    Geez that van looks heavy, it’s like an anchor in sand. Good work getting out, that’s all that matters when you’re stuck.

    StarTrack and AusPost are the same company.
    Oh and best to always leave your seatbelt on. If you take it off and roll over there’s nothing holding you in and you’ll likely get badly injured.
    For winching on sand - best to use a sand anchor.

    • @lilandjake
      @lilandjake  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers jerry, good pickup on that! Yep, wouldn't have been great to have a sand anchor, but the maxtrax worked pretty well once buried properly! Thanks for watching!

    Fantastic video all ways Lil and Jake but unfortunately that’s apart of nature sand flies they can be very difficult when you are trying to sleep. And for getting stuck plenty of times hey at least you both got out and safe and back out there exploring. So looking forward to seeing you both on the next episode take care 😊

    Enjoyed the video guys. I'll give it you, you're either brave or crazy, or maybe a bit of both to tackle some of those soft sand beaches towing a van on your own, but you always seem to come out OK. Good on you !! With your ARK jockey wheel, to save damage to it, have you considered locking the wheel facing up and out of the way? If not enough room, it can be locked sideways to avoid any damage. That's what I do with mine on my camper trailer. Cheers, Dave

    • @lilandjake
      @lilandjake  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hahahah, definitely a bit of both I think! Absolutely, we take the risk and sometimes it pays off sometimes it doesn’t but we always know we can get out, even if it takes a couple of hours. 😅 yeah!! Great idea, we usually do but with the rough roads sometimes it rattles out and ends up facing down, hopefully the new one will hold a bit better. We’ve also mounted the new one of the other side so there’s more room away from the tap which is epic. Thanks so much Dave!! You’re a legend for all the tips. 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼

    Did you drop the vans tyre pressures? It looks like it was cutting in and holding you back.

    • @lilandjake
      @lilandjake  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea had them dropped, down to 6 too. it's hard to tell in the video but we are actually sitting in a valley in the sand, with the car pointing up and van down, that's why we didn't keep maxtraxing because we were driving up an incline. Thanks for watching!

  • @DieselDave
    @DieselDave ปีที่แล้ว +17

    Some folks have disconnected the van, recovered the car to the hard sand, and then winched the van down to the hard packed sand to complete the recovery. Well done guys. Great content. Cheers, dd.

    • @lilandjake
      @lilandjake  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Cheers diesel! I'm sure that would have worked aswell, if not better, just gets hard to think sometimes in these situations with the tide coming up. We need you there as a coach maybe?! Thanks so much for watching! Hopefully see you next week!

    • @rich9903
      @rich9903 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Maxtrax make a trailer skid specifically for situations like you found yourselves in. The trailer skid is strapped securely to your jockey wheel while you unhitch your caravan, get your vehicle out of the bog (will be much easier without being connected to the caravan) and get it up on solid ground then use your winch to pull the caravan out with your jockey wheel on the skid. The skid will take up some precious storage space (as I found) but well worth having particularly when badly bogged and remote like you guys were.
      The other method I’ve seen used very successfully is doing something similar to what you guys had done with your Maxtrax but with your spare tyre. A spare tyre has much more mass than the Maxtrax and when buried deep enough and angled correctly, you’ll end up with an almost unmovable anchor point.
      I’m no expert by any means and I’ve never had to resort to them myself (yet!!) but I’ve researched the issue enough to believe that these options work 👍

    • @lilandjake
      @lilandjake  ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers for the knowledge rich! Yes I've seen these things, they look great! They're just a bit out of our price range at the moment unfortunately, but if we had had one on hand our recovery would have gone a bit more like you stated!
      and yes the spare tyre could have worked lovely aswell, but the maxtrax worked great once we actually buried them correctly, and also a much much smaller hole to dig in 38c heat. There's more than 1 way to skin a cat!

    • @harrywalker968
      @harrywalker968 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      some people arnt stoopid enough to take a van on a beach, they know nothing about,, with the wrong vehicle, no lockers. too low. no idea..for the price of the van, ranger,,wrong choice,, an iveco daily 4x4 with a caravan on the back, would be more capable, cheaper. being a cantractor, for 23 yrs,,you do not,,want to tow a trailer,,anywhere.. there a hassle.. i bought a s/duty. 4.2tdi. raised 3'' for zero. 35,s. all gear in back, & sleep in there. cook, everything.. no warris mate.. theres only 2 jap 4x4rs to buy.. a toyota 80,. & a nissan gu, 4.2tdi. preferably the nissan.. better.. i also have a 75 ford f250 highboy.. 26'' to the sill,,std.. 5sp, 4 w disc. lockers. 35,s. old skool wins everytime. if,,we didnt have stoopid import laws,, we would have a choice, of the nissan titan, v8.. toyota tundra, v8, or ford f150 , v8.. yes there petrol..but cheaper in the long run.. services, re builds. ect.

    • @lilandjake
      @lilandjake  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers David! Yes it took a couple of times to work out how to bury them but I got it right in the end, spare tyre would have worked great aswell, but I'd rather dig a maxtrax sized hole than a 33 inch tyre sized hole in 38 degree heat. A good thing to carry is a sand anchor. For winching off.
    All persons in the car should know how to drive 4x4. For emergencies as well as safety. The first thing out for recovery is WATER ...DEHYDRATION IS SERIOUS.
    An old trick is to use your grey water to harden the track up. There are many ways to recover a veichle trapped in sand. Finding the most productive way is. the key.. good vids guys. Keep up the gr8 work

    Hilarious..especially seeing the 'extras' people looking down from the upper dune area watching you two !!. Next time, bury your spare tyre deep into the sand and winch off it rather than flimsy poly 'max trax'. You will get better purchase off a heavry tyre on rim. You might have gotten out in 2 goes at it.

    • @lilandjake
      @lilandjake  ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers muds, yea a couple of tourists had a laugh at us, sure a spare tyre would have worked, but digging a hole big enough to fit a 33 in 38 degree heat would have sucked. We got out in the end anyways, thanks for watching!

    content as good as 4wd 24/7.. find the worst track.. remember this.. a 33'' tyre,deflated to 10,ect. is a 31 at most..this is why you buy vehicles that take 35,s std. no mods..

    • @lilandjake
      @lilandjake  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Harry walker! Thanks for the comment! Just trying to grasp what your saying here, so from what I'm gathering your saying a 33' tyre becomes a 31' when deflated? But then what does a 10.5inch wide tyre (a 31) become when it's deflated compared to a 12.5 wide (a 33') ? Does it still become a 31?

    dont think i would like to dig a hole big enough to bury a tire but i suppose would try anything if desperate

    • @lilandjake
      @lilandjake  ปีที่แล้ว

  • @edbelt9155
    @edbelt9155 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Probably where you were going wrong is not digging a trench 4m or so from the hole back towards your truck for the rope to sit down in, so it meant the rope angle you had was pulling the Maxtrax up a bit meaning they don't work nearly as well as sinking the rope down into the sand and getting a better angle.
    Better option still would have been to bury a spare wheel as anchor and use Maxtrax under the wheels for floatation.

    • @lilandjake
      @lilandjake  ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers mate, yea a trench would have done better I reckon, but it still worked in the end, and I didn't have to bury a 33inch tyre in stupid heat and then dig it back out again! Thanks for watching! We hope you enjoyed it! 😉

  • @jasonsmith-cu1xg
    @jasonsmith-cu1xg ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks for the good video. You can also dig a spare wheel into the ground as an anchor for the winch, if you had have dug a bit of a trench for the strap also it would have been much better. With a trench on an angle for the winch rope the tracks would not have lifted, it would have been puling against the bank not having the strap pulling the tracks up.

    • @lilandjake
      @lilandjake  ปีที่แล้ว

    Dig a trench for the winch rope, so it's pulling straight and not trying to pull your maxtraxs up and out. Let your Tyers down on the caravan as well. Don't drive and spin your wheels that just digs you in more try and let the winch do most of the work

    Whatever u dig in for an anchor, dig a trench from the bottom of ur anchor to the 4x4. That way u don't lift ur anchor up, as u did, is stays where u dug it in, no lifting.
    Ur way only missing the trench for the rope. It would have worked first time.

    Lol good advertising for camp boss deflators, this is the second channel now showing faulty ones, sarah and keelan travels tested a brand new set in comparison to icheck ones and theirs were faulty brand new. I followed their advice and bought the icheck ones and while the markings werent perfectly accurate, i was able to stretch the springs inside a tiny bit and make them accurate, essentially calibrating them. They work perfectly now every time, within 0.2 psi of what i set them at.

    • @lilandjake
      @lilandjake  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey guys......great work on the episodes. Just wanted to share with you an observation I've made when using my Staun tire deflators. Their effectiveness and accuracy seems dependent on how firmly they're screwed on to the valve stem. Too tight and they don't cut out at the set pressure. Too loose and they cut out early. I find firm finger tight without forcing them to bind further is about right and they work every time. Campboss ones might be the same.

    • @lilandjake
      @lilandjake  ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers jarrod! Ok well we might give that a go, originally I thought maybe there was something stuck inside them but after pulling apart and inspecting they were clean and free of debris, they still didn't work, I might give your option a go though! Thanks for the advice! Cheers for the comment. ❤️❤️❤️

    Just found you guys and have been binge watching your vids. Love the way you keep it real as it's more informative and entertaining as well. Also just an observation, the weight distribution of your ute seems a bit off. Try adding a bit more weight between the axles so you'll have more traction at the front as well, when you get bogged. Stay safe guys, cheers from India.

    • @lilandjake
      @lilandjake  ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers wer kar! I'm glad your enjoying them! Yea it does look heavy in the back sometimes because it has light duty springs with airbags, I never go offroad with pressure in the airbags so it makes it sit down in the back alot.
