Let the Columbo like research skills begin . If anyone can match up specific gunsmoke episodes to the location shown I'd really like to know the season and episode number .
hey Adam i had a look on westernstv.com - just at random picked - series 4 esp 15 - it looks very similar to that place, a few exterior shots, gotta be around that time frame (series wise) maybe?
We are Soo addicted to Gunsmoke! Since the COVID-19, most show’s stopped production. So we started watching Gunsmoke, and now a year later, it is still our go to show! Love it!!
Old Westerns will always remind me of my dear grandfather who absolutely adored the genre and would tell me stories about watching John Wayne flicks on a small TV in Cuba. Until the day he passed there wasn't a single time you could hand him the remote and not end up watching a Western. Fond memories.
As a kid, I had no interest in the western "horse opera" tv shows or movies...later on got into the Wild Wild West reruns, then other old shows like Bonanza and Gunsmoke....been marathon watching Gunsmoke episodes on youtube for the first time
I still watch the old re-runs of Gunsmoke and Have Gun will Travel on tv. Love it. Loved the Lone Ranger with Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels when I was a kid and still do. There's just not much on present day tv that appeals to me anymore. I think much of the idea we have of the old west was created by Hollywood.
I've said it once and I'll say it again you find the coolest off the beaten path attractions. Thanks and can't wait for your next adventure. Safe travels.
Thank you Adam westerns are very dear to my heart and now I got a cat who loves his westerns got his own tablet, DVD player to watch westerns his favorites The Duke John Wayne and Gun Smoke and so many others of the 1930 to 1975.
This brings back so many memories, My mother and I used to watch this all the time growing up. I'm a huge fan of westerns. Thanks so much Adam for this Video. It really made me emotional 😢💜
If that’s your picture you can’t be much older than 20 and beautiful too! Go to Ross Paterson here on TH-cam and watch all the old gunsmoke with Chester, Doc, Miss. Kitty and I saved the best for last, Marshall Dillon!
I can always count on you to explore so many amazing places of my favorite tv shows!! A big fan of Gunsmoke!! Another one was Wagon Train!! Thanks to U-tube I get to watch them! Thankful modern technology!! Have a terrific Thursday Adam!
Obviously everyone has different taste, but to me this is some of the most beautiful Americana landscapes............. great job capturing the amazing beauty.
Gunsmoke filmed about 30 episodes in the Kanab area. The Johnson Canyon movie set was built in 1952 for the MGM film with Robert Taylor called "Westward the Women". It was used for many other feature films and TV shows. It was never Dodge City, but was always used for another "town" when the script called for it. In 1971 (season 17, episode 3 & 4) they filmed Waste: part 1 & 2 with guest stars Ellen Burstyn and Johnny Whitaker. Also the same year (season 17, episode 11) Drago with guest star Buddy Ebsen.
Love that intro at the gas station its the daily woooooo!!! Always puts a smile on my face !!! love watching your past travels always a great watch adventure!!! You are a great entertainer thanks for all you do for us its well appreciated safe travels take care my brother!!!!
Adam , you find some of the most interesting things . I love when you go to the abandoned film sets .I didn't watch too many Gun Smoke Shows , but I remember my grandfather , my dad , and my husband watching it pretty often . I remember my dad's favorite saying was , ( get out of Dodge ) . lol !! That's cool that you found the built where Clint Eastwood played in the movie Josey Wales. My dad looked so much like him . Right after my dad passed away in 1979 . I was at my grandparents house and I saw a newspaper on the kitchen table with a picture of Clint Eastwood in it , but I thought it was a picture of my dad . My mom said , no honey that's not your dad . Thanks for sharing Adam !
Also Adam, there was something I wanted to ask you . Have you ever been to an abandoned house down in Florida , it was a house built by Frank Lloyd Wright . I saw a blog were 2 guys went in it and it was at one time a gorgeous house . Those other 2 guys that made a blog about it said it was haunted . I started watching a few more blogs about Frank Wright . There was one vlog I found and I thought of you . The tour guide was showing one of the Frank Wright homes and right before he went in , he asked the tourist if they had ever seen the movie , Back to the Future ? He meant they were fixing to step back in time. That blog was called , Meyer S May House Real USA EP. 65 . Just in case you wanted to check it out . If or when you go back to FL. I wish you would go to that abandoned house . I really think you would do a better job at making it more interesting and I was thinking while I was watching the other guys do their blog . I bet if Adam made a blog about this he would do a better job . Just make sure you take someone with you . I know you don't like to step on anyone's toes , but I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask . Love you Adam the Woo....!!!!
Awesome find. I remember my grandmother always had westerns on, that and a couple of soap operas is all that she ever watched. The scenery is gorgeous. Stay Safe!
Good morning Adam, really enjoying these daily vlogs, especially when you visit abandoned places. If I may be so bold to suggest, walking around someplace like Hollywood in sneakers is fine. When you're out in the desert or up in the mountains you might consider more substantial foot ware, maybe a light weight hiking boot to protect the feet and a walking staff. The walking staff will give you balance if you're treading across something a bit sketchy or for poking at something before touching it. Have a beautiful day wherever you go, see you tomorrow. "COMMENTS OVER"
It is a little eerie to see the old locations of the bygone T V shows that I used to watch as a child, in innocence thinking that it was all real. Thank you Adam, long may you roam.
The original radio version of Gunsmoke starred William Conrad. You had to use the "Theater of the Mind" when listening to a radio show, but many of the first television shows used as their inspiration the popular shows on radio. No set but your mind was needed to create this image with William Conrad as Matt Dillon, Georgia Ellis as Miss Kitty, Parley Baer as Chester and Howard McNear as Doc Adams. John Mestin wrote most of the shows for both the radio and later television show. Sadly John Mestin is rarely mentioned.
Very cool vlog! I love the old westerns and Utah was John Ford's favorite place to film. Monument Valley is an amazing place to check out. Some of the movies filmed there are, Forest Gump, Back to the Future III, National Lampoon's vacation, Thelma & Louise, The Searchers, 2001 Space Odesy, Easy Rider, The Eiger Sanction, Once upon a time in the West, and Koyaanisqatsi, to name a few.
I was at the Kanab Movie Ranch back in the 1970s when it was still a functioning movie ranch, before Best Friend Animal Sanctuary was there.. There were about 20 different numbered locations, you drove from one to the next.. Josie Wales hadn't happened yet. Mackenna's Gold had filmed there 2 or 3 years earlier. Stayed at Parry Lodge in town, a great historic hotel. Kanab was a great little town back then. Like everywhere else they've destroyed it, couldn't wait to get out the last time I was there, the traffic, the congestion. Further east was Paria Canyon where they built a little town when the Rat Pack made Sergeants 3 there. I went there too, it was about 10 miles down a dirt road. Vandals burned it down eventually and then they rebuilt it and a flash flood wiped it out again. I think there's nothing there now..
You should visit Bodie California. It's actually a real decaying old mining ghost town. But the state of California runs it as a park and keeps the buildings from falling to ruin, but also keeps them unrestored. I was definitely blow away by the size of the town and number of structures remaining. It is worth a look.
The rangers at Bodie are good about preventing vandalism, which as we saw here the vandals sawed off the top of the monument / tower. . . . . Bodie is great.
hey Adam.....I'm curious to know if Commando Arnold and Woo-braham Lincoln are still around for your RV adventures? I know they could be troublesome at times........
Thanx Adam, nice to see where you go.....when you think about it, there were probably hundreds maybe even thousands of cowboy/western tv series, and movies filmed over the years at many of these locations, even if it was maybe just bits and pieces.....
"Woodyoncp," don't get too excited because out of 630 shows over 20 years, 'Island in the Desert, Part 2' was the only one to film there, in the series' final season. And this old ghost town was called by the guest actor Ten Strike; it was never Dodge City, "Gunsmoke"'s town.
I imagine that the Utah locations were used in Gunsmoke for locations outside of Dodge City or when they needed a set that wasn't usually seen. When the show became more popular the budget was probably expanded so they could afford to shoot on location. you can always tell when a tv show is on location vs a set because of the lighting. On location is always brighter and sunnier.
7:22 - I believe, upon further inspection of this photo, this is Doc's Office and the stairs leading up to his Office. I love the show Gunsmoke. It has everything a good television show should have. At times, it is extremely funny!! All in all, it was meant to be Dramatic. The first season is the only season I know of where the exteriors of Dodge City were filmed on location. After the first season was finished filming, all Dodge City exteriors from that point on where filmed on a sound stage.
Are you able to make out the name on the front of the building? I've tried to make it out but I can't. It may very well be the location where doc lived.
Adam! I notice you were little behind this morning getting today's video. First time I've ever keep refreshing the page . Watch u everyday . Keep on keeping on
I thought you might appreciate a little additional information regarding the movie set on Johnson Canyon Rd outside Kanab Utah. We're no experts on the subject & may be misinformed but the way we understand it the movie set was built for the 1951 movie "Westward the Women" with Rod Taylor. It was used for numerous other movies including 1958 "Fort Dobbs" with Clint Walker & 1962 "Sergeants 3" with the "Rat Pack". By the time "Gunsmoke" started using it for location filming the movie set was already a wreck & was often used as a ghost town. It appears numerous times in different Gunsmoke episodes, our favorite 1974 "Island in the Desert" featuring Festus & Strother Martin. In Part 2 that ends up in a ghost town we believe was this Johnson Canyon movie set. We don't believe it was ever used as "Dodge ", that we're guessing was a movie set in Hollywood. Figuring this movie set was over 20 years old when Gunsmoke was filmed there it seems apparent it would make for a good ghost town. If you see any ghost town in any western look for the red rock buttes off in the distance & the farm land around it, chances are its Johnson Canyon. Again this is what we have learned & apologize for any wrong info - Esther & Glenn
Very cool finds and to know the real filming locations are not all north of Hollywood in Thousand Oaks. One more heavy snow and that one place will be down! Gorgeous country out there 💘
My favorite is when they show people going to a house. The person answers the door, but then you see them enter from inside of the house. The camera man must have come in through the back door.
If you want to see the most filmed location in the history of movies go to Lone Pine, Ca. You're heading back to L.A., take US 395 south. You'll be following the east side of the Sierra mountain range...beautiful country. At Lone Pine you will be in direct view of Mt. Whitney the highest mountain in the 48 continental states. All the big-time movie stars stayed there while filming.
Kanab, UT, has only two location listings in Gunsmoke's IMDB listing. Arizona has exactly 1 dozen. There is also one listing for South Dakota. The rest are all LA.
This is one of those videos you think... hmm what do I care about this topic... then I watch and become fascinated. You do a very awesome job with that!
Some GUNSMOKE 1960's episodes were filmed at APACHE LAND movie studios just outside of Phoenix Arizona. OUTLAW JOSEY WALES was partly filmed at Mescal western Set in Mescal , Arizona ( southeast of OLD TUCSON Studios )
What boggles the mind is the fact that so many Filming locations and set get abandoned and just left behind. Like the M*A*S*H* filming site. Where they left vehicles and stuff. There was also an Island or something that they just left everything there. Great VLOG and Excellent scenery.
Good Morning, Adam! You are traveling through some beautiful mountain scenery! Did you know that actor James Arness, who played Marshall Matt Dillon also played the role of the monster alien in the original sci-fi horror movie, "The Thing From Another World" (1951) ?
PS: Gas is $2.79 a gallon! The cheapest gas I have found so far here in New Jersey is $2.21 a gallon. By the way, "Gunsmoke" comes on INSP every morning at 9:00 am EST right after my favorite western show, "The High Chapparal."
Those buildings are like you walked into an actual town of the 1800's. The ruins of. 07:25 Great to see the photo of where you had just been to. Of how it was before ruins. I like the old cottage/place & barn for the outlaw Josey Wales and the cemetery. Beautiful scenery in that canyon. I remember "The Lone Ranger". & you're awesome :)
Lol your amazing Adam I've never been a fan of westerns and you had even me really intrigued! Keep up the awesome vids and I hope your having a fun time on your trip 🙂 P.S. lol I'm also glad to know I'm not the only one who uses the expression holy cow 😂
Kanab Utah is a beautiful place. I'm glad you got the check out Johnson Ranch before there's nothing left. Looks like the cows are on vacation. Side Note - If you're coming through Nevada you may want to check out Tom Devlins Monster Museum in Boulder City.
+Aimless Adventures it was a cool spot . The cows were shifted to another field . I'm on a mission now to find which episodes were actually shot there . Not many from what I can tell
Guest 28-Sep-2014 00:11 It was never used as Dodge City. The Drago episode was done here and one other with Festus, It was also used in an episode of the Macahans. Also Alan Ladd in The Rebel. It was built in part for Westward the Women with Robert Taylor.
Let the Columbo like research skills begin . If anyone can match up specific gunsmoke episodes to the location shown I'd really like to know the season and episode number .
TheDailyWoo I found out that most of the outside shots were there it was built for gunsmoke
That was really interesting. Sad that these structures are left to the elements.
Contact the Boothill museum in Dodge City Kansas. I think they have a book about the shooting locations.
TheDailyWoo it's a breeding ground for tranks, lobos and zipheads
hey Adam i had a look on westernstv.com - just at random picked - series 4 esp 15 - it looks very similar to that place, a few exterior shots, gotta be around that time frame (series wise) maybe?
We are Soo addicted to Gunsmoke! Since the COVID-19, most show’s stopped production. So we started watching Gunsmoke, and now a year later, it is still our go to show! Love it!!
You've excellent taste in programming, Sharon Douvikas! The true test will be if you choose to continue after pandemic is past. I'd wager you will.

Until the day he passed there wasn't a single time you could hand him the remote and not end up watching a Western. Fond memories.
+Ruthy D those are the best kinda memories . Something about those old westerns Make me happy
Ruthy D That's interesting how they showed them there and how he was interested in them!
My dad was really into westerns, too. After a while,I got tired of them.
As a kid, I had no interest in the western "horse opera" tv shows or movies...later on got into the Wild Wild West reruns, then other old shows like Bonanza and Gunsmoke....been marathon watching Gunsmoke episodes on youtube for the first time
Ruthy D our fore father's, had a wonderful view of life

Kanab, UT, has only two location listings in Gunsmoke's IMDB listing. Arizona has exactly 1 dozen. There is also one listing for South Dakota. The rest are all LA.
Amazing video Adam, thank you. Ps. Please be careful when entering those locations. Take care.
This is one of those videos you think... hmm what do I care about this topic... then I watch and become fascinated. You do a very awesome job with that!
This was awesome! I'd love to check this out someday, hopefully before it's gone. Great video as usual Adam! 👍🤠
Filming location and an abadoned place!! Impressive mix of goodness Adam!!
Adam, just a fun fact. The submarine that you visited in Georgia is only about a mile from where i live. No Columbo Like Research Skills done there.
Gunsmoke episode "Drago" with Buddy Ebsen was one that was filmed here. Also one where Festus was help captive.
Be careful in old buildings they would never find you if you got hurt :0 great video Adam
What boggles the mind is the fact that so many Filming locations and set get abandoned and just left behind. Like the M*A*S*H* filming site. Where they left vehicles and stuff. There was also an Island or something that they just left everything there. Great VLOG and Excellent scenery.
Hey howdy hey! We've started watching while we wait for the school drop off line. My kiddo loves it.
Several John Ford Westerns - including The Searchers - which also shot in the Batman Cave at Griffith park
Mr. Woo, how do you find all these great spots. For example yesterday how did you know the dragon was under the bridge?
Good Morning, Adam! You are traveling through some beautiful mountain scenery! Did you know that actor James Arness, who played Marshall Matt Dillon also played the role of the monster alien in the original sci-fi horror movie, "The Thing From Another World" (1951) ?
PS: Gas is $2.79 a gallon! The cheapest gas I have found so far here in New Jersey is $2.21 a gallon. By the way, "Gunsmoke" comes on INSP every morning at 9:00 am EST right after my favorite western show, "The High Chapparal."
Pamela Kelly love the theme song to high chapperal
Pamela Kelly I paid $2.09 today😁
Nice to see the old movie location.
Lots of film history.
Great video, love the topic of today's vlog.
Good day Adam, Best part of THEE vlog are the Beautiful mountains and surrounding back grounds. H.A.G.D
Man, must be nice traveling the roads in a camper!...just you and the rode ahead, being able to stop at will.
Another excellent video.
awesome vlog, I for one really love the movie location videos.
Great vid !!
Lol your amazing Adam I've never been a fan of westerns and you had even me really intrigued! Keep up the awesome vids and I hope your having a fun time on your trip 🙂
P.S. lol I'm also glad to know I'm not the only one who uses the expression holy cow 😂
Set was possibly used in an episode titles "drago". Not sure I'm reading about it
Kanab Utah is a beautiful place.

It was never used as Dodge City. The Drago episode was done here and one other with Festus, It was also used in an episode of the Macahans. Also Alan Ladd in The Rebel. It was built in part for Westward the Women with Robert Taylor.
