This franchise is actually pretty impressive at this point in time because this one and the next are both Live-Action movie Debuts for their directors.
This was JJ Abrahams first big budget movie as he was more a director for TV before this movie. Tom Cruise actually brought him on board.
The next one is directed by Brad Bird who only directed animated movies before. He directed quite a few classics most notably for this context The Incredibles from Pixar.
I do think MI is at a very good point now but I also do miss this era where they changed the director and style for each movie and even took some big risks with their choice of the director

    • @aarons.2323
      @aarons.2323 ปีที่แล้ว +2

That's what I miss, too. I even remember Tom saying earlier on that was the whole point of the franchise. However, after this one it definitely seemed like they found a groove that worked for them, and the tone doesn't change at all from this point forward, really. Ghost Protocol just had to prove that the series was still a viable franchise, because 3 didn't do that great because Tom Cruise was acting pretty weird during the promotion of this movie and I think it turned a lot of people away (the Oprah couch jump, most notably). After that I think the series has found the characters we all like, and knows exactly what we want from these movies as a whole: Crazy stunts, Tom Cruise running, enjoyable supporting characters, some emotional stakes, and a nice bow wrapped around it all at the end.

MI3 gave us two of the best Returning characters in Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg but I think the interrogation/Mask Pull in this was one of the most underrated scenes in the series because it's truly the only moment in the series where Ethan had no tricks to pull out and was truly at the mercy of a great villian.

Just had to pause midway to comment how much I'm enjoying yer enthusiasm during this watchalong, so thanks for that.
Fun fact: that opener with Davian wasn't originally there, the movie originally started with the house party... at some point, wanting a bit more oomph for the opener, they just outright grabbed that chunk of a scene and plopped it at the beginning. The amazing thing is that the script/dialogue still plays out perfectly, untouched.

The windmill scene was filmed at the wind farm outside of Palm Springs CA. And they flew real helicopters insanely close to real windmills. But not close enough for the intent of the shot so there are a handfull that were added in with VFX (CG and practical models). If you want to see some truly insane stuff, look into the hollywood helicopter pilots. They fly the camera choppers, often a mere 10 ft above the ground, down city streets, under overpasses, etc to get the most ridiculously awesome shots. Most of them are veterans who flew in various wars and they operate WAY WAY outside of the normal FAA safety laws in terms of how low and how close to things they are allowed to fly. Several of them have instagram accounts they post to regularly.

Until the Craig Bond movies they didn't mention a past love interest that was in previous movies. Because they made it a part of his character.

That "in medias res" tactic used at the start of the movie is a JJ Abrams staple. He used it constantly throughout Alias and Lost so its really no surprise he used it here. I always found it to be a cheap tactic to get the audience's interest since it blows what comes later.
One other thing: for the third straight Mission Impossible movie, they used the IMF traitor as the primary villain. First it was Jim Phelps. Then it was Ambrose. And now it was Billy Crudup, albeit this time he was the "misguided patriot" trope. Fortunately this was the last time they used that idea in the franchise.
Still it was a fun movie overall.

J.J. Abrams, from years of working behind the scenes on many projects to getting major shine with television (Felicity, Lost & Alias) and co-writing Armageddon (no.1 film of 1998).
M-I:3 is his directorial film debut and his first of 3 sequels as an producer.
Because M-I:2, despite it's success was considered the weakest and a new direction had to be set onward.
So M-I:3 is direct sequel to the first film and just as good, beat for beat.
Stakes have certainly grown higher as The late Philip Seymour Hoffman is incredibly vicious as Davien.
Hunt and co. still defy the odds even when his potential marriage is in danger.
All over the place and just an incredible sequel.
From here on out, every mission connects.
4-6 are really going to blow your mind.

To answer your question about them cutting away when they put on the Davian disguise before the party at the Vatican: They put the latex mask on and the camera moved behind Luther which is where the cut happened. But they CG'd Hoffman's face to make the eyes and face a bit droopy, as well as the neck prosthetic.

Some fun stunt facts for you:
In the first Mission: Impossible, Tom Cruise had to use coins in his shoes to balance out his weight to keep from touching the floor during the wire stunt in CIA Headquarters
In Mission: Impossible II, that is really Tom Cruise doing free rock climbing
In this movie, the pendulum swing was done in a sound stage where he jumped 40ft off a platform to perform the swing.
The guy is a madman, but it makes for great scenes.

While I don't think this one is the best out of the whole franchise MI3 is my personal favorite. Growing up I didn't have cable so this movie along with some others were on constant repeat in my house. This movie is always very nostalgic for me😊

If the start of the movie was instead Ethan interrogating Davian on the plane, and it cut to opening titles before we find out if Ethan cuts him loose, do you think that would make a better film?
It's not my idea I read a comment on a video of the scene, it does sound cool. The scene might not be the exact same, so cut up and shortened a bit.

MI3 is probably the most important one in the series as it really set the tone and narrative style of all those that have followed. Also it had to up the game because MI2 had a fair bit of negativity about it after people had time to reflect upon it. If MI3 failed that would have been the end.

The scene with the wind turbines was partially filmed out by Palm Springs, CA, while I was living near there, and I drove by the location while they were shooting. It was too far away for me to make anything out, so I didn't know what all the lights were until later.

Saw this in a drive in, and thought the stakes were really high. I think Jen would like the TV series: ALIAS, which JJ Abrams was responsible for and is in this general genre (unless you've seen it already).

You guys really should watch The Ghost and the Darkness. It's a true (though dramatized) story about animals eating people, which is objectively the best movie genre. Plus, it's peak Val Kilmer.

Great reaction! Dw I also laughed when the chip detonated in the agent's head. I wish they hadn't made it look so goofy cos it undercut the drama of the moment. Just normal dead eyes would have been fine!
