@@FishinwithSquirrel Cool. Both my rudder and Skeg not going down well. I have to feed cord into the tube to make it go down. Will take it apart and see how it go when I have some down time. :)
@@FishinwithSquirrel Took the skeg out then found a lot of sand and debris stuck in there. Also fount there is a slight wear out and something look like crack (hope not) where rudder cord is running. BTW, snapped 2 screws mounting Skeg too. LOL
Thank you thank you thank youHello I bought a used PA 14 2016 the rudder and skeg are both stiff but when i unscrewed the cover for half moon I notice the black cord cut deep in to the kayak what should I do???!
The plastic tubing that I used is still working and protecting the kayak. I wouldn’t worry about trying to fill the hole. The pa’s have drain plugs and you wouldn’t hardly get water in there anyway. You could use some hot glue I guess. I would just make sure it didn’t cut anymore.
great video, assume it all worked out well now? funnily enough... i bought a 2015 pa12 yesterday and found this problem too... Skeg wasn't deploying fully... Hobie Technical notes indicates I need to relocate the hole (it's different spot from the post 2015's)... but I might try this first to see if it works as i can feel tension on the line at the turning point. If no luck will do both. Thanks again for the video!
@@FishinwithSquirrel maiden voyage on the weekend, worked well. Only thing I'd change is to a more rigid tubing as it's deforming under tension - probably more of an issue over time. On the Hobie forums someone using Teflon tubing and copper pipe.. will look around!
So does the rope for your skeg go into the kayak? Or is it just stuck in the stowed position? Like is the rope and pull handle stuck on top? I had the same problem with the rudder cable and if that is the case for you, the fix is embarrassing and simple.
The rope for the SKEG was stuck in the stowed position. It releases now that I made the modifications. Please share any recommendations you may have if there are any other fixes. I searched TH-cam and couldn’t find anything. Thank you!🐿
@@FishinwithSquirrel so for me it was the cleats on top. There is a notch that the rope has to be pulled into for the rope to release. Otherwise the teeth on the cleat never let's go. For whatever reason I was pulling my right arm different than my left so it never got put into the groove. Took me 3 trips to figure it out. Sounds like that was not your issue but it was definitely mine!
The cleat wasn’t my issue but that is a great tip for trouble shooting the problem. Has your chords cut grooves in your Kayak? I’m sure it is super thick there but I just didn’t like the idea of the notch being cut. I also considered waxing the chord. I haven’t tried that yet.
@@FishinwithSquirrel I came across your video because I too just bought a used 2017 PA 14. I don’t have this issue but I’m working on refurbishing it. So I’m looking at all kinds of repair videos and forums. Good luck!
The modification is still working. My SKEG will deploy and retract now. I haven’t pulled the back cover plate off to see how the plastic tube is holding up. Soon as I do, I’ll post another video. Thanks for watching 🐿
I'm glad I found this. I am having the same issues you had and I will be implementing fixes asap. Well done and thanks for posting this video!
Thanks a million, this solves my problem with my skeg, it’s a 2016, in 2023. I stopped using it but this brought life to it.
Glad it helped you out. Thanks for watching!🐿
I have the same problem on my 2017 PA, I’m going to try the same remedy, I appreciate the video, it was very informative and well done! Thank you!
I have the same issue with my Pa 12 ..Awesome idea .Thank you so much .Tight lines people 👍😁👍
it’s 3 am and i watch your video i hope your happy
I commented on your comment I hope you are happy
We had a similar issue with our Hobie Holder 14 sailboat. Replaced the spring and reworked the lines and it was fine.
Good solution here
I may have to replace that spring as well. Good stuff, thanks Dan👍🐿
hope Hobie engineers are watching. For the $$$, you'd think they'd correct this design flaw. Informative video, thank you.
Thanks for watching Mav! 👍🐿
Bloody genius I have the same same prob with my PA14
It’s worked so far, at least I’m not cutting my kayak in half anymore. 🐿
I have the same issue on my 2015 PA14. I will try to see if it fix my problem too. Thank you for the video. :D
Mine isn’t perfect but it will actually deploy now,. Let me know how yours turns out.

@kihoons_life breaking off two screws sounds like my luck. Hope you get it fixed and back on the water soon! 🐿
Thanks for the video man, i have the same issue, hopefully this will help me out, couldn’t find any othe video on youtube so thanks a lot!
Thanks for watching. Hope you get your Kayak up and going soon! 🐿
Nice job and explanation bud.
Thank you Freddie! 👊🐿

Did you reach out to a dealer or anything? I came across a forum post that said theres supposed to be inserts where it’s cutting into the hull.
I bought my hobie used. I will contact a local dealer now. Thanks for the information!🐿
