T1N Windshield Rust Remove Repair Replace

  • One common issue with our T1N Sprinter vans is rust around the windshield. Often this starts with a windshield replacement scratching the paint and some companies won't replace the glass if rust will break the new glass. I'll show you what I did to fix this area and treat it so the repair lasts as long as I can get. I did some things wrong, and hopefully you will learn form my mistakes and save yourself some trouble.

    Hi, I see you've done a few of these windscreens, welcome to the club I'm now redoing mine for the third time. The first time I replaced the 11mm bullet proof one (ex:met police dog van) because it was to big for the standard seal (4mm) after a screen out respray then 1 year later I noticed and heard the lower half of the screen rattling so out it came again repainted refitted by professionals? Another year top corner came loose so out it came full rust treatment. What I did notice is that the sealant came out with the paint attached, so this time I intend to bond it straight to the bare metal and rustproof up to the bonding strip and remove the outer strip of rubber edging which in my mind only holds the water and traps the crap . I will probably run a bead of sealant around the edge. Anyway good luck with yours. Thanks for the video's. Regards Martin in the UK.

    Dipping the blade in diesel or kerosene helps reduce the friction too. Im gonna be dojng another one soon, ive been meaning to try silicon spray, but it might be bad, it can leave a residue that mihht make new window sealant not stick right.

    When it rains, the water piles up at the injectors, does that also happen at your van? I have no rust under the windshield and no black injector cover so I can keep an eye on the black death. I blow the water away with compressed air each time it rained.

      We've seen this. The seal along top of hood is bent. You can get some 2x4s in there and pry up the lip that holds the rubber strip. But get an engine cover on there too. Used ones can be found cheap-ish.

      It is a stiff plastic sheet I cut to fit inside the windshield. I've used it several times, as you can tell from the paint colors on it. It keeps MOST of the sanding dust out of the van. We have seen too many vans come home from "the body shop" with sanding dust inside the radio, fuse box, and even caked half inch thick in the dash speakers. Apparently body shops let ALL the dust fall into the dashboard!!! Not me.

      I have one of those wires with a handle on each end. I couldn't make a video about it because it made me cuss too much. LOL I'm pretty sure the difficulty I've had removing the windshields has everything to do with the amount of glue used by the previous replacement installer. None of these vans have the original factory windshield, and as we see in the video, installers don't all do it right. Hahaha That was an understatement, huh?

      @@FloridaVanMan better too much silicone than too less. I had a windscreen fitted and few months later I tried to put a license disk sticker on the inside and pressed the sticker and my windscreen pushed out. 🙃 I called the guy back and he redid it correctly. Welding back is beyond my skill level and probably most of our viewers also, so I don't cut out what I can't put back. I grind and treat with OSPHO to hold back the rust as long as I can with the skills I have. If you would like to teach me the next level Come On Down! :)

    Hi Florida van man. I haven't seen my T1N since before Covid as I had to fly to my home country. Before I left, I had pulled out the front two seats and removed the seatbelts during a conversion. After nearly 2 years, I would have absolutely nfi how to reinstall these with the right components. If you ever have to remove seats or seatbelts, would you consider making a video?

    • @FloridaVanMan
      @FloridaVanMan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I offer 1on1 coaching assistance via video call, email with photos and videos, etc. Seatbelts can mount on the seat, the seat base, or on the B-pillar. This is a user choice and rarely matters unless you have swivel seats. If you have any questions when you get there, drop me a note. Safe travels...

      Nothing specific for T1N’s out there unfortunately. Your options are the generic Thule Van lock sliding mechanism or any type of Hasp lock. Most I’ve seen on T1N’s used for business have Masterlock hasp and puck locks

    Looks like where he connected the urethane bead at the top of the glass is where it was leaking from. Plus you don’t install urethane set glass in the rain. Big no no.

    • @FloridaVanMan
      @FloridaVanMan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, It leaked where his left reach meets his right reach and rain was undoubtedly the immediate cause. The real* problem was him showing up at 9:15 pm for a 4 o'clock appointment. It wasn't raining until 8pm.

      @@FloridaVanMan I had the problem where the windshield was ready to pop out on its own, just a push would send it out. Rain pouring into the cab while driving.. Went to the glass install shop and could tell right away that i needed to do this job myself as no one would repair the rust for me. Was able to purchase the glass myself and bring it to my dads garage. I think i did a pretty good job of grinding out and treating the rust. Except i was pressed for time, did all of it in one day in the winter (pennsylvania, in an unheated garage, tho i did bring a propane heater to help) install of the new glass was not hard. i cant believe they did that in the rain. thats nuts. A year after i installed the glass i was in a parking lot trying to install new wiper blades and i dropped some stuff and went to pick it up and WHACK, the bare wiper arm came down and cracked the windshield. A year after that now and the cracks have gone all over the windsheild so i have to do this job over, also, i have a new, rusty sprinter im working on as well, so 2 windshields are on the list.
