Canada: Trains through Black Canyon - British Columbia

  • My last full day in Canada before heading back to Australia via the USA, I visited what happened to become my favorite railfan location in Canada. Black Canyon in British Columbia, just south of Ashcroft.
Standing on the cliff, you can see trains for a significant distance coming from Ashcroft.

I'm absolutely amazing at how long some the trains in Canada are? Goodness 😅 I don't think I've ever seen trains this long in the US?
Absolutely Stunning place 😊❤ What a spectacular 😂 train spot! 😊

This brings back great memories of working for CN as a signal maintainer and gang foreman. I walked every mile of that track and climbed every pole from Kamloops to Vancouver in the mid 80's. Black Canyon has to be one of the hottest places in Canada. We recorded temperatures over 45C beside the tracks on a July day.Beautiful country other than the extreme heat and the rattlesnakes (we were provided snake bite kits). Thank you for the video!

Thanks Phil. I could imagine especially the devastation in the region in 2021. I’m from Australia, even 45c challenges us down here!

This is the north end of the Fraser River - Thompson River Canyon system which cuts about 250 km / 150 miles through the east or dry side of the Coast Mountains on its way to the Pacific Ocean and the Port of Vancouver. There are many other videos on YT of this gorge, the Cisco Bridges are downstream.

Interesting to see on the grain trains how the high-capacity covered hoppers are slowly replacing the cylindrical government-built ones and how GE power now reigns supreme. 25 years ago it would be all cylindricals and EMD SD40 models. I love the solid cut of brand new beaver logo hoppers at the end of the second to last train.

if you look about an inch above the end of the CN trestle you can see a dark wooden structure which was part of the old line. I often see an eagle sitting on the timbers there. I have hundreds of eagle pictures from the Fraser river. Also mountain goats, the odd grizzly and if you are lucky, mountain lions too. Obviously my focus is a little too much on the wildlife. It's fun watching the eagles chase the Osprey after they have caught a salmon.
