  • Heating and Cooling in the office/shop is a must and I didn't want to break the bank with a Mr. Cool - so we bought a blueridge and installed it ourselves with some help from our friend Matt.

    Blueridge has good equipment, I've installed dozens of them. İt's a Midea product from china and that's ok because that's where they all come from. They are essentially a clone of the older more reliable Carriers from the mid 2000s. Solid equipment, i recommend. Good installation fellas

    I know this is 3 years old but 12x16 office needs 6,000 btus not 9,000. The reason you dont want to go with a bigger unit is it wont effectively remove humidity for a room and the Compressor runs with a little more power, It also depends on your climate and insulation.

      Glad I saw this post before I make my purchase. My bedroom is 14 feet by 12 feet with an 8 foot ceiling. My living room is about 15 x 15 with a 10 foot ceiling. How do I buy the correct dual zone? And can they be mix n match? Say, a 6000 BTU for the bedroom and a 9000 BTU for the living room?

    • @Anonymous-xb7kc
      @Anonymous-xb7kc 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@AnnLippert1 You can mix the mini split heads, You're Bedroom could use a 6,000 BTU head and your living room could use a 12,000 btu head. So in this case you'd need a 18,000 BTU Condenser. Though I don't know if your living room needs 12,000 because youtube won't let me do the calculations without deleting my comment.

    Where did you get the power source for the mini split? i see the box outside on the side of the house. did you have to run a dedicated line from the breaker box? is it 230 volt? 240 volt? could you use a 120 volt? (im clealry not a electrician) just curious.

    • @Anonymous-xb7kc
      @Anonymous-xb7kc 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, You do have to run a disconnect box with a dedicated line for the Minisplit. Depending on your unit, It can be 120 volts or 240 volts. If the unit only uses 20 amps or less itll most likely be rated for use with 120v circuits. If the unit uses more than 20 amps itll be rated for use with 240 volts (Check the Box/Manual for the minisplit you have, Also the fuses and the breaker should be rated for the Maximum Rated Trip Protection.) Remember you are not paying for amps you are paying for Kilowatt Hours.
      Its a common misconception that 240 volts saves you money with the unit running, It does however save you money during the cost of Installion as we can install with thinner wires as Voltage commonly referred to as Electromotive Force is pushing the Current (Amps) at a much faster rate thus reducing the friction in the wire so it doesnt get super hot. I hope this helps and answers your question.
      Edit: 15 amps is generally used with 14 gauge wire, 20 amps is used with 12 gauge wire and 30 amps is used with 10 gauge. There is no such thing as "220 volt wire." Breakers for residential are pretty much Single or Double Pole Breakers. Residential is just Single Phase. If you are running 120 volts you use a Single Pole Breaker, I recommend using 12/2 with Ground (Its rated for 20 amps but its not much more expensive than 14/2. If you are running 240 volts you would use a double pole breaker and depending on the System needs you use 12/3 with ground or 10/3 with ground. Lastly, any wires that are outside the house should be in conduit and should be THWN rated, Its Stranded Wire thats rated for wet locations. THHN is sometimes used but its meant for indoor applications.

      That is super helpful info! I have not yet bought my mini split. I did get a quote from a company I like in Vegas to run the electrical. They quoted me $1,300. I don't know if that's a good price yet. It's an 850 square foot 1 story house. Anyhoo. I'm getting good info. Thanks !!

    • @Anonymous-xb7kc
      @Anonymous-xb7kc 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@AnnLippert1 I would suggest before you buy the mini split know the Sqft of the Area you are trying to cool, Then search "BTU Calculator" to get a rough Idea of how many BTUs you need to keep your Area cool, Keep in mind 1 person general lets off approximately 560 BTUs of heat so most BTU Calculator ask for how many people would be In the room. Don't buy the biggest unit thinking "It'll cool down quick and won't run as long." The reason I bring this up is that If you buy a unit that is too powerful for the area it'll short cycle, Everytime a compressor runs it pulls in a lot of Amperage to start the Air Conditioner, In some cases for like 2 seconds it'll pull in 80 amps to start the compressor, While I stated you dont pay for amperage, you do pay for Watt hours and Amperage and Watts are relative to one another. Also too big of a unit would also not get rid of humidity as much as If the unit is proper size. If the unit is too small it'll struggle to cool down the space. Mini splits in particular are very efficient and are designed to run continuously, Some Mini splits have Dual Inverters to make them even more efficient.
      Also I can't say if 1300 in your area is good. What size wire did they quote and how far do they have to go?

    • @Anonymous-xb7kc
      @Anonymous-xb7kc 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@AnnLippert1 Apparently My response got deleted, I said that before you buy your mini-split I would use a BTU Calculator on the space that you want to cool so if you were to do 850 sq ft and thats the entire sqft you wanted to cool you would need 23,147 BTUs (Number could be off depending on how your home is) to cool that space. If Every Ton is 12,000 btu, You would need 2 tons to cool your space which is 24,000 btus for heating and cooling. You never wanna go with more than you need when it comes to Air-Conditioning because the compressor would short cycle. Everytime the compresser kicks on it uses more amps to start but then levels out, and Mini splits are designed to run continuous and are more efficient that way. A 24,000 BTU Blueridge minisplit says that the Maxium Current its rated to use is 30 so you would install 30 amp disconnect which is 10/3 wire.

    • @Anonymous-xb7kc
      @Anonymous-xb7kc 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@AnnLippert1 Mini splits do turn off, they just are designed to run for longer periods of time but with more energy efficiency. Mini splits are 40% more efficient than window units. They are nice and Heat pumps in general are efficient. Window Units are still more energy efficient than portable AC Units because Portable ACs have smaller internals.
      Mini splits and Heat Pumps are more energy efficient when heating in the spring and Fall as an Air conditioner takes heat from one area and moves it to another, When there is a Temperature difference of 10-20 degrees Heat pumps/Mini Splits are 3-4 times more energy efficient as for Every 1 BTU of heat you put in it puts out 3-4 depending on the heat pump. When temperatures get close to freezing heat pumps become less energy efficient and becomes more expensive than Gas Heat and cost a lot more money to run.
      Lastly Just because a system is running for longer period of time dont assume that it cost you more money to run this is a mistake people make. Continuous in this instance isnt a good way of putting it. Mini Splits run longer but are way more efficient than traditional Forced Air Systems. Your energy consumption will be way less with a mini split as it uses very little power to keep the room at a very steady temperature. The only Heat Pump that is More efficient is Geo Thermal which cost pennies a day to run even in the winter because the lines are general under the frost line where the ground is 54-56 degrees all year round. Though the cost of install for Geothermal is Generally what kills us from Implementing it. As A mini split is 1 - 2 thousand dollars to install and Geo Thermal is over 30 thousand dollars easily and depending on the area can cost you way more than that. Anyways Mini splits run longer but save you more money. The only real drawback I have for a mini split is that it's a bit harder to clean the indoor coils when they get dirty as you can't hose them down, Instead they use a no rinse cleaner and a coil brush but Every AC system needs to be cleaned to allow Air to flow freely and allow them to run more efficient. Hope this helps.
