A couple of things. From an electrical standpoint, there's no input or output on a potentiometer, so it doesn't matter which way you wire them. If you're noticing a difference in resistance between opposite lead wirings, it's most likely due to a very sketchy or poorly constructed pot. Otherwise, it's just two resistors (left to center and center to right) whose resistance will always sum to the outer lead resistance. That's not to say the pot will give you 0 Ohms when "off" and 500k Ohms (for a 500k pot) when "on" either, but you will get very close to them (plus or minus 10% even on good pots). Second, pot size does not matter at all. A 500k pot will be 500k (again, plus or minus 10% or so) whether it's CTS, Alpha, or whoever...unless it's defective or intentionally mislabeled (fraud) and those are different problems altogether. It comes down to the QC, not the size. An expensive dime pot will be better than a cheap quarter sized one. The size is only important when pushing amps of power, which a guitar isn't. The same is also true of capacitors (with the exception of multi-layer ceramic which is piezoelectric), so don't spend extra on orange drops. Third, wiring insulation is all but irrelevant. I prefer braided cable myself, just for the feel of it, but I'm not reaching into the back cavity on a guitar more than once a year at best, so why pay extra for that? Again, it comes down to QC. Solid copper vs. CCA (copper-clad aluminum) vs. aluminum (garbage). What do the solder joints look like? Good fillets or cold joint? Is there any strain relief? It may not affect the tone, but guitars get banged around and stress relief keeps the solder joints from cracking and cracks in electrical circuits are just really bad capacitors. There's a lot of misinformation when it comes to audio and musical electronics, and I hate to see it perpetuated because it ends up costing people way more money than it needs to.
I remember Fender was selling re-issue bumblebees for ridiculous money, and people were saying they sounded awesome, it turned out they were 20 cent caps with a bumble bee heatshrink jacket on them.
@@nycholdit was Gibson. But Fender did sell “gold foil” pickups that weren’t actual gold foils - it was just a decorative cover. When I started whining about calling them gold foil pickups in their social media ads being misleading, they subtly changed the wording to something along the lines of gold foil “style” pickups, lol. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who noticed that Fender tried to pass them off as the real deal, but you know. I’ll bet some people with that guitar still are unaware that their Fender doesn’t have gold foils, lol. 😂

@@nychold You are absolutely right. I have a Samick Japanese Silvertone Strat. It’s all thick plywood with has thick Ceramic magnets and good wire. The pots and cap measures Fender quality. No microphonicity, smooth rotation and the wiring is great, no cheap solder. The Japanese made Silvertone is a good Strat. 9.5 radius and the frets polished up very well. I was surprised by how 50s/ early 60s it is as far as sound. Straight neck. I don’t know what it cost new, but it has a good single coil bite. I agree that the sum of parts are quality. And the QC in build quality is the key.

I feel the same way honestly, don’t get me wrong my 335 is great but, it should be a solid top, not a laminated top. I think Gibson does it that way for their historical accuracy to exactly how they did them in the 50s. This is the modern 335 they never made.

Sweet! Sean/Cathy's guitars rock, I have a Reaper (Green) and was looking at the white or gold Gauntlet. I still have not heard you rock out on the Gauntlet, I've been waiting for that before I get one. I hope they are still available while I wait. Thanks for another cool video Trey.
@@TreyShreddings And truthfully good dime size. Pots caps and push/pulls can be had, and the wiring is all a matter of good QC in the soldering process. I see really great shielding in both guitars. It’s like building a house. Lumber is lumber. But the way that the lumber is tied together and understanding of structural integrity is what matters most. If you build an outhouse as your home it doesn’t matter the lumber or brand of nails. If you build a house like a home with the same material but add the knowledge of structural integrity, it doesn’t fall apart like an outhouse. Same lumber, same nails, but the understanding of how it works together is the difference. Great show Trey! Sean is a master at building guitars. He can take an $85 Tele, and replace a few things that matter and it will gig like a $1000 Mexican Strat. And I know that, I have a 50s reissue Fiesta Red 7.25 neck Mexican Tele, and the video of Sean’s $85 Tele that he upgraded to mine and they sound the same. QC and being a real luthier/ carpenter turned that $85 outhouse Tele into the top standard of what a Tele can be. Don’t you touch my Scarred Guitar!
I’m new to this channel. Looks pretty fun. Question: What make and model is this great-looking guitar? (Or is it custom made by Trey, or Sean, or whoever he is?) Thx
Looks awesome man. But still feels weird to me when a small, independent guitar maker/luthier, outsources import guitars. Is it simply a way to be able to offer their brand without the custom-made pricetag??
Try to Hand make a guitar for $700. It’s just not viable. If Sean were to make the reaper in his shop the same way they made it overseas it would easily cost $1000 more than it is already. That’s why ALL the other brands make guitars overseas. It’s the only way he can get his guitar into the hands of the everyday person who can’t afford a custom made instrument.
I just bought an ESP LTD EC1000 that retails for 1100 bucks for 450 off of FB marketplace. It sat for months at that price before I bought it. The guitar market is so saturated and so many people are dumping all their C-19 lockdown purchases that prices have plummeted. God bless you guys for trying to start company at this time and I hope it works out, but it’s rough out there for sellers. I’d 799 a great retail price for what you’re getting? Yeah, but if you decide to let it go, that’s a 200-250 guitar on marketplace just from lack of brand recognition. I’m not jealous of anyone trying to start a guitar brand in this day and age. You guys are good people, I like you guys and hope this is successful but it’s gonna be rough. That blue reaper is beautiful though that’s no lie.
not to take away6 from shawn but Firefly is doing the same thing with so many styles for 250 to 500 and also AIO.. guitar MAX did an awesome video just recently on there set before you get it.. for less... shawn needs to bring the price down a bit..great video..thanks
these guitars are quite a step above those other brands you mentioned. in the video randy whos been a dealer for 44 years said these in todays market could be $1300-$1500. so at $799 these are a great deal. you're paying for quality.
@@TreyShreddingsI agree. Not at all in the same category. AIO might come close with a good setup, but still don’t think they are using top of the line parts . . . maybe we need Sean to get an AIO and a Firefly side by side with his guitars to compare.
Trey, are you starting to feel like Paul Reed Smith handing scarred guitars to people and saying check this guitar out? You might be on to something here.
@@larrygessner3155 I do love sharing something i believe in with people. Paul was kind to me and spent as much time as possible with me discussing his guitars. I think sharing the love with these instruments is fulfilling and inspiring. I may do more content like this.
You are absolutely correct. I know trey says these guitars are built nicer. Or what ever it is he is saying. But I don't Know. I've never touched a scarr guitar so I can't rightfully say one way or the other. But what I do know Is I own several firefliy LP style guitars. I love them they are amazing now firefly has ss frets. Locking tuners. The full size pots binding. And other great features. And everyone I have seen says that firefly guitar's compare to 600 - 1,000 U.S. dollar Epiphones and they sell for around 200 or even less. So ummm yeah I like Shawn and watch every episode he posts but there's so much competition now. 😮
I don't know about him man. He missed a whole section of hair while he was bleaching it lol! Edit: I like Sean and his channel, and he does phenomenal work, but these guitars are ugly as sin. It doesn't know if it wants to be a Les Paul, or an SG. Edit: On David's new album, he plays all sorts of different guitars. There's a video of him making the album, and it shows him playing a 335. Sweetwater's quality has went downhill in the last year. I've bought a few guitars off of them, but the oast two were junk and I had to send them back. The thing is, I paid for the first one to be setup, and the second one pleck'd, and they still came messes up! O don't think they did anything. The first one had a bum tuner and wasn't intonated, and the second had the low E saddle dimed so you couldn't intonate it anymore, and that's the one I had pleck'd. The fisrt one was the Sire 7 T-style and the second one was an Epiphone Explorer. I won't shop at Sweetwater any longer.
i dont want to keep being negative but those humbuckers are sounding really thin on the high strings and then really muffled on the low strings are those the Vietnam pickups or cathys. i gotta be hoest though if im gonna comment. the only thing that bothers me is that top horn is so big. my band mate play a bunch of gibsons from a less expensive 1979 the sg to some made to measure les pauls a custom shop sg and V. and the reaper doesnt sound better than his gibsons in my opinion i know gibsons are expensive and the kluson style keys are not the best but a gibson with a set of grovers well we play entire gigs without having to tune but maybe 1 time mid show. i like sean like i said and i wish him the best of luck but dogging on gibsons arent making his seem better id say his guitars are the equivalent of epiphones ltd etc. i personally have been playing the same two 60s jaguars for 20 plus years i lost around 25 high end and vintage guitars to heroin addiction which im happy to say i havent shot heroin in 13 years. i just dont get the dogging on gibsons they make a killer guitar they just cost alot
@@TreyShreddings cool ill do it. like i said i dont want to be negative i eally like sean and cathy and wish them the best of luck nd your a great player. i think sean can respect someone being totally honest on how they feel and i try and be respectful. you guys should try and advertie out the reaper to josh homme fans cause it does remind me alot of the ovation electrics that are pretty rare and his fans love having like all of dimes fans want an ml or wash burn, all johnny thunders fans want a les paul double cut junior etc and so on
No I do guitar shows all over the US but my shop is based in the Daytona Beach area. But I also used to play in the Sarasota area a lot a few years ago.
Problem with guitars now is they haven’t changed. No innovation. The age of technology and we are nitpicking the pots. I’d like to see some new bridge designs, new tuning methods. On board electronics for effects processing. Built in mini amps. New body shapes. New scale lengths. Guitar had a 20 year run of awesomeness and then it fell off. Rock music has gotten sparse. It’s time to bring it back.
Well said! I do feel like this guitar is innovative in the way that it fixes a lot of the problems that Gibson has with their guitars. The body shape on this reaper is pretty unique and I would say the newest innovation for a bridge was the Evertune
he still makes guitars. he designed these and had them built to his specifications in vietnam. had he built them here by hand they wouldve been ALOT more expensive.
I have visited and met Randy in his shop. Nice selection of varied and quality instruments. Randy was super nice and enjoyed his shop.

I’ll be making a video on it ASAP. It rocks. Gig test tomorrow!
Never mentioned if they’re “neck through the body”. That’s important.
It's telecaster on top and les Paul on the bottom.
Saw Billy Gibbons signing th3 back of a single cut real close to your design shape
But , well , it was US made
What guitar is this for 799? Brand and model please
Functionally what is wrong with the pots? Saying you don’t like is non descriptive.
They are just lower quality pots than his American guitars it’s a preference thing
Those pots are like .75 cents vs there 2.25 counterpart in CTs or American ones .
I’m new to this channel. Looks pretty fun.
Question: What make and model is this great-looking guitar? (Or is it custom made by Trey, or Sean, or whoever he is?)
Thx
Welcome aboard! its a scarred reaper by sean
Nice shirt.
Thanks noodles
What is the blue guitar in the beginning?
If you watch the video you’ll find out
He needs a little
Scarred Screw Dish
Wiring backwards? Not sure about that
no
What guitar is that?
does it have that goopy urethane finish too?
No
@@TreyShreddings lacquer finish then?
How can one obtain one of these?
I want a p90 gauntlet
The link is in the description
Thanks man, appreciate you watching and commenting
AFUCKINGAMAZING!
Size of the pots mean nothing.
It gives me a hint of Gibson florentine, but I really like the way that Sean did those...
When i become a rockstar, you guys can sponsor me.AVG
Lol
What guitar is that?
It’s a scarred reaper from Scar My Guitar
Nice hair dude
Lol
not to take away6 from shawn but Firefly is doing the same thing with so many styles for 250 to 500 and also AIO.. guitar MAX did an awesome video just recently on there set before you get it.. for less... shawn needs to bring the price down a bit..great video..thanks
these guitars are quite a step above those other brands you mentioned. in the video randy whos been a dealer for 44 years said these in todays market could be $1300-$1500. so at $799 these are a great deal. you're paying for quality.
But I don't
Know.
Dude has a Baltimore accent
Guess I'm going to buy me another Gibson
lol
i dont want to keep being negative but those humbuckers are sounding really thin on the high strings and then really muffled on the low strings are those the Vietnam pickups or cathys. i gotta be hoest though if im gonna comment. the only thing that bothers me is that top horn is so big. my band mate play a bunch of gibsons from a less expensive 1979 the sg to some made to measure les pauls a custom shop sg and V. and the reaper doesnt sound better than his gibsons in my opinion i know gibsons are expensive and the kluson style keys are not the best but a gibson with a set of grovers well we play entire gigs without having to tune but maybe 1 time mid show. i like sean like i said and i wish him the best of luck but dogging on gibsons arent making his seem better id say his guitars are the equivalent of epiphones ltd etc. i personally have been playing the same two 60s jaguars for 20 plus years i lost around 25 high end and vintage guitars to heroin addiction which im happy to say i havent shot heroin in 13 years. i just dont get the dogging on gibsons they make a killer guitar they just cost alot
The amp sound wasn’t the best watch my video i did on the reaper by itself and you’ll hear that it sounds great
@@TreyShreddings cool ill do it. like i said i dont want to be negative i eally like sean and cathy and wish them the best of luck nd your a great player. i think sean can respect someone being totally honest on how they feel and i try and be respectful. you guys should try and advertie out the reaper to josh homme fans cause it does remind me alot of the ovation electrics that are pretty rare and his fans love having like all of dimes fans want an ml or wash burn, all johnny thunders fans want a les paul double cut junior etc and so on
@@TreyShreddingsIs the binding installed before the frets or is the binding "properly" over the fret edges?
Was born in 1980
Isn't he from sarasota
I don’t know
No I do guitar shows all over the US but my shop is based in the Daytona Beach area.
"Built in Vietnam""?? I thought Sean builds these by hand....Foreign made?? Say it aint so!!!
he still makes guitars. he designed these and had them built to his specifications in vietnam. had he built them here by hand they wouldve been ALOT more expensive.
