2024 UPMAS Outstanding Researcher Award: Dr. PAOLO ANTONIO S. SILVA

The 2024 UPMAS Outstanding Researcher Award is given to Dr. Paolo Antonio S. Silva (Class 2002) in recognition of his seminal publications on ocular telehealth for diabetic retinopathy, ultrawide field retinal imaging and artificial intelligence applications that led to a 20 percent improvement in retinopathy diagnosis. Dr. Silva has 161 publications, including 67 original research articles, 30 study group publications, 38 review articles, 9 clinical guidelines, and 15 book chapters that garnered him an H-index of 45. For his contributions, Dr. Silva received numerous awards including The Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) Awardee for Medicine in 2013, Outstanding Young Scientist in the Field of Ophthalmology from the National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines in 2014, the Outstanding Book Award in 2018 from the Department of Science and Technology, and the Google Research Innovator in 2023 from Google Cloud. Dr. Silva is an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the Harvard Medical School. He is also the recipient of the Newton Agham Grant to develop cost effective diabetic retinopathy screening strategies in the Philippines.
