Did you know that fabric softener can make your clothes MORE flammable? 🔥🔥🔥

- Here is another reason to stop using fabric softener, it can make clothing flammable!
The left swatches were left untreated while the right were treated with fabric softener. The results speak for themselves. Fabric softener can increase the burn speed by 5-6x!!! And sadly, people have passed away from this insane phenomenon.
There are so many alteratives on the market these days instead of fabric softener. Make the switch so you don’t catch on fire :) - แนวปฏิบัติและการใช้ชีวิต
As a fabric softner, I never use electrician for this reason.
😂😂
I love it. Haha. Great response to that eletrician's comment ❤
😂
Haha
❤😂😂
As an electrician, I never use fabric softener for this reason.
Makes sense!
Yeah for this reason as an electrician I never use wire softener
😂😂
@@subneo61😂
As a firefighter, we ask that fabric softeners not use electric appliances at home
What?
you need to learn grammar. Wtf are you saying
This explains why my shirt didn't catch the day I set my self on fire, I was using an old t-shirt with no softener.
I hope you're ok!
@@Lari_SPI'm pretty sure they were joking. It is dark humor though.
Failed self-immolation
Your also lighting one on the selvage and the other on a nice cut edge. A cut edge will catch faster than the smooth selvage.
They’ve shown at the end that they have tried a edge piece
@@ShOxCookingnever in the video
I came to say this. I'm not sure why fabric softer gets so much hate that they have to mislead people in videos? Its very weird
I saw that, too
Watch the whole video. On the second example, he shows he did light a cut edge and the results were the same.
I don't use fabric softeners because the scent makes my head hurt. Same goes for those air fresheners.
Same for me but strange might be some chemical..
Same here
theres free and gentle ones just like theres free and gentle detergent and dryer sheets
Same
It also can dull clothes
Don't use fabric softener on polyamide microfiber anyway, it affects the absorbency, and will leave a residue on anything you're cleaning with it. 🤷♀️
Right?!
One is hanged horizontally and one is hanged vertically.
Sad I had to scroll for this comment because, yes you are correct.
This video is literally burning with the grain in one fabric and against in the other making the "control test" null.
This has nothing to do with fabric softener and everything to do with fabric type and the grain at which it's being set on fire.
Microfiber is 100% polyester, with or without FS it will light and melt quickly. It melted on the left, and burned on the right.because the upwards pattern allowed for more airflow for the fire, vs the sideways grain snuffing it out via lack of oxygen/airflow.
Real electricians and welders prefer to wear cotton and jean as they are the most flame retardant of the fabrics. Our highschool welding teacher would not let us wear polyester as it literally melts to the skin in a flash when set ablaze.
@@BunByteour arc flash clothing literally has warnings on the tag "may act as fuel for ignition". This isn't just some bs tiktok claim.
Also, fabric softener is HORRIBLE for your washing machine, it coats your clothing in a wax that builds up in the washer every-time you clean your clothes.
I wash my clothes in the machine abd since I hang dry them, take them out the washer and soak them fabric softener for around 30 mins.
My last machine got clogged with the wax, but this one has been with me 2 yesrs using this method, no wax at all.
Use vinegar it works well.
I just do an occasional cleaning cycle to clean that out if need be. If you don’t use too much it doesn’t really accumulate, as the next load’s detergent washes it out.
Granted I’m no saint in dosing myself lol “line one or line two, lets go for 1.5, OOOOPS two it is”
I need to make one of those arduino-peristaltic pump-dosing things.
Thats why u should use a separate tub for fabcon..isnt it the norm or just in my country 😂
I don’t use fabric softener because I don’t care enough to spend more money on something just for softer clothing
How do you keep ypur clothes smelling fresh/nice?
@@cristovalortega1968 laundry detergent lmao
It doesn't even soften clothing. It just covers it in a waxy chemical coating
Most use animal fat, too. Gross.
Its even not soften cloths..
Since there are instructions that said not to use fabric softener on microfiber cloths, he should have used a different kind of fabric.
This is why kids pajama labels will sometimes say ‘do not use fabric softener.’
I never use fabric softener! Terrible for your clothes and washer. I just use distilled white vinegar.
ew, so all your shxt smells like vinegar?
I honestly stopped using fabric softener after realizing pets are sensitive to that & I got a brand new washer & dryer and didn’t want any extra buildup to occur & honestly I don’t even notice the difference anymore I use tide pods and I think they have a small amount of fabric softener built into one of the pod chambers so I don’t even notice my clothes not being “as soft” they feel the exact same to me and it’s one less product I’m buying so that’s a plus too
For all those times we light ourselves on fire.
you should look up deaths from fabric softeners. its extremely sad
Damn guess I can’t run through fires anymore awww shucks 💀
The fabrics are not being tested equally, one is being burnt from a cut end, the other is being burnt from the stitched edge
The stitch has less loose fibers which make it more difficult to burn, the one on the right doesn’t have the edge stitch where he/she/they/zey/it/that (not getting cancelled) lit it
The fabric softener one is also burning with the threading as opposed to the control which is burning against the thread. This whole video is completely unscientific and being presented as fact, good job TH-cam removed dislikes eh?
@@bencastor9207 worst thing they’ve ever done since TH-cam rewind
Zey / it / tht 😂
Zey it tht😂😂
Luckily, I try not to set myself on fire when using a microfiber shirt. 😂
Awe I just discovered fabric softener and I was in awe of how nice my clothes felt
Plus, fabric softener practically kills microfiber's ability to absorb, rendering them kinda useless. I hate fabric softener. Vinegar is an awesome replacement in my experience.
Apparently one of the ingredients of fabric softener is animal fat which would explain why it takes a flame like a candle wick. Vinegar is a better option because it acts as a rinse aid during the rinse cycle and also helps soften fabric.
Vinegar is amazing, if I don't use that I use a laundry disinfectant for my smelly work and sports clothes.
Yes. I thought I suddenly developed body odor when I moved here 13 years ago. I took two or three showers a day sometimes. Everything smelled. I was so embarrassed. I couldn't figure it out. I was using the same washing machine and detergent that I always had. I was about to go to the doctor when I learned about vinegar in the wash. How relieved I was to find that it was my clothing and not me that was smelling. 😳🙎♀️ i have used vinegar in EVERY wash since then. But it does not prevent static cling and my "hypoallergenic" dryer sheets leave spots all over my clothes. Any suggestions to prevent static in the dryer without adding chemicals or sheets? I'm highly sensitive to chemicals and fragrances so I can't add any commercial softeners to the rinse.
@@journeyoflight7412a lot of people in the health food industry use a ball of wool thread. It works well to get rid of static.throw it in the dryer with your clothes.
I learned this in school washing a childs beddign and sheets with fabric sodtwn makes their flame resistant fabric void and very flammable
Chemicals content but I noticed the cloth have different position.
The one is vertical and the other is horizontal
One is being burned from a seam and the other is being burned on a cut with loose threads.
I’m here for the fabric softener slander 😤 the “scents” also degrades quickly and becomes v offensive and hard to remove
The tags on children's pj's says not to use fabric softener because it counteracts the flame retardent part if the fabric
It also screws up your washing machine. Dont use fabric softeners
As a certified fabric softener I can agree that I make clothes highly flammable.
Did no one notice TheLockPickingLawyer reference? 😂😂
I use Lysol and Clorox laundry sanitizer now. Don't like fabric softener, makes my skin itch while laundry sanitizer doesn't make my skin itch 👍
If I'm close enough to a fire to have my clothes catch on fire, I'm pretty sure I'm in trouble whether or not I used softener.
Please note- never to use softener . It will destroy your machine.
Moral of the story! Don’t stand in your fireplace or a open flame 🔥 😂😂😂Hahaha 😊

Did you know fluffy burns better than not fluffy... are you oblivious to physics?
I think fabric softener ruins clothes over time. It leaves a waxy substance and sometimes can leave permanent spots on clothing. Bad for washing machine too. I never use it. My mom told me to try the white vinegar (distilled) and it works well. :)
Good thing I’m never submerged in fire😂
Thats why it says that on the bottles/jugs....but im not near much fire anyway 😂
I stopped using fabric softener when I saw how damaging it is for my washing machine. I now use vinegar.
don't use fabric softener on your microfiber. or bleach or anything but mild soap
One reason i don't use fabric softener is because i don't want to damage my washer.
do not wash lab coats with fabric softener, noted
Also skin moisturisers / emolients does the same.
Very good to know, there are other reasons NOT TO USE FABRIC SOFTENERS, EXAMPLE, If you use fabric softeners to make your towels nice and soft, they won’t absorb the water from you body very well at all and it takes several washings to actually get all of it out as well. 😮
The left weave is horizontal the right weave is vertical that’s why they are burning differently. Keep in mind this cloth was originally serged on all four sides. 😅
Font use fabric softener on microfiber nor towels, it makes them less absorbant
Just stop drop and roll youll be fine
I love your channel, it's very interesting
I cannot always ensure that i am being consistently truthful, so my pants being on fire is an ongoing concern.
As an electric appliance, we ask that fabric softners not use firefighters at home
That’s why you’re not supposed to use fabric softener on your baby’s clothes cause it makes the flame retardant material be flammable/ easier to burn. Moms stop using softener unless it’s made specifically for baby clothes
As a fabric softener, I feel attacked.
Perfect just what I need
As it turns out, I would rather burn alive than iron my clothes. I just realize this about myself😅🔥
well, that's a thing to get off the shopping list.... any safe fragrance to add?
Yeah maybe i shouldn't wash my nomex suit with fabric softener (even though it feels like it badly needs some) but my pillow case should be fine. Don't usually have fire near my bed and if i do i should get out of there fast either way
Or, just don't smoke or light matches near yourself. I'm pretty sure this is why beds are full of bromine containing flame retardants, which some beds smell very bad and basically need to be off gased for a week or more before using.
have u tested how to get rid of fabric softener from clothes ?
i sometimes buy from companies old storage welding clothes never used but washed in who knows what before sale
i know u can use vinegar (soak for some time) and special detergent for firefighter clothes (for nomex etc.)
but never tested if this works or not
i know naphtha can disolve silicones etc in fabric softeners but i dont know it it can damage the clothes after soaking them in it (of course washing them after that )
maybe it will be good comparison for next video :D
welding is becoming really popular right now and video about washing fire retardant clothes , what to do to not make them flammable etc should get some interest
Same my husband is a pipe welder and just leanerd not long ago nit suppose to wash his clothes in softner
@@aliciahinman3388 it makes big difference
I have 2 pair of weldiny clothes one was washed with fabric softener by mistake
Then in vinegar etc to try to remove it
Still easy to make it burn
Where second pair too washed in vinegar etc (not to use fabric softener) and is way more resistant
Breath more , you sweat less , it wont stick to the body in summer like the one washed in fabric softener
I stop washing any clothes with it
Just pour some vinegar and rinse
You wont get any smell of vinegar after that so no worry
But clothes after vinegar feel much more "soft" even without it just washing detergent breath more , no sweat like crazy , no sticking to skin etc and way less sweat "smell" because of that
Extra rinse cycle after lot of detergent can help too if welding / thick clothes stick to the skin in summer
@@ErtsenPlayGames just noticed that my husband has the same name as u too and spelled the same way lol . I just cut off fabric softner all together I only use it on my bedding and blankets now just cause I still have a few bottles and don't want to waste it but with my husbands clothes I just wash in persil or tide hygienic clean cause that's what works the best when removing stains but I don't use nothing else to wash his clothes with I let them soak in hot water in the washer machine for 1 hour b4 I start the cycle . do u think cleaning vinigar will strip the softner out of his clothes ? I was thinking about getting the downy rinse clean stuff they just came out with but dont know if its worth it .
If you use it on some loads, it will get on all the clothes you wash on that machine. Those chemicals stick to the inside of the machine and get partially dissolved during each wash.
I don’t use it anymore. My clothes feel brand new every time I put them on now
I’m cheap so I only buy what I need
Nah imma do my own thing
Good to knwo also do not use fabric softer when washing jeans you rest wear and tear
You mean fabric softener make my fits more fire 🔥
i use it all the time, just never on towels
I saw a video that if you use cotton pillows it will absorb all the oil from your face and hairs so to get benefit use silk pillows because cotton pillows absorbs oil, can you please tell is that true?
As a normal person, we don't hold matches to our clothing. So we will continue to use fabric softener.
As a human,I never use neither of these for this reason
Is there a way to "remove" fabric softener on clothes if on previous wash I use it?
Still using 3 extra capfuls in my clothes, I’ll take my chances
I rather softer clothes and the smell and a chance of burn 😂
Why not try scent beads? They add scent but no conditioner
@@cleanfreakshe said he likes the softness tho
@@cleanfreakswe just have to let natural selection take it’s course sometimes…
Even then there are other downsides to using fabric softener (bad for your skin, bad for your washer, etc)
Scent beads have a bunch of artificial chemicals. There is a difference between smelling clean and smelling like a bunch of artificial fragrances.
Do not try to deny me my comforts
But it makes my clothes so soft and makes it smell so good too 😭
What about scent beads? Are those bad too? 😮
After years of using a twin tub washing machine, fabric softener is a dream. Secondly - this test isnt controlled.
Ima keep using the softener, folks. Unconvinced.
What are the other reasons?
This makes me think of my OSHA class and the Silent Spring Institute #silentspringinstitute
Idk how being slightly more flammable makes having softer clothes not worth it.
I mean depending on your job, sure. But for most ppl it being slightly more flammable will have zero effect on their life.
Also, we take way more risks in our lives than this. This is such a small step in risk reduction. It's basically equivalent to not changing any of your behavior at all.
My clothes are hardly ever near fire
As a wire, I always use electrician for this reason.
well if you have a closet on fire that seems to be a bigger issue doesn’t it
What about using dryer sheets? Aren’t they fabric softeners too?
Does it happen to either liquid softener or dryer sheets?
Still using softener
What is the alternative?
Also makes it less absorbent
Did you know your car is a mobile bomb because of all the flammable fluids? Also, did you know that water is wet
There’s no risk of having a clothes that would burn faster when treated with a fabcon. If your house get caught on fire everything will turn into ashes and shit regardless weather you have a clothes treated of fabcon or not
Nice info❤
well i use a dryer to dry my clothes after the washing with fabric softener
“…burn my office down..” bro cement won’t melt. Prison cell is fireproof
Mom’s back in the day all knew this kind of stuff. This generation needs help.
Fabric softener may make the clothes softer and less static, but the chemicals within it are flammable and conductive! There's a difference between static and electricity, please don't hurt yourself on accident.
Dont use fabric softener, its bad for your washer anyways. Use distilled white vinegar. I promise you wont smell it when its done, it softens your cloths and the acidity helps to remove stains. And most importantly it dosnt damage your washer. If you really want scented cloths use dryer sheets.
Polymers have a low flashpoint.
Good thing I don’t wear micro fiber
Cool. Now can we talk about all the reasons to stop wearing/using microfibre?
I am all ears
I use it as room spray, shit my whole house will be on fire now 😮
I've tried vinegar it does literally nothing at all, only fabric softener does
As a human being, wearing polyester is an L
Fabric softener damages clothing faster than if washed normally.
Hidradenitis Suppurativa warrior here and I can attest that fabric softeners are designed to keep us in chaos. If I wash or use any fabric with a softeners, I am doomed for weeks before I can find a clear skin balance again.😂
If you love your family, you'll avoid fabric softeners.
Next time have the 'grain' of the fabric going the same way.
