But more relevantly, the French version of this making is slightly longer, containing a few parts that were removed from the English version. Among them, there are parts of the interviews where the developer mention other game franchises, namely Final Fantasy and Resident Evil: - When Mr.Sato explains that he purposely created imperfections on Maria's face and why he did that, he originally explains that the characters of Final Fantasy are too perfect, and that he thinks he created something more realistic. - When Akira Yamaoka talks about the unique sound effects he wanted to create for SH2, the French version contains this additional line from him: "I think the sounds of Resident Evil are kinda conventional. I would almost say that our ears are used to it." That's why he explains how he wanted to create something more unique. - Also, the French subs have a funny moment in the parts with Akira Yamaoka. After translating what he says, at some point, the subtitles add this: "Here, Akira is only finishing his sentence. But since it's in Japanese, it is very long... So we're keeping you busy in the meantime. Thank you for your comprehension." 27:48 This singular idea is the biggest thing missing in the SH2 remake. Aside from different hair and clothes, I have no sense whatsoever that Mary and Maria aren't just the same person. Her vocal performance is monotonous when she's supposed to be seductive, and then weirdly emotional and pitiful when she's supposed to be cold and hurtful. Just a complete miss

The happiest day of my life would be when the whole team of Silent gets together again to create a traditional SH game. It has to follow the first three games. I have had some hope when Kojima announced Silent Hills. Maybe he wouldn't capture the true spirit of original SH games, but he would create a perfect story hat fits the universe of sh... Too sad the greediness of Konami's CEO cancelled the game. But one maybe day. Maybe...
+Mobtaker SA What do you mean the "whole" team "again?" Team Silent were never all together because some came later while others were absent throughout making the games. And considering their last game (SH4), it's clear they want to go in a different direction and fans were prissy about it. It's best to appreciate what they gave and move on 'cause even Silent Hills proved different doesn't always equal bad.
There's a leak that says we're getting two new games probably around the time the next gen consoles launch. So we may see something at E3 this year. Apparently the guy is a very reliable leaker and has been johnny on the spot. He leaked games in the Resident Evil series and was right every time. With there being another rumor a little over a month ago regarding the future of Silent Hill, it seems like it just might happen. That's what I'm hoping for, but for now we wait.
@@andrewhare5482 I'm just curious if whatever team Konami assigns to make the game will truly understand what Silent Hill is about. I'm not quite sure that I understand it myself, but I do know that it's less gameplay related and more story/atmosphere/symbolism related. I'm happy to get anything rather than nothing, but we'll just have to wait and see.
The amount of care and intelligence that went into creating this masterpiece of a game is unheard off nowadays. Story, characters, atmosphere and music are second to none and trumps every game artistically speaking in my opinion. Brilliant upload for a brilliant game. Thanks!!
I don't know why everyone only talks about P.T and Kojima, these guys were the ones who made Silent Hill famous. I wish they reunite again for christ sake.
An absolute masterpiece, unmatched to this day. They poured so much love into this game and the results speak for themselves. I feel like every young gamer needs to play this game to understand what a great game should be.
Still, so many years later, this game blows my mind. Pure artists creating pure art. You can hear it in the way they talk, they are passionate about the feeling they want you to feel. The key point that every non Team Silent, Silent Hill developer onwards does not inhabit.
BRILLIANT. One of the most influential games of the early 2000s. Played it a lot, and now seeing this video in 2017 made me think about the genius of that game and its creators.
It's so amazing that these designers were sooo young by the time they created such an incredible masterpiece that had so much careful thought put into it!! most look to be in their early 20s. Dang, Konami was such a different place back them. And to think all that amazing talent was put to work into mobile games a few years later is so heartbreaking. I wonder what they are working with nowadays.
I'm about to finish the remake. my overall opinion is that it's an excellent horror game, and a decent attempt at a remake, but the original remains far superior.
The reason why Silent Hill 2 it became a classic is because eventually people began to see how unique, eerie, melancholic and authentic the game's atmosphere it really is, and took the time to enjoy its deeply thoughtful narrative and symbolism. To this day it’s by far one of, if not the most mature examination of grief, sexual trauma, suicide, and morality all combined. It’s an intelligent game that does not hold anyone’s hand and comes at the player with utmost confidence in itself. It’s fantastic stuff. The rest of the original 4 are great in their own right and have their own well written stories, but they don’t hold the same emotional weight to them. I think SH2’s maturity by comparison is something that a lot of people are drawn to. ☯️
Silent Hill 2 will always have a special place in my heart - was a gaming experience I'll never forget and even today - like 15+ years later I still think about it. I hope one day silent hill comes back - revamped or reimagined for current gen platforms 🙌
I realize you probs won't see this but thank you so much for uploading these! you always provide us with so much Silent Hill information and I'm genuinely so thankful for what you do for the SH community
This making of gets more and more impressive with every console generation. As pretty as graphics are looking now, Silent Hill still holds up so well for simple design choices, like using manual modeling for characters' facial expressions as opposed to motion capture. Only just this year did Masahiro Ito even reveal that Pyramid Head's great knife was intended to be one half of a pair of giant scissors, and that the one James finds was originally supposed to be a different model entirely. Silent Hill 2 really is a lasting work of true genius, yet not because of one single entity. Everyone onboard worked so harmoniously to create a masterpiece.
You can't just say that without explaining why. Akira Yamaoka is an incredible composer for these games. The ambient is very relaxing and deep. Gameplay-wise the old Resident Evil games are far superior.
***** The story? well, not all Silent Hill games are that great. In the third game you just wake up all the time. The Room was really cool but generally there's not enough guns for my taste. The games are more psychotic than scary! The Project Zero/Fatal Frame games are SCARY!
I wanted to come back here and say thank you to everyone on Team Silent that worked on this masterpiece. Almost 25 years in the making, having finished the remake, it was like a love letter to long time fans and honored Team Silent's vision, if not expanded on it where some aspects of the remake have made things better. Its a really good time to be alive and see history in the making with a retelling of the masterpiece that is Silent Hill 2. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. My life has been changed yet again.
I grew up with Resident Evil games, first Silent Hill i played was Homecoming in 2008, but damn, i have to admit it. Silent Hill 2 is the greatest horror game ever made.Way better than RE 1,2 and 3, which are the most loved ones. My God, i wish RE and Silent Hill franchises never ends. Best franchises ever made alongside GTA. Pleaseee make Silent Hills PT happen!!!!!!!
Four years after this video was made, the master copy of Silent Hill 2, and all of its assets, were accidentally thrown away after a wild night of binge drinking, stuffed crust pizzas, Rumble Roses tournaments, and fornication with felines at the KCET offices. RIP Silent Hill 2. You were too beautiful for this world.
***** They need a company willing to invest in them that's also willing to allow them 100% freedom in creating the product without any focus at all on making a 'typical popular' game for the idiots who need to be told where to go next.
Well Masahiro Ito is a serious artist with work in galleries and has plenty of illustration work under his belt. From what I can see, he's doing exactly what he wants to be doing, I'm sure he's fine. I'm pretty sure Yamaoko is doing well too.
This ooozes early 2000s Y2K VHS documentary vibe to me. The calming british narrator. The calm drum and bass music. The soft rock. The game OST music. The genuine questions and answers and total passion from the devs. Everything about this documentary is great. Are there any more like it?
Such a pity that this making of wasn't a little bit more detailed.. This team has given life to a wonderful piece of heaven. An actual artistic achievement. This game, this team, their job... A singular chance in a gamer's and a man's lifetime. Thank you.
Damn god, I miss Team Silent so much the effort they put in to their work is kinda unmatched and i'm pretty sad about that "Horror" Games go the Action way and arent even disturbing anymore Yes i know Amnesia and i see Evil Within but for gods sake they arent compareable to Silent Hill 1-3 its just like that a enemy spots you and you got to run but in the end there's no Impact on a storyline Cheers to Team Silent for such Masterpieces
I remember when i first saw silent hill 2 in the shop I knew it was gonna be a great game by the amount of work they put into making the case look beautiful the way it folds out with art of the characters and parts of Mary's letter on it
I love everything about Silent Hill 2, the entire melancholy of the story, the isolated environments, the characters, the music, the sound effects... It is a masterpice, the best of the franchise.
Team Silent, your work will never be forgotten. We won't let this disaster of a "remake" tarnish the legacy of one of the greatest Horror Games ever made.
I never thought SH2 had that good of graphics, but to this day in this PS4 era I still think SH3 has some really fucking pretty graphics. I still think it looks better than both Home coming and Downpour
Jason Bissainthe Right term! Graphics Fidelity != Good Art Direction. Nowadays games are almost like movies but they don't express any kind of art emotion or art style. Good point Jason!
+FelpHero SH 3 is certainly the strongest in the beautiful art direction and how it holds up. But SH2 is also incredible. The outdoor areas weren't as sharp, but all the indoor claustrophobic environments hold up amazingly well. The PC version, with maxed out resolution allows you to see the insane amount of detail that went into making each room, hallway, floor, wall...in the game. Truly impressive and astounding how good it looks considering it came out nearly 15 years ago. It manages to put all the other newer SH games to shame, which is a testament to the level of work and artistic drive that the original SH games had.
Honestly believe this is the greatest video game of all time... the whole idea of "Silent Hill" is so interesting and out of the norm. First time I played I was on the edge damn near every minute! To recreate that feeling is something that's hard to do life changing experience damn near. Glad I still own my copy of this masterpiece and will keep it as long as I live.
Even after the yrs the 5 original silent hill games are brilliant made by team silent, sh2 n sh3 are masterpieces n my all time favourites, i dont think the remakes will capture wot the originals games are, still play to this day
Happy 22nd Anniversary Silent Hill 2! Such a timeless game filled with sadness, ambiguity, solace, love, all the elements of human emotions allows the gamer to encounter the misty fog, in a town, the setting, the story is amazing. I have the copy for the PlayStation 2. Iconic and awesome sequel of Silent Hill 1.
I can't believe they blurred out Guy Cihi, or at least the place where his head was... when he moves the blur stays stationary lol I loved how the one guy said he acted sexy in front of a mirror in the office haha. amazing
Purely passionate artists putting every detail in to serve the story. Fuck, you do not see this in games anymore! Or many films for that matter. They deserve higher accolade. Silent Hill 2 was a masterpiece. Its amazing to see how many people this game still resonates with.
"Like in the first game, the main character does not have the key role" One of the millions of reasons why this franchise lives in my heart. James and Harry were great characters but those around them created the story. Genius. Perfect example is Heather and Henry. Both were main protagonists but they had the key roles i.e birth of the God and 21 sacrements. Im away to play ps1 now :D
I keep coming back to this because I miss the time when video games were made with passion and crafted with real enthusiasm unlike the cheesy shit they come out with in the market nowadays.
This is not just a game.. it is pure art and beautiful horror that evokes emotions in you, makes you think deeply about yourself and life. Team Silent changed horror forever. Silent Hill always was and always will be the king of horror. Timeless and unforgettable. They put so much heart and emotion and detail into it and you can feel it. Silent Hill 1, 2, 3 and 4 are just perfect. Homecoming is fine too.
It is just crazy. SH is one of my favorite franchises, especially SH2. I have so many great memories playing this game. Thb, I think they did a great job with the remake. Back in the day I owned the special edition or director's cut for the PS2-version with the making of video included and have vivivd memories buying the platinum edition later just to play "born from a wish". I remember myself sitting under the xmas-tree watching the making of and ripping off the laura theme on guitar watching the related scene in the documentary. It is beyond me watching the documentary today, being older than the creators in the vid, knowing what masterpiece they have accomplished in 2001.
The making of really shows what makes it special among the other survival horror games. Deeply depressing themes about the real world horror which people can inflict to each other. Associative monster and environment designes.
I miss the days when video games would come with special "making of" DVD's.
Why'd they stop?
Because now they just release it on youtube, when this game came out, the internet was in its infancy stages
It just feels as though with better graphics its come more apparent that game developers have somehow lost there way.
Because the games industry is a soulless money making machine now
is called DLC
also who would care about how they make the junk they push out now
The reason I still come back to this game is because it literally is the definition of art it reaches to the point where it no longer is a game nor a story. It's a pure masterpiece
I was always more of a RE fan, with Silent Hill taking a back seat, but even I cannot deny the brilliance of this game. Without exaggeration or hyperbole, one of the greatest video games ever made

Maybe...
+Mobtaker SA What do you mean the "whole" team "again?"
Team Silent were never all together because some came later while others were absent throughout making the games.
And considering their last game (SH4), it's clear they want to go in a different direction and fans were prissy about it.
It's best to appreciate what they gave and move on 'cause even Silent Hills proved different doesn't always equal bad.
It was not entirely Konami's fault, Kojima and team were planning their coup d'etat for a long time.
That's a good dream man
@@andrewhare5482 I'm just curious if whatever team Konami assigns to make the game will truly understand what Silent Hill is about.
Thanks!!
Hearing Ito Masahiro explain how the straitjacket monster and others came to be was the ASMR I didn’t know I need. Thanks for this awesome video.
God, Yamaoka is a genius. The whole 'under your skin' idealogy was brilliant. I always have this uneasy feeling when playing SH.
i miss this era of the world so much
Why?
@@schemar17 life was more fun back then
@@dxq1522 i agree the music, tv shows, and overall people were much different back then
I don't know why everyone only talks about P.T and Kojima, these guys were the ones who made Silent Hill famous. I wish they reunite again for christ sake.
this is when you create a masterpiece and not thinking of money
An absolute masterpiece, unmatched to this day. They poured so much love into this game and the results speak for themselves. I feel like every young gamer needs to play this game to understand what a great game should be.
Damn fine game
That blurred out Guy Cihi though.
Sato Takayoshi's animations are downright crazy here. it still looks fantastic and definitely were way beyond its time.
Sato is really good speaking English
It's so amazing that these designers were sooo young by the time they created such an incredible masterpiece that had so much careful thought put into it!! most look to be in their early 20s.
Dang, Konami was such a different place back them. And to think all that amazing talent was put to work into mobile games a few years later is so heartbreaking. I wonder what they are working with nowadays.
Silent Hil 1-3 are to this day the best Horror games....
4 the room is better..!
+-Tony Pro- yes 4 was great
4 had its charms
Nire_Fuster
So what?
lol 4 is good, but nowhere near 1-3.
It's amazing to see how difference the noise filter makes! Everything appears so much more filthy and detailed than it would be otherwise.
Of course the remake could never capture the heights of the original, still an amazing game on its own.
Nostalgia
@@WHiTExNOiR not really.
I'm about to finish the remake. my overall opinion is that it's an excellent horror game, and a decent attempt at a remake, but the original remains far superior.
This game has become an enigma, a true timeless work of art.
THANK YOU TEAM SILENT!
Many saying that the new Angela has a man's face, while Sato says that the original has a "Shwarzenegger mouth"
One of the greatest creative teams of all time
The most beautiful game in the world
This making of gets more and more impressive with every console generation.
The music is what's best in these games
You can't just say that without explaining why. Akira Yamaoka is an incredible composer for these games. The ambient is very relaxing and deep.
Gameplay-wise the old Resident Evil games are far superior.
*****
What is your problem? What in these games do you find amazing then?
***** The story? well, not all Silent Hill games are that great. In the third game you just wake up all the time. The Room was really cool but generally there's not enough guns for my taste.
The games are more psychotic than scary!
The Project Zero/Fatal Frame games are SCARY!
***** go.....and.....fuck...........yourself!
***** yeah, on your face
the true definition of masterpiece
I wanted to come back here and say thank you to everyone on Team Silent that worked on this masterpiece.
Almost 25 years in the making, having finished the remake, it was like a love letter to long time fans and honored Team Silent's vision, if not expanded on it where some aspects of the remake have made things better.
Its a really good time to be alive and see history in the making with a retelling of the masterpiece that is Silent Hill 2. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. My life has been changed yet again.
love letter ? more like an email wrote by chatgpt
@deadsec3554 oh hell no, did you play the remake at all? Bloober Team really did deliver.
@@voyaage1969 Nah it was mediocre
I grew up with Resident Evil games, first Silent Hill i played was Homecoming in 2008, but damn, i have to admit it. Silent Hill 2 is the greatest horror game ever made.Way better than RE 1,2 and 3, which are the most loved ones. My God, i wish RE and Silent Hill franchises never ends. Best franchises ever made alongside GTA. Pleaseee make Silent Hills PT happen!!!!!!!
I sincerely hope that everyone working on the Silent Hill 2 remake has watched this and took a whole lot of notes.
Right?!?! They have no excuse, this is a literal documentary. And they have contact with Konami and ppl involved in the og silent hill's
Unfortunately, it's has been made now by a cheap low-IQ bunch of people in Eastern Europe. Thanks to KONAMI for giving the copyrights!
sadly they have sweet baby pulling strings so no matter what we get it’ll be censored/cut boycott that shit
Boy do I have news for you
@@hulkkkhogan tell us! xD
One of the finest games ever.
TheBlackPigeon That's why the PS3/360 ports were so horrible.
+SamFisherCell lolno.
They can reverse the code from the original. No big deal.
Comment is still funny
Happy 15th anniversary Silent Hill 2!
Akira Yamaoka is a God. I listen to all of his SH music everyday. SH2 and Homecoming are my faves 🖤
What happened to these brilliant people? Why aren't they millionaires?!
+ElcoMoyer Konami happened
Would that really stop them from making games?
***** They need a company willing to invest in them that's also willing to allow them 100% freedom in creating the product without any focus at all on making a 'typical popular' game for the idiots who need to be told where to go next.
And they havent found one in 11 years. Shit
Well Masahiro Ito is a serious artist with work in galleries and has plenty of illustration work under his belt. From what I can see, he's doing exactly what he wants to be doing, I'm sure he's fine.
I'm pretty sure Yamaoko is doing well too.
This is the best Silent Hill ever produced. I hope to see some game like this in future Silent Hill series, but I know it's a remote idea.
This ooozes early 2000s Y2K VHS documentary vibe to me.
The calming british narrator. The calm drum and bass music. The soft rock. The game OST music. The genuine questions and answers and total passion from the devs.
Everything about this documentary is great. Are there any more like it?
There's one for Silent Hill 3 too :)
Such a pity that this making of wasn't a little bit more detailed.. This team has given life to a wonderful piece of heaven. An actual artistic achievement. This game, this team, their job... A singular chance in a gamer's and a man's lifetime. Thank you.
This documentary came with game back in the day and i propably watched it +50 times. I loved these guys. And these games.
This is one of those videos I return to once in a while to remind myself of a time devs cared about more than just a paycheck
In reality, companies work devs so hard that they have no room for creativity or caring. Its not about a paycheck even now
Takayoshi Sato is literally the mastermind behind Silent Hill 2, what a great man.
Silent hill 2 is, by far, the most complete and beautifully made story ever. I don't think anything will ever do better
13 years after this was posted on here, we were given the remake and it is awesome. How blessed we are!
Damn god, I miss Team Silent so much
the effort they put in to their work is kinda unmatched and i'm pretty sad about that "Horror" Games go the Action way and arent even disturbing anymore
Yes i know Amnesia and i see Evil Within but for gods sake they arent compareable to Silent Hill 1-3
its just like that a enemy spots you and you got to run
but in the end there's no Impact on a storyline
Cheers to Team Silent for such Masterpieces
You are awesome for ripping, converting, and uploading this.
I remember when i first saw silent hill 2 in the shop I knew it was gonna be a great game by the amount of work they put into making the case look beautiful the way it folds out with art of the characters and parts of Mary's letter on it
Wow I didn't know the letter came with the disk
I have this on dvd. Got it with the game.
are you from Europe? i as far as i know, only PAL version included this DVD
@@LaughingMajora yep, im from europe and i got the pal version. Did not know it was only on pal though.
@@djpitkapaska5425 yes, it was a great exclusive! american and even japanese version didnt included this awesome DVD.
you are very lucky, bro! 😃
This game changed my life. I never played it when it came out and only came round to it a few weeks ago. It's a masterpiece.
Its almost out soon.
This didn't age well lol
Yeah, this aged like milk in summer
this is what real love to videogames looks like
I never thought SH2 had that good of graphics, but to this day in this PS4 era I still think SH3 has some really fucking pretty graphics. I still think it looks better than both Home coming and Downpour
Graphical Fidelity or art style? Also, I agree with you on SH3.
Jason Bissainthe
Right term! Graphics Fidelity != Good Art Direction. Nowadays games are almost like movies but they don't express any kind of art emotion or art style. Good point Jason!
Agreed entirely, mate. It's why I find games like Okami (not even Okami HD, but 2006 Okami) to be some of the greatest looking of all time.
Technical power is no match for true artistry
Honestly believe this is the greatest video game of all time... the whole idea of "Silent Hill" is so interesting and out of the norm. First time I played I was on the edge damn near every minute! To recreate that feeling is something that's hard to do life changing experience damn near. Glad I still own my copy of this masterpiece and will keep it as long as I live.
13:57 I can't unsee Angela Orosco's Schwarzenegger mouth now.
Even after the yrs the 5 original silent hill games are brilliant made by team silent, sh2 n sh3 are masterpieces n my all time favourites, i dont think the remakes will capture wot the originals games are, still play to this day
Such a masterpiece.
Sculpted and articulate. Like a fine painting.
From the story, character design, music, everything is perfect
Tell that to Tom Hullet he thought Troy Baker doing the Phantom of the Opera chainsmoker editon was a better voice what a clown.
Making of a "Legend" :P.
I can't believe they blurred out Guy Cihi, or at least the place where his head was... when he moves the blur stays stationary lol
I loved how the one guy said he acted sexy in front of a mirror in the office haha. amazing
They filmed him without his permission and he requested it to be blurred out.
I have tried to search those buildings of 1:54 in google maps, but I can't, even with that river and bridge of reference. Anybody knows where it is?
one of the best ps2 games ever
Thank you Fungo, much appreciated :).
Purely passionate artists putting every detail in to serve the story. Fuck, you do not see this in games anymore! Or many films for that matter.
They deserve higher accolade. Silent Hill 2 was a masterpiece. Its amazing to see how many people this game still resonates with.
THE BEST IN DA WHOLE WORLD FOR ME
You know, you know, you know, you know, you know, you know.
thanks for uploading this.
I really like Sato.
"Like in the first game, the main character does not have the key role"
One of the millions of reasons why this franchise lives in my heart.
I can't unsee Sato on Maria's face now.
Why is it so hard for developers to make games like this?....
How many more years until we get good games again?
The making of really shows what makes it special among the other survival horror games. Deeply depressing themes about the real world horror which people can inflict to each other. Associative monster and environment designes.
