The coolest thing in this musical is that we can interpret what’s happening merely through the instrumentals, based on motifs of certain scenes (like “danger is nearby”motif, “storm” motif, etc.), motifs of certain characters (like Odysseus motif, Athena motif, Penelope motif, Telemachus motif, Circe motif, etc.), certain instruments (guitars, piano, viola, etc.), and certain musical elements (like the use of electrical music elements, etc.). Thank you, Mr. Jalapeño, for presenting the world with such a masterpiece.
You know it's effective when the fandom immediately recognizes Penelope's motif when Odysseus yells "I can't!" when Circe tempts him. Such a nice touch!
@@JayHerrans Honestly, Mr. Gorgy- may I call you Jorgy? Your consistency with motifs and rhythms is some of the best I've ever listened to, and it really does make it all come together in such beautiful ways. If I had any artistic talent whatsoever, I assure you I would be paying you in the topmost quality fanarts to give thanks
Yes ! I espacially like the "full speed ahead" motif (I named it like that idk) like in Remember them we can almost hear the "we're up we're off and away we go" wich in this situation... yes please go faaar away from here XD
I also love how the motive also correlates to the mood. Like, in Puppeteer, Circe is very calm. She knows what happening and she is in control. The drums reflect a calm heartbeat and the strings an assured mind. In Done For, it all speeds up. The heartbeat like drum goes faster, like some filled with adrenaline and the strings are sped up like someone having to fight and find a quick solution.Circe has to fight and is loosing control and ground. And in There Are Other Ways, she slowly calms down but seems more invigorated and positive. The drums find their tempo again and the strings have still a bit more pep to them. She as a person stays the same, just like her motiv stays the same and still there is a subtle difference.
I have ADHD and my mind is constantly going on about something but finding Epic the Musical was a life changer!! All the instruments playing in the background of each song and each character having different sounds to tell you a story is absolutely breathtaking!
The strings really fit Circe so well!! Literally, EPIC is my new favorite musical!! So excited to see more songs soon!! :DD 🎶✨ Side note: I’m a music student and I can say that learning even just the basics in music theory (such as taking notes of the scales, chords and their respective functions), it will make writing and noting the music so much easier! Thanks for showing the backgrounds of how the songs are made, this was really cool ^^
My daughter played the Circe Saga for her friends on the way to their spring break camp and to the surprise of no one, they're now obsessed. I'll be sure to send this to them, too, since many of them are in band/orchestra and will appreciate the extra insight! Thanks, Jay!
When I heard you first play the motif, I was like "wait, isn't that in There Are Other Ways"? You, sir, are a genius. Thank you for putting so much effort into this musical
I love how throughout all of Epic, it's not hard to picture whats going on thanks to all these motifs, each character has their theme n instruments, situational themes appear every now and then, the way some characters motifs play even when they aren't around. I like that the troy saga cements in the themes for ody and the crew, and from there on each saga introduces new motifs for new big characters. Ofc for each saga the motifs for the cyclops, poseidon and circe and everpresent, but so are the motifs for ody and the crew, musically showing how they're facing off these "big bads" on their journey home (and subsequently, ody's journey to ruthlessness) Mr Jorgy gorgy you've done phenomenally well and thank you for all you've created!!
I love leitmotif so much. Even discounting the fascinating ways it affects the actual sound and structure of music, even just conceptually I adore it; it makes the soundtrack itself become an active character in the media it’s backing. How is that not the coolest and prettiest concept ever?
I love how the strings are faster in done for to give an air of suspense since it's a battle scene. and also the kick drum is such a satisfying beat, i would listen to that alone and be happy lol
I appreciate these videos so much! Thank you for pointing out the details of your music and explaining them to us. It makes it so much fun to go back and listen to the songs again, paying attention to the details I might not have noticed otherwise. Hope you have an amazing day! :D
There are few things more satisfying then when I recognize a motif in a song where I didn’t expect it, like in “There Are Other Ways” when Odysseus goes “I CAN’T!” and then Penelope’s motif starts playing.
Woah!! That's cool af man!!!! Thank you so much for making these videos that explore how these musical instruments and themes associate with a character to make their songs more distinct and coherent. Wow. I still cannot fully process the genius of Mr Jalapeño
I had a dream last night where, on top of Epic, Jay just released an entire mini musical about Medea and the Golden Fleece, and I'm just saying I'M ONTO YOU MR JALAPEÑO! (But as always, great work, sir. This saga is fantasic!)
I love these videos where he walks us through his process. I want to write music, so any tips he gives are gold; this is incredible composition. I love this musical
What I love about musicals is these "motifs", and I'm very happy to see your videos explaining them in your work. It's a mind-blowing moment when I find out about them.
I’m trying to get more into music and song writing and honestly jay has helped so much! thank you! plus epic may or may not have inspired a book I’m planning to write :))))
It's so much fun when you point these little things out to us. It also makes me happy to know Circe has a constant throughout the entire saga that is subtle and as you said, it is simple yet effective. Otherwise, it would be a bit too daunting how quickly she changes her mindset to face issues. The kick drum gives a simple step-by-step dance for us, Jay, and the character herself to stay steady. It is a building block to strategy and approach.
Even for those of us who have some music theory, mine being Band, this still helps us write music. The way you describe it without the terms helps it feel a little less overwhelming but also a little less like work. You make it more fun to write music. Thank you, Mr. Jalapeño.
As someone not versed in the world music knowledge, I adore when you post videos like this explaining the elements. Makes it so much more fun to listen to the saga. Thank you! Can't wait to hear the next act!
I really enjoy listening to your music and I might have made my friend addicted too😂 And I really appreciate the effort thats in it. And all of these little details are real perfection.
As someone that doesnt have the avility to hear music in an analytical way (my musician friend tested me a few times and tells me I don't have very discerning hearing when it comes to notes and tones), I reallt appreciate these breakdowns. They help me appreciate all the complexities and thought thay goes into writing this music that I wouldn't likely hear on my own.
I've been a singer for nine years now and I'm decising to jump into the magic of composition because I sooo want to put some of my ideas and thoughts out into the world. You are now one of my inspirations: that you can craft such genius poetry and deep meaning gives me hope to what I can accomplish. I can only hope that you see this and maybe share a little more on your background and where I can learn to master the tools you have. I already see you use Ableton Live. I had planned on using FL Studio or Studio One but you may change my mind.
I love seeing these BTS videos! The music you and the rest are making is just fantastic and you deserve all the love and support that we as a community can give.
This is so cool! I love that you share different aspects and motifs that you use in your music to all of us! It’s really helpful and it encourages me a lot to know that you’re here to help us and not just to share your music! I’ve been wanting to write my own musical but have had no idea how to start nor know anything about music whatsoever so your short videos on these topics really help! Thank you Jay!💛
This was such a helpful video, Jay. I feel like it can be applied to so many different crafts, too! I like to draw and write, but I’m self-taught and don’t have a strong background in art or writing. Just like with music, it’s important to study and learn these things, but the simple tools are effective too and it’s important to have fun with it. Thanks for this reminder!
Thank you so much for videos like this, about your proccess of creating the musical and stuff! ^^ I'm also doing my own attempt at writing a mythology-inspired musical (not about the greek stuff tho haha), so I find it both very useful and fascinating
God Jorge I love ya so much, as someone that takes great appreciation on this details, you truly are amazing for giving us this insight so everyone can now know :D
I was listening to Epic the Musical on speakers, and she mentioned that "There are Other Ways" sounds like Adele's 'Million Years Ago'. (not saying it's sampled or plagiarised) So I just think the feelings of both songs are alike.
It seems to me that the strings represent Circe’s mind and the drum her heart. Puppeteer is her baseline so to speak. In Done For she really has to use her mind more than her heart. So the strings are faster. At the end of There Are Other Ways she’s had a change of heart and is following that more. So the drums seem faster.
Wait, Circe's character is all about having power and control, pulling the strings, so her musical motif is literally pulls strings! 🤯 ETA: Hang on, I'm getting my staccato and pizzicato mixed up. But the puppets/strings bit still works.

How did you come up with the idea?

can you tell us more about the next saga?
