- Taking a look at the official Mercedes footage of the new S-Class's PARK PILOT system, a self-parking system.
If specified with preinstallation for the INTELLIGENT PARK PILOT, the S-Class is prepared for Automated Valet Parking (AVP, SAE Level 4). In conjunction with the necessary optional equipment and the corresponding Connect service (depending on country), the new S-Class has the onboard technology to enter and leave multi-storey car parks equipped with an AVP infrastructure in highly automated mode and without a driver, provided that national legislation permits such operation.
As standard, the S-Class is equipped with Active Parking Assist with a reversing camera, and on request this can be combined with a 360° camera. In the S-Class, all the information from all sensors and cameras is fusioned. This enables more parking spaces to be recognised and offered. Parking spaces defined by lines (not by vehicles) can also be used for automated parking for the first time.
Mercedes-Benz goes another step further when it comes to parking: If specified with preinstallation for the INTELLIGENT PARKING PILOT, the S-Class is prepared for highly automated driverless parking (Automated Valet Parking, AVP, SAE Level 4). In conjunction with the necessary optional equipment and the corresponding Connect service (depending on country), the new S-Class has the onboard technology to enter and leave multi-storey car parks equipped with an AVP infrastructure in highly automated mode and without a driver, provided that national legislation permits such operation.
The vision: The driver securely parks the vehicle in a designated drop-off area of the multi-storey car park, and after all passengers have left he starts the parking procedure using the smartphone app. The sensor system in the car park checks whether a suitable space is available. If so, the AVP infrastructure confirms the handover of the vehicle for the driver in the app, and he/she can leave the S-Class and depart. The vehicle is then started automatically, and automatically drives to its parking space with the help of the infrastructure installed in the car park. On returning, the driver can let the S-Class drive to a designated pick-up area by smartphone command.

@@admiki9808 walking speed is actually defined as 5 to 15 kmh per hour so this car is within range. in addition they obviously try to prevent accidents by all means as it would mean bad press (as several accidents with teslas auto pilot already did in the past)
Wird sich so nicht durchsetzen, zu viele klicks. Aber langfristig wird sowas normal werden. Zudem sollten wir nicht vergessen, wie komplex das zu programmieren ist, Hut ab für die Entwicklung

The best example of not everything needs to be done that technologically can be done. This works in an ideal environment during low Covid travel activities...but besides that...omg what a chaos this would cause.

Oh yeah, that scales magnificently. Imagine 40 people arriving at the same time. 40 automated-valet-parking-spots side to side (not a lot for an aiport). They all go out of the cars and hit "Go". Magnificent machine ballet ensues. Cars moving at turtle pace, blocking one another, trying to pull out randomly. Stampeding herd problem at its finest. Then random pedestrians walk around, adding more to machine confusion. Finally someone throws a napkin on a road. Or pidgeon sits down. That blocks all 40 cars mid-move. Indefnitely. After a week in NYC you arrive back at Berlin's autmated-valet-parking-space only to notice your Mercedes ran out of gas while waiting on reverse gear for the past week. Glorious!

It was meant for when you are dropping off with your car and need to catch your flight. You just go on your way and set the car to find its own parking space.

Guys please. Of course this feature is just for demonstrating that future cars will maybe be capable of doing this on their own. Sure, it would be faster to park your car yourself but in my opinion it is still a big achievement
Don’t get me wrong this is incredible and is a massive step forward in the automotive world and completely support it....but the time this took to park since he got out the drivers seat I would’ve just parked it myself 😂

it's all about advancing technology. It is absolutely a gimmick and Mercedes knows that, the reason they try out things like that is that they are able to gather experience with self driving cars...you can not go from 0 to 100, you need small incremental steps and many of the steps look very silly and useless.

die bessere Lösung wären wenn Parkhaus angestellte die Fahrzeuge parken wie in Luxushotels, einfach den Wagen abgeben und fertig. Dadurch wprden auch wieder Arbeistellen generiert und man hat ein Top Service.

Am I the only one that thought it took him way too many key touches on the smartphone screen to set the self park option? Needs to be simplified and more user friendly. By the time he was done he could have parked the damn car himself.

Bosch and APCOA to provide automated valet parking technology in parking garages across Germany
Driverless parking from Hamburg to Munich.
Now that automated valet parking has been approved for commercial use in the P6 parking garage at Stuttgart airport, Bosch and APCOA are branching out and installing the technology in 15 further parking garages in Germany. From Hamburg to Munich, work to expand the infrastructure-based, automated, and driverless SAE Level 4 parking system is set to start in 2023.
The purpose of this feature is to drop your car of at the start point and make youself on the way to your flight while the car finds a parking spot and parks. Or you get out of the plane and order your car to get picked up and it will be there when you arrive at the parkinglot.
What if it fails or too many people do it at the same time? Who’s in charge?

I'll take the Tesla Model 3 that can self drive in city streets, stop at intersections and make left/right turns, go through roundabouts and is leagues ahead of the s class despite being priced like the c class.

LEXUS presented simillar System more than 15 years ago!! If i´m blocked driving in the Garage i will place some Stickers on the Sensors so the owner has to pick up by himself.
Governmental regulations don’t allow higher speeds, understandable, also in multi storey car parks you are only allowed walking speed, but what I missed in this demonstration... the parking area was pretty empty, most multi storey car parks I know dint have that much free spaces. Question is, after watching the S-class parking behind that column, would it be that easy when there are not that spacey slots available or if there were cars parked across the S-class? Meaning, if the car has less space to manoeuvre?

Whoever designed the app really has no idea what a good UI is. A good user interface minimizes the time a user has to spend in a program to get the inputs or outputs the user wants to have. A driver of an S-Class does not want to click through 10 screens of bullshit notifications. The user wants to press a "park my car" button to get it to find a parking space and a "retrieve my car" button to get it back. Maybe a big red "Cancel" button would also be handy, in case you forgot something. That's it. Being reminded whether you have taken all the luggage with you is borderline insulting towards the inteligence of the person that just exited the car.

Too bad that MB has deactivated Active Park Assist (with driver on board) on the entire range of cars registered in Italy and also in other European countries since September 2020, and it's not clear if MB will deactivate it on all cars registered before that date at the next scheduled maintenance
Really? It sucks. On-board parking works yet in Germany, but they deactivated the remote parking for some models - coupe for example

Regarding your request, colleagues communicate that some features of the Active Parking Assist
(in some cases the parallel parking, in others the perpendicular one) have been deactivated to comply
to the new European regulations on road safety, the EU regulation UN R79 relating to automotive standards and security that will come into force from 2021.
The parent company therefore follows the road safety rules imposed by the European Union.
Regarding the question, if on vehicles where Active Parking works perfectly, this function will be deactivated, colleagues report that based on the information in their possession, in vehicles on the road that have the Active Parking Assist working, this will not be deactivated, as these vehicles have been homologated to have such features.
MB has deactivated Active Park Assist (with driver on board) on the entire range of cars registered in Italy and also in other European countries since September 2020

Ausgereift ist das doch noch nicht. Wenn noch mehr davon unterwegs wären würde es sich an der Einfahrt doch total stauen. Was passiert, wenn halt doch mal jemand ins Auto kracht, während der Besitzer im Flieger hockt? Und bei 2:30 fehlt definitiv die automatische Hupe und eine laute Durchsage über die Auto-Lautsprecher „Mach die Augen auf“ 😂 Aber auf jeden Fall ein Schritt in Richtung autonomen Fahren, Meckern ist ja immer einfach.
