Freud's Influence on Video Games (Silent Hill 2, Xenogears, Control, More...)

  • Freud is somebody that our society takes for granted. Most people do not recognize how much he has influenced our culture. Today, I show the numerous video games that he has influenced, many of which happen to be some of the greatest games ever made. While that is not entirely due to Freud, he played a significant role.

    Pyramid Head as Superego/Shadow -
This is the problem with psychoanalytic concepts, particularly with Freudian ones: they describe only one part of a greater truth... and even then, what that truth is remains debatable. For myself, I'd say the greater truth is Jungian: that the Freudian id is one part of a person's unconscious. Pyramid Head shares the same multiplicity of purpose that the personal unconscious does. Though he takes the form of the "Id" part of the unconscious, his function isn't simply to be libidinous force of nature. He seems to have a purpose.
Is he the superego? I suppose it depends on whichever way you look at it. Like Heather said, and Vincent alluded to in Silent Hill 3, God can be the devil or vice-versa. You would think that the superego would take the form of an angel, like I explained in the video. But what does an angel actually look like? Another character from Silent Hill that Pyramid Head is related to, Valtiel, is described as an angel. He looks decrepit like Pyramid Head too.
Is he the shadow? Is he actually trying to help James? Again, it's hard to say for certain. He seems to be helping James towards his goal as much as he is trying to kill him. This is the problem with integrating unconscious contents into consciousness. Sometimes it's the most important thing that needs to be done, and sometimes it will kill you.
Trying to be objective about something as subjective as the unconscious mind, or its personifications (like Pyramid Head) is impossible. Given the evidence, I would say that Pyramid Head's aesthetic and behavior is definitely id-like, but will have the side-effect of a superego/shadow... in that it will shock those who witness Pyramid Head's behavior towards the good.
That's the best I can do for now.

It happens to me years ago, read almost Freud and Jung papers and books, all their assimilate works like archetypes, folk tale, and stuff (even the obscure ones like Eliphas Levi, Horoscope, Tarot and shit like that), then beginning to compare everything you comprehend or understand with psychoanalysis approach. Man, what a fun ride.

In the works of Freud, the unconscious is not a place but a quality. So you can't say the ID is part of the unconscious. You can say a wish is unconscious, that means you have a wish (drive, trieb) but you're not aware of it. You wish to kill but you don't know you wish to kill, so you write crime novels, or play violent games, or work as a butcher, or become a cop or a soldier, or turn suicidal, or a sadist. You do any of these without knowing the origin of it, which is the unconscious drive.
Freudian symbolism implies a figure can be reservoir of many meanings. So Pyramid Head symbolizes not only one thing, but many things. PH is not the superego or de id, PH is a symbols that sometimes represents the superego (guidance, guilt and punishment), and sometimes represents the id (James's sexual drives).

Well the superego and id are connected to put pressure over the ego. The demonic superego intends to sit in the throne of self in order to sacrifice the individual. Give in to the death impulse and direct life back towards the primordial inorganic state. Both id and superego tend to control us, repress us and ultimately makes us ill to a point in certain cases to psychosis. Makes sense!

Freud got tons of things right, he’s just read poorly by most, was thrown under the bus by psychology, and it took other styles of science a long time to catch up where they could to provide a more objective accounting for what Freud described. Neuroscience has shown many of his ideas to be well ahead of their time, and as much as the therapy profession doesn’t like to publicize it, even many of his more uncomfortable ideas are unignorable in practice, like ideas on transference and the internal conflicts now referred to as psychodynamics.

Perhaps bold to request since I am not a patreon supporter, but I would like to see in the future your analysis or take on the 2016 anime "Flip Flappers".
Its usage and utilization of Freudian and Jungian psychology in the worldsetting, characterizations through archetypes and concept through "mahou shojo" is very intriguing in addressing coming-of-age & female psychology (quite literal in one episode of the animus (Pure Breaker)).
It's a big ask, and although not rewarding to sit through halfway the series (it picks up around episode 7 in momentum), I think it pays off more on repeat viewing with a lens atuned to whats below the glitzy surface text.
I'd wish it'd had 24 episodes to fully expand on the ideas, but for a 12 episode run, I don't regret it at all existing.

Freud was so wrong about the Oedipus Complex that he didn't even name it right. Oedipus did not lust after his mother or desire his father's death. He did not know his parents at all, and it was coincidence (or the will of the gods I guess) that he crossed paths and got involved with them. The worst thing he knowingly did was have a cougar fetish. Well, that or being guilty of the world's first documented case of murderous road rage.
Freud's own incestuous fantasies were so strong that he projected them onto a myth that doesn't support them. Oedipus Rex is really about the sins of the father, and the capriciousness of life (which the Greeks attributed to their gods).
Id, ego, and superego make a decent framework for the *explanation* of human behaviors, which is why they make for good narratives. But they really aren't useful to modern psychological treatments, which suggest they are not true in any meaningful way. It's just like how really good fantasy worlds can be described in terms of the four elements (Avatar's earth, wind, fire, and flame.) Narratively they are elegant and convincing. But that doesn't make them true!
Freud founded psychotherapy, and popularized psychology. His lasting impact was to create interest in psychology, and that was a good thing. But his specific ideas, as he specifically articulated them, are no longer credible in psychological treatments. That's a good thing too, because it means the science of psychology continues to be advanced. Just stop representing his specific theories as credible. Anything he developed that still holds relevance has been significantly modified, and the people who did that advancement deserve as much if not more credit than he does.

There is a theory or rather an hypothesis (By both reinstall paul and Max, when they played Silent Hill 2 together on a stream) that women are attracted to pyramid head as some women are attracted to the character of 50 shades of grey. It seems the idea of being dominated/controlled is of sexual appeal to some women, also known as the "bad boy".
Now what is not an hypothesis and is being seeing on academic papers is that usually, women that are still young (like teenagers and young adults) but mostly because of lack of maturation have this love lets say, for this kind of characters.
Usually, a mature women wants an integrated man, that person who have the power or the attitude or the character of being distant or even harmful, but decides to "sheathe" that part (integration of the shadow), and also being a father who is constantly being a provider of the house and at the same time attends their own children. So pretty much a well rounded human being, integrating all of what he is.
I'm not exactly sure what is it that we want in a woman though, I have my specificities, usually when a man is young you just want to bang whatever you see, then whoever notices you, but then we mature more into searching for a woman who is both strong and motherly.
Trivia, this is the sexual fantasy for the majority of women that took some internet questionnaire, maybe you can google it (not in any particular order):
      a) Werewolf.
      b) Vampire Aristocrat.
      c) Surgeon.

I knew women who broke all the stereotypes (wanted to being with someone younger, wanted to be with guys with less muscle, or chubby, wanted to dominate or be dominated, etc, I have been completely advanced too, which breaks that stereotype of the guy having to advance).
I guess the take is, be who you are so that when you meet that someone someone you can say that at least you have a lot of thing in common (another paper that suggests that people that are super different in tastes but also in personality tend to dissolve fast), but then again... what are we? are we tied to some sort of biological tyranny (which I see as biological determinism, among other things) or we have a spark of freedom? some sort of free will? I guess this is like The matrix 2, the problem is choice, but then again... "this will be the sixth time we have destroyed it, and we have become exceedingly efficient at it."

I found analysis helped to a point but prevented processing early developmental trauma. Gestalt type therapy helped me to feel present and eventually feel safe to feel my emotions frim childhoid memories, including punushment for my autism. One pupil of his was Victor Frankel, who influenced my view of mankind's motive for life, which he believed is to have meaning in life rather than a sexual motive as Freud said, or power, as Adler proposed.

I would say Freud's tying of so many things back to sex is highly correct when it comes to humans. Look at our society right now, Almost every major social issue that is being fought over is about sex. The after effects of sex, how to have as much as you can with no consequences, what you call your role in it, how to ridicule someone who doesn't, how to use it to sell products (*always* a corporate go to).

Even major human rights movement have sexual component to them, LGBT rights is obvious, but even race rights started with mixed marriage, and I bet initial drive to stop institutionalized racism and other discrimination was pushed through because no matter how much racism you are taught from childhood, finding the people you were taught to hate, hot, overwrites the preconceptions.

for a game that uses the concepts talked about in this video I'd like to recommend Lobotomy corp and library of ruina for using these things as central parts of the games.
the monsters in the games referred as Abnormalities are basically Representations of things found commonly within the Ids people within society as these Abnormalities are pulled directly out of the collective consciousness, by working on and managing(or beating in Library of ruina's case) these Abnormalities you can extract/use Powerful equipment called E.G.O, basically putting a gameplay representation of properly incorporating ones Id you literally become stronger for it(one could also relate this to taking on a Jungian Archetype aswell)
and in Library of ruina there's a similar yet somewhat different thing where a person can develop they're own E.G.O equipment from themselves this only happens when someone is put through a unimaginable amount of emotional distress that reveals to themselves their own flaws/Id and manages to keep themselves together and find reinforced purpose within themselves, however if through this emotional distress if they snap and completely given into their baser desire they would be become distortion and monster very liken to a Abnormality which is a physical manifestation of their Id lashing out and attending to fulfill whatever desire the person had through often supernatural and violent means.

I strongly recomend you to read "The unconcious as infinite systems" from Ignacio Matte Blanco, a chilean psyconalyst. He took freudian concept, modified some, criticized others, and gave us what I personally consider as a very interesting and creative rielaboration of Freud. (Actually many of his concept can be applied to other psychological theories, like Jungian idea of "union of opposite").
About videogames, am I the only one who thinks that the Dark Soul of Man in the "Dark Souls" franchise kinda look like a fantasy version of the unconcious? Think about it: in this games human has two souls, one is bright, rational, concious, in control of the body, the other is "dark" (duh), irrational, instinctual, passional, primordial, much more powerful. And it is kept repressed.
There would be also a very long conversation about how time works for the two souls, and how it could be connected to a freudian concept, but the discussion would become too long.
