Hey Randy..I was a VW dealer tech when that VW was new…That is a keeper and they are becoming collectable. They are very simple to work on. It has Bosch CIS fuel injection. I’m sure it needs a fuel pump….They have two pumps, one in the tank and one under the car. Has a clutch pedal because they have a cable operated clutch…..looks to be in pretty good shape for its age….Still has the factory stickers under the hood so probably never been hit in the front.....As some will say that fuel system can be a challenge if you aren't familiar with them but Id take a CSI car any day having worked on them for may years.....My first VW training class I went to back in the 80s was CIS fuel injection....lol
These were when VW were built to last and DYI able. Not all computers like they are now. Very easy to do your own Maintenance without needing special tools, or computers to read computers
@@jessewynne8193 absolutely! The build quality of these vehicles by Karmann was excellent. I can’t recall any defect on any Karmann built vehicles when I did the delivery inspections when they came off the truck.
A '89 Golf Cabrio Wolfsburg Edition should have an JH engine with K-Jetronic fuel injection. This one seems to be in a great condition, i hope you win it. Collector's item and a little gem.
Research that VW Randy, I found one with 68k miles for sale at $21K, also one with 91K miles at 23K sold in 2023. Their might be a little value to that in restoring it. I know it's 170 K plus miles, but it might hold a value over $10K.
That black reservoir on the bottom of the hood is a vacuum canister for the HVAC system. The wolfsberg is a special edition and might be why it's being bid up. The fuel lines you noticed next to the intake, that's part of the Bosch fuel injection system installed on these cars. The loose shifter is common and just needs some plastic bushings replaced. I've had several of these. They are great cars but they do have quirks and can be hard to find parts for since one of the only suppliers in the US went out of business.
Randy, you should carry a pair of vice grips to help hold up those hoods where the struts are shot. Don't take up any room in your bag of tricks, and weigh nothing. As far as a bumper for the Vette, Monkey Wrench Mike found a biz that provides paint matched bumpers, you could check that out!
Mk1 golf cabriolet is becoming very rare worth good money here in the uk,under the bonnet is a basic i think 1.6 some had 1.8 4 cylinder engine distributor 4 ht leads running to spark plugs & 1 to coil very ,simple set up
definitely on the continent as well! In Germany those used to be typical beginner cars which nobody cared about. The vast majority just turned into pure rust. Now they are rare and quite expensive.
VW golf is a very popular car in Europe. In the 90's I started with the second edition all my friends drove a Golf. And we preferred the GTI edition but the Golf is just a Icon.
Good morning Randy. The 2004 Chevrolet Corvette is a good looking car even though it's got front end damage. The 2007 Lincoln MKX is a good looking SUV even though it's got hail damage.
Fun fact; the camping trim paket "Eurovan" in the US is known as "California" in Europe. Karmann was a car company and a coachbuilder for convertibles. The Chrysler Crossfire was assembled in the Karmann plant as well. As far as I know there was never a diesel VW Golf I convertible model. Looks like a bosch KE jetronic; terrifying system to work on. Monkey Wrench Mike has experience on this topic.
Years ago I bought a 86 cabriolet on the tow at the action for $500. Needed a mechanical fuel injection distributor. It was pretty cool. Other than the weak brakes. Pulled on a 91 cabriolet on the highway.
I bought an 81 Rabbit convertible as my first car in 1987 as a senior in HS. Back then they hadn't changed the name to Cabriolet yet. I wanted a convertible and it was what I could afford without a ton of work. Metallic burgundy with a black top and black interior. I loved that thing! I ended up sliding through an intersection in a fall nighttime storm and t-boned a 74 Chevy sedan of some sort. The engine was pushed up to eye level but was still running and still attached to the transmission. You could still put it in 1st and move despite it being destroyed. If we didn't live up a gravel road in the mountains I'd search for another one just for nostalgia.
The bubble thing on the hood is for the vacuum system. I bet it just needs a fuel pump relay. Our 87 starts the same as that, the relay is under the dash, wiggle it, and starts right up. The points where the hoses go into the block are the injectors.
The thing sticking out of the side of the manifold is a cold start injector. If I remember it's K jetronic.fuel injection. There is a plate in the "throttle body" to the right front of the engine compartment. It raises and lowers with the amount of air being injested. It raises plungers under the throttle body which let more or less fuel go to the injectors. There is an electric fuel pump I forget if it's in the tank or not which feeds an "accumulator" which then goes on to the front and the engine. The timing belt is a snap to replace. Prob has electronic ig with a dist.
Always amazed me how people who don't know how to fix body n paint damages try to convince me ( 43 yrs in body/paint repair) it's a EASY FIX!! IF SO EASY TO FIX, WHY DONT "YOU" FIX IT!??????
That Golf/Rabbit Cabrio... Karmann is a European body builder, and have built various bodies for VW for decades. The black bobble box is a vacuum reservoir. Engine is a 1.8 8v petrol engine with Bosch Jetronic fuel injection. Similar system to the BurnBenz that Monkey Wrench Mike had but two less cylinders😉
These vw cabriolets are very popular and go fast when anybody has one for sale especially these early model vws !! I saw one at pick a part for sale hole run and drive it was going for 1000 and within that hour i was there that vw sold it was white on white !!
That VW cabrio Wolfsburg edition is a classic Randy 👌 Thats the reason for the high price. They are hard to find. I almost bought a Fire and Ice VW Golf 2 in the 90's. Some VW edition are very hard to find and this Wolfsburg is one of them..very rare the technology isnt so hard to fix. A Headcaskets i a well known problem but easy to fix.
Karmann means the company that manufactured the convertibles for Volkswagen back in the days. The headquarter of Volkswagen in Germany is Wolfsburg, a city even founded gor the company, so the 'Wolfsburg Edition' means a pretty loaded model

The Wolfsburg edition is fuel injected and those lines run all the way from the the tank and to the injector pump and to the distribution block then into the intake I know because I've owned one
A lot of those VW Cabriolets were in the student parking lot at my high school. They were all girls cars. Maybe they were Rabbit convertibles at the time.
now they're wanted by guys who grew up eating soy laced chicken nuggets and are essentially women from all the estrogen they've eaten and those guys will pay more than it cost new.
thats a vw golf you call them a rabbit and its a MK 1 HARD TO FIND NOW IN good con great buy and the engine is them is bulletproof 100% great buy and its a karman witch is at the top end speck
I wish I was in a spot to buy that VW cabriolet Those were the built simple times and aside from inside plastics failing like glove box latches and door handles breaking they were simple to get parts and to yourself! If this car didn’t have $1,500 in fees and transport fees aside from whatever the cars selling for. U already spent more then the value and that’s not even fixing the fuel pump on it or changing fluids let alone the couple hundred to DMV for sales taxes and reg! Here in ct they go by the book value in mid condition regardless of miles or what you paid for it. (Kinda!!) its which ever is higher! So if you paid more then it’s book value they tax 6% on every $1 Based on that! It’s crazy If I was closer to that co part I would so buy it And pick it up
In the beginning of the video next to the Corvette there's a white Chevy Silverado with a lift gate can you check it out if not it's cool thank you I just sold my 2005 Ford F-150 with 62k miles that also had a lift gate like that Silverado does
Umn, yea i think that Cabriolet needs to stay in the family... i need that car, its damn clean and original, id die to have one like that, the car needs to live, and are hard to find like that all original... i need that baby in my life...

CIS can be a challenge. There are some reference books on the internet that an help. I have 3 x MK2 VW's Love them all.
@@garybennett2801 they can be but once you know them you can make them run pretty good….And that one is the absolute basic, not even the later CIS-E….

Karmann was the coach builder. By 1989, VW Cabriolets were gasoline engines. The earlier 80's, badged as VW "Rabbit" were diesel engines.
The VW Cabriolet looks nice. Get it running and give it a good detail, it will look sharp. Definitely a cool, fun classic.
A '89 Golf Cabrio Wolfsburg Edition should have an JH engine with K-Jetronic fuel injection. This one seems to be in a great condition, i hope you win it. Collector's item and a little gem.

Hello Randy, Thanks for taking us on You're hunt to find these cars. Have a great day. 😊
Very collectible VW! It looks to be in remarkably good condition! Holly Robinson drove that in 21 Jump Street
Love this mk1 Cabrio , in Europe they are pretty rare and expensive now
Good evening Randy
I’ll like to see the VW running.. please kindly bid for it and lets see it running again… I love VW..🙏🙏🙏
That VW looks awesome, and love it
This is a very valuable car Randy, collectors item, here in England even non running, that car will fetch over £10,000 .

Got to give credit to the guy who did the Krylon paint job on the Cruze. He did the jambs and the dash, sort of a nice touch.
That Cabrio is in good shape. My biggest regret was selling my 99. Looks like their gas engine

That VW was my first car, it felt like a go-cart. My top didn't leak but it sounded like I was on top of an airplane going down the highway.

Golf 1 cars are a ton of money worth in Europe. I believe that white is factory. I believe a Kharman Ghia conversion to a cabrio.
