I ran this by my wife who has done hair for 30+ years. You don't "train" any hair. You can manipulate it with blow drying, combs, brushes, products, etc. But you're never going to make straight hair curly without some sort of outside help. The shape of your hair follicle determines how straight or curly all of your hair is. Twirling it around or combing it after a shower to "train" it will make you feel like you're doing something when all you are doing is wasting your time. That said, I have a brand new handlebar mustache. It's at a weird length where it's long enough to get in my mouth and annoy me but too short for wax. I appreciate this video very much. I'll definitely revisit it when waxing becomes part of my daily routine.
although she is correct when talking about what makes a hair straight or curly naturally I do have to somewhat disagree, when I started growing my mustache all my hair wanted to do was grow down. now after years of training it to go the direction I want the mustache hair after a shower and left alone will and does go to its respectful side of the mouth. with a small gather and flip after that I have what resembles a natural handlebar mustache. although yes I do use a brush and curlers as well as heat to get a tighter curl or a more pronounced mustache the hairs do somewhat train in a direction of growth and after time will somewhat want to go that direction... I have also had conversations with my hair dresser friend who has tought many students and has been in hair since before 2003. I'm not saying that your wife is wrong as she scientifically is correct however time has showed me otherwise.. that being said you my friend should already be using a mustache wax. Make sure to check out my video about training a mustache. I think it will help you. thanks for watching and sharing. :)
@@30DayReviews Yeah nah you're right. I was wrong. I took a comb and blow dryer to train my mustache and it made all the difference in the world. It doesn't feel like my mustache is fighting gravity. I shall never doubt you again, sir.
I’m gonna try this. See I’ve been putting oil, beard balm and mustache wax in my mustache and it hasn’t been working. Been trying the handlebar, but only my left side curls and the other side won’t
It might just be the way your hair grows naturally. I sleep on my right side so the right side of my mustache doesn't want to stay up because it gets smashed under my face when I sleep. Washing and blow drying while combing your mustache can help reshape it. Training your hair takes a lot of time.
Great video, Justin! Thanks for hitting on this subject. One other contributing factor can be finger temperature. IF you tend to have cold fingers when applying wax, try warming your fingertips up by holding onto a hot mug of coffee for a bit of time to warm your fingers. If you scrape out warm wax onto cold fingers, it will stiffen up and make it difficult to apply.
I hav ea hard time spreading wax through my mustache. It usually tacks up before I can spread it and if I manage to spread any it's not enough to hold any hairs together. Should I be heating it while I'm spreading it? And how soft should it be before I put it on my mustache? For context I was using Dove hair shaping cream before I tried the wax 😅
Hey good questions. sounds like your defiantly doing something wrong and probably using a strong hold wax. I would recommend you watch my video on how to apply a strong hold wax found at this link th-cam.com/video/uMvOPIWWSZU/w-d-xo.html
Really enjoying your vids, and as I am new to growing out a mustache and using any products, your advice is very helpful. Is it necessary to wash out beard oil applied the night before, before waxing ones mustache in the morning? Oops. Moot question, now that I've watched more of your vids in this playlist. Thanks!
HA well im glad you got to that video but so others know after seeing this comment: as long as its had time to dry and soak in completely it should NOT be an issue and does not need to be washed out.
I find that my moustache curls fine, but it always wants to tilt backwards, sp much so that it's at a 45° angle and the only thing that stops it from going further is that it gets held in place by my face. I've been using hair glue, though (Göt2B Glued), which also hates humidity, so maybe I'll try going back to waxes.
My experience is that the longer the stach is, the easier it is to train. But be advised, mine is just over six inches. It may need more training or wax the longer it gets. Good morning Justin, good morning everyone.
is that 6 inches as I recommend to measure or?? and yes the farther the hair gets form the exit point of the skin the easier it is to make it curl HOWEVER.. there comes a point that gravity takes over.
as in pure bees wax? as long as your removing it all the time completely id say its probably not going to glog pores unless your putting it directly onto the skin. I think mustache wax is the best way to go over just plain wax though as its easier to apply, remove, and includes natural oils that your mustache can absorb to help with the health of the hair.
Justin, it is normal to lose a few strands of hair when applying wax, right? Because that's been happening, even though I feel like I'm not pulling out the hair. And because of that, I've been kinda avoiding using wax sometimes.
yes that is normal. hair natuaraly falls out, however make sure your wax is nice and warm and that may help to stop any premature falling out. ut im guessing its just the norm but you notice it because they stuck to ur finger when aplying wax. great question!
Honestly, if Savvy Jacks, Firehouse, or Death Grip is "not strong enough" you are doing something very wrong!! Sorry, but those waxes hold great. But if you use it wrong it will not hold as well as you may want.

Why not? they work and you don't usually have to wear them longer than 15 minutes or less if you also blow dry them. no different then having a special hair comb for head hair.
Great tips! I have a small handlebar moustache and it helped tremendously!
Glad it helped!

Since I discovered seawater for hair, I stopped using wax, it is much cheaper, much easier to apply, and it lasts much better.

Question. I use Murray’s beeswax. Is that bad? Will it clog my pores, slow the rate of growth, not let it breathe, etc? Thanks!
