- How have I never seen this!? Wow what a disturbing concept man! I definitely wouldn’t be able to survive The Hunger Games. Katniss is the best older sibling you could ask for. She is definitely going to start a revolution!

media literacy is clearly a dying skill lol like the quote the describes rues appearance is just katniss realizing how similar rue looks to prim in stature and the only few differences being her skin, hair, and eyes all of which are described as various shades of dark browns veryyyyy blatantly, like its almost impossible to miss unless youre really just that out of it

I think like 80% of people genuinely either didn’t read the book and assumed Rue was white in the books, or they knew she was black but were ✨bigoted✨ little snowflakes so they straight up lied about it for outrage. Most people who were into the books back then were pretty fanatical (not necessarily in a bad way) and it would have been near impossible to find an actual fan of the books who didn’t know she was black, or at least had the common sense to skim the pages to Rue's intro to double check. So either way I think it’s less to do with literacy and much more to do with pure bigotry or ignorance of the book's content.
Seriously? I did not know this! I missed the "controversy." I read the books way before I watched the movies and watched the movies long after they came out. So I missed the stupid drama.
Reminds me of a very old pulp science fiction trilogy by Leigh Brackett, the "Skaith" stories. She did some major stuff including wrote The Big Sleep and wrote the first screenplay for Empire Strikes Back. But I always remember her for the Skaith books. The main character is clearly described as being dark skinned, dark haired, with blue eyes. She was deliberately mixing up stereotypes because the stories were based far in the future. Yet the cover art for the book showed a blonde white dude as the hero. Ignoring the actual description.
Context for the bread scene because they butchered it in the movie :
This happened after Katniss's dad died. Katniss and Peeta were 11 years old. Katniss's mom was in a depression and wasn't able to take care of her 2 daughters. Katniss was a few month from turning 12yo so she couln't take tessarae yet (when they get food in exchange for putting their name more time for the hunger games).
So, the scene occurs when Katniss (and her mother and Prim) were starving. Katniss was searching the trash from the merchant area to try to find food. She was near the bakery, Peeta's mom saw her and screamed at her and threatened her so she would leave. Katniss was desperate and she basically gave up and sat there in the rain awaiting death. Peeta saw her and he burned 2 loaves of bread on purpose. Just a little bit so they couldnt sell them. It was the expensive kind of bread, that even Peeta's family couln't afford. Peeta knew he would be punished for it. His mother hit him with something and screamed at him, calling him "stupid creature". Then Peeta tossed the bread to Katniss when he mother wasn't looking. He couldn't just go outside and give it to her, his mother would not have let him.
The bread saved Katniss's life as well as her mother's and Prim's. It gave them food for several days. The next day, Katniss saw Peeta at school. He had a black eye and a bruised cheek. She wanted to thank him but didn't know how. Instead, she looked down and picked up a dandelion. It reminded her what her father taught her about the woods and plants and hunting. It gave her the courage to go into the woods by herself. It gave her the hope that they would be able to survive, at least until she turned 12 and got the tesserae. To this day, she associates Peeta with hope. He is "the boy with the bread" or "the dandelion in the spring" to her.
When he is reaped, the first thing she is thinking is "no, not him" and "the odds are definitely not in my favor".
They really should’ve explained it better!!
Not only Haymitch has PTSD from his Games, but he also had to mentor 2 kids and watched them die each year for 24 years.
Not only that but he knows about what it can cost to embarrass the capital because of the way he won by taking advantage of a flaw in the system they killed his entire family and his girlfriend in a public execution
and his hunger game was the 50th quarter quell so it was him and 47 others tributes in the arena and he won.
The entire time Peeta was with the Careers (the kids from Districts 1 & 2), he would occasionally go off on his own and talk to himself about Katniss. This way the Capitol who were watching them knew that he hadn’t betrayed her, but was doing everything he could to keep her safe.

There's a quote from Katniss in first book which takes place after Rue's death and it has to be one of my favorites. "To hate the boy from District 1, who also appears so vulnerable in death, seems inadequate. It’s the Capitol I hate, for doing this to all of us." One thing that I think is super important to remember is the fact that these are all kids who were forced to give up their lives or take the lives of everyone else. It's easy to hate the Career Pack, especially because of their lack of remorse, but that doesn't make them any less of a victim than anyone else. You can see that exact realization hit Cato in his last few lines right before his death. The Careers were all groomed to believe that the most honorable thing they could do with their lives was winning the games, but nobody tells them that there's never a "winner" of the Hunger Games, there's only survivors.
I was hoping someone made this comment. As awful as the career pack seem, they were kids too… warped by this sick oppressive society.
Yes!! I remember when I watched this movie in the theater tons of people cheered when Marvel died and my first thought was how much like the Capitol that was.
None of these kids were ever really given a choice. Even the ones that volunteered were indocturinated from the time they were born that bringing pride to their district by winning was the most honorable thing they could do and also that other districts were their enemies. They didn't know any different. They weren't evil or sadistic, those that used them as pawns to fit their own agendas were the evil ones.
44:30 so what Peeta was doing was try to lead them away from Katniss. The careers only found her because the Gamemakers started the fire. Then after the tracker jackers attack, he came back to make her move, but Cato was going back to kill Katniss too so Peeta fought him, allowing her to get away. Cato cut Peeta's leg to the bone with his sword, that's how Peeta got injured. But they were both stung too and hallucinating so that's how Peeta managed to escape.
I think he was probably also trying to get her the bow.

the book will fill in alot of the blanks and clarify some things like how gale is not her boyfriend. Katniss doesn't allow herself to feel things like that in the world she lives in

You are correct that there was something of an uproar over the casting of a little black girl to play Rue.

also the three finger symbol is a commonly used gesture in 12 for funerals, it means goodbye to someone you love or care about
I wish they explained Haymitch better. He played in the 50th hunger games. They sent 4 kids from each district instead of 2. So he had double the numbers. He won by the force field around the arena causing an ax thrown at him to rebound and hit the other finalist. The capitol took this as a rebel move and killed everyone he loved, but let him live. Then, for 24 years at this point, he has mentored 2 kids from 12 and watched them die, as 12 has never had a winner. It's why he drinks, and he's so negative.
Also in the final fight with cato, peeta points to catos hand telling her to shoot there. No one notices it sadly. I believe in the book he marks an X rather than point.
I agree I wish I had learned this from Haymitch during the films. Thanks for this clear perspective. Twice the number of tributes is TOUGH. I can better understand his struggles with alcohol now
Peeta pointed to Katniss where to hit Kato. Peeta learned at the beginning how to play the game where it took Katniss to get to the end of the game to really understand how to play.
Yeah I definitely think Peeta was more suited for this than Katniss, at least until they got into the arena

Katniss father had just died from the mine explosion and it was winter so she couldn't for food.
44:00 ish: Rue is dark-skinned. Her skin is mentioned several times in the book. Same with Thresh her district partner. People just had an idea in their heads of Rue that was wrong and they were very obnoxious about it 🤔 i felt for Amandla who played Rue, absolutely perfect in my opinion ❤
bruh you are so observant! You were spot on with what you said about the bow. Nearly impossible to hit a shot your first time using a bow, you gotta adjust to it and its arrows weight and aerodynamics. So the fact that she was shooting perfect after only 1 barely-a-miss is astounding.

Peeta is amazing. He wasn’t jealous that she got a higher score than him, he was worried because he knew it painted a bigger target on her. Gale is not her boyfriend and he sucks.

Rue was black in the books; the outrage was from people who latched onto Katniss thinking about how similar she looked to Prim. From Google:

Also we all wish they’d increase the age range, but that’s the main point of it. To have a punishment so horrific that they’d never rebel again.
I appreciate that you got that Peeta is much better at the interview/performing aspect. A lot of people don't get that (I think because Jennifer Lawrence pops on screen). But it's a major plot point of the novels.
Yes, the arena is technically "indoors." There is a forcefield that keeps them in, which they can project the screen on. They can control weather and day and night. This movie didn't have a very high budget so it really is just shot in the woods. The second movie is better at depicting the sci-fi and technology aspects.
I see some other commenters mentioned she is Black in the books. It literally says she has "the same dark skin as" Thresh. (So really we should be mad she is so light skinned compared to him.) But Katniss often compares her to Prim in her head, so I guess some racist people assumed that meant she was blonde too--because skin collor is the most important thing and if she's Black then the author can't compare her to Prim *eyeroll*. It was a whole thing where the poor actress (Amandla Stenberg) got hate online.
Also! You asked about District 1 and 2. Each district has a different industry and the character of the district is greatly influenced by what they provide the Capitol. District 1 is "luxury goods" so you have a lot of craftspeople with specialized skills. District 2 provides the police force (and also some mining). Districts that need unskilled labor like coal mining (12), agriculture (District 11, referencing slavery and other movements like United Farm Workers), and District 8 (Textiles, industrial revolution, Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, etc) not only make less money but are treated harsher.
Districts 11, 8 and 4 (fishing) seem to be the most prone to rebellion if the other books are anything to go on.

The weird dogs that take out Thresh and Cato are much worse in the books- they’re “muttations,” and each one has the eyes of a fallen tribute. There’s a moment where Katniss sees Rue’s eyes staring back at her…gave me chills.

You are so right; I watch a lot of HP and Hunger Games reactors, but not many understand how much more traumatic the books are. Even Kato's long torturous death at the end was so gruesome. Thanks.
Honestly this moment and the jabberjays in the second are two of the most horrific book moments I've ever read.
I am loving your reaction to this series. I can't count how many different reactors I've seen, yet your the only one who's picked up why she missed her first shot with a Capital bow. And you immediately picked up why Haymitch would be a drunkard. For someone coming in completely blind, you're picking up on a lot of important beats and seeing the nuance many casual watchers miss. I think you're feel gratified reading the books!
Each tribute has a prep team of 3 people + a stylist. Peeta has his own prep team and stylist, Portia, but in the movie they only show Cinna. Cinna and Portia work together. Then, normally, each tribute has a mentor, but because Haymitch is the only victor still alive from District 12, he has to mentor both Peeta and Katniss. Now that they both won, there will be 3 mentors for the next Games from D12.
Haymitch's job is very difficult because he knows he can't save both so he basically has to choose one life to save. In this Games, he knows Peeta wants for Katniss to win, and he knows Katniss has what it takes to win. So he concentrates every sponsor money he gets on her, even though Peeta is a big reason they have sponsors in the first place.
U are WRONG about Peeta. Peeta join the group to protect Katniss. He knew they would be after her so he join them to keep and eye on them and manipulate their plans. He couldn't be too obvious that he is really on Katniss side. He uses his personality to convince them to wait her out; giving Katniss time to get out or develop a plan. When he tells her to run, he fights Kato so that she can escape. Kato hits Peeta in the leg with a sword, in the book.
Yeah I was definitely confused at that part but Peeta now has my respect!

Everyone seems to misunderstand that he's not a boyfriend he is her bestie and hunting partner they look out for each other he has romantic feelings for her she doesn't allow herself to have romantic feelings for anyone because she doesn't want to waste time on dating if she doesn't intend to get married and have kids and in her abject poverty she does not want to bring another child into that world to you know possibly starve to death or be put into the hunger games to die

The districts don't really have a choice about watching the Games. It's mandatory viewing. The books never say exactly what happens if they miss it, but given Panem, it is perhaps better imagined.
As to the setting, it's far future, after a series of environmental disasters and wars have more or less wiped out most of the human race. What's left is gathered in North America. It's not specified if it's all the population that was already there, or if the rest of the world was gathered in at some point, but one of the reasons they don't rush into war is that the population is so small that they don't want to risk it, and only 24 people a year is something the population can absorb. D12 is somewhere in Appalachia, the Capitol is somewhere in the Rockies. It's not stated in the books, but Collins said that D11 is in Georgia. They no longer have satellites or jets because of damage to the atmosphere. (It's no wonder that the movie didn't go into this stuff, but it is there in the books.)
The movies are very good, but they screwed up the scene with the bread, which was very important (I think they assumed all the viewers would be readers who'd know what they were referring to). Peeta and Katniss were eleven at the time, and Katniss was starving to death, but Peeta's mother wouldn't let her steal from the bakery's garbage. Peeta takes a beating from his mother by deliberately burning the bread, and she tries to force him to give it to the pigs. He sneaks it to Katniss by throwing it off to the side--two loaves--and those loaves save Katniss, Prim, and their mother long enough for her to figure things out. Katniss believes that she owes Peeta her life, which is why she's upset that they're both in the arena. But most people who didn't read the book assume that the tossing of the bread was contemptuous, rather than a selfless gesture. That tells me that the movie handled objectively wrong, since most of Katniss's behavior toward Peeta depends on her sense of debt to him.
Yeah I didn't understand at first how the Hunger Games worked I thought it was something that the public genuinely enjoyed comparable to Romans and the games they used to hold with the gladiators and such. In reality it is much closer to what happens in North Korea with their mandated propaganda videos.

would highly recommend reading/listening the books if you have the time because they really do tell an amazing antiwar story that explores trauma and what war does to the innocent people who never wanted anything to do with it, you also get it through the eyes of katniss so youre experiencing the world through the eyes of a traumatized teenager trying to find their way in a abusive post war-torn world
Everything Peet’s ever done was to protect Katniss, including joining the career pack. He wasn’t leading them towards her, he was leading them away from her. He was doing everything in his power to make sure they didn’t touch her . His goal was always to protect her, and the minute the rule change came into place it has been Katniss’s mission to protect him, as well. And it never changed since then, forever.
Peeta has almost always had REAL feelings for Katniss.

I've never heard anyone call this "fantasy" before. It was from a book series by Suzanne Collins published by Scholastic Books to teach middle school students about politics and war. It was a shock when it was optioned for a movie series to them.
Both actors for Peeta ànd Katniss are originally from Kentucky. Lenny Kravitz was a friend of Jennifer Lawrence's parents and it took her awhile to stop calling him Mr. Kravitz on set.
Like others have said, Rue was black in the book. And Katniss herself is described several times as having olive skin, and once dark olive skin. It's implied her father had Native American ancestry as well. So if anyone was miscast based on the book description, it was Jennifer Lawrence. 😂 (And also, Katniss was malnourished most of her life, so she was about the same size as the younger tributes.)
Oh no hun she's just wearing pink in this first scene and yeah I get it with the voice but Effie isn't evil she's just a product of the capital she grew up there and has been indoctrinated with the idea that the people in The district's deserve this and they should be proud to be the representative of their district and oh yeah it's just for a little while but you get to basically live in the luxury of the capital and be a celebrity but yeah she's just a little I don't want to say stupid but that's kind of the vibe I've always gotten for her well maybe not stupid more like ignorant I mean she's not Innocent but she just doesn't really understand because she's grown up in the capitol once she spend some time with katniss and Peeta she comes to care for them and really really begin to understand how horrible the games are that she was so excited about before

A few weeks late, but I don't think anyone else said: In the books, Peeta's leg doesn't fully heal. He ends up needing it amputated. So, for the rest of the series he kinda gets babied and is slower because of his missing leg. Despite them leaving this moment out, you can actually see him being a little clumsier and slower in the others.

so in the books peetas injury is actually shown to be WAY worse than it is in the movie, the cut goes down to his bone and he can barely move even with katniss’ help. its also crazy infected and at the point that katniss goes to get the supplies in the feast the infection is also poisoning his blood. It is so bad that even with the capitols help after the games peetas leg still ends up needing to get amputated in the books. he is so sick that he can barely do anything at all while they are in the caves so peeta is actually incredibly strong for making it long enough for katniss to both find him and then again living long enough for her to even get the medicine at all.
i HIGHLY recommend for anyone who is interested in or liked the movies to read the books even if you arent a big reader, they are really incredible and provide a lot of important details that you just dont get in the movies

This is my favourite movie series and have watched them many times. I saw the first movie at the cinema not knowing about the books, then I read all the books before the 2nd movie, well worth the read, but they did do a good job with these movies.
Rue was black in the book the people complaining that she was black in the movie were stupid
I would recommend the books. They did a good job in my opinion translating for the screen but there are things in the book to provide depth to the characters. One thing i would definitely recommend is to read the prequel book before watching that movie. That movie is different, they leave A LOT out so it will make more sense to have the content of book while doing your reaction. The book is heavily around Snow's perspective so they couldn't translate that as well for the films.

They generally work in the coal mines after they age out of the Hunger Games. And I think it's just the men. The women marry and have children -- something Katniss doesn't plan to do.
56:00 Peeta didn’t realize Katniss left because in the book she gave him sleep syrup she got from Haymitch because he didn’t want her to go just to help him so she knocked him out with the syrup for like a full 24 hours… the movie just makes it look like he’s dumb or something🤦🏻♀️

They don't show in the movie, but Peeta was good at hand to hand combat, as well as using knifes and really strong. He is a master strategist and manipulator/charming. He is a baker and a "painter" too.😊
The prodruction seemed to want to downplay him to make Katness seem "better", or "stronger" in a way. It is sad, because they both have their own strengths.

Your comparison to North Korea is spot on. Panem is very much like North Korea. The citizens have no free will. They aren't allowed to move freely. They work to provide for the Capitol. The Capitol uses food and the the threat of starvation to keep the districts in line. The only information allowed is the propaganda the Capitol dispenses. Crimes often bring brutal punishment for not only yourself but also your family. The comparisons are many, I think it is very likely Suzanne Collins (the author) drew inspiration from North Korea when creating this fictional world.
Also in the beginning you are quick to point out that the ages of 12-18 are the perfect ages for indoctrination then seem to forget that when watching the career tributes. Those kids have been taught their entire lives that their purpose, the most honorable thing they can do, is to fight in the hunger games and bring pride and welfare to their district. They are told again and again the other districts are their enemy. None of these kids ever really had a choice. The truly evil one here is not them but rather the one using them.
The world-building in the movies is EXCELLENT. Katniss is incredibly smart and very clear about all the levels of oppression in their everyday life down to the little things. The movies toned that down but her inner dialogue is filled with observations and things she learns along the way that pay off to help her win the games. Panam is much darker in the books and they explain really well why some people buy into the system, why some are just trying to survive and can't oppose it, why some do oppose it. etc. We see a completely dystopian society only to see parallels with our own. I wouldn't be surprised if most of the kids on campuses today grew up reading the Hunger Games trilogy.
Rue is quite clearly described in the book as Black lol Raaacist White fans just couldn't understand how a little innocent 12 year old Black girl could remind Katniss of her 12 year old little innocent White sister. Katniss herself and Gale are thought to be of a mixed Appalachian ethnic group. The whole series is a commentary on US politics and history. The lower class looks like Gale and Katniss and her dad. The middle and upper class look like Prim and her mom and Peeta. Rue's district is mostly Black and they are on an orchard (plantation basically). The author did a great job and made it so digestible for a wider audience.
The thing is even the career tributes are victims. They have been raised to believe in the whole process and train to become winners. Cato's realisation at the end is heartbreaking. He's still a kid and has been lied to by all the adults he trusted and he was raised to be slaughtered. The author wanted to make parallels between war and the entertainment industry. We cheer when the careers are killed, but we forget they are still children.
funny you say that district 12 looks like parts of west Virginia. That’s where district 12 is supposed to be in the hunger games universe!!

BUT i don’t want to answer any of your questions that you’ll get from the books i’m so stoked that you’re going to read them. these movies are actually some of the best book to movie adaptations out there with the next one, catching fire, probably THE best adaptation i’ve ever seen
In a minor defense of Cato (and the other careers): They have been raised from birth to one day volunteer and win for their district. They have had fighting and media training, and know how to play the crowds/sponsors. It is theorized that the reason the careers laugh about killing people and are so vocal about killing is because they know the camera are rolling and sponsors are watching. A rich person may be more inclined to sponsor a tribute that looks like a cold-blooded killer. But we see during Cato's final moments that he is also just a kid, and he's realized he's failed to do the one thing he has always been expected to do. What you have to understand about Cato and the Careers is that they were raised to be ruthless killers. They really are products of their environment, and in that way, they were victims of the Capitol too. They had no chance to become anything other than what they were, killers with no empathy. That's why Cato says "I'm dead anyways. . . I always was." I certainly don't feel as bad for him as I do, say, Rue, who was sweet and entirely innocent. But I still do feel bad for Cato to a degree. He sucked, but he wasn't given a chance to not suck.
So Panem (the country they live in) was absolutely once the U.S. District 12 is in Appalachia.
I would love to hear your perspective on book vs movie. Very few reactors I have seen watch the films have also read the books. The films definitely get the main plot and spirit of the story but the books are definitely more brutal.

Rues actually black in the book as well. District 11 is a black District, so most if not all the people we know from 11 are black.
Rue asking if Katniss blew up the food also makes sense, because if Katniss didn't, Rue would've died for nothing
As much as I love these movies, this one was the weakest for me. District 12 and the Capital were how I pictured them, but the Training Center and Area not so much. I imagined the training center looking like a dated school gym with wood-paneled floors, and I thought the Arena would be a bit more dreary, too. I thought the weapons would be more makeshift and rustic as well. I wish Marvel and Clove died the ways they did in the books, too. I was totally imagining Lady Gaga as Effie, too, lol
Why would u picture a dilapidated school gym? They're in the Capitol so u know it's gonna be State of the Art. They r given the best of the best because almost all of them r gonna die in a couple of weeks.

You really should read the books, they're amazing, some of my favorites. The films are pretty faithful as adaptations go, but the books provide more backstory and history of Panem, and go way deeper into the politics which is one of my favorite things about the series. The films do a decent job consolidating the ideas in the books, but but the books have so much more depth and detail that the films don't, as you'd expect. Theyre easy reads too, only like 300-400 pages tops.
But the most memorable aspect of the books to me is that my entire time reading them was accompanied by an uneasy feeling that the world this story takes place in is not at all unlike our own, and our future could be similar. Not exactly the same obviously, some of the ideas are embellished or hyperbolic for the entertainment factor, but the overall theme of an oppressive tyrannical government and obscene classism is, as you alluded, already something that people in our world live through. So it's equally fascinating and disconcerting how grounded in reality they are.
Came here to say something I thought about while watching the reaction and typed up this big ol' thing only to realize at the end that it was all one big spoiler and delete it all...sigh

This is a hell of a franchise did and we don't exactly know how far in the future it is I have read the books and watched the movies multiple times well maybe not the prequel because I I I I I think I'm only read that once that I have seen it the movie twice basically it's somewhere in The fairly distant future because the place where Panama is located is the United States but it's much smaller because you know the sea levels have risen so a lot of states with salt water beaches are basically underwater and it's broken up not into skates split into districts now which can are composed of multiple States the capital is in the Rocky mountains it's like at least two or three hundred years in the future but the district seem like they're about a hundred or two hundred years in the past because of how poor they are and it's a really good series but it's not one of those to put you in a good mood its dystopian I don't know if you finish the Harry Potter series I feel like you have since you're starting this one but you find out at the end of that series in the books you know when Harry and Hermione visit his parents Graves you get to see the date that they died we already knew it was Halloween but we didn't know the year until the end of the series daylight in Halloween of 81 which was the year I was born they were 20 when they had Harry 21 when they died side note there is a theory on the fact that the book series came out starting from the time the book story ended that they were written for the wizarding world as history books and then for the Muggle world as fantasy

New to you! Got my sub... This is compared with Harry Potter for the quality of writing alone... The idea if a 'young reader' turned movie (while there are obviously differences, the movies a decent job mirroring the books) and with a lot of adult concepts. Definately not fantasy and all dystopian - both series touch on standing up for what's right
this is reaction content done well, whenever I go to watch reactions to the hunger games 90% of it is on their face and them talking and almost none of the movie is shown and it just sucks
Formidable years are 2-5 years old. It's much younger than people think. Also, I would suggest trying not to elaborate your points too much -- we get it the first time most often. Talking over the dialogue will not help you follow along -- you'll miss a lot.
Please read the books after each movie ..
