- We are a local lawn and landscaping company based out of Freeburg IL. Family owned/operated and started from the ground up. For marking curved lines use 1/2" PVC pipe or multiple of need be. Once you have the first line marked you can use your 2x4 spacer to mimic the line on the opposite side and flex your 1/2 inch pipe to suit.
As for full cutting in place, inside turns are easy and you shouldn't have a problem, cutting outside curves are where you run the risk of over cutting other pavers.
Rather than picking the blocks up and taking them to a table saw, you just pull the brick out and cut it with your gas axe right next to where you are working. It takes alot of time walking back and forth to a saw.
As Henry Ford said "Walking is expensive " Also I would attach a short piece of 1x4 at one end of the 2x4 to make a stop , becomes a one man operation and time saver . The PVC pipe makes beautiful curves
Beautiful job the stairs looks awesome! I gotta reset my pavers in the front. I live in NJ closer to PA. The contractors years ago install our pavers different. I watch them use only the smaller rocks for the base. I think smaller than yours they packed with a machine. Maybe this is why it sank, washed out & rotated. I'm going to do it ourselves. I got 4 estimates from$975 to $1500. I asked them how will they install? Only 1 base compact & sand base for final application between the pavers.

Excellent. You answered a huge question for me that I couldn’t find anywhere else. I was planning on using a demo saw to cut my curves all the way through but you just talked me out of it. Instead I’ll score the pavers with my angle grinder then remove and finish cutting one by one.
Why would you score it with another saw first? Why not just draw your lines and then go cut them once?
Sarah Custer I didn’t end up scoring them first. I just drew my lines with a crayon then cut with demo saw. Easy peasy.

My crush and run isn't perfectly level and flat, which I didn't think would be too much of an issue, but getting the sand in and laying the bricks all level has been a challenge.. Doing a 71' curving walkway...
Sarah Custer it’s super important to get the base as perfect as possible. Mine wasn’t perfect either but it still ended up good. If you’re cutting them in place with a demo saw be prepared to do like 6-10 feet at a time and take a breather. Make sure u have a good respirator because if you’re cutting it dry it will create a ton of nasty silica dust. I’d cut then blow it with the leaf blower to keep the area as dust free as possible. I was worried my neighbors were gonna get mad because the dust gets bad. Cover anything nearby you don’t want dust on it.

What’s the name of the tool you used to level your bedding on the rails. Would you also know how many inches of 3/4 clear you need to get 8 inches of compaction ? Thanks again
Can you do a video on how to do concrete for paver restraint? I’m in Des Moines, IA... wondering how it would work for freeze/thaw cycles
Ankeny Lawn never do a concrete restraint. You’re doing yourself no good. People choose pavers over concrete a lot of times to prevent from cracking so you’re defeating the purpose by adding concrete as an edge restraint. Especially in a freeze thaw environment. Use a regular plastic edging with metal spikes. When the spikes rust in the ground it will be good.

@@neverrestboxinggym you can’t use the typical plastic snap edge and spikes on this type of base. Only on a dense grade base. This is a open graded base. The open grade has nothing to hold the spikes in.
I guess everyone does things wayyyyyyy different the base I would have used 3/4 clean with sand and still used paver edging due to expansion of hot and cold seasons, but awesome work bud
Who uses clean stone with sand? Sounds like you need to go back to school. It’s A-gravel and concrete sand for non permeable or 3/4 clean and HPB for your screws layer

Great video! I have a question, can I do this on the side of my house? And when it rains, would the pavement be waterproof? I wouldn’t want to have water going down my old house’s basement
Only the experienced workers would know how to cut those curves without cutting one by one. Those curves are pretty easy. They are big. Some are tight and all you can do is score then you have to cut it 1x1. Im talking a 3 ft radius or sometimes even smaller. But not bad. How long did it take to do this? After filling cutting out and filling with base rock
1/2” PVC pipe for curves ! Lay pavers every 2-3’ stacked 3 high on very edge of pipe and you can make perfect curves. I should make a video of it !

Just use edge restraint to mark the curves
With under lapping that top tread how much did that change the tread depth. From the video it looked noticably shallower. Usually code requires no more than 3/8" difference between deepest and shallowest treads on stores and stairs. Not sure in your area. If it is, wouldn't that be a tripping out falling hazard? I have s small shed in my back yard that someone else built 2 steps for years ago and the bottom step is about a half the depth as the top and it's very awkward. Can't tell you how many times I've missed that button step going down. But missing a top step can be bone breaking. JS. Good luck and God bless.

Too bad about the stairs, they look very nice at a glance, untill you see (14:50) or (16:12) the first riser at ground level is way too short and the riser too the porch too high.Would not pass code, dangerous. Otherwise, the pathway turned out ok.

It looked like you put some polymeric sand down then you said it rain. Did you have to remove it before the rain? How long did you have to wait for the pavers to dry?

Great work! Inspired me to do my own patio...you guys made it look easy and I am still healing. I do have a question if I may...my wife now wants a curved walk way to the shed. Problem is the pavers are in 3 sizes - how do I calculate the amount of individual pavers?
Unless the size difference in the pavers are drastic like 4 inch to 18 inch, the curves won't make a difference. Just get the percentages of each size that your layout needs. Layout as normal with only approximations for the edges. Get a couple long pieces of PVC conduit and shape the conduit to the curve you want. Mark with a pencil then cut. With practice, you can skip pieces that would be smaller than half their original size after cutting and fill those spaces with what was cut off previously. In other words, don't waste a full piece for a space that can be filled with scrap from another cut. Also, if you try the 2x4 method showed in this video, you'll have a bad time.
Have you had any issues using the 1” clean as base since there are no fines binding it together.

Water doesn't only penetrate from up top, it also flows through the sides.
It also moves up when it has no where else to go.
Of course the sand will retain moisture over the winter 🙄

When mating up to another surface and trying to match the height. How much do the pavers compact into the 3/8” minus? I’d like to make the switch over.
It doesn’t need to compact, that’s the point, just pour and level

We just use regular landscape fabric to keep the rock/soil separated. We use 3/4 clean rock then 3/8 chips bedding layer 👍🏼

So ur leaving that depending on the pipes. But u got the pipes on ur base. So how do u know ur base is dead level or running correctly because them pipes Surely do bend
So when you compact the base do you go for bubble level and just set the pipes on it or whatever it is and just pull the screed
You wanna set the pipes at a height where the pavers will fit in place for the final product, you should definitely use a level to see if there’s any bowing in the pipe (make sure it’s straight) and then you screed and while your laying down the pavers you fill in the gaps where the pipes were

The grass on the outside edge will grow up to those pavers? I'm just curious since there is the cement there.
Yea it can grow but it’ll have a hard time, I personally don’t like using cement for the retaining wall, yes the bags of mortar are cheaper, but the spikes and plastic retainers go in faster and are more discrete.
How do you change on a paver project ?
3/8 crusher run is what I use it gets hard as concrete

Weed barrier, and also to keep base and subsoil from mixing resulting in settling.

We use 1” OD gas pipe for our screed rails, to screed we use an aluminum screed bar from Menards
Why the short step at the bottom using rectangular caps and you were using bullnose? Seems like a trip hazard. Seems like it would have been better to ramp up the pavers for a smooth transition if that was needed to achieve the proper grade

Yeah, they conveniently left doing the stairs out of the video which is the most important part... hahaha
After you apply the poly sand, do you have to compact it again?
Yea you wanna make sure all of the poly sand is in the gaps and you can either be a very maticulius sweeper or pound the sand in them leaf blow the excess, the last thing you wanna do is wet the poly sand while it’s all over the pavers because they’ll become discolored from the sand

Where's the sand?
What are the advantages using concrete restraints compared to plastic snap-edge with 12” spikes? I’d like to switch over but nervous with MN frost.
My thought is the concrete will crack into smaller pieces and eventually move and it will cause a lot of problems. The plastic with the spikes isnt going anywhere! Id like to see this walkway in a year or two.
No restraint, we will be watching the tear out in three years.

Nice fellas. Not a fan of the multiple pavers on ea step tho. 1 solid piece f blue stone or something would be much better and safer. That may of been customer call tho. U are a hard worker. Pavers look nice but after few years are a bitch. 17 01 mark shows my point the steps look awful man

we never do curves that way... we do pvc pipes an MARK IT then mark the other side
and we use metal conduit for the rails never pvc & hook up saw to water hose and rinse it well befor it drys an it wont stain it azstoneveneer.com

Are these pavers getting laid on modified?!......... the manufacturers of these paver companies (techno block unilock Belgard ect) all recommend (and teach you when going through their courses - like the pvi) to strictly use sand!....
Sand is a thing of the past in hardscaping around here! Sand is very problematic and moves like crazy!
