I love your emphasis on internalising the profundity of the thoughts expressed by the poems. They seem to grow in us over time. Or perhaps we grow in response to them.
One that really changed my whole life was a passage from Plato's Republic, Book 9, *(571d5)*
I memorised the poetic translation of it by Walter Pater from the chapter The Genius of Plato in his book 'Plato and Platonism'. I think it's a great starting place for understanding Plato's philosophy.

It's interesting you including Psalm 139. I love the Psalms, in particular Psalm 83. You can research them and get so much more understanding. I found when in a lecture about poetry, the poems always meant something different to me than the "authoritive" meaning of the poem. Tennyson lived in my home town, so his work was taught at an early age. It's a fascinating subject. We had a poet living in our locality who lived on the shore. He spoke about his poem in connection with his ever changing garden. I looked out of his window and it was the sea - no garden. as the tide went out, it revealed the craggy rocks, seaweeds, birds and many others things quite often missed by the mind that takes it all for granted. He got my attention. I returned and made a short film and then found I couldn't post it as it had commercial music on it.

Just discovered your channel through Pam Barnhill’s podcast. My family is taking our very first steps (pun intended) in poetry memorization with “The Road Not Taken.”

Welcome! I'm glad you're here. Pam is so fabulous! I've learned so much from her over the years. I love the pun and the poetry choice. 😉 My 11 year old daughter actually recently started a poetry podcast you and your kids may enjoy, too. It's called Peter Piper Picked a Peck of Pickled Poems. 😍www.humilityanddoxology.com/pickledpoemspodcast/

I love reciting Jabberwocky...the lines run through my head randomly at times... haha! For little kids "Trees" by Joyce Kilmer.

oh, "Trees" is a good one! Here in my home state of NC there's actually an incredible national forest called Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest. We hiked it as a family back in 2020 and there was one tree that all 7 of us couldn't quite get our arms around while linking hands! Here's a description from the website: "This forest is one of the Nation’s most impressive remnants of old-growth forest. The forest contains magnificent examples of more than 100 tree species, many over 400-years-old, and some more than 20 feet in circumference and 100 feet tall. This 3,800-acre forest was set aside in 1936 as a memorial to the author of the poem “Trees,” Joyce Kilmer, who was killed in action in France during World War I. This forest, part of the Joyce Kilmer-Slick Rock Wilderness, is maintained in its primitive state. The only way to see this forest is on foot. " If anyone is ever in the far west of NC it is definitely worth a visit!
