Lyle I believe this is the most moving video you have ever made. Since I was a child in the sixties I dreamed of some day owning a Corvette. Now I have a beautiful C5 and I feel even more privileged to own one of these purely american sports cars. Thanks for what you do.

It’s now ! Just turned 59 and as you know I just bought my dream C5, a 1999 FRC garage kept in pristine condition with only 19k miles. Love it. Put nearly 500 miles on it in just 2 weeks.
Ironically you mentioned about paying more per month! My current plan which I’ve put on an Xcel spreadsheet: I’ll be making an extra 20% (about $100) payment every month plus a one time $1,500 annually in July, it will reduce my loan by 26 months and ill save about $2600 in interest over the life of the loan. A total of almost $10k in balloon payments.
Also have a high yield savings account setup for $100/month automatic deposit. So I’ll have $1,200 annually saved up for maintenance issues because shit happens and something will need replacing.
Before I found my FRC about a month ago I had 2 options: Save up for a larger deposit and buy a C5 next spring/summer OR wait until I retire in 5 years and get it. Lyle you’re spot on, tomorrow is not guaranteed and NOW was the right time to fulfill my 5 year passion of getting a C5 ! Lyle , thanks for all you do for the corvette community!

I didn't go through that much red tape. I just HAD to buy the C4 that fell in my lap (driveway) and took out a loan from a shark with fmia connections. She may have cost me an arm and a leg.. but this car is WORTH it! I am mostly happy that she has power steering as well as an AUTOMATIC transmission. It comes in handy these days.

This video really hit home with me Lyle. The last point you made where tomorrow isn't guaranteed is what my mother said to me 3 years ago while I was having a cup of coffee with her. She knew since I was 9 I wanted a corvette and would never let it go. She told me that while I was able to enjoy it go ahead and buy one. Especially since I had a company car to drive during the week. I will never forget the feeling when I signed the paperwork with her sitting next to me and then finally a week later picking it up with her in the passenger seat. That feeling for me will last a lifetime. I still remember the amount of looks we got driving the Vette back home while everyone in their Falcons and Commodores were sitting there and staring in envy.

Good info and sage advice, Lyle. I’ve had four Corvettes over a 50 year period; I owned them when I could, and sold them when I needed to. Be responsible, but don’t be too shy to pull the trigger. I have no regrets about having enjoyed those cars and wish I had held on to that ‘58 ! I’ll never let go of my ‘04… 😊

In 2017 I was looking for a vette, I ended up finding a 2014 Mustang GT/CS with 14,000 miles for a very reasonable price. 2022 I was looking for a vette and ended up finding a beautifully kept 2017 370Z for reasonable price. I have been looking for a Porsche Cayman since the beginning of the year and this last week found a 2 owner 2003 Anniversary Corvette with only 11,000 and never been driven in the rain, finally got my vette.

Lyle, you really hit home with this vid. I leased a new 92 C4 in the & turned it in 5 yrs later, but always wanted one more. Bought my C6 last year (with the invaluable help of your vids) at the ripe old age of 70. Knock on wood; I take care of myself, am in good shape & work out intensely, but there are no guarantees! I almost misted up a little at the end of the vid. This is why you're one of those people I'd most like to have a beer with.

Bought my Z cash too at 19! Was it smart? Heck no. But the fun and memories a year and a half into ownership are totally worth it. It’s needed a lot of work and I’m currently rebuilding the whole top end of the motor [lost a lifter and came across a melted piston :( ] but I’m going to throw it back together this week and fingers crossed I won’t have any major issues for a while. But I probably will because I drive it to it’s limits regularly

I’m real tired but I’ll see if I can get it fully done before work tomorrow

I purchased my first Corvette after my wife passed away. I was 77 years old. It was an 87 C4. Two years later, I moved to Florida and left it to my eldest son because he helped me find it. I found a new wife and was experiencing Corvette withdrawal. She helped me find a 96 Corvette, and we try to go for a 45-minute to an hour ride every week. I'll be 83 this June 19th, and we both look forward to every trip in our C4 Corvette. 😊

I can't imagine what might make your car rare, but I'll take your word on it. I never sweat the color on a used car, and wound up with a black convertible, which can be very pretty. But I do think a more visible color, like a silver car, has real safety advantages in a world awash with SUV's and drivers using their phones.

kind of nice to listen to a man who has built a life around work he enjoys, because such a realization of life's possibilities is rare and wise. The rarity is evident from all the angry people running around so prominently today, and the non seriousness of their choices clearly indicates that critical thinking is a useful life tool.
Despite what is clearly the most beautiful body style of all the corvettes in the background , I would suggest that the ultimate realization of a pleasure car is an open car, making the convertible the ultimate expression of a corvette, if anyone was wondering.
Modern city traffic has taken a lot of the luster off of that position, but once in a location where driving is pleasurable , the concept becomes self evident. Besides being in a position where people outside the car will talk to you inside, one of the other features never realized in a closed car is being able to smell the different varieties of trees or the meadow grass when driving on a mountain road.
I am not a hard core gear head, I just have accepted transportation as a need and enjoy well designed machines, which lead me to the almost practical corvette. I consider my C5 as a suitable platform to financially support through the years. It serves my needs as a fun car to own, and a modern car , while offering less required owner involvement, would only offer me more advanced creature comforts and electronics , since I don't desire more speed or buying more gas.
Don't get me wrong , the earlier cars have fantastic top tier styling, but put next to the car in the video, might only come off as "cute".

Lyle…your dealing the straight scoop…one of my biggest things with cars is that if you want to keep it nice, it cannot be parked outside 24/7…even with a good car cover. If you can’t garage your Corvette (or other car you really car about) expect it to be destroyed by the elements. I have neighbors with three car garages who have so much junk in them they have to park their brand new cars in the driveway. Within a few years it really shows. The rubber starts looking like it’s rotting, clear coat starts to fail, and the interior suffers. Thanks for all the good advice you provide for us!

Another great video Lyle! In 2009 at age 45 I got my first Corvette, a '94 coupe. Loved, owned and DROVE that car for 12 years. Was it the "latest and greatest".....no. However it was just FUN to drive. In '20 I picked up a '12 GS convertible (my first drop top) and within a week realized I'd never be without a convertible again. The C6 was such a great car to drive I soon found myself trading in the '94 for a '19 coupe. Loved the C7 so much I searched and ended up trading the C6 for a C7 convertible, so at one point I was fortunate enough to have two beautiful C7's in my garage. Last summer a deal for a brand new C8 basically fell into my lap so....yup.... traded the '19 in for the C8 HTC. Two completely different yet amazing cars and I couldn't be happier with both. That being said, every time I see a clean C4 on the road I just smile and wonder if I'll have another one someday. Through 14 years of Corvette ownership no matter what car it was I was/am driving I always had to turn and look back at is as I'm walking away. Any Corvette is never "just another car". Keep up the great work you and everyone at CS do!

Thanks for this. I bought my first Corvette two years ago at the age of 61. A 74 C3 that was about 95% restored. I paid with cash I inherited from my father and at the time I felt more than a little guilty, but now I realize that this car is my Dad's final gift to me and every minute I spend driving it or working on it is time spent reflecting on what a great Dad he was. I was able to make a good decision on which C3 to buy based largely on your advice. I bought my Vette as soon as it was practical, and had I waited even a year, I think the moment would have been lost. I was glad to hear to tell folks to not wait too long.

Amen Lyle ! I’m so glad I bought mine when I did. Raised my family, got my kids through college, then bought my C5 Z06. Young enough to enjoy it, but old enough to be responsible with it. I’ve tracked it, toured with it, showed it, and it has generally enhanced my life. It’s not my daily driver, of course, but it gets driven every week. It brings me so much joy, and, thankfully my wife loves it too. Thank you for all the great content you produce, this one is one of your best !
