According to Graham Lineham the reason they did the sewage gag is because during the Father Stone episode when filming the golf scene they used two rain machines and it was raining hard anyway so all the actors were soaked to the skin. When filming was done Dermot Morgan said to the writers "what are you going to do next? Cover us in shite". So they wrote this episode especially for that.
Ted explaining the difference between small and far away to Dougal reminds me of my conversations with flat earthers.
I still don't get it. Only got it once.. mind you I'm a bit like Dougal! 😂

Ted was a long time ago. In an interview Norton said it's weird, kids coming up to him saying they love him in it, "You weren't born when I was in Father Ted!"
J.J. Of course it’s different mate. This was broadcast at a time where there was a limited number of channels and lots of people saw it because of that. What makes it feel special to norton in modern day is that with all the plethora of content available, people who watch Father Ted have to make a conscious effort to find it and watch it. Hardly stupid logic.
Pat Shortt, the actor who played Tom (the guy driving the sewage truck), is actually one of Ireland’s greatest comedians. He was part of the Irish comedy duo D’Unbelievables with Jon Kenny. You should see his other stuff like Killinaskully, another Irish sitcom he was in, and films like The Garage and The Flag.
I think this guy actually makes watching father ted funnier, well done I didn’t think that would be possible

Nice work as per usual. Dermot and Ardal were very cold that day when they were covered in that slurry. Ardal found a farmhouse in the area and begged its residents to let him have a bath. They kept the bar of soap, he used.

I'm familiar with the inverse holiday, where it's so crappy that being home again feels like the holiday instead.
The small/far away scene wasn't in the original script. It was ad-libbed by the cast in rehearsals and then pencilled into the finished version.
There is a 'magic road' here in the UK. In fact I think there's a couple of them. One is a tunnel that goes under the river Tyne. The way it was built kinda gives an optical illusion as the tiles on the walls are not parallel to the road surface so as you are approaching the exit going north The wall tiles kinda makes you think you're going straight or slightly down hill but you're actually going up a small gradient. It's hard to explain but you think that your car is going to speed up slightly but infact you need to give it a bit more gas to get up the small incline. It's really odd.
I will point out that it might not be the Tyne tunnel. It could be the Mersey tunnel, or the Dartford tunnel. Not sure.
There`s one in Ayrshire it`s called the Electric Brae.
Graham Norton's character, Father Noel, appears in 2 other episodes. One from Series 2 where they're stuck in a plane with him. And Series 3 Episode 4 where they encounter him in a similarly claustrophobic environment.
There actually is a road like Ted said in Scotland. But it only looks as though things a flowing "up" because of the topography of the surrounding area. It's called the "Electric Brae".

This was the TV appearance that really introduced Graham Norton to TV audiences in Britain. It was as a result of his appearances here that he was offered his own show 'So Graham Norton' on Channel 4 ....and the rest is history.
Yep. Between Father Ted and his first chat shows on Channel 4, he also did some standup comedy stuff as well.
Actually he got So Graham Norton after winning a Best Newcomer award when he stood in on The Jack Docherty Show on Channel 5.

Just found your channel the other day and subscribed. I love watching Americans reacting to Father Ted. Not everyone gets the humour but you seem to get it no problem. I also love the way you play along, almost as if you’re a character in the show.

@@spots7630 That's the thing. Those sites aggregate a small number of professional reviews with thousands of reviews by ordinary viewers. So it reflects both critics and the public audience.
I saw The Commitments back in the day and it was pretty good, mainly because of the music rather than anything else. It might well be better than Sing Street, I honestly don't know or care. I just don't like people being needlessly rude on the internet.
My favourite episode with the classic 'small far away' gag.
Ah, the week's holiday in the caravan. Highlight of the year when I was a kid. Not as bad as this, obviously. Surely the big 'week away' is something to be done in a future episode of Derry Girls. I never understood how British people, or even my own classmates in school, could go off to Spain or somewhere, and for more than a week. Were they all rich or something? Ted and Dougal's holiday is much more relatable for me, and even then they did 2 weeks as well.
This is a good episode to start Americans off with, just so they can go "Is that Graham Norton?"
Though I would never support the paper, the Sun used to do promotions like that - get 2 weeks holiday in Spain for £20 per person. Of course it would all be through one company which sponsored it and they would charge more for advertising space because more people would buy the newspaper.

I think you should react to "The Plague" next. That's in the second series of Father Ted. In that episode, Bishop Brennan comes to the parochial house to inspect the security arrangements after Father Jack is found sleepwalking naked, and Ted and Dougal have to conceal the presence of several rabbits in the parochial house from the bishop.
Yep first time I ever saw or even heard of Graham Norton was in Father Ted, I must admit he is very funny in this series.

In the us “marathons” were a completely different bar. A long, stringy thing made of just chocolate and caramel. I wouldn’t say “no” to one right now.
@@cpmenninga We had something called a Curly Wurly which was the same content but in a lattice shape. I liked them but they tended to shed the chocolate a lot while you were eating them.

Have you ever checked out Blackadder? Personally I never really got into season 1, but seasons 2-4 are brilliant! You should totally do a reaction series for them.

Oh season 1 was a mess, 2 was much improved and a lot less tacky.
Series One was the best Blackadder by far for me, although I know that this opinion goes against the majority view. To my mind, it was far more original, fresher, funnier, darker and grander. The others were great as well, but Ben Elton's influence turned it into more of a conventional sitcom with historical costumes and references. By "Blackadder Goes Forth" the irritating "since..." gags and set pieces had the whip hand.
That actor that played Tom is Pat Shortt he's a great actor. And for many year's he did start in many movie's and TV show's that where done by the RTÉ, Irish Film Board, Channel 4 and Film 4. And I say he should be acting in Movie's and TV Show's for the BBC, ITV, Fox, Touchstone, Universal, WB, Disney, Sony and Columbine by now. Since it should be his big break. Like the actor that played Mad Eye Moody in Harry Potter. And I say it's about time Pat Shortt did win a Golden Globe Award or a Oscar by now to.

One things that bugs me is , if there on holiday why haven't they changed out of their priests uniforms?
Twenty five episodes is very long by our standards. For us a normal series is 6 half hour episodes, not 22 three-quarters of an hour episodes. Fawlty Towers and The Young Ones both ran for "only" two series of six episodes each.

This is the theatre of the absurd, who of you out there have heard of this idea? Its beauty is in its ability to confront us at our point of absolute self belief and challenge us to take our beliefs to the absolute end, ourselves.
British sitcoms are very different from American sitcoms. For one thing, British sitcoms are actually funny.
But British humor in general tends towards very dry humor and situations that are completely absurd; they often don't even TRY to present a scenario that could happen in reality (as weird a life as the character's in Friends live, it's at least conceivable that every event in that show could actually happen in real life. Father Ted, on the other hand, is totally departed from reality and sanity).
Father Ted and Black Adder are two of our best.
You should do a reaction to Murder in Successville , either the Jamie Laing or Richard Osmand episode. It's pretty unique!
If you do a reaction video of Father ted make sure before you watch the episode Mainland to do a few reaction videos to the 90s bbc comedy series one foot in the grave it will make a hell of a lot more sense if you do.
