- The staff is one of the most common weapons in fighting games. It goes my many other names too, like Bo, Pole, stick, etc. Besides having lots of names, it’s versatile with how you fight with it. It’s great for ranged attacks, speed, strength, and much more. So, for this video, we want to find the most interesting users of this weapon. It could even just be staff-like if their fighting style suits the staff fighting style. My mom joins for this one, too.

As a Staff wielding user. I appreciate for included. I do practically train in real life and it is my signature weapon besides my double sticks(Filipino Arnis).

As a major fan of Soul Calibur, I am extremely happy that Kilik not only MADE this list, but TOPPED it. Popular demand, it would seem, as he's usually one of the first people to come to mind when you think "people who beat you up with a stick in fighting games"

I was getting so scared when I didn't see Killik, until you mentioned the other SC Staff fighters in the Honorable mentions, and put him at Number 1.
His skill set isn't the flashiest, but he is the most...grounded in reality.
Nah, nah... His opponents tend to be the most grounded after fighting his skill. He canonically put everyone in the dirt that he's fought aside from Maxi (who he befriended) and Astorath (who Maxi eventually took out in his story).
Also, not the flashiest? Have you seen Kilik's throws? He pole dances to kick you in the face while your arms are restrained behind your back. He spreads your legs and nut-checks you or lift you over his head with the leverage onto your own head behind him. He runs off your back, twirls in mid air and aims the tip of his bow directly for the lowest part of your spine to paralyze you with accuracy akin to an aim-bot. He'll hit you in the face to stagger you, twirl it around his neck to hit you again hard enough to catch you airborne and then smack you in the back to make sure gravity doesn't fuck up it's job by doing it to take less time.
Not to mention he breakdances in battle in every iteration of Soul Calibur he's in. He twirls his staff like a baton both forwards and backwards, increasing in speed and damage with after-glow effects. He pole-vaults with several kicking techniques... Half his move-set is the epitome of flashy. Wouldn't say it's grounded in reality as half of the attacks he does simply can't be replicated in an effective or quick manner.
But that aside, I wasn't scared... I was just gonna hit the dislike if Kilik wasn't in the top 3 spots, because I couldn't think of anyone better than him for the top of the list. I might be biased since I've been a Kilik main since Soul Calibur on Dreamcast, but meh. I was confident enough to not feel ready to take my like on the video away. Lol.

@@JeiJohnson some of his moves are flashy, but all he does, comparatively, is use his bo-staff.... It's not like the person who has a staff that breaks into parts, or telekinetically controls it.
@@Kuronosa True, but what about Rolento who uses his baton like a baton? Or Okina, who just uses his fishing pole as if it was a standard stick? Or Donatello who just uses the bo-staff normally, aside from the one-handed twirl which is almost exclusive to that game and not any other iteration?
Gambit, Nicotine and Venom could so be grounded in reality when it comes strictly to their pole-fighting abilities. Their other non-pole abilities are grounded in some kind of kinetic or spiritual energy - but that's limited to cards (Gambit), talisman (Nicotine) and the cue balls (Venom), not their staff skills. Nicotine's entire kit would be grounded in folklore with some kinda hidden truth behind it lost in reality since he's a wandering Buddhist priest/monk.
Just saying, there are about half the roster that fits the "realism" category when it comes to stick-fighting.
Having a Staff Wielding Character in a Video Game (especially a Fighting Game) is a Great Tribute to the *Monkey King* (Sun Wukong) from the "Journey to the West" Story,
Which is how I'll be Hype for the upcoming "Black Myth Wukong" Game if it gets a Release Date.

It’s always a pleasure to hear your mother again. :) I have to agree with Kilik being no. 1 just due to how significant his staff plays a role in his story, rather than just being a weapon of choice for him. I’m glad Billy and Jade made the list though!
Nicotine caffeine got his name thanks to a senior imployer at SNK who was adiccted at the time,so in some ways its like a homage.
This list would not have been complete without Killik the whole time I was waiting for him to be mentioned but I’m delighted that he’s at the top where he belongs
He’s always been my favorite character to play as in the Soul Caliber series bc I love his fighting style and have had a crush on him ever since I played the heck out of Soul Caliber 2 back in 2002 while my brother mostly favored Nightmare and Siegfried
I think I like Billy Kane the most. He is a great underling to Geese since he is indepted to him, and he has cool staff moves!
Faust and seong mina deserves honorable mentions because they are important staff wielders in fighting games too

Athena in Saint Seiya: Brave Soldiers not only is the only staff user in the game, but is one of the few armed characters in the game.
I love the list but I feel as though Billy should've been #2 since, as you said, he's able to attack with it so fast it looks like the cane split into a million pieces. I just feel like using pure skill is more impressive than having a cool tool to do attacks for you. I still loved your list though and I definitely agree with kilik being #1.

I actually am training to use tom boas in real life, witch is basically a boa cut in half and it got me thinking. If you haven't already done it, best fighting characters that duel weird weapons
I once had an idea for a fighting game with odd/unorthodox weapons. Like a pirate who weilds an anchor like a chain sickle, a viking using a stein like a hammer, a cowboy who uses their hair like a lasso/whip... stuff like that.
OH WOW I've actually played that TMNT game! I remember a friend letting me borrow it while he borrowed one of my games . . . . I gave his game back I never got mine back.
Nicotine/caffeine reminds me of the spy dakuan from ninja scroll. He is almost identical, so I assume that's where the inspiration came from. He even carries a staff like nicotine/caffeine.

Whole time I was lookin for Kilik. Truly THE quintessential staff user in fighting games. Kilik is the man. Really great list all around though. I appreciate all the explanation about what makes the characters cool from the games that I haven't personally played. Keep up the great videos! 👍

For an interesting dark horse pick, I know they would never make the list, only being in one (tech2?) game but Hualin, a character from Soul Calibur 3 (technically one of the 3 shop keepers along with Valeria and Lynette) she actually had the most accurate recreation of Sun Wukong's staff as it extended and shape shifted. It was the create a style but I suspect it was never brought back because of the kinda ridic full screen/quick unblockables. But she's incredibly unique. Unless you do certain moves the staff is a miniature weapo, barely extending out of her palm. But yeah super cool/rare/interesting honorable mention from me! Alits.

Top ten sucubus in fighting games
I'm happy Kilik made number 1. I managed to beat his story mode in SC3, using nothing but the right analog stick for my attacks; after finding out I could literally control the staff myself, to an extent.
Great video and another possible weapon choice for a video you could do is top ten boomerang users.
Boomerangs would be so cool! I can only think of a few off the top of my head, but maybe that could be a mixed media list to expand the options

Considering I've had to carry a blind cane since I was a kid, I am partial to this list. Fun fact, blind fighting is all about grappling. Not Zangief-style power-grappling (although some of us are physical enough to pull it off) but rather judo-based. The idea is get a hand on them and keep real close so they can't punch you as effectively.

Since updating old videos takes as much time to make as a new video, I only plan to do that for videos where I have a lot of new stuff to say on the topic since it would take up an upload spot, like when I remade my Fighting Game Protagonists list in 2018. Still, there are old videos I do want to revisit, so there are a few I plan on doing that with
