The Toybaru WOULD BE. valid if you could actually get one, but you can't. I've been looking basically since the car was announced 2 years ago as a replacement for my Fiat Abarth. Every dealer I talked to told me 6-9 months and 3rd or 4th on the waiting list, and no you couldn't test drive one first. If a dealer did have one in stock, like the Atlanta based Toyota dealer my cousin works for, they price gouge that sucker like they'll never be made again. My out the door price for a white GR86 Premium 6spd as of a 8 days ago "WITH THE FRIENDS AND FAMILY DISCOUNT", was $41,950. Y'all that's for a car with a $31k MSRP. I came home this past weekend with a Snowflake white ND2 GT soft top with.a couple of upgrades for $30k and change out the door. Toyota and their dealers made my decision for me.
car Amazing Miata 2.0 ND, 1 year ago I got a Miata 2.0 ND Sport, and it's really awesome to drive easy to drift nice design great interior nice engine nice sound of naturally aspirated engine, Racaro sports seats, by the way I did some modifications such as Ohlins R&T, Oz Ultraleggera, Brembo 4 pomanti, slotted discs, Map, Manifolds, K&N filter, Ulter V2 Sport exhaust, and other little things, now cornering is really fast
I daily drive in 4 season weather. Great car & its a 2016 MX-5 Club soft top with the Brembo / BBS package except my seats are cloth. BTW the shifter was missing its gear pattern metal top on it in your test car.
@@jadeath128 Its my 1st convertible. So I take care of it. Snow / ice / monsoon rain / sub zero temperatures - no leaks & the AC works well because of the limited space. I don't EVER park under any trees & in hot summer have a Carcraft sunscreen that will last the life of the car. I bought a soft bristle brush & use the 303 Convertible Top Cleaner / Fabric Guard. Every car wash is by hand & that 303 Cleaner gets brushed on & sprayed off. Every fall the 303 fabric guard gets applied with sponge brushes. After 6 years in 4 season weather the top looks like the day I drove it off the dealer lot. Cleaned the top filters 2 times but barely anything in them. The top is really good you just have to take care of it. While the RF is probably the more durable roof it still has the same roof filters so trees are what you want to avoid parking under in any season. I've had feet of snow & ice that I had to dig out of. No leaks & the top has done a great job protecting the interior. My winter tires are stacked on a dolley in the garage & change / rotate them myself. Its been a solid car in some of the worst weather I've driven thru in my life. A great car !
@@ag4allgood Thanks for such a detailed respond! I’m thinking of buying one but not sure about the roof because is really hot in México and I only go to the US in the summer, and if I go to Canada as an exchange student I’m bringing my car with me, so I’m worried about the weathers it can handle if I buy the soft top.
@@jadeath128 Just remember the roof drain system is the same for both ND / ND2 models soft top or RF. Parking under trees is a bad idea soft top or RF. The drains get plugged then the interior will flood until the filters / drain system is cleaned out.
@@jadeath128 Yep , I get that. The A/C in my car has worked well on extremely hot / humid days. The interior space is small so its usually a quick process but I have a nice Cover Craft sun screen that helps deflect the rays. Still gets very hot on those days but if I want the A/C its there. The soft top has been durable for me & its nice to have a great all around view when its down. Plus its $3500 to $4500 cheaper than the RF.
Nice review. I would highly recommend some sport springs, ive put BBRs on mine (UK) and a custom map which improves the torque (2021 ND2). I cant wait for a decent turbo kit to be developed for the UK market, its crying out for 250+ hp.
Excellent review. Soft top quieter with the roof down. Sound system excellent. No Apple car play before 2020 ND so use phone on magnetic holder for satnav. Keep in car port of garage to prolong life of ragtop. Digital speedo would be good.
Can you find aftermarket spare donut for these? NB not only had a spare, but also bigger boot. Also is the stock ground clearance sufficient? Ever had issues with scraping etc?
Keep in mind this is closer in size to the NA. There is no spare available, and it would not fit in the boot if you had one. It comes with a fix a flat kit and an air pump. Some models do come with a jack. My 22 RFGT has never had an issue bottoming out or scraping. Stock ride height is plenty to park over curbs without scratching or grinding. Lower the vehicle is another issue. Too low and you will have issues
How did I find your page? My son an engineer by day for an aerospace mfr company, and hot rodder at night, had me take care of his Miata while him and his wife are on vacation. His experienced catastrophic engine failure, and unable to leave well enough alone, he swapped a v8, did the carbon fiber body and hardtop by hand, and its pretty. But after driving it, I was horrified, its nuts... So I came on craigslist looking for a used miata, dont want to buy new like him and swap for no reason, only swapping a used car, and definitely not a v8, hahaha. I am going to do a K swap, I stil want some kind of fuel efficiency hahaha, or rather I am too old to scare myself with torque again, I am not young anymore haha. But I do like your guys new bodies and interiors better! already got rear from a ctsv, stop tech brakes all around, looking at suspension parts still and other things! Already got a nice sparco steering wheel, bride seats, will prob cut and weld my own rollbar. I need to figure out camera stuff like you have here, my son said I need to make a youtube! I only know how to watch stuff!
I wish the base 6speed Fiata came with an LSD. It gives you the long low end torque you don't get in the Miata, but an LSD would turn the fun factor up to 11 in the twisties
The Fiat stopped making the car more than 2 years ago had one it was always in the shop many, many times so when the 4-year warranty was up I dumped it & bought the 2021 Mazda MX5 & it has been trouble-free for over 2 years, The Fiats engine was shipped to Japan so the quality was as they say FIAT / Fix It again Tony /Garbage.
One big reason to not buy and ND1 or ND2, glass transmission for track use, ND2 is better dampen with Dual mass flywheel. Had one, end up going with the Abarth 124, NC tranny, easy to mod for more power and torque, GOOD Cooling. Track use Radiator, Oil Cooler and tranmission on the ND reaches a VERY high temp
I will own one of these eventually but I think the prices have gotten out of whack. The Recaro/BB trim is the only one with with proper supportive bolsters but makes you forfeit auto climate and AFS. Unacceptable at 40+ grand.
What all the people who compare the brz and the miata seem to leave out is relianility. The gr86 and rhe brz have subaru flat 4 engines. Those will never last as long as or be as easy to service as a miata engine. And when subaru engines go, they GO. I say this from experience owning a wrx that has shat its motor twice. Stay away from flat 4 engines unless you have the money to support one when it breaks
They've improved a ton since then (research the 2015 + WRX engines), additionally the naturally aspirated BR-Z and GR86 are very easy to work on and also quite proven too. Not as good as the Miata but not something to shit on. Maybe I'll do an actual comparison video sometime.
@Realistick that would be an interesting comparison. I wonder if they've finally fixed the oil starvation issues that have plagued the boxers for ages. I know the miata engine is particularly made to be g-resistant, but subarus tend to start starving their rod bearings when you start pulling some lateral gs. Ik being NA helps the brz with detonation and head gaskets, but there's more to subaru reliability than that
The 2023 GR86 & The BRZ have had many engine problems & some are exploding!! Not very good quality & older ones do lose their value very quickly not unlike the MX5 which you have to pay a lot of money to buy them used.
I own soft top club with bbs/brembo/recaro package and also a gr86. Love them both, but would have the gr86 if I could only have one (and for the fun to drive, not for the practicality advantage)
Having owned MX5s, my advice would be to buy a Mk3 2 litre with a retractable hard top roof. Then have a reputable turbo conversion installed because none of the MX5s are properly powered.
4:55 Mazda is killing the interior game. All of their cars have very high quality interiors, especially when you consider their price point. My mom has an Audi Q8, and the Mazda interiors feel about 90-95% as good.
I have always wanted one but we would not stand a chance getting hit on the side by someone running a light or stop sign if it’s bigger than a Prius. It’s a speed bump to big trucks. It just isn’t safe on today’s roads sadly.
@@FefyGT I was hit on driver side while driving a Prius because a Fire F150 ran a red light. My car was totaled but I can’t imagine if I was in a Miata. He hit so hard that he may have driven over the Miata like a speed bump.
Man I dk if I should get a ND or a s2k. I’ve owned 3 NA Miata’s and I regret selling my 3rd one, imo it was so cleannnn BRG too! I do want to try something new though and a ND would be fun but I’ve also heard s2k’s are a blast + they’re holding value so I can drive and enjoy the sht out of it. Ugh
Nicely done. Mechanically, the new Miata is very similar to the '16 Mazda3 hatchback that I thoroughly enjoyed when I had it. I've been driving manual transmissions for half a century, and the Mazda 6-speed in the Miata is essentially the same one I had in my hatchback. It's easily the best manual transmission I've ever driven, and I agree about the light feel of the clutch as well. Alas, back and knee issues meant I had to get something higher off the ground, and at that point I decided to go to a hybrid, which Mazda has missed the boat on, and all of them have automatic transmissions, though my Kia Niro at least has a dual-clutch version. I'd love to see Mazda's treatment of my Niro.
I just test drove 3 Miatas.. A 2022 RF auto..nice car but..no get up and go at 4K rpm and under..only can be described as..slugglish. A 2023 soft top manual..still really slugglish at under 4K rpm..this surprised me..but it goes like a lil bat outta hell at high rpms over 6K as does the auto.. A 2017 RF manual was the best of the 3..because driven at under 4K RPM where most people drive 99% of the time...its a really fun car..lots of get up and go. I found out the gearing changed in 2019 to the slugglish current model we have now not very good at under 4K rpm. Why Mazda did this is a mystery to me...because the 2017 hands down beat the current model in fun factor by a HUGE amount at normal street driving speeds. Who is going to rev up to 6K+ rpms in regular street traffic? For the twisty winding road perhaps a benefit..but for regular driving get the previous model. I saw on the Miata forum they are in agreement w/my assesment..one commenter said..the current model is a superior car to the earlier ND model..but the earlier model is..a better....Miata.. This guy bought the 2018 over the 2019..for a lot of reasons..read the comments on his video and why people agreed.. th-cam.com/video/WwcHuuBOZnU/w-d-xo.html
@@BCamacho Try the 2017 or 2018 models to compare..you will be suprised.. Sure the 2023 model is as good in the mid range and better at higher rpms over 6K... But at under 4K rpm..the current model..is a dog.. I still may buy the current model if I can adjust my mind and feet to the low torque at low rpm's..but may just opt out for the 2017/18 model because it is just a funner car to drive in regular street driving... Just go to the Miata forum..for confirmation..I'm not making this stuff up.. Even the person in this vid..compared the low end torque in current model to a Mazda 3..thats not great..
Too small inside. Seats do not recline back enough. Weird hump on the passenger side floor. Cupholders in the wrong place. Sub par materials. Better off with a Mini Cooper convertible for comfort, handling, four seats, better color options and just more fun to drive.

The mx5 miata only has one problem. Its and mx5. Get over that and its insanely good, dont get over that and you will pay more for a more powerful lesser sports car. Then a boring estate or suv/small van as a cheap practical beater 2 car garage Mx5 & Skoda 2d superb estate ???
this car ain't worth the asking price. it's an impractical car at that price. not super fast or even that fast, only 2 seats, only thin or medium people can sit inside (fat people need not apply), and I keep reading that the car is sluggish compared to the models from 2018 and prior.
"Just like a sub-par chiropractor...." Wish you had the soft top to review. Your head wouldn't touch the roof. It's lighter and simpler. It's quieter than the RF with their tops down. It's a lot less expensive. It's a real convertible, not a targa top. It's what a Miata was always supposed to be.
Sold mine after a year. Cramped, high wind and road noise, and overall so-so quality issues. Sea-sickness sets in on poorly paved roads - especially hiways. Fun factor wears off pretty fast. Lots of $, little space. If you want and can afford to have a 3rd car for Sunday drives in the twisties, this may be for you, otherwise, pass on it.
I appreciate the car's simplicity and lightness, but the interior needs to be at least 10% larger. It’s just too ridiculous to try to stuff a normal size dude in this and be comfortable.😕
Eh, drove one, brand new, last week on test. What a total & utter disappointment. Noisey (not in a nice way) rattly engine. Wind noise. Shaking transmission. Way way past its sell-by date. Looks nice but its a tortoise underneath. And stupidly expensive. Avoid

I came home this past weekend with a Snowflake white ND2 GT soft top with.a couple of upgrades for $30k and change out the door. Toyota and their dealers made my decision for me.
No bad decision!
car Amazing Miata 2.0 ND, 1 year ago I got a Miata 2.0 ND Sport, and it's really awesome to drive easy to drift nice design great interior nice engine nice sound of naturally aspirated engine, Racaro sports seats, by the way I did some modifications such as Ohlins R&T, Oz Ultraleggera, Brembo 4 pomanti, slotted discs, Map, Manifolds, K&N filter, Ulter V2 Sport exhaust, and other little things, now cornering is really fast
Reminds me of the Honda Del Soul 😎
Love how he equates storage space to how many bodies you can fit inside the trunk. Guess jack the ripper wouldn't be his target market
I've got the roof off. I'm moving fast. Playing great music. That's all l need. Bought it. Spent £0
3:39: looks like the emblem which indicate the shift pattern has gone missing from the shift knob!
I daily drive in 4 season weather. Great car & its a 2016 MX-5 Club soft top with the Brembo / BBS package except my seats are cloth. BTW the shifter was missing its gear pattern metal top on it in your test car.
Does the AC works well in summer with the soft top? and in rain? it doesn’t leak or something with the soft top?
Ordered the Sport base for $29k with a manual. One option - Soul Red Crystal
Nice review. I would highly recommend some sport springs, ive put BBRs on mine (UK) and a custom map which improves the torque (2021 ND2). I cant wait for a decent turbo kit to be developed for the UK market, its crying out for 250+ hp.
Hks made a supercharger kit,centrifugal i think,for 6000 euro +-
Excellent review. Soft top quieter with the roof down. Sound system excellent. No Apple car play before 2020 ND so use phone on magnetic holder for satnav. Keep in car port of garage to prolong life of ragtop. Digital speedo would be good.
Great video. Does this model have the eibach lowering springs and do you have any thoughts on them vs standard set up?
Needs: symmetrical center-exit exhaust, lowering springs, wheel spacers, stubby antenna, 205/40-17 tires
@@huntersmith8338 Some people put aftermarket donuts in the ND though with still a place to spare in the boot. There are YT videos about that.
9:00 was not expecting that....
I have a 2017 Fiat 124 Spider which is basically the same thing and it's been rock solid. Would only ever replace it with the next gen mx5
How about the GDI engine? How is that maintenance handled?
Fuel induction service every 25-30k and it should be alright.
Great review!
I will own one of these eventually but I think the prices have gotten out of whack. The Recaro/BB trim is the only one with with proper supportive bolsters but makes you forfeit auto climate and AFS. Unacceptable at 40+ grand.
All the car prices be it used or new have been out of whack since the damn pandemic.
@@khelgarironfist3301 plandemic
Yeah… it’s crazy and unfortunately doesn’t look like prices will go down lol
Avg price of a new car in 2023 is 48k. This is 37k not 40k. Also - is the lack of auto climate a huge sacrifice? Really?
COMMENT my fav car review channel very genuine
Love the RF GT 🎉❤
Why does your rf come with the manual stick? May I ask where you are? In Taiwan, we only have soft top version comes with the stick.
Hello I am taipae at teehotawantin hotel and have rf manual
You are toilet?
Never mind. I see your plate now. So the rf in states comes with manual transmission option.

@@ROXYshark savagegeese tracked their BRZ/86 quite a bit, never had issues. Probably just need to do a few minor myids to make them track worthy.
I own soft top club with bbs/brembo/recaro package and also a gr86. Love them both, but would have the gr86 if I could only have one (and for the fun to drive, not for the practicality advantage)
I could play this game for hours
Having owned MX5s, my advice would be to buy a Mk3 2 litre with a retractable hard top roof. Then have a reputable turbo conversion installed because none of the MX5s are properly powered.
Mx5 is great on gas vs gr86
@GOOGLE USER Ive beat the crap out of my 22 with over 32k on it in a year and have never got less than 35mpg.
4:55 Mazda is killing the interior game. All of their cars have very high quality interiors, especially when you consider their price point. My mom has an Audi Q8, and the Mazda interiors feel about 90-95% as good.
(Says in Mr.Regular's old man voice)ARE YOU THE GUY THAT WAS IN ZACHS VIDEO WITH THE GR COROLLA?
Great car pure driving experience
I have always wanted one but we would not stand a chance getting hit on the side by someone running a light or stop sign if it’s bigger than a Prius. It’s a speed bump to big trucks. It just isn’t safe on today’s roads sadly.
That scenario is deadly anyways in any car.
@@FefyGT I was hit on driver side while driving a Prius because a Fire F150 ran a red light. My car was totaled but I can’t imagine if I was in a Miata. He hit so hard that he may have driven over the Miata like a speed bump.
So can the powertrain take the turbo kit that I know is out there? Or is that asking for trouble?
For headshots with glasses, def get a circular polarizer filter.
im currently saving cash to buy one
Man I dk if I should get a ND or a s2k. I’ve owned 3 NA Miata’s and I regret selling my 3rd one, imo it was so cleannnn BRG too!
I do want to try something new though and a ND would be fun but I’ve also heard s2k’s are a blast + they’re holding value so I can drive and enjoy the sht out of it.
Ugh
Great video. Thanks.
I like the drop top version more
Wouldn’t call it cheap. But it’s definitely reasonable priced.
It’s beautiful
Nice but I’ll stick with the Elise
Imagine if Toyota made a GR collab 😂
The earlier ND has less power so idk what you're talking about. My 2023 gets going off stops
@@tsstereo5082 Yep! An ND1 feels a bit punchier under 4K. But if I’m honest, life really begins when you hit 7.

If this guy were to be reduced to a 1964 MGB or maybe an earlierTR3, he'd be praising this MX-5 to the hilt.
Too small inside. Seats do not recline back enough. Weird hump on the passenger side floor. Cupholders in the wrong place. Sub par materials. Better off with a Mini Cooper convertible for comfort, handling, four seats, better color options and just more fun to drive.
It seems if found this place in the unbound world night cop chase. If you'd think boxer engine should not exists for the VSCoders you are right 9:34. Can you find aftermarket spare donut for these? NB not only had a spare, but also bigger boot. Also is the stock ground clearance sufficient? Ever had issues with scraping etc?
The mx5 miata only has one problem. Its and mx5. Get over that and its insanely good, dont get over that and you will pay more for a more powerful lesser sports car. I think its dumb when people put it down for having a small boot and just two seats 😓 its a sport car!
Im looking at mx5s, s2000s, brz/86’s. Fun car i love in the garage. Then a boring estate or suv/small van as a cheap practical beater
2 car garage
Mx5 & Skoda 2d superb estate ???
They should make it a Targa.
Why? The RF already gives that feel plus no rear window
good stuff
all this and yours for only 69k in this day n age! Thats 45k more than what its worth....
this car ain't worth the asking price. it's an impractical car at that price. not super fast or even that fast, only 2 seats, only thin or medium people can sit inside (fat people need not apply), and I keep reading that the car is sluggish compared to the models from 2018 and prior.
Zircon looks quite good in person, but rather bland in photos.
"Just like a sub-par chiropractor...."
Wish you had the soft top to review. Your head wouldn't touch the roof. It's lighter and simpler. It's quieter than the RF with their tops down. It's a lot less expensive. It's a real convertible, not a targa top. It's what a Miata was always supposed to be.
What if you want the best car under $33,000?
$29k for a Sport Miata
Sold mine after a year. Cramped, high wind and road noise, and overall so-so quality issues. Sea-sickness sets in on poorly paved roads - especially hiways. Fun factor wears off pretty fast.
Lots of $, little space. If you want and can afford to have a 3rd car for Sunday drives in the twisties, this may be for you, otherwise, pass on it.
I would get.this car i thpugh 0 to 60 was 4.5 sec. 6 sec forget it lol.
If only interest rates weren’t sky high…! It’s not even worth it to finance a third of the price of the RF. Shame!
no poplights no buy
Cool. So what you're saying is that it needs forced induction. Let's get it to 450hp 🤣
I appreciate the car's simplicity and lightness, but the interior needs to be at least 10% larger. It’s just too ridiculous to try to stuff a normal size dude in this and be comfortable.😕
For the price and low hp I am just not seeing it
It’s light, it’s faster and more powerful than it seems due to the weight ratio
ill buy a used RF 😊
Poor trunk storage, I would rather buy GR86
I would rather put the top down & this is why the Mazda Miata has sold more than a million convertibles!!
Eh, drove one, brand new, last week on test. What a total & utter disappointment. Noisey (not in a nice way) rattly engine. Wind noise. Shaking transmission. Way way past its sell-by date. Looks nice but its a tortoise underneath. And stupidly expensive. Avoid
I really would prefer the GR86 over this, but it's impossible to buy in jewrope so I'll guess I'm "doomed" to enjoy this amazing roadster.
You're a bit too tall for that car 😅
Let's not mistake value for fun...
