interesting you mention divergent in vid early on cause its also the sign and fire that started the decline of YA book to movies. the last book was changed to be direct to video only which all the main actors left cause if do those thjen thats instant death of their career on big screen (either way most werent seen again) and that caused chain reaction. other producers decided to cut back or leave from ya films to i think mortal engines was the last nail on the coffin with also covid lockdown coming up at the time.
12:20 "reminds me of squid game" lol with kids you got your gonna regonize the battle royale genre almost 24/7 if they play it and/or know of it. the first mainstream battle royale game was literally the name itself battle royale from japan which was a manga then got a live action adaptation in early 2000s. basic premise is troublemaker kids taken to island to kill each other and survivor walks free and ppl watch it as entertainment. so side reminder: remember ro parents that read this, fortnite and hunger games roots is about kids encouraged to become killers and be celebrities :) i may get auto deleted for going into this part: i would not be surprised either america, japan or whoever will make a manga/comic, show or movie of taking mass shooter attempters/threatners and even hoaxers in a battle royale situation. let them attempt to kill one another, bonus the hosts with twisted views shove in citizens not viable to society (no skills, not paying taxes, or heck the parents themselves) in there as bonus points to the person if they kill them and get supplies dropped in. interestingly that will trigger varies ppl, one be the parents but what really triggers them is idea is punishing the parents by forcing them into that ring and get killed by those shooters with one of them is their own child. even further if parent beg saying its not their fault their kid is like that to twist that blade even more. if a book/film like that was made for sure its gonna cause ALOT of drama and talking about it depending on the subject, who it spotlights and how they make those ppl act in it.
Which even if you didn't read the books (which I didn't for years), is obvious. The mystery at not knowing where the others are and what advantages they have is part of what makes the games scary & keeping the audience in the dark is a great move.
So the people rebelling after Rues death (apart that it was not in the books) was not so much about Rue dying (like you said happens every year), it’s that Katniss showed empathy for her. Panem works by keeping the districts divided, cutting communications between them and in the games, having them as enemies. So it’s Katniss having respect for Rue that tipped them off. I think
Exactly, it doesn't really make sense. It was put it in the movie because they weren't sure if they were going to get a chance to adapt the second and third books. This same scene is actually from the second book.
When Jen asked at the beginning if there will only be one winner, should have just said yes. The Hunger Games is only supposed to have one winner. Kind of opens up the viewer to the idea they can both win when you are supposed to think there's no chance until Seneca changes the rules.
Actually, the author Suzanne Collins said she was inspired to write the books when she saw the juxtaposition of people living normal lives on tv/reality shows and then she’d change the channel to see horrors of the war in Iraq. That’s why you see that stark contrast between the suffering of the districts vs the lavish lives of the wealthy in the Capitol. And that’s why the sequels explore the themes of war, propaganda and rebellion.
And they have a whole scene showing him talking to all those people, a spoon-fed extra explaination scene these two apparently love to reinforce the dialogue explanation at the beginning of the movie.
So at the end with the berries. What Peeta and katniss were doing by threatening suicide by nightlock berry is that they were committing an act of rebellion. They were exploiting the fact that the Games and the government always need a victor and using it against them. It was all on camera in front of all the districts showing everyone that its possible to fight the capitol and win. The fall out of showing that to the citizens of Panem is coming in the sequels.
That was one partial loop hole that was always at the back of my mind, I can't imagine in 74 hunger games that there was always a victor, I mean when two people are killing each other even if one is able to finish off the other they can quite easily be mortally wounded and die anyway in the exchange.
@@SGz_Eliminated because of the close monitoring i'd assume they'd be able to get a medical team in very quickly to ensure that didn't happen. Regardless, none of that would be a result of flagrantly disobeying the rules like katniss and peeta were doing.
@@SGz_EliminatedWe hear more about the incredible medical ability the capitol has in the books. Peeta is way more broken and is “put back together” by the capitol. So with that in mind it mostly makes sense though you still have a point. I mean what happened to Haymitch in his games is one kind of loophole that did happen.
Fun fact: In the books, the dogs that chased them in the finale were the tributes who died in the arena. The had similar traits such as fur color=being their hair color, same with eye color
@@Kyzen_Wrell I think it was something like they put their brains into the dog's bodies or something like that, because Katniss stated in the books not only did the dogs look human, they even acted a bit human too because they were standing up on their hind legs same way a person would
this is just what katniss wondered could be true, because of how similar they looked. remember she is not always a reliable narrator. it was likely just a tactic to upset the remaining tributes. earlier in the books she explains how the dead tributes bodies are shipped back home. it’s unlikely they would tamper with them without causing an upset, which they also do not want.
CATCHING FIRE IS SO GOOD, can’t wait till you get to MJ1&2 as well. You mentioned you don’t feel like more movies were needed, oh boy you’re so wrong. LOTS OF LOVE
@FelipeCRC I've watched tons of reactions to this series and Catching Fire is universally agreed upon as being tiers above the other films, absolute banger sequel that deepens the plot and raises the stakes exponentially.
Regarding getting picked, the year you turn 12 you get your name put in once. Second year it's two and so on. In addition you can trade rations for having your name added once per person (a year I believe). That's how Gale had his name in 42 times, 27 times because of his age, and the rest was rations for his family (mentioned in the book but not the movie).
The system that determines how many times someone’s name is in the pot was one of the more significant details in the book that the movie didn’t have enough time to fully explain.
In the book they could put their name in multiple times, and Gayle had a big family so he had done multiple entries each year in order to provide for them with the extra supplies.
The possibility is mentioned briefly in the movie just in the goodbye scene after Katniss volunteers. Katniss tells Prim not to take food from them because it’s not worth putting her name in more times. I’ve seen other reactors notice and understand that’s why Gale’s name was in so many times.
I believe the sponsor gifts weren't given directly from the mentor. His role is to be like a lobbyist and convince the people with money to sponsor/send gifts to the tributes he oversees.
It also becomes a very important moment in leading up to many of the events that happen in the sequels because it’s really the first time that someone in Katniss and Peeta’s position has publicly stood up to the Capital by refusing to play by the Capital’s rules and won.
In the book Katniss actually does see Gale as only a friend you’re right about that part, but she knows that he likes her since they’ve known each other for forever. And about Peeta I believe she’s conflicted. She doesn’t exactly like him but she knows he’s kind since he helped her not starve that time by purposely burning a bread and tossing it out. He got a beating from his family for that… so she feels something but it’s not love. More than anything it’s survival and playing into the star crossed lovers role they had going on. IM EXCITED TO CONTINUE WATCHING YOUR REACTIONS☺️🫰🏻!!!🫶🏻
She did not know he liked her this book. It wasnt until she played the romance part in the games & see that openly from Peeta she started realizing Gale might like her that way. Gale obviously has regret that he didn't act before she was sent off to die so that's why besides jealousy seeing her with Peeta he is more open going forward.
Katniss definitely the epitome of a strong female heroine. Yes she’s got grit and survival skills and she can handle a bow and arrow but what makes her amazing is her heart. Most people especially from the first districts see the hunger games as a mark of honor others like those from district 12 see it as a civic duty you dread. Katniss willingly steps up to save her sister. As the game goes on she not only survives even by killing others it shows she doesn’t enjoy doing it. And Rue Katniss showing compassion and mourning her death shows that as vile as the games are she doesn’t lose herself to it.
Note on the idea of this film staying as a single movie, this came out in 2012 while the final book was published in 2010 so the sequels had already been written. I would really encourage that you guys read the books after the films, it fills in a lot of gaps and the story makes a lot more sense and enhances the films significantly.
To answer the question at the feast: No, there is no rule saying you can only take one bag. But if you arrive first and take all the bags, everybody else will go after you to get their own bags back. If you take only your bag the others have to secure their own bags first before they start hunting you, so you have a much better chance of getting away.
And it did. It shows Gale realizing he most likely lost his chance because she may die & becoming aware he messed up. After basically playing a romantic part in the games I think Katniss is realizing Gale has looked at her the way Peeta does & she is now really confused about caring for her best and only real friend.
fun little piece of info: author suzanne collins apparently originally wrote that gale was katniss' cousin but her publishers wanted her to make a love triangle for some reason so she had to change it.
I love all of the films but the second one is by far my favorite. Can't wait to see how you guys feel about it! And to Jenn's point about the capital caving over the berries, it's mostly that the head game maker Seneca caved, and thats why later he is locked in a room with the berries. Implying he is not leaving alive for failing to keep them in line.
As a fan of the novels The Hunger Games films does a great job adapting the Book to Movie adaption. Even though there's some little changes, but overall I feel like the filmmakers did a great job making the movies as close to the source material as possible. I'm glad y'all decided to react to this series! Can't wait for Catching Fire because that's my all time favorite novel and movie.
As for the love triangle the bottom line is the boys love katniss and she has never even considered love. In the book his highlighted how gale/liam being like her, looking as a sibling and sharing her negative view of the world. Peeta/Josh is described as Prim, basically the light and hope in katniss life.
Okay! As someone who has read the Hunger Games books A LOT there are a few key things to help you: -Firstly when it comes to the sponsors, not all of her gifts were sent from Haymitch as her mentor he just gets to control the flow of her gifts. So, basically the way I’ve always viewed it as is someone wants to sponsor a tribute so they sponsor them with X amount of money. The mentor then gets to decide what that money is used to send in for that tribute and when it’s sent. A change in the movies is that the mentor gets to include a note with the gift. Hence all of the gifts having a note from Haymitch for Katniss. -The reason that the Capitol backed down because of the berries is out of fear for a rebellion. They already have District 11 in open rebellion now if the Games end with no victor because these two children from District 12 decide to die rather than play the Capitol’s “game” how they want it to be played then why wouldn’t the other districts rebel as well? -Regarding Gale (Liam) in the first book it is made explicitly clear that Katniss views him as a friend. In fact it’s made clear that Katniss doesn’t really ever want to be with anyone because of the world that they live in. However, because of the “Star Crossed Lovers” act she has to play with Peeta she can’t help but compare it to Gale and what they could potentially have. I think that’s all (or at least what I can remember at this particular moment) I hope it helped! P.S. Are you guys only watching the original 4 movies or are you watching the prequel movie “Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” as well??
The sponsorship idea was a stroke a genius. It creates a situation where any tribute that wants a legitimate chance of surviving, they HAVE to play along during the lead-up to the games. Not only do you have to win in the arena, but you also have to win this weird game of self-promotion/marketing beforehand. It turned what potentially could have been an uninteresting section of the movie, waiting for the games to begin, into some of my favorite stuff in the whole film.
One thing I would like to mention that I do not know if someone has already mentioned, They do not translate the time period of the Hunger Games from the book to the movies. The movie feels like its over the period of a week where as in the Book it is over a month, I believe a month and a half (For the games alone), and the final tributes from 2 was still affected by the hornets which is what the female from two was going for at the "Feast" when Katnis went for Petas healing stuff. Regarding some of the other things you mentioned, the book is focused solely on Katniss so you never get any visual of the other tributes or outside the arena from the book, all that was added for the movie. Great movie, I hope you watch all the others
Catching fire is my favorite so looking forward to that... I like that you both point out that Katniss/Peeta arent really active in the killings because they arent murderers.... and how we watch this change throughout the sequels
Katniss does not have romantic feelings for either Peeta or Gale. Peeta has a deep crush on Katniss but he really openly confesses his feelings for her just to help create a public image of making Katniss desirable in front of the vain Capitol people coz he understands how to play the common people of the Capitol. Which is why Katniss gets the gifts in the arena, from the sponsors who Haymitch gathers to send help to Katniss. Peeta genuinely did not believe he could make it out of the arena and instead worked out the romance angle with Haymitch to help her. Gale on the other hand is also in love with Katniss but Gale is only seen as a brother by Katniss because they grew up together.
I would say she has slight romantic feelings for peeta in the first book/movie, but then she definitely does by the second book!/movie but can’t really focus on it because of all the other crap going on of course lol
that girl with the throwing knives had her neck broken, at least that's what i always assumed. he like slammed her head into the wall in a way that broke her neck.
@@andrewestrada250 he reacted like he didn't understand how she died. like he thought he just slammed her back into the wall and she died or something.
One thing to note. Most people who react seem to forget about sponsors. So when they criticize Peeta being able to camouflage himself by face painting a rock, you never know if sponsors gave him a mirror or something. After all, the sponsors did see him paint his whole arm completely camouflage
The whole love triangle thing is much more fleshed out in the books. Katniss and Gale are best friends. He is in love with her and protects her and her sister, but she does not have romantic feelings for him, but considers marrying him for stability. She pretends to love Peeta for the Games, but eventually does come to love him in her way.The author initially planned for Gale to be Katniss's cousin though, and the publishers pushed for the love triangle to appeal to the YA audience. Honestly I think it would have been better the way she intended!
"Why don't they just all run, or die their own way?" Because if everyone refuses to fight, or offs themselves, their families will be tortured and killed for their lack of "entertainment". Also, Foxface (the smart/ fast one) likely ended herself on purpose with the berries in the movie since it was just her and the titans left. She stood no chance in 1 v 1, even with her smarts and stealth, and likely knew there would be a culling tactic by the gamemakers with how long the game had been. Peeta made getting the berries easier, and all she had to do was swipe a handful and dies in seconds before anyone or anything could torture her. The berries kill in seconds as they are described to be so toxic they end you before they even hit your stomach. It was very different in the book, though, so I'm just saying this for the movie. The bonus for Foxface is that these berries look like blueberries, so she easily made it look like an accident so her family was spared.
PLEASE Jen!! You need to watch the other three. YOU NEED TO Once you start Catching Fire, you’ll see the improvement in everything + it gets darker and even more serious
The gifts Katniss got were from sponsors. The notes included were added by Haymitch. Also worth noting that, as the games continue on, the price that sponsors have to pay for gifts to send goes up.
They reverse the decision to have two victors in the end and don’t accept that both could die because they NEED a winner to generate hope for the audience. Otherwise, it would just be murder, and the viewers need something to root for. If no one won, then there would be a widespread rebellion, even in the Capitol. Peeta and Katniss are not murderers. Most of the tributes weren’t trained for the games; they’re just children trying to survive. That’s why she doesn’t go around killing others-she only does it when absolutely necessary. They are survivors, not fighters, and, besides, they are all still just children. 😉
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is my personal favorite. I saw it in theaters 5 times, and every time I did I noticed something different each time. Tom Blyth, Rachel Zegler, and Viola David were amazing. There is a new Hunger Games movie coming out in 2026. It is called, "Sunrise of the Reaping". It is about Haymitch, and how he won his Hunger Games.
Yo I have changed accounts so many times on TH-cam but I'm the guy that's been asking you react to the Hunger Games movies ever since you started watching movies with Jen I'm so happy you guys finally get to see one of my favorite film series of all time
Lord of the Rings is an incredibly high bar. I never watched lotr as a kid and i watched them AFTER i saw the Hobbit. The fact they were made so long ago is unbelievably impressive. I love the Hobbit series alot, and probably because i saw them first...
Ive never clicked on a video faster! I have been waiting for you guys to do the hunger games for so long. Its my favorite series. I hope you guys love it!
I mean the wasps things make sense because in real life different people have different tolerance to stuff like some get stung by a bee and are just fine some people are deathly allergic to bee stings and can die so they can get away with and they said ( in some cases death) so it wasn't sure thing it would kill them
But those aren’t normal wasps. Tracker jackers are another example of Mutts, genetically engineered animals created by the Capital’s scientists (usually designed to be much nastier and scarier than the real world animals they’re modified from) for the specific purpose of being used as obstacles for the Tributes to face in the Games. In the case of the Tracker Jackers, the poison from their stings is much more potent and lethal than a normal wasp’s. The death of the one girl killed by them was toned down considerably in the movie. If the condition of her body when Katniss got there to claim the bow and arrows had been as gruesome as it was described in the book, the image of that alone might’ve been enough to bump the movie up to an R rating.
My biggest gripe from the book is that Katniss is actually really clever, she's fending for herself in the woods but she needs water, she's dying of thirst. She spots a camera and she asks Haymitch to send her water. In the books we're in her mind so we understand her reasoning. She isn't really asking for water, she's asking if she's near water. If she's not he'll send her water, but as district 12 they have very limited resources in terms of sponsors, so if she's near water, he won't waste those resources on sending her water. I think just her living off the land and surviving in the forest in general could have been fleshed out, it's her one strength besides archery. She can hunt, she can hide, she has great sense of awareness and safety outdoors. Most of these other kids are bred for battle, or are just children with very specific skills like fishing, working in a bakery, working in the fields etc. She has been illegally hunting in the forest her whole life, she's basically on her home turf.
Every time I give this channel a chance your takes never fail to disappoint. Not everything has to be on screen & spoon-fed & over explained. The story is in first person, it's not following the other tributes to show what random stuff they got. There is zero reason to develop all the characters that are going to die, there's just too many. They also showed everyone getting a chance at a final item they all needed at the end anyway. Not knowing where the enemy is & what advantage they have is part of the horror of the games & the audience gets to experience that alongside Katniss. You totally missed the whole point of Haymitch schmoozing with people - its a main part of how sponsors work. He can try & get people to give more donations, request specific things, & he is the one that sends them and gives strategy advice. They aren't going to let every Cato or Rue fan for instance send them all the things they need. 1) the gifts are expensive even if small 2) the game makers do not want them to get too much help. That doesn't harm the structure at all. As for Gale, the feelings are one sided & neither has actually talked about it because most of their lives has been 1 thing - don't starve. Hence why it doesn't feel that way at the beginning - because it's not supposed to. You are just meant to get the sense they are best friends & the only people besides immediate family each other has. It's after playing a romantic part in the games Katniss realizes how Gale is looking at her in the way Peeta does and it shows she is beginning to realize. That will play a huge part going forward & it's not just about who wins the loce triangle but if you really know yourself & what you stand for in life because that will determine who you share your life with. Katniss is doesn't have many friends & they mentioned her basically not being likeable several times. This is why she is so nervous to be on stage with Caesar PLUS she is in a fancy expensive provocative dress (and she is still a very young girl) with heeled shoes that all probably cost more than her entire district takes home in a year, getting turned into FIRE. So yeah she isn't just twirling gracefully like a ballerina. She is awkward & doesn't like being the center of attention. The amount of times you both couldn't understand why so many of the kids didn't just magically start killing people was disturbing.
33:55 Yeah, in the book Peeta just buries himself in riverside mud and hides half in the water. Also, you're correct that Katniss and Peeta aren't killers by nature, so they usually try to do things in an indirect manner, such as blowing up the food and supplies the Career Pack were hording. As for why the Career Pack survived the tracker jackers, I think it's safe to assume that in that huge pile of supplies they secured, there might have been some sort of antivenom or medicine against the tracker jacker venom. We've seen how the medicine in this setting is advanced enough to heal wounds overnight, so it makes perfect sense.
I love their...casual strategizing of killing children. The tone changed real quick from "ohhh, poor kid, this is a sick movie" to "least she wont have to PUT HER DOWN LATER, probably the best outcome." 😅
PLEASE, I'M BEGGING YOU! If you watch the Battle of the Five Armies, DO IT IN IT'S EXTENDED FORM! The other two Hobbits don't really need to be watched in their extended form imo
They never said the others weren’t hurt by the wasps. Actually, the fact that she wasn’t killed during the 2 days she was out points to the fact that the others WERE hurt and were also probably trying to recover during those days.
I’m sorry but immediately right after 29:41 with that tracksuit comment I got an Old Spice body lotion advertisement and it just fits so perfectly LOL!
I remember being 15 and asking my dad if he could get me the audiobooks and I went through them so fast. And because I wasn't looking at the book I thought his name was Peter with a weird accent. Anyway the first book is my favorite but the last movies are the best in opinion.
The important thing is to talk over the exposition and impose your aversion to hunting for sport on Katniss's use of hunting to feed her family. And make sure to tell us all the other movies that each of the actors have been in. And don't forget to spoil things for Jen and help her know how to think about what she's seeing instead of letting her come to conclusions herself. Best reaction ever.
18:38 Pretty sure Jen will find out by the end of the movie, but the field where the tributes fight is part of a closed-off arena/ stadium that the “Game makers” control. Pretty much, they can’t leave. There’s technically no exit (at least, not one that is clearly advertised)
You have to remember this is one movie of 5. You’re not supposed to get everything you want to know from the 1st installment. The romance, the political history, all the symbolism behind their rebellious act w/the berries etc…. When ppl complain about what they deem to be an “unnecessary” scene(s), they should remember that this is only a piece of the story. You cannot decide what is/isn’t necessary yet.
In the book she considers taking all of them or wonders if someone will take all of them, but then thinks it would paint too big a target on their back, so they wouldn’t.
if youve only seen/read the first part it does seem like it would do well as a one time thing and there dont need to be more part but after youve seen/read everything it becomes clear its definitely meant as a trilogy
dude for real i was literally just saying Im pretty sure without battle royale we would have never have gotten hunger games and all those battle royale games we have today.
When you read Hunger Games it's actually pretty evident that it is not based on Battle Royale genre, which is also what Collins claims. Story is way more focused on actual war aspect and the dissonance between Capitol and the Districts, which is direct reflection of what inspired her to write it (which was seeing on TV reality TV Shows running at the same time as coverage of Iraq war). Hunger games themselves and the arena system is more akin to ancient gladiator fights - where enslaved people fought for their survival against animals, elements and other humans. There is 8 years between release of Battle Royale and Hunger Games. For middle aged white woman in US this is not unthinkable that she knows nothing about Japanese culture and storytelling. Remember that even within American fandoms a lot of stories like Battle Royale were not popular at all before 2010s. US has always been behind the rest of the world and Collins doesn't look like someone who even would be reading manga at the time in the first place. Mind you Battle Royale movie did not get released in US until 2010, because of how Japanese publishers were scared of the scandal the story could have caused there (as it involves children fighting to death, in the most brutal and ruthless way - beyond what Hunger Games gave us).
@@mjm3091There is zero chance she didnt get the idea of the battle royale element from BR regardless of her claim. That doesnt mean the story isnt massively different. Theres nothing in your comment that has to change for her to be inspired for parts of the book in isolation. I think she took it too far when she claimed she didnt know until long after. The first thing a publisher will do, even if your story is vastly less like another story than Hunger Games is to BR, is tell you about it and ask about it immediately to know what to do about it and any future plans that might be similar.
@@wyterabitt2149 no. You heavily underestimate how culturally illiterate are white Usonians and overestimating impact Japanese art has on global markets. And again - Battle Royale was not properly acclaimed in US at the time, the release of it being limited. Hunger Games also is not the classic battle royale genre, again - it's more alike to actual ancient gladiator fights.
Don’t know if you read much Jen but if you do I’d highly recommend the books after you finish. Such a good read and give you so much more lore about the world.
During your summary after you watched the movie, you were talking about the care packages "from the sponsors" and "from the mentor". That isn't technically correct. If you will remember, the mentors are merely previous victors of the Hunger Games. It is the mentors job to prepare them for the games, to give them strategies and insight. But, once the games start, their role changes to "surrogate". As a bit of a preamble (I think they explained this better in the book), but you can see a moment that is meant to convey a dramatic character arc (explained below) with Haymitch when he is watching Katniss in the tree with her open leg wound. Previously, he had been a drunk, not merely due to the obvious mental and emotional trauma (PTSD) with his participation in the Hunger Games, but also due to the fact that District 10 had only two (2) victors in it history, and he was the only victor still alive. As a victor, you are treated to a Mansion and abundant food. But District 10's "Victor's Village" had him as the sole occupant, which caused Haymitch to have to endure his hardship alone. Additionally, as the sole victor, he has to mentor both tributes, whereas the other Districts get one-on-one mentoring. Faced with having to constantly train these kids for combat, and year after year having none of them return, it just compounds his misery. Survivor's guilt, despondency, inadequacy, and loneliness all taking its toll. Now to explain Haymitch's dramatic character arc. He changes from mentor/trainer to surrogate (as he should, but it is unknown if he will ... 'cause drunkard) after gaining compassion for Katniss and her plight. He goes around the party and talks to guests (District 1 citizens) and shmoozes them. It may have seemed that he might have been too emotional to continue watching the screen, so he tried to distract his thoughts by enjoying the party. However, in actuality, he is trying to "sell her story" and promote her cause, in the hopes of gaining a Sponsor. So, where you thought that there should have been more of the other tributes receiving gifts from the parachutes, it isn't the mentors that are sending the gifts. It is the Sponsors (District 1 citizens, and possibly family and friends) who are sending the gifts. It is implied that Katniss' story captivated District 1 (and the other Districts) so much, that sponsorship focused on her. There is no mention of how often the gifts can be sent, but they are known to be extremely expensive (or, not necessarily the gift being expensive, but the act of sending it). In the prequels, they send many gifts, but those are supposedly scaled back in later years. May the odds be ever in your favor.
Katniss loves Gale (Liam Hemsworth) but not necessarily in a romantic way. He loves her, which they hint at every time it shows him looking all sad and dejected every time he's watching the games while Katniss and Peeta are having a romantic moment. He's been her best friend forever and helps her take care of her family. He is incredibly important to her. At the end of this you're left wondering if her feelings for Peeta are real, or if it was just fake and she was playing it up for the "show" so they could get sponsors/more gifts.
If you liked Josh Hutcherson in this, you should check out his latest film, "Five Nights at Freddy's". Based on the super popular independent video game series of the same name. Josh Hutcherson did a great job in it
I really don't like how this movie makes Seneca Crane (the game maker) to be an idiot to profit Snow's character: - They didn't give Katniss an 11 because "she deserved it", they gave her an 11 to make all the Careers turn against her and hunt her down as soon as they could. They wanted to make her pay shooting an arrow at them and put a target on her. - Seneca didn't get played by Haymitch this way, and he certainly didn't end the games being "forced" to admit Katniss' victory. I mean, sure, he was, but the humiliating way the film had to make him go "huhuh yhhuh WAIT!!" as soon as Katniss and Peeta lift their hands to eat the berries is bullshit. That's the whole irony of things: it is not Haymitch who manipulated Seneca into putting the "star crossed lovers" thing into the games: it was all his idea, he wanted to expose Katniss and weaken her by having her taking care of Peeta who was wounded and dying. Haymitch used the opportunity to push for the star-crossed lovers, sure, with the sponsors, tho, not with Seneca. It literally was a match of minds, with Seneca being at the same level as Haymitch from outside the games, and Katniss taking her sweet sweet time catching up to it. Which is where the beauty of Katniss finally playing Seneca/the Capitol comes from, at the very end. Seneca Crane was just as sadistic and sick and calculating as Snow is, he's worked for years preparing games and manipulating the audience, he isn't some dumb fawn that needed "education" from Snow about how to perform the games: the Capitol is overly simplified in these movies, they're just mostly dumb people being manipulated by some mastermind Snow, when it's actually much more twisted than that in the books. Also hearing your complaints about the love triangle, it's important to say: Suzanne Collins never wrote a love triangle to begin with, she was forced to add it later on by her editor because it's what "attracts the audience"... yup... we all could've done without the love triangle lol
Gale is not katniss boyfriend or "true love" hes her best friend, hunting partner and confidante but no crushing from katniss side. Gale somewhat has feelings for her but never talks about it to katniss before the hunger games

Are the DC animated movies not doing well? It’s been awhile
interesting you mention divergent in vid early on cause its also the sign and fire that started the decline of YA book to movies. the last book was changed to be direct to video only which all the main actors left cause if do those thjen thats instant death of their career on big screen (either way most werent seen again) and that caused chain reaction. other producers decided to cut back or leave from ya films to i think mortal engines was the last nail on the coffin with also covid lockdown coming up at the time.
12:20 "reminds me of squid game" lol with kids you got your gonna regonize the battle royale genre almost 24/7 if they play it and/or know of it.
the first mainstream battle royale game was literally the name itself battle royale from japan which was a manga then got a live action adaptation in early 2000s. basic premise is troublemaker kids taken to island to kill each other and survivor walks free and ppl watch it as entertainment. so side reminder: remember ro parents that read this, fortnite and hunger games roots is about kids encouraged to become killers and be celebrities :)
i may get auto deleted for going into this part: i would not be surprised either america, japan or whoever will make a manga/comic, show or movie of taking mass shooter attempters/threatners and even hoaxers in a battle royale situation. let them attempt to kill one another, bonus the hosts with twisted views shove in citizens not viable to society (no skills, not paying taxes, or heck the parents themselves) in there as bonus points to the person if they kill them and get supplies dropped in.
interestingly that will trigger varies ppl, one be the parents but what really triggers them is idea is punishing the parents by forcing them into that ring and get killed by those shooters with one of them is their own child. even further if parent beg saying its not their fault their kid is like that to twist that blade even more. if a book/film like that was made for sure its gonna cause ALOT of drama and talking about it depending on the subject, who it spotlights and how they make those ppl act in it.
The story in the books is written from Katniss’ perspective. That’s why you don’t see what happens to the other tributes in the films.
Which even if you didn't read the books (which I didn't for years), is obvious. The mystery at not knowing where the others are and what advantages they have is part of what makes the games scary & keeping the audience in the dark is a great move.
RIP, Donald Sutherland, 1935-2024.
He was a worthy adversary to Katniss Everdeen.
And a fearless Confederate General.
NOOOOOO🤧🤧🤧🤧
And funny tank commander, slow witted criminal soldier, creepy arsonist, clever German spy, weird Casanova, etc etc etc.
Yeah, sort of killed the reaction for me that he half spoiled it for her
Actually, the author Suzanne Collins said she was inspired to write the books when she saw the juxtaposition of people living normal lives on tv/reality shows and then she’d change the channel to see horrors of the war in Iraq. That’s why you see that stark contrast between the suffering of the districts vs the lavish lives of the wealthy in the Capitol. And that’s why the sequels explore the themes of war, propaganda and rebellion.
The gifts are not from Haymitch, they ARE from sponsors. The NOTES are from Haymitch, that's why they say "-H"
And they have a whole scene showing him talking to all those people, a spoon-fed extra explaination scene these two apparently love to reinforce the dialogue explanation at the beginning of the movie.
They are from haymitch sponsors paid for them but he picked and set them
@@charlesisbell6561
@@charlesisbell6561 Same difference.
I thought it was once a year until 18. I haven't read the books.
@@bobc538 yeah you got it right.
The sponsors being able to send stuff to help contestants pretty much answers all the "why didnt the others die to ____?" questions.
Fun fact: In the books, the dogs that chased them in the finale were the tributes who died in the arena. The had similar traits such as fur color=being their hair color, same with eye color
They mutated their bodies??
@@Kyzen_Wrell I think it was something like they put their brains into the dog's bodies or something like that, because Katniss stated in the books not only did the dogs look human, they even acted a bit human too because they were standing up on their hind legs same way a person would
@@Sh0cXwav3damn and I thought Tigris Snow was creepy looking
@@Sh0cXwav3 She said that when the first dog spoted them, It stood up on it's hind legs and pointed at them with one of it's front ones
this is just what katniss wondered could be true, because of how similar they looked. remember she is not always a reliable narrator. it was likely just a tactic to upset the remaining tributes. earlier in the books she explains how the dead tributes bodies are shipped back home. it’s unlikely they would tamper with them without causing an upset, which they also do not want.
If Katniss and Rue had been the last ones to survive, I'm pretty sure Katniss would have sacrificed herself. She truly saw her little sister in Rue.
CATCHING FIRE IS SO GOOD, can’t wait till you get to MJ1&2 as well. You mentioned you don’t feel like more movies were needed, oh boy you’re so wrong. LOTS OF LOVE
IMO Catching Fire is the best of the... trilogy/quadrilogy, hope they react to next ones soon lol
@@FelipeCRC 100% the best, the start of the rebellion !!!
@FelipeCRC I've watched tons of reactions to this series and Catching Fire is universally agreed upon as being tiers above the other films, absolute banger sequel that deepens the plot and raises the stakes exponentially.
I agree... the first was the weakest
Y'all were pretty bloodthirsty, expecting innocent kids who never asked to be here to kill rampantly.
Jen... THEY'RE NOT MURDERERS. THAT'S THE POINT. THEY DON'T WANT TO KILL ANYONE BECAUSE THEY AREN'T PSYCHOS.
Jen being more concerned about a deer than katniss trying to feed her starving family is a little bit funny
Sad.
Not only that, but she complained a lot about Katniss murdering way to few other children.
@@Rafaela_S. tells you something about jen lmao
It's distrusting how many times they both asked "why didn't they just kill that kid".
The Capital caving to Peeta and Katniss eating the berries that would kill both of them was the entire theme of the movie(hope) so it makes sense.
It also becomes a very important moment in leading up to many of the events that happen in the sequels because it’s really the first time that someone in Katniss and Peeta’s position has publicly stood up to the Capital by refusing to play by the Capital’s rules and won.
beefcake

Rue dying is a very important event. It helps drives katness's actions the rest of the trilogy.
Right?
To answer the question at the feast: No, there is no rule saying you can only take one bag. But if you arrive first and take all the bags, everybody else will go after you to get their own bags back. If you take only your bag the others have to secure their own bags first before they start hunting you, so you have a much better chance of getting away.
I didn't expect yall to be so cold about Rue. All i could think of was, what if this was one of my babies.
After all their bad takes, no they didn't surprise me.
They're watching it like they are people in Capital
I’m pretty sure Katniss and Gale are supposed to seem like they’re just good friends. At least from the books perspective…😊
And it did. It shows Gale realizing he most likely lost his chance because she may die & becoming aware he messed up. After basically playing a romantic part in the games I think Katniss is realizing Gale has looked at her the way Peeta does & she is now really confused about caring for her best and only real friend.
fun little piece of info: author suzanne collins apparently originally wrote that gale was katniss' cousin but her publishers wanted her to make a love triangle for some reason so she had to change it.
thats so funny, that later on collins makes gale pretend to BE her cousin for the poliitics of it haha
10:41 Katniss and Gale going hunting is illegal it's why she hid her bow in the tree outside of the fences.
I LOVE that Holden’s sister tied into the ad, that was awesome
She needs to be a part of the girls watching something if she visits again
As for the love triangle the bottom line is the boys love katniss and she has never even considered love. In the book his highlighted how gale/liam being like her, looking as a sibling and sharing her negative view of the world. Peeta/Josh is described as Prim, basically the light and hope in katniss life.
I just got so giddy because that train ride and Elizabeth Banks " That is Mahogany" Is one of my favorite lines!! LOL
Okay! As someone who has read the Hunger Games books A LOT there are a few key things to help you:
-Firstly when it comes to the sponsors, not all of her gifts were sent from Haymitch as her mentor he just gets to control the flow of her gifts.

G0t s0mething 4 this guy
In the early drafts Gale was Katniss' cousin. There wasn't supposed to be a "love triangle" the editors made the author change the books.
They didn't grow up together. They met 4 years ago, when Katniss was 12yo (Gale was 14), after their dad died.
that girl with the throwing knives had her neck broken, at least that's what i always assumed. he like slammed her head into the wall in a way that broke her neck.
Her death was way more brutal in the book. But movie had to be pg13 lol
Peeta didn’t get any sponsors, he says so himself
The whole love triangle thing is much more fleshed out in the books. Katniss and Gale are best friends. He is in love with her and protects her and her sister, but she does not have romantic feelings for him, but considers marrying him for stability. She pretends to love Peeta for the Games, but eventually does come to love him in her way.The author initially planned for Gale to be Katniss's cousin though, and the publishers pushed for the love triangle to appeal to the YA audience. Honestly I think it would have been better the way she intended!

THEY SHOULD WATCH THE MAZE RUNNER NEXT!
9:54 Well, Prim didn’t go to the Hunger Games, so… Maybe the pin did protect her
as a fan for the past 3 years, YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW LONG IVE WAITED FOR THIS!
"Why don't they just all run, or die their own way?"
Because if everyone refuses to fight, or offs themselves, their families will be tortured and killed for their lack of "entertainment".
YOU NEED TO
Once you start Catching Fire, you’ll see the improvement in everything + it gets darker and even more serious
G0t s0mething 4 this guy
The gifts Katniss got were from sponsors. The notes included were added by Haymitch. Also worth noting that, as the games continue on, the price that sponsors have to pay for gifts to send goes up.
you have no idea of how long i have been waiting for this!
BATTLE ROYALE, THE ORIGINAL HUNGER GAMES!

I mean the wasps things make sense because in real life different people have different tolerance to stuff like some get stung by a bee and are just fine some people are deathly allergic to bee stings and can die so they can get away with and they said ( in some cases death) so it wasn't sure thing it would kill them
Agree..dont get how this was an issue lol
16:47
Katniss: (pushes Peta to the wall) “WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT!?”
Holden: “Hey that’s how me and Jenn got together.”
Jenn: “Stop it.”
G0t s0mething 4 this guy

Appreciate the love for physical media!
I love their...casual strategizing of killing children. The tone changed real quick from "ohhh, poor kid, this is a sick movie" to "least she wont have to PUT HER DOWN LATER, probably the best outcome." 😅
Exactly, that they immediately were strategically thinking about killing vs survival was disturbing.

They never said the others weren’t hurt by the wasps. Actually, the fact that she wasn’t killed during the 2 days she was out points to the fact that the others WERE hurt and were also probably trying to recover during those days.
I enjoyed the first divergent. Sadly the last movie didn’t get made because the movies went downhill after the first movie
The third movie is horrible.

Did you know, when Cheers ended Woody Harrelson started a band called Manly Moondog and the Three Kool Kats?
18:38 Pretty sure Jen will find out by the end of the movie, but the field where the tributes fight is part of a closed-off arena/ stadium that the “Game makers” control. Pretty much, they can’t leave. There’s technically no exit (at least, not one that is clearly advertised)
And by this point they already showed them getting trackers too anyway right?

You have to remember this is one movie of 5. You’re not supposed to get everything you want to know from the 1st installment. The romance, the political history, all the symbolism behind their rebellious act w/the berries etc….
When ppl complain about what they deem to be an “unnecessary” scene(s), they should remember that this is only a piece of the story. You cannot decide what is/isn’t necessary yet.

HEYOO! Shoutout for The Core, my fave guilty/not-guilty pleasure cheesy flick of choice! 😂
"Yes, yes, and the moon is made of cheeez!" 😂😂😂
In the book she considers taking all of them or wonders if someone will take all of them, but then thinks it would paint too big a target on their back, so they wouldn’t.
if youve only seen/read the first part it does seem like it would do well as a one time thing and there dont need to be more part but after youve seen/read everything it becomes clear its definitely meant as a trilogy
now you gotta watch the next one. catching fire is probably the best movie from this series
"...they smell like ruminating asparagus in there..."
- Ah yes, Holden's sweet sweet bedroom chatter 😂
Team Peeta!! 😤
With some hummus
They should watch Battle Royale (2000) since that inspires the whole "Battle Royale" genre.
dude for real i was literally just saying Im pretty sure without battle royale we would have never have gotten hunger games and all those battle royale games we have today.
I find it so hard to believe that Hunger games wasn't inspired by BR.
Oh, how the Gods have blessed us today.
Jen definitely calls Holden "Mr. Hardman" in the bedroom
THEY SHOULD WATCH BATTLE ROYALE!
Fun fact: Before Katniss throws the ring into the lava, she didn't yell Jumanji, which is the reason why she didn't get to go to Valhalla at the end.
If you keep watching the series, you will notice one significant thing missing:
People actually looking like they are hungry, let alone starving.
maze runner and the hunger games
THIS GIRL IS ON FIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Request all Madagascar movies 😂 love you guys 😊
Also hobbit yes please 🙈 😁

I really don't like how this movie makes Seneca Crane (the game maker) to be an idiot to profit Snow's character:
- They didn't give Katniss an 11 because "she deserved it", they gave her an 11 to make all the Careers turn against her and hunt her down as soon as they could.
Also hearing your complaints about the love triangle, it's important to say:
Suzanne Collins never wrote a love triangle to begin with, she was forced to add it later on by her editor because it's what "attracts the audience"... yup... we all could've done without the love triangle lol
I think that the gift come from sponsors and the mentor only went to speak to them to ask for gift (and he adeed the little letter)
Gale is not katniss boyfriend or "true love" hes her best friend, hunting partner and confidante but no crushing from katniss side. Gale somewhat has feelings for her but never talks about it to katniss before the hunger games
