I'm jealous. Too hot and humid? Hibernate in the summer. People in the north are stupid! They look at Florida's summer like summer in the north. They should be thinking about their summer like our winters. Stay inside during extreme heat,how hard is this to understand? It gets to -10 to -25 up here.. F that! I'm going to move soon. I'd take Florida in a heartbeat! One of my friends lived here in MN all his life, he moved to Florida 3 yrs ago, and loves it! Keep telling me to move there. I'm actually working on it. You can function in the heat, you really can't in the extreme cold.

Living in the South I’ve long followed a winterizing suggestion I saw in an Impala SS forum many years ago. I simple move the a/c from Max to Normal. Job done!
Yeah, here in FL we have to add a few lbs of air to the tires when daytime highs are in the 60s instead of the 90s. That's it. Winterizing done!

I've owned my 2004 C5 Z06 for 13 years here in Calgary Alberta, where we have 5mo of winter and -35 temps. Mines parked in my insulated garage, sits on 4 rubber sport floor tiles and fill tank halfway with 94 Techron + Techron additive and no issues, along with trickle charger and thanks to winter parking she's only got 50,000mi 👍 thanks for your content.
Good video, few other tips. I have an 04 Convertible, I unlatch the top so the seals are not tight, Put paper towels under the wipers so the blades are not on the window, put Plywood under the tires, and put dryer sheets in the engine bay, in the car, and in the exhaust so rodents are deterred from making a nest.

OMG! Thank you so much! Ive read so many forums where people say "store your C7 with 1/4 tank or less so the fuel sending units don't corrode" and that made NO SENSE TO ME. My whole life people who own classics say "Full tank, no moisture" ect. Which logically made the most sense to me.

I viewed a video in which the top C7 engineer Tadge Juechter did indeed recommend that on the C7 generation to keep the fuel level below 1/4 tank with some Techron added. There was also something mentioned about the fuel filler neck not allowing much air or condensation to enter but I don't recall the exact details.
I saw the same Tadge video, and stored both my 2014 and 2018 C's that way. The fuel sender sticking at full was also an issue on the C6. In addition to the fuel prep, I also change the oil & filter, clean, wax and cover the car, add 5lbs to the tires - in our area, storage is at most 4 months, and mine is in a climate controlled garage that never goes below 60F.@@holdenmagroin950
as far as the battery is concerned, unhook the ground a on the fully charged battery, and hook it back up in the spring. That's it, no trickle, or tender, or jumper cables, all of which I have. Coming to you live from Vancouver Island, in an unheated garage. 2nd week october to 1st of march or so. btw, Thanks Lyle for the gas peddle hold down tip, in the spring before starting.
I always store my cars with the axles / tires hanging supported by jack stands with rubber buffers, strategically placed. The big one you mentioned is to run the vehicle low on fuel and replace with "Recreational Fuel" AND Stabil. Cars start right up perfectly every time, carburetor and fuel injected. Especially here in the Frozen Wasteland of MI.
I appreciate Lyle the business man also . While I am here to strengthen my corvette stewardship ability, the other side of lyle taught me how to support favored content.
I now know to click like and subscribe for stuff I like because the tracking software used to generate payments for content creators looks at that. As it does the length of time viewing commercials, total viewing time , time on site, and if one leaves a comment , which I always do on favored sites, to make up for not watching many commercials.

It's also important to add dryer sheets to the engine and passenger compartments to prevent or at least discourage mice from making their home in your car.
I've got the big task of redoing the entire braking system on my 1994 up here in Idaho, so looks like this winter will be more like long-term storage of fat to keep me warm in the garage hahahahaha

I was feeling smugly bright by the knowledge I don't need to put my Corvette away for the winter, and then you came along and reminded me that I too have to do a complete brake job on my Corvette, and wouldn't winter be a great time to do it. So I'll be taking a chunk of otherwise drivable weather to saddle myself with needed down-time via brakes too. I was feeling smart, and now I feel only the warmth & none of the cleverness.

All good tips. I would like to add one thing to your list though. I always run down to my local tractor supply, or farm type store, and get some mouse repellent and put it in a few small dishes in the garage and around the car. It smells like peppermint and I suppose keeps the mice away, because I’ve had no trouble of them getting into my C2.
I mentioned that to another commenter earlier--cotton balls soaked in peppermint oil do a really great job of keeping them out of a car! Lyle
I am old school , and hosted a feral cat looking to have kittens, with the result that I now have two offspring that hang around, and are now getting old, because cats are helplessly territorial and that is all they know, although other neighbors feed them.
One of the things they don't want you to know is that Ancient Egyptians worshipped cats because of their ability to protect corvette wiring. I have even caught the dominant one napping on my corvette soft top, such is the dedication.
I also recommend putting dryer sheets in the engine bay and interior to keep the mice away.
That's a good idea also. I have had trouble with mice in the past.

There is a channel that does experiments with mice, dryer sheets and Irish spring soap did not work at all. Different forms of Peppermint is what they had success with.

Great content as always. I've got a few more things that I do here in Wisconsin for storing my C3 and C4 in unheated storage units. I put Sta-Bill in the gas tanks and then fill them very full to get as much air out of the tanks as possible. Then I drive them to work the Sta-bill through the fuel system. I put down plastic on the concrete floors to keep the moisture from coming up from the concrete. Dryer sheets in the car to keep the mice away. Moth balls and mouse traps by the tires or jack stands to keep the critters away. And I put steel wool in the ends of the tailpipes to again keep the critters from crawling into the exhaust. I take the batteries out and keep them in my basement on pieces of wood and not the concrete floor. Then I charge them periodically over the winter months. I have put the cars on jack stands for the winter. It's probably not critical, but it does keep the weight off of the suspension when the car is sitting for 6 months. And finally, I put the car covers on. Then it's sleep tight until next spring. Hope someone finds this useful.
I had to comment on the level of knowledge enacted here. Because, I was once getting repair advice from an electrical engineer from across the country, thanks to the internet, when he said he would never leave his car unattended when hooked up to house current. He said the risk isn't worth it.
I figured an electrical engineer would have good advice, so I pass it on. Although I have occasionally charged a battery overnight, I do recognize the potential of a device going bad, lighting strikes, power surges , lots of stuff besides the expected could happen when the car is connect to a live circuit. If that consistent energy gets to your car uncontrolled, it's check the insurance policy and cryin' time together.
(I once talked to a couple that were buying a new washer dryer set because of a power surge. The guy said it even knocked two light bulbs out of their sockets. he said it was because the laundry room was right where the electrical line entered the house. Said the electric company was buying new appliances in his neighborhood, upon request.
A compromise - Leave your battery tender hooked up to the battery and plug it in once a week or once every two weeks overnight (or during the day), then leave it unplugged for the other 6.5 days (or 13.5 days). @@richardelliott8352

I live in Missouri, and although it does get cold at times, it just doesn't snow much anymore (I sound like an old-timer😅). As long as there isn't salt on the streets, I drive it some in the winter.....couple times a week, maybe a dozen miles or so each time, enough to warm it up and get the fluids circulating. Now watch, we'll have record snows this year after I said that🥶
Lyle, Great info as usual. And yes I'm a 27%er. Always find fantastic info on this channel. Two things where I think we may differ thought. Red Stabil, unless they have changed the formula in the past 6-7 years is not ideal for any long term storage. I used it to treat a Honda ATV. Tried to start it just 3 months later and the gas had congealed in the carb and had to rebuild it a second time. After advice from a local small engine repair shop, recommending Seafoam in the tank as a preservative, The ATV started every time over a year later with the same fuel in the tank. The seafoam seamed to do much better at preventing the ethanol sludge and preserving the gas.
Secondly regarding your reply to another viewer about the octane level of nonethanol fuel, check out the following video testing the impacts of 89-95 octane fuel in C5's and C6's. Without raising the octane of the nonethanol fuel to 93+ octane, you are likely losing significant HP/TQ from the ECU pulling a ton of timing. So maybe the answer is that you avoid putting out any cash on a grudge race until you've run a tank or two through you car after you break it out of hibernation. 😅 JB

I have been parking my collectible cars on carpet squares for the last 25 years. No issues with tires ever.
Good tips. I did all these things when going out o sea for 6 month deployments. unhook the battery, put some stabil in the tank, put a car cover on it. Also parked it in the long term parking lot with barbed wire fences. (keeps the bums away. Also kept the car keys with me, so no surprises when returning home, like a family member borrowed the car and wrecked it.

May have missed this information so apologies if I'm being redundent. If your insurance carrier allows thi option, call them to ask about putting your car on "winter rates" if you know you won't be driving for a period of time. Saves some dollars. I usually put my C5 to bed on or before December 1 and it won't come out until the next April. Then it just takes a phone call to my agent to restablish full coverage.

Keep an eye on the battery tender from time to time also. Somehow i tripped the ground fault receptical and didn't notice it for four months so yeah.

I live 80 miles from the Canadian border above Seattle in the Pacific NW, so we have fairly mild Winters. I will drive my 03 C5Z throughout the Winter as long as it’s only wet, not frozen or snowy, which is most of the time.
I do an oil change so the car sits with nice fresh oil. Bounce dryer sheets in the cabin and trunk. As well, hand massage a liberal amount of leather conditioner and let it sit and absorb.
Lyle’s informative and instructional videos along with other you tube content has inspired me to do many modifications myself to great self satisfaction. But he has also gained a customer for life for everything I don’t take on myself especially since I live 3 blocks from his (Steve’s) Shop. Dr. Ray is is a knowledgeable and communicative mechanic who is particular and thorough, plus turns out his wife is my barber. Shop local I say. The entire shop is willing to listen to my excited newbie chatter and answer my many questions. I feel extremely lucky to have one of our nations leading corvette expert facilities at my doorstep ready to help me when needed. My Corvette is in excellent hands and we fear nothing, except a dual motor Tesla from a dead stop. 😡. Don’t do it! Don’t.

I prefer to take my cars out for a short drive of about 20 km or so, on a dry clear day, approximately every two weeks during the winter months, just to keep things moving.

Thanks for your great videos. I am a subscriber and have been for quite a while. One thing I do here in NH in my garage is I buy a 4X8 sheet of foam insulation board that they use on the siding of a house and cut it into 2X2 squares. I park on those with tires inflated to 40lbs and never had flat spots.

Sta-Bil! Works! Also, I would put the car on jack stands. It prevents flat-spotting.
I would choose jackstands, too, but the vast majority of people who own newer corvettes don't own them (or a jack, for that matter) and might not have the knowledge to lift it safely. Thus, I recommend the drive-on tire savers. Lyle
I have a 02 roadster and one thing I always do winter or summer in the garage is top up but not latched, doors, deck lid, hood closed not latched.
Subscribe people geez doesn’t cost you anything. Lyle thank you for reminding the 73% great information as always as my C3 is going into hibernation in a storage facility. I do need to top my fluids and the gas suggestion with the additive was helpful. I can also do some projects on my C3 while it sits good reminder.
I also let the harmonic balancer rest during the winter by removing the serpentine belt and i bet the idler pulley spring also being grateful for that.

This advice is good for any car going into storage. I won’t put a cover on my car because I don’t want it to be a place for mice to make a home. I’ve taken precautions to hopefully deter rodents, but you never know.
Any dust on the car can be easily washed off. You wash it during the year any way.
Lyle I live in Tennessee we some snow and ice 🧊. It’s a mild winter and when we get a few good days but cold I pull it out and drive a few blocks. No snow on the road at all just dry and cold. I also keep it on a tender.

I'm admit I'm one of the 73%ers as I've watched many of your videos but now a subscriber. I don't own a Vette (had a '79 many moons ago) but would still love to get another. Being on the back nine of life I've gotten more conservative (ugh!) Was a gearhead back in my younger days and still enjoy watching chat by guys that turn wrenches for a living. Have friends and relatives that are mechanics so car talk is never far away. Anyway love your videos, the presentation is very clear and I think importantly the length of the videos is just right. Keep up the great work. If I even get that Vette I know where I can go for service as I'm not that far from you. :)

I'm not so sure about stabil anymore. Used it for some time, then saw several articles that suggested it turned into a semi sludge when used. This left thick red deposits in carbs and injectors. I read and saw enough to find another product.

What about keeping the fuel under 1/4 tank to not cause problems with the fuel sending unit sticking on the C5s.
Is it better to put you car on jack stands or a lift for the longevity of your tires or are the tire cradle a better option?
Dryer sheet in engine compartment, hatch, & each floor board will keep mice away.
I store my car, not a corvette, in Florida for nine months over the hot humid summer. I disconnect the battery cables, use desiccants fir the interior and also use charcoal briquettes in a container on the interior of the car and pump up the tires to the maximum listed on the sidewall, usually 59 psi. I’ve been storing it for 4 years and so far no mould and it starts right up when I reconnect the battery and no square tires. Previously I had a vehicle with cheap Chinese tires and they would be square for up to two weeks. With this car I have continentals and no issues.
When you buy tires, if you want to lessen the flat spot, avoid tires with nylon cord. Nylon holds a "memory" until it is heated from driving to loose the flat spot "memory". Polyester and the other fabrics hold much less flat spot memory than nylon.

I'm fortunate to live far enough south that there are very few days that I would not want to take my car out so I usually drive my C4 at least one or more days every week.
If your car is going to be in a damp environment, or if you’re concerned it may be damp. I’ve used a a bombardier product called lube , it’s an anti corrosive spray I used on my outboards and seadoos . It’s a very light spray oil that will coat metal part , wiring etc and prevent corrosion . It may look oily when you spray it on but it will be almost gone by spring .
I’d that particular one is not available look for a marine anti corrosive spray .
What's winter? Oh yeah, that's the time of year to put the convertible top down. Yup, I'm from Arizona. 🤠
Instead of lifting the tires with jacks, what about tire cradles?
Lyle, I have been told to keep the gas below 1/2 tank, because the theory is that gas along with the chemicals in it will coat the fuel sender unit and over time your sender will no longer be accurate. What do you think. I have a 2007 Z51.
Lyle, to make sure that either Techron or Stabil gets into BOTH tanks make sure the gas tank is below 1/2…1/4 tank is good…if above 1/2 tank fuel will only fill the right tank…fuel burns out of the right tank then the left…C5 Diag here…you told me when I visited your shop a few months ago the shop doesn’t do “heavy” diagnostics…maybe some diagnostics videos you do would be different on your channel.
While I agree with your assessment of the workings of the C5/C6 fuel system, I was speaking in general terms regarding ALL Corvettes.. Full tanks are better than empty tanks for long-term storage in our opinion. I appreciate your input. Lyle
I use Sea Foam for off-season fuel storage. It works very well and is a great fuel system cleaner as well. I also use Sea Foam in two cycle pre-mix fuel. Never have to disassemble those tiny carburetors on my outdoor power equipment.
I agree on adding additives to a 1/4 or less full tank but it was my understanding that a siphon is used to transfer fuel from one tank to the other to keep the center of gravity consistent on C5 and C6 models, i.e., the fuel level drops at the same rate for both tanks. Am I on drugs????

the question is: Regarding Winter storage - what's the best way to store the C5 convertible top?
Do I just leave it up or down? Windows rolled down? or leave it partially up with the Front and back "up" -
Basically is there a risk to the weather seals developing a memory from being locked down for months at a time?
Hi Frank! You will definitely want to leave the top up and secured, windows closed. This keeps the top from being wrinkled and the rear window glass adhesive from being stressed. It also keeps creepy-crawlies and dust from having free access to the interior. Lyle :)

I'm in TN and I own a 2014 C7 and she's a garage queen but driven every two weeks for about 15 minutes. I never have any of the issues you speak about because of this. Are there really people who won't drive their cars All winter??
I was thinking just the other day about this subject, great timing. My car will remain in the garage throughout the winter and hope to drive it every 30 days or so if the temperatures get warm enough. will then ensure all is good for the next 30 days. You mentioned upgrading the lights, would you recommend the head lights first, then the front corners, then the rest of the car? thanks for all the great information!!!!!!
The taillights/3rd brake light/Reverse Lamps/License Lamps and Rear Sidemarkers are the easiest to do, as you don't need access to the underside of the car to install. them. The headlight LED bulb conversion is next easiest, but time-consuming due to lack of workspace in that area. The park lamps are best done with the car in the air. Lyle :)
the 2024 C8 has auto close on the frunk. How to use the charger without keeping the light on in the frunk or damaging the wire?
Hi lyle i had a bad experience with mice in Toronto eating seats someone told me to use the sheets like fleecy you put in dryer when u wash I've moved to saskatchewan cold here but have adopted that and place the sheets in engine compartment near wiring seats inside my c4 and the last three years have had no problem with my new interior
Great info. How about foam plugs for exhaust and mothballs spread on floor to keep the mice away.
I have used mothballs and they leave an aroma that can last for weeks after removal.
What's your thoughts on putting pepper on dryer sheets in the car on the battery floorboards to keep the Little Critters from getting in there
That is ok, but I believe that cotton balls soaked with natural peppermint oil is more effective. Lyle :)

Nice video/suggestions but I was under the impression that the new Corvettes (C7) should be stored with only a quarter or less tank of fuel. Please comment, thank you!
There is a lot of conjecture in the Corvette world about this. In our opinion, putting a bottle of Stabil into an almost empty tank and then filling it up is the safest way to store the car. It reduces the air/moisture available in each tank to a minimum and keeps the fuel pumps and sending units immersed in fuel...which is what they were designed to be immersed in. We believe that having the tanks as empty as possible promotes premature corrosion of the sending unit rheostats and shortening the lifespan of diaphragms and seals in the pump / sending unit itself. These opinions are based on our 50 years as a Corvette-specific shop.
