greece I see now is unrecognisable.

    • @titup2
      @titup2  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      At one point it was calculated that it would be cheaper to get taxis for all the passengers rather than run trains round the Peloponnese. Nevertheless, they are in the process of rebuilding a twin-track electrified line from Athens to Patras; so far you can get as far as Kiato. Much more has been laid but not yet electrified and at the moment they are relaying the section around Patras which until recently was still running as a sort of commuter line from the outer suburbs at each end. The line from Katakolo to Olympia only runs when cruise ships come in; there is no regular service.

    • @dfddwm
      @dfddwm 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@titup2 Great - thanks for the latest on the situation. I can imagine it will be rebuilt completely at some point with more services. Still the old slow trains were lovely. There seems to be a very strong community of train lovers in Greece who want to see it happen. All the best David.
