I love watching Randy tinkering and getting cars running. If the world becomes like Mad Max you’ll want Randy in your group. He can get anything running with some clamps, a 2x4, and his jumper pack.
@@AutoAuctionRebuildsJust saw a Red one in Vermont for sale cheap with the same mileage and decent taillights I believe worse condition than this one u have Great car to put in a Little Turbo diesel and 5 speed or put the body on a old Fox body Stange Great for Power tour 😊
Drove my 1982 EXP across Canada. Vancouver to St John NFLD 4 times. 2 of those times was towing a 8ft box trailer. All the way across canada - most of it in 3rd gear could not quite make it into 4th gear towing the trailer. 2nd gear up the rocky mountains. Stopped for gas 27 times. Homeless, lived in the car for 2 years. Paid $4000 for it. Got a lot of use out of it eventually head gasket went and I junked it because I needed a 4wd for a winter at MUN uni in St. John and had nowhere to store it. The car was very good to me especially at a time where I needed it.
I saw one new at a car show. Some guy was considering buying one as a family car. I was making comments to a friend about it and he walked up to me and asked me what I thought. I said "run, don't walk, to the Toyota dealer and look at a Corolla!"
I can't be the only one thinking this. This has gotta be the car you lose money on, detail, paint, the works. Of all the cars in your yard, this is the one to get stupid on. It has so much personality
I had one of these in 1995 or so, that I got for $200 bucks and we called it the orange frog. It was a real junker too. The windows leaked, the start switch was a toggle switch because someone messed up the ignition key switch badly. It also had the 80HP High Output engine with exhaust headers and a cherry bomb muffler that someone put on it along the years. I gotta say it ran well though even being carbureted and only let me down once when the rear wheel just randomly fell off from the axle spindle failed (I think the previous owner over torqued the axle nut). Oddly it didn't even make any noise till about 10 seconds before it happened. It was alright for a 16 year old kid and that was all I could afford.
1979-1984 mustang steering column will fit, done it a few times. It has to be one with the horn on the turn signal handle. The water pump is driven by the timing belt.
I bought a 1983 Escort in 1989 for $300, because it needed a cylinder head. The early Escorts were notorious for the cylinder heads cracking, because the fan relays wouldn't turn the electric fan on, and the regular Escorts had no indication that they were getting hot, not even a warning light. In the 1980's and 1990's, rebuilt cylinder heads for Escorts was a pretty lucrative business. Good thing your EXP has a gauge that works. If memory serves, the fan relay is somewhere behind the glove box.
My very first car was a 1983 ford exp. Same body style as that one. Which was my best friends car. He came into some money on his 18th bday from his fater passing when he was 2. So at the age of 18 he became a millionair. Literally sold my parnets his exp for me to have as a first car. It was a white egg shell color and a 5 speed stick shift. Well about 2 to 3 months later a 18 wheeler log truck pulled out in front of him. He switched lanes which at same time the 18 wheeler did too. So he snatched the steering wheel back to the left and hit the back of the 18 wheeler and it flipped his truck and threw him out of it and into a chain link fence. My best friend died very shortly after that. I for the longest couldnt understand why god wanted to take his life right when he got everything hes been waiting for, for his whole life. And still dont know why today either.... But i so loved that car. It was my first car and yes it was only a 2 seater car. But give a kid a car and a beach with lots of friends and they will probably end up like me. 13 kids packed in a 2 seater hatch back car. People dont believe it. Lol. People were laying on top of people on top of pèople, and the rear hatch was left open and even had people hanging out the back. I got stopped by police and given a citation for over populated vehicle. Man those were the good days. Lol. I miss you still brother to this day and wonder how much different lift wouldve been if you wouldnt have passed at such an early age. In memory of Eric wayne long...... rest in piece brother. Rest in piece.
Really enjoyed this one. Its sad to think about how many older cars got parked for minor issues, but because they were "just an old beater", they sat neglected and minor issues became major issues and then the cars ended up getting scrapped. This little car really does seem like it wants to live, and has a lot left to give.
My cousin had an '82 EXP. He never once changed the oil and it ran on 3 cylinders the whole time he owned it as well. The #4 cylinder had a stuck exhaust valve. The alignment was so bad that it shook terribly over 40 mph. He drove it in that condition for eight years. Including trips from North Dakota to Kentucky and out to Las Vegas. It just wouldn't die no matter how much it was neglected.
Some friends and I had the EXP turbo sometime in the 90s. We lightened it (gutted the interior), turned the boost up, and a few other tweaks and used it for bashing cones and occasionally terrorizing other people at Willow Springs. The good news is, the 1.6 is a non interference engine, so you needn't worry about destroying it when the 42 yr old timing belt breaks.
My dad bought me a 1982 in 1983 my junior year in high school. Loved that little EXP it was great on fuel mileage.Let me tell you it was a great car for dates those front seats laid all with way back if you know what I mean😉. I bought a 1982 a few years ago to restore. I’ll tell you this getting parts for it is very hard.a lot of mechanical parts you go lookup the escort. A lot of parts off the escort fit the EXP. And they had a big 70 horsepower lol
I had two of these and 82 with the HO engine, Michelin TRX package and Stainless tuned exhaust, it had factory a header! The second was an 85 that I modified quite a bit. I really like these way under powered but IMO they handled great. I used to have a set of tail lights but I am not sure what happened to them. When I get a chance I'll check my storage unit. I have been trying to find an EXP that is basically rust free for a while now. If this is an early one you should have to replaced the timing belt before you start it! They were zero clearance if the timing belt goes on an early one say good bye to the valves! Check the VIN later ones has eyebrows in the tops of the pistons for clearance. Also replace the water pump it runs off the timing belt and the top cause of the timing belt going. These 1.6/1.9 engines were great. Of course this was basically a sporty version of the Escort.
These 1.6 escort engines had a problem with the rings which would cause them to have blow by and eventually start blowing oil and smoking. When we were in the car business we use to buy 5 or 6 of these at a time from the auction with this issue. just pop the head off and remove the oil pan, pop the pistons out and put rings and bearings in them and they were great cars. I have probably done a hundred of these. I got to where I could completely re-ring one of these in a day. We use to buy these for 200 bucks with 50-60k miles on them and then resell them
Our shop did the same thing, buy them cheap and fix the common issues. They also had an issue with the carb base screws coming loose from the bowl and the fuel pump rods wearing down. Did a whole bunch of them. Head gaskets were a easy fix, unhook the fuel supply, slip off the timing belt, drop the exhaust pipe, pull the head bolts and lift. Took about 45 minutes.
An Estate car? I betcha when somebody tried to get it started by smashing the column, they added gas to it. A friend of mine had an EXP back about '90. My friend's was red and black with a black gut. Not fast by any means but it proved reliable for him.
OMG ! Talk about a memory. It was the late 90s. I had an 82 white exp with a four speed manual. Loved that little car back then. So much that I bought the "next gen". The Escort EXP. The 82 looked like yours of coarse but the next gen had more of a Ford escort nose and the hatch had a more bubbled hatch glass. The hatches are interchangable so you know. In case you find one it looked much better on the exp. Also the escort GT wheels looked nice and improved its stance. She wasn't as "fast" as the escort. Escorts had a slightly larger 4cyl but Wow I still to this day miss my oddball little car. I truly hope you bring yours back to life and keep her on the road ... Even with that auto trans....ugh lol
I had an 82 with a four speed manual that I bought for $300 with 128k, put 3k a month on it for 5 months and sold it for $400 with a nicer stereo system that I had installed. The car served me very well, just did basic maintenance and even took a long trip with no issues. Just had to keep an eye on the oil because it did burn a little which was very typical of these.
Had one many years ago. My EXP was a 4 speed and had a rear spoiler, a little more sporty looking. There was one on Bring A Trailer in 2022 that sold for $6600.
The pump with the tiny belt is just the smog pump. I have the same cruise control on my 1983 Escort and when it was working it worked just fine at 25 mph.
I had an 82 as my first car in 1998. $500 I knew it was very rare even at that time but you'd still see them for sale cheap from time to time. I stupidly sold mine a couple years later for $200 more than I bought it thinking I'd pick one up in a few years when I was older and had more $ and a spot to store it. Needless to say they all disappeared after that and that dream went up in smoke.
My sister had the orange LX version back in the early 1980's, it had a stick and she loved the car. For the most part it was very reliable as cars from those days go. She eventually ended up with my STE after I purchased another automobile. A reminder of days long since gone.
Auto Auction Rebuilds Randy, those cans of Coleman Fuel are NOT KEROSENE. They are WHITE GAS for use in lanterns and camping stoves. It is a very high quality extra refined gasoline and it has a VERY LONG shelf life and it is still good even after 20+ YEARS. A car can run on it but I would suggest selling it since it currently costs from $18 to OVER $30 PER GALLON depending on where you buy it. Definitely worth selling since they could help pay for the parts the car needs.
Check the pads and slide pins if they are seized that will cause the brake pedal to go all the way to the floor. Also check the rear drum brakes you may need to adjust them more outwards to make contact with the drums
Thank you Randy! Slick litte EXP! I had a 1981 Ford Escort SS as my first car. DON'T FORGET to replace the timing belt because of age! Interval is 60,000 mikes but don't wait! NOT an interference engine until 19851/2 Thank you again!
I had the sister car to this Ford the Mercury LN7. Had it for just over a year until electrical problems and computer issues. Man on TH-cam has been working on these cars for year. His channel is 1982 EXPert. He maybe able to link you to parts for this model. Great video. Thanks.
Been waiting for this video forever!!! Second car I ever owned in high school was this exact color except mine was a manual and had the red cloth interior. Loved that car!!! I traded it in for a 92 Mitsubishi Eclipse and got $1000 for it!!!!
Had 2 of these back in the day.A base 1982 and a GT fuel injected 1983.Both bought when they were 2 years old.The 83 had the premium sound with the Amp button under dash like this one.Fun cars.Great on gas.Not many left.
I always thought the Ford EXP was a strange looking car with odd proportions. But one of my co-workers had one in the 1990's, and she absolutely loved it.
I'm sorry, but I love this car it brings back so many good memories from that era & just so you know, this car is built off the the Ford Escort platform & shares parts & especially the taillights. 💯
This is an exciting series to watch. Noticing a common theme amongst many of your old model vehicle purchases & that is the cooling fan issues. Hard to believe 20 year old gas would still work. Could be a chance that it has a mix of real old & fairly new gas before you got it since it is possibly 3/4 full.
This EXP is a gem 🤩 It sounds very smooth but maybe sticking rings because of sitting for a time? CVH engine is a good unit but it can be noisy with worn cam and lifters when it get high miles on it if it hasn't been maintained in time but i have a feeling this engine has been maintained good. A interference engine so timing belt change is essential. Awesome video Randy 😃👍
I am a huge fan of the EXP and the LN7 from Mercury. Sad to see it in this condition...and to think it sat not too far from where I live! Fun video. I can't wait to see more vids on this car!
Loving these old cars and especially this EXP. Last time I seen one has got to be a pretty long while now. Pretty sad there isn't many of these out there anymore. Impressive it ran so well knowing how long it sat! Loving the videos!👍
I had a 1985 Exp. It was really a fun Lil car. Had ac, auto, sunroof and everything. That coleman fuel (white gas) never goes bad. Those 4 gal are $60-$65 today.
always sweet to find an oldschool car like that with very low miles! i'm sure youve already researched all of this (or knew it), but thats basically a "sporty" ford escort, same engine i believe. i had a really cool COPPER colored Mercury LN7 (sister car). great memories!
Around 1996 or 97... My Dad bought a Ford EXP for my brother. I thought my dad was pulling into the driveway with a Mustang then looked closer... Two door with the hatchback... You could have the driver and 3 passengers but he had NO back seats. Just a flat piece to lay on with a metal bar going across to(im guessing) hold groceries from falling forward. I got to drive that car when my brother was not using it. It was fun in the snow and was always good to drive to town and back. I think my brother used it for a trade in... but I dont remember.
Keep it up randy, we still like the weird cars even if you dragged it on! Keep it up randy we love it!!! You always work randy, you got that damn thing running
Right side tail light lens available on eBay. The PCV valve is most likely stuck closed and or the EGR isn't opening & closing? I would check the relay for the cooling fan, it might be broken? Clock works! Tap the oil pressure gauge, the needle will probably move up some more. Oil pressure sensor/transmitter is most likely inop, or it's leaking oil past the threads?
Successful game of "Time to do some sketchy stuff.....sure hope I get away with it". Next time, pull the fuse on the fuel pump. Haha. Pretty cool the EXP is almost road worthy. Brakes, some adjustments (shift linkage) and putting the steering column back together. Ok with some good cleaning and you got a $600 car. LOL
the seat track breaking was a huge problem with 80's ford products. Their supplier at the time was using subpar materials. There was actually a recall on them
In the late 80s my neighbor bought a used EXP. I thought it was so cool. I was just getting into cars being 12 - 13 years old. It was gold in color with a red pin stripe and he had mag rims on it. He drove it til he was killed in it when it was t-boned in the drivers door. But it seems the rear hatch was different than what you have, maybe more of a fastback? But I had always heard the EXPs were Escorts that had been redesigned.
Man Randy you can get any car to run. Definitely love watching you tinker with stuff. Seeing how you dive in can give confidence to anyone to do it too.❤
I had an EXP in the late 80s and early 90s (standard transmission) and I drove that thing into the ground. It was a piece of crap but it got me where I needed to go.
The seat backs can be fixed for less than $5. There's a wire that goes to a Solenoid on the back side of carb. That tends to break inside of the plug at carb. Also the module on distributor likes to go bad when it dose it will run ok when cold but when hot starts missing. If I remember correctly the bolt that holds it on is a 5.5 km socket.
That huge engine came from the Escort GT. I wanted one but got a new Mazda truck instead. (That proves why I grew up a Ford guy. Your car is a miracle.)
Randy your a marvel! If your looking for nostalgia in 80s vehicles, there's plenty in your home state as well as adjoining states. Those shipping rates will bury you every time.
How appropriate - when you turned on the radio, "Slow Hand" by the Pointer Sisters was playing which would have been a hit when this car was brand spanking new. Kinda gave me Christine vibes how the radio always played the oldies 😀
Found tail lights on ebay, lock cylinder on Rockauto plus lots of others. Randy I owned an 85 Black 5 speed. If I recall parts from an Escort should work for the engine, transmission, wheels This car brought a lot of memories, I could not spend what you have in it, I know you won't keep it but I hope whoever buys her keeps her up.
Been watching you since you were changing plugs in your Optima. Have to say this is one of the best cars i seen you get. havent seen one of these in years! very interested in seeing you get this road worthy.
What made me laugh, when he turned on the radio, the first song was from the 80's, like a time capsule, it was just waiting to finish that song. I also had a Mercury Lynx and loved that little car! Always wanted a EXP or LN7.
They are fun little cars being 2 seater and sun roof ,the one I had was a standard, and it was a quick little dude with its 90 hp ,LOL. But still a fun little car ,especially for a 16 year olds second car,my main driver back then was a old 67 GMC camper special, with a 4 speed, and an H.O. 283 single barrel and wooden plank fleet side bed with tie down loops on the bed sides ,being a 3/4 ton camper special.
You can buy re keying kits and set up the ignition and the doors to use the same key . Just get a new ignition and then re key the doors and hatch to that and you are good to go .

Brake fluid in the car brake system is full of moisture, ie water, and most likely some air bubbles, that's why the brakes are intermittent.
Worth saving with that low of mileage. I like it.

Thanks.
I haven’t seen one of these in a million years, but I remember when they were new.
That Coleman lantern fuel is essentially ultra-pure 93 octane lead-free gasoline. Definitely NOT Kerosene.
When he realized the drivers seat wasn’t bolted down either. 😂 Classic.
Believe it or not Randy there are a couple taillights for the EXP on Ebay.
Looks like there are a lot of the Mercury LN7 taillamps
The Merc parts are blacked out vs the red lenses on the FORD.
@@TheOcculus 84 and 85 used the blacked out ones too
Randy, I love it when you fix up the old cars. Personally bored with Copart walk arounds, everybody does them now! 😊😊😊😊😊😊
I always thought the Ford EXP was a strange looking car with odd proportions. But one of my co-workers had one in the 1990's, and she absolutely loved it.
I think there is someone on TH-cam who has a channel dedicated to EXPs.
Yes, channel is called 1982EXPert. I just stumbled upon it a week ago lol
Pretty kewl car kinda reminds you of the older hatchback mustangs I like it myself gotta keep it Randy 🎉🎉🎉😮 a gem of history to hold imo
Dude, I freaking love that car! Super different and unique. Plus, it's the same age as me! Too cool! ✌️from Ohio
Love the Ford EXP. I remember they also made a hatch back model.
They’re all the same. All hatchbacks.
This is a great video Randy. I like seeing these old cars get a new chance to live.
very cool! this ZX2 for sure will not drop a valve seat because this is when ford made some real quality
The Coleman fuel is called whitegas. We used it to get pass the emissions stations when the factory smog equipment got crappy.
Newly subscribed! Love these old car revival videos. My ex brother in law had an EXP. I remember riding in the back with no seat LOL
Did you ever do a video on that black Grand Prix? I love those first gen W-body Grand Prixes.
Man Randy you can get any car to run. Definitely love watching you tinker with stuff. Seeing how you dive in can give confidence to anyone to do it too.❤
Your enthusiasm when it started is awesome, it's what keeps me watching. This cars styling is um...not good but hey it's still a fun car.
I had an EXP in the late 80s and early 90s (standard transmission) and I drove that thing into the ground. It was a piece of crap but it got me where I needed to go.
I love seeing these type of cars in the channel. I hope this is what he does for ever
The seat backs can be fixed for less than $5. There's a wire that goes to a Solenoid on the back side of carb. That tends to break inside of the plug at carb. Also the module on distributor likes to go bad when it dose it will run ok when cold but when hot starts missing. If I remember correctly the bolt that holds it on is a 5.5 km socket.
i am addicted to this channel. Along with Hoovie, The Wizard and Legit Street Cars and Rich Rebuilds and Samcrac
BRO MY DAD HAS THAT CAR AND HE IS SELLING PARTS i can try and email u his number
Randy's email is mentioned at the 1:15 minute mark. TH-cam keeps deleting it when I replied to you!
I think those exp are neat
That huge engine came from the Escort GT. I wanted one but got a new Mazda truck instead. (That proves why I grew up a Ford guy. Your car is a miracle.)
Randy your a marvel! If your looking for nostalgia in 80s vehicles, there's plenty in your home state as well as adjoining states. Those shipping rates will bury you every time.
I can’t wait to see more content on this!! I love the little thing!
That was one of my favorite videos that car was awesome I'm 36 and I've never seen one before
I had a 82 Escort back in the day. I remember, it always started, and got me there and back. It was crude, but effective.
How appropriate - when you turned on the radio, "Slow Hand" by the Pointer Sisters was playing which would have been a hit when this car was brand spanking new. Kinda gave me Christine vibes how the radio always played the oldies 😀
Randy your a beast getting that thing running like it is,sounds great there is hope for the exp. Great video.
Had the 1988 had the multi port 1.9 engine. I beleave they had a turbo model as well. Blast from the past Randy 🚘👍🫡
I used to have one of those lol 5 speed and red was mine fun to pop around town hi speed 50 lol.. love ur 80s series txs good day
What made me laugh, when he turned on the radio, the first song was from the 80's, like a time capsule, it was just waiting to finish that song. I also had a Mercury Lynx and loved that little car! Always wanted a EXP or LN7.
no it was peter frampton from like 76
My dad had an 82 exp he had bought at auction wrecked. He rebuilt it and looked like new . Only problem is that those engines were prone to fire 🔥.
I did forget about these cars existing!! I remember the later year EXPs having crazy plastic ground effects and looking sharp!!
I love seeing classics come back to life.
Put another $5,000 into it and you'll have a great $400 car.
I never saw the frog eyes EXP ... but I did see the Gen 2 in the flesh when new. It was a good looking little car ... even if Escort roots were clear.
Thank you for this video! This car is a survivor. Please save it! 👍
Great vid Randy. Thanks for bringing her back to life, great job!
Replace the master cylinder for the brakes, replace the ignition switch, and steering column, put a headinit and speakers, tail lights, paint it
You can buy re keying kits and set up the ignition and the doors to use the same key . Just get a new ignition and then re key the doors and hatch to that and you are good to go .
I think you have to push the gear lever down when shifting out of park. Very rare car.
