I actually came back to this video to say exactly that, that these more casual videos are also fantastic. I was going to say please make more videos but I know they are a lot of work but these more casual ones are just as lovely so please feel free to post more of them, I am a newbie to metalsmithing and find your videos just wonderful to watch. I actually started classes very recently (after putting it off for several years) but they came to an abrupt end due to the virus, I had only gone to 2! But I made a pendant and two rings in that time and I just absolutely love it. Take care!!

It's always a process, I still sometimes make the same mistakes today, although not so often now and I can fix them as I go. It's all a learning process. finish work has been my hardest thing to learn! so many steps.. I'm learning that it's so much easier when you have all your elements finished so to speak before soldering everything together. then I can just solder the components and do polishing or patina and then tumble finish it.. looking back at my first pieces makes me realize how far i've come in just a yr and also that YES, She believes she could so she did :)
Hello! i really enjoyed this especially since today i made my very first ring at home, an argentium hammered round wire ring with a simple bezel set eliat stone. it took me most of the day and i had to learn a LOT from mistakes which is good haha! I also skipped the finishing stage before doing the final solder which i regretted after haha. It helped me to see you reminding yourself and us to not skip parts of the process. Thank you! x x

You seem to approach new creative challenges like I do. When I started jewelry, I started w/ bead weaving the teeny tiny beads (which I still love!) My first piece was a very complicated tapestry pattern. I could tell it wasn't going to be perfect, but I was determined to finish it. There are much simpler ways to begin bead weaving, but every piece I did after that first one was a piece of cake...well, not as stressful anyway.
hiya flower I still screw up, I have melted stuff in the very last stages of soldering I wont tell you what the swear words were but it is part of the learning curve, if we did not make the odd gaff now and again life would not be as much fun take care flower keep well.
Thanks for sharing your first pieces! They look so much better than mine 😂 but mine are all copper and brass. I definitely agree with you on silver being easier. Also, that labradorite ring is gorgeous!

I think they look lovely, even tho you can clearly see the scratches on the back of the Labradorite-ring, it is still a unique piece of jewelry made by you
i also think you and i are similar in the quality of work we want to put out.. we are different of course I feel you are more elegant while i'm more organic and rustic... but there are certain things I see that I just would never let go... I'm of the school of it's nice to not see seems.. bezel seems, solder seems and also scratches and marks.. some people do like those details tho... so to each their own I suppose :)

I'm really impressed with your first piece , good imagination and execution. I hope you're not sensitive or can't take criticism. your last two pieces , I would take apart and scrap the silver role in the mill and start over. We learn more from our failures than our successes. If you don't learn from your mistakes you're destined to repeat them. PS : you're still adorable
To be honest I've been wanting to reuse the silver from these pieces, but I'm kind of attached emotionally to them 😄 I want to keep them as souvenirs and reminders to look at. To see how far I've come 😀

You need to remember what & why & holding it or even just glimpsing it will bring more to mind than a part remembered fading recolection! I've seen a rouges gallery on a wall as a constant reminder of not just the mistake but the 'why' it was made..

I could not part with my first pieces, if I may suggest, start taking pictures of your work and make 8 by 10 or even poster size, frame them and hang them when you do art shows , and you will always have them. And you can create a portfolio. You're doing a great job stardust

And do you realize how demoralizing it is to show something that's pretty nice and say, "Ya it's it's my first, it's not very good because..." while the rest of us have first pieces and are absolutely trash? Please don't post this nonsense.
That's a very sad approach. Yes, that is seriosly my very first piece. If you continued watching, you'd soon find out that I said Emily helped me during classes I attended. Also, I've always been skilled in manual jobs and crafts, so I felt very confident in metalsmithing from the very beginning. I see you accept only a certain level of skill that you decided to be authentic and it has to be "trash" for everyone. Otherwise it can't possibly be real. Because there is no way people may present different levels of skills. It's a shame, because you yourself take away a chance to be inspired and motivated by not accepting that someone might actually be good at something. No, unless they're very bad, you won't believe it. I encourage you to have some openness and patience and watch the video instead of rage quitting the moment something isn't necessarily according to your beliefs. However, if you'd rather believe that everyone is the same with identical skills and nobody can possibly present better skills than you, then I'm sorry, because you set yourself up for many unnecessary disappointments with this approach. All the best.
