Would you spend an extra £4k over the MG4 Long Range Trophy for this XPOWER version?
YES.XPOWER IS WORTH THE EXTRA MONEY
Yes. Worth it
Totally. Easily.
I would spend it on something that was nicer to be in. Speed is a nice extra but its one of the least usable attributes of a car these days. Jumping off the line is also one of the easiest things to engineer into an electric for headlines and I'm sure most of the people buying these will enjoy very much telling anyone who will listen how its faster than an Etron GT.
You certainly won't see many being hooned about and the choice to cut corners on brakes (sound familiar, Tesla?) shows they aren't really serious about performance - they just went for headline figures to sell cars to simpletons.
Yes more power than a RS3 Audi and much cheaper as Jeremy Clarkson says Power
First the MG4 X-power, next the Cyberster... MG will change people's perceptions of what an EV can be and how much they should cost...!!
Thanks to China's planned economy in electrifying transport of all types since at least 2013
@toyotaprius79 Definitely thanks to China and its vision for cleaner air.
@oxidalpha6350 MG make just 3 models of EV. They are not like Mercedes, BMW, GM etc.... So as they have very few models they make each one efficiently. They have the same work and pay conditions as Tesla (in China). China doesn't outscorce as much as European companies. Batteries are made in China. After all that MG is not actually "So cheap" they are only aligning their EV prices with ICE vehicles. As for the MG4 X-power.... what does it really cost to add a motor and different driver seats? Surely £4,000 is enough?
@@oxidalpha6350True. So SAIC is building new factories in Europe, seems that low income Chinese workers simply aren't enough😂. By the way, SAIC simply cannot compete with other Chinese EV brands in Chinese market so they have to lower the price.
@@mikadavies660Even Tesla in Shanghai couldn't top the Chinese ev market, although they have been selling the world's cheapest M3 and MY
I love what MG are doing. Making the rest of the manufacturers look very stupid.
Bang on the money!
They are doing great things for EV market. They have said they aren't doing an electric MG3 which feels like a mistake. A smaller EV starting in the low twenty thousands is exactly what the market needs
@@bill_heywood I think they will. SAIC is obviously targeting VW in European market despite the fact that they are JV partners in China. MG4 is targeting ID3. By the time VW ID2ALL comes out in 2025, MG3 will be ready.
@@bill_heywood in principle I agree but to have a decent range it would be high twenty's it doesn't cost that much less to make a smaller car especially since the battery would be almost the same size. My guess is they don't see a big enough market for what would be a cheaper leaf . Admittedly if they could do it for 23000 with 150 real world miles with a good finance package I would buy it
@@bill_heywoodI don’t think it’s possible to get a small car with high enough range with current tech
MG have basically made a Golf GTi for the EV generation. Actually insane performance for the money. Consistently under 4 seconds to 60mph for a family hatchback. Incredible.
Well done MG I have to say.
Not quite
It's a 2 tonne behemoth that will struggle to make it one lap around a race track
Won't stop teenagers buying them to try to win boring drag races
Yeah but it just doesn’t have the suspension and handling to be a GTI/ hot hatch
@@The-Salty-Bager yeh? How do you figure that?
@@abraham4961 you didn't see the burning brakes in the video?
@@pastorofmuppets8834 Actually no, but, if that is your problem, I guess for a fraction of the price difference you could probably replace the break discs with ventilated discs. I guess that because of the inferiority of the MG, Audi is trying to get the modular platform from SAIC for Audi's next gen EV's.
The matte green looks lovely to be honest, very premium.
Premium 🤣 I've sat in one of these and the build quality is terrible.
@@mauricetoussaint7283no you haven't
@@mauricetoussaint7283there is a difference between looks and feels
The green is nice but I don’t think the MG4 is much of a looker generally - Back to the design studio I’d say. Even the forthcoming Cyberster looks wrong from some angles particularly from the rear!
@@mauricetoussaint7283 Mit 3 Promille am Stammtisch!! War aber ein Gammel VW.... 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
This is a win for MG either way the fact that it can even compete with cars twice the price is amazing.
Same comment for the late 1990s Impreza WRX. People refused to believe a Japanese hatch could put perform the same year base model Porsche. But it did and this is how you get cult followings
@@fukuoka33 Man they are competing for customers, sales is the name of the game. Do try to follow along.
Nope. Defeated in every metric except straight line acceleration.
no it's not. Price doesnt mean anything if you dont take the whole car into Account. cheap plastic parts and a smaller battery grant a cheaper price that's all and the MG is limited to like 110mph or so while the Audi is way faster on the Autobahn
Who cares?
Crazy performance for the price 😮
Build the MG4 in the UK and let's see if still would be "Crazy performance for the price" .... 😉
@@citynomad13 WELL THEN Thats a good thing .because people can have excellent high performance vehicle for great value 😂
@@citynomad13 build in UK? only makes it more expensive.
@@jianyang6281 and, if UK manufacturing history has any bearing on the subject, far more unreliable.
@@citynomad13 audi isn't made in the UK either
For bringing some fun to electric hot hatches at a more everyday price......its got to be the MG
I do think the Audi has a nicer interior…. but I wouldn’t pay another £36K just for that!
They should compare the cars with all options included, audi will be 3x in price. Nobody buys an Audi with zero options, so those prices are unrealistic.
You forgot the driving dynamics which etron offers, but mg cant even if you pay. That said only money buys etron.
And better brakes, better suspension, better (real life!) range, faster charging, 50 km/h higher top speed, better lights, better NVH, better driving assistances. Not talking down the MG4 at all though, just saying there's a reason for the price difference 🙂
Audi also has worse depreciation, it’s less practical, more expensive to insure, and is much more expensive to service and repair. You keep paying much more for the Audi throughout its life. But you do get an Audi badge on the bonnet to show your neighbours 😂
@@cp4512 That sounds like the kind of reasoning that ends up with everything getting worse.
Save some money on the seats - sounds great until you get a bad back.
Save money on sound insulation - sounds great until you get tinnitus.
Save money on insurance - sounds great until you're in a big crash.
Save money on brakes - sounds great until they fade and you're looking at the back of the truck infront getting closer much more quickly than you wanted.
Save money on car plant worker wages - sounds great until you find yourself having to work for the same wage since everyone was in a race to the bottom.
The reason the American big three went bump wasn't because they couldn't build cars - it was because they were making them to look great on a spec sheet and every corner in between was cut meaning the experience was terrible.
When you're sitting in your "value" car with one bit of you too hot, one too cold, reflections of the dash in the screen, seats that don't support you properly, tupperware plastic everywhere and so many issues with the basics of the design in every area just remember you got what you wished for - at least then you can tell that Audi badge snob your 0-60 time is better than his, right?
The funniest thing is I never see anyone with an Audi, BMW or the rest going on about brands like MG.
Its always a nobody with Napoleon syndrome who wished they had done better in life going on about badges and how a corner cut, built by the lowest bidder spec sheet special is somehow the second coming while anything they can't afford is wasteful and rubbish.
In general I find the people who can command better earnings tend to be less thick which is also why they tend not to have a point to prove and would rather have a better experience than choose something for its price vs 0-60 time.
Even better is that you seem oblivious to the fact that almost all cars these days are on some kind of finance. Some of the deals available on the expensive cars put them within a couple of take-aways per month of the plastic fantastics. They also almost always include free servicing and roadside assistance along with all the rest of the extras you would expect at the price point. Electricity costs a similar amount regardless.
The other and final point which makes you look very green and envious is that if someone can afford the Etron they can almost certainly afford the performance version because the percentage difference in costs is minimal.
In other words if they cared about being able to beat your plastic shoebox off the lights they could simply tick a box on the order form. Most don't because they grew up past the playground stage before getting a degree and a real job.
I would definitely consider the MG good price point
MG has officially made a come back
About the only electric car I'd buy. 36k for 430hp is a bargain, if it drives as well as it goes fast it'll be a step in the right direction for electric performance cars
Wow! MG all day...! Bang for the buks✌️
One thing is for sure, the EV has enabled brands such as MG, Hyundai etc to take it up to the more prestige makes. The EV "revolution" is the great equaliser.
brands? chinese puppets!
There is no revolution, more like a cluster fuck.
As an electric machine, yes. As a car, not even close imo
the MG is on Turanza 005 tyres, these are still not a performance tyres. I'd bet swapping it to the same tyres as the Audi would further improve it.
It s not perfect it s not a bmw it s not an audi , i have the mg4 x power since 3 week, it is the dream for people who have stopped to believe in performance car at a decent price ! Thanks MG !
The the tunning industry will love this car upgraded suspension brakes etc just like yhe 80s & 90s with the golf gti etc
Also should compare performance of car with other sub £40k car
Lichfield version by Christmas ;)
One of many I think
36 grand for a car that hits 60 in 3.6 seconds is crazy good value and it looks cool in that green colour too, I'd have one no question about it , great job by mg, they just need to stiffen suspension up a bit more 👌
In 2 years it will be 18 grand, will the Audi be worth it as a used buy though? However, I would choose the MG4.
And better brakes 😁
Cheap for a reason. If you couldn't care less about quality, driving feel, materials or general design like having air vents which manage to keep you a similar temp all over and not having reflections in the screen then its a great way to tell your mates how fast it can go.
If you actually want to enjoy driving I would suggest doing some test drives first.
I took one out yesterday and while it accelerates well that really is its only good point.
Take that out and its a horrible little plastic box to be in with a poor ride, ropey handling and a feeling that its very obviously had every corner cut to get the headline numbers and price.
The "press car" seemed very well polished too but a poke around the others in the dealership wasn't so great with plenty of paint issues, one with the front carpet coming away from the side and another with half of the rear screen trim hanging off.
I'm sure they will put some glue on them before selling them but it did make me wonder how much else was being covered up under there.

Mg cyBERSTER
The MG4 is great to be honest, this one looks like exactly the kind of thing I would go for
Feels like this is a "test our tech" car. This drivetrain will appear in some bigger more expensive MG models soon to rival M and AMG cars. This gives them a chance to test their power, dynamics and brake tech.
Heart says x power, trips I do says 77Kwh version. Have the trophy now and what an excellent car it is. Previous ICE 2 M135i 2 f82 M4's A35 and CLA35. Just can't hate this little MG4
Are noise levels good in them?
Thank you for giving tribute to the Smart ForTwo electric in a short screenshot but it’s been entirely overlooked because of its two seats and short range. It’s a car that can work on many single or couple households and can now be bought from as little as £8k! Even as second car in a family household I think it makes sense.
We have one as a second car and it’s great.
We have a Smart for four EQ and it is great. Previously had an Abarth 500 (170bhp) and comparable performance, yet faster off the line!
You needn't have assumed the Audi braked better than the MG. Test it!
id get one and stripe the rear interior area, add carbon fiber bonnet, light aero wheels and good tires, add sport suspension... its quick but im curious to see how much quicker could it be after some mods
I have a standard range MG4 and could never justify the additional price just for the Trophy. After all my SE standard range is fractionally quicker to 60mph and it has all the range I need. I think that once again, MG has played an absolute blinder with the X Power (naff name) but you are essentially sitting in the same cabin, looking at the same dashboard whether it be SE, Trophy or X Power. If I actually felt the need for a bit more power, I'd probably rather look at a 12 month old Tesla M3 simply for the change of scenery. My MG4 SE SR has never felt lacking in power and even my wife's Zoe R135 feels quick due to the instant torque an EV offers. Whilst the MG4 has its issues, they really have farted in the faces of the established brands and proved you can make usable, fun EVs without ripping people off.
X Power is an old MG performance brand name from the days when it was still British. I had an MG XT-T 260 V8 with X-power exhaust system.
There are a couple reasons why I spent the extra. I have the Luxury Version (I think that is the EU equivalent to the Trophy version in the UK). The deciding factors for the Luxury Version for me was (1) 3-phase AC charging and (2) the heat pump. Both of them are not included in the Standard Version and at least (1) was a must-have feature for me.
But if I had the capability to charge at home, I can see that I migth be perfectly happy with the Standard Version. In any case: I agree that MG has created a really interesting car. I absolutely love it.
I drive a couple of Toyotas. But once I'm ready for an upgrade, my next car will def be a Chinese EV.
Only if the world doesn't impose sanctions on China like it did for Russia as it's only a matter of time before they invade Taiwan, better just stick to your Toyota's.
Most drivers want a rapib point and squirt car allowing rapid overtakes safely. MG has supplied the solution.
It's crazy the augmentation of the car's power these days.. 10 or 15 years ago 430Hp was super cars or big german sedan power, it was nearly inaccessible for the common people! Hot hatch were around 200hp now with the Inoniq 5 it's 600hp !! What do you think about this all ?
Its crazy isn't. In fact even the basic MG4s have 170 and 200hp! Tbf these cars are heavier than the old hit hatches and such
It's mostly irrelevant. Interesting to know how maxing the start impacts the range. I vaguely recall someone testing a Taycan on track and after 20 odd laps the battery was out of charge.
I think a lot of people with not a lot of car control are going to have very fast cars capable of 0-60 in sub 4 seconds. That worries me. A lot!
@@Buck3366 agree with that
One word. Weight
They should have spent a bit more money on the brakes but overall it's a great addition to the line up. It will certainly upset some drivers of sporty German cars that normally refuse to be overtaken, they will have to stop looking at there rear view mirror and watch this car overtake them. 😂
We aren’t worried about this slow garbage that runs out of puff on a roll . Capped to 124 mph most hot hatches are mapped these days anyways .
Yep on the back of a tow truck.
@@audirs3564 It's ANYWAY. You don't need the S......
Not a chance. I've already had one of these try it on with my RS3 and I destroyed it. Performance isn't just about going fast in a straight line.
Well its a step in the right direction from MG.
😊
Reminds me of the story an old work colleague of mine told me about the boxer Floyd Patterson who's manager, for quite a while, avoided the then challenger Sonny Liston for the heavyweight title. He was better looking and more stylish than the contender but lacked the aggression and hitting power of his potential opponent. Eventually the fight happened, and he got beat!
Well done to MG. I remember driving an MG-F 20+ yrs ago. I felt like stealing the car from my friend!
Sort of proves that there is a lot more to producing a true performance car than shoving in some bigger electric motors. The Kia EV6 is apparently capable of hard track use but is of course a lot more expensive. I could imagine a lot of these MG4s end up in unexperienced hands and end up in hedges
Very impressive, time to have a look at the MG 😊
Currently have a 2021 Audi A3 45TFSIE, placed my order on the XPower for hopefully March delivery 🤞 hope it doesn’t disappoint
£36,495 and 3.6 seconds 0-60. That is an absolute performance bargain
The MG4 XPower is cheaper than many manufacturers entry level cars and blows them away
You should do the drag race against the competition closest to the XPower in price - Born, ID3.3, Megane E-Tech, Niro EV. Those are its real competitors, not expensive Audis and Porsches
But it's still a turd on wheels. No one looking for a decent hot hatch will buy it. There's a lot more to a car than how it moves in a straight line, plus how it looks and the interior, tech and reliability. Even a base spec Golf GTI is ten times better than this thing.
@@mauricetoussaint7283 a Golf GTi costs thousands more and is a lot slower
I guess if you prioritise going slowly and noisily in plusher surroundings, whilst spending a fortune on fuel, then the GTi is ideal 👍
@@bill_heywoodGti remapped would destroy this piece of turd capped at 124 mph lmao most roll races in the real world end up past 110 very quickly .

More power than a RS3 Audi and much cheaper I choose Power all day every day.
Power and silence is not exciting enough, I'd even choose a Miata for fun and performance over any EV, the RS3 is a no brainer over this MG
@@sillimilli3802 I agree to an extent, but as a family car proposition, or a business car proposition, this mg is a great proposition. “Using launch control is super easy” **presenter proceeds to push a series of buttons, prompts and checks**
MG have done an excellent job with the styling on this - looks really good. In the EV world this is great value for the performance on offer and should give some of the bigger brands a fright.
Handling and brakes are woeful. It won't worry anyone in a proper hot hatch.
I'm sure at a later date they will do the bigger battery in the x power as a range topper glass sunroof etc around £40k
I think the demand will out strip supply so it makes sense to sell more of them at the higher price
The issues you mention with the MG4 certainly don't amount to anything like the £30K+ price differential against a 'speedy' equivalent . Especially as even the most avid speed merchants amongst us don't drive at 10/10ths all the time.
I really don't understand the press obsession with EV range and acceleration. The thing is that in the UK the maximum speed limit on public roads is just 70 mph and when using a car in everyday conditions not only is it unlikely ever to have the need to scream away from a standing start but also it will be difficult to even get up to 20 and 30 mph speed limits in towns.
And as we often see, the idiots trying to drive it like they stole it often end up stacking it instead primarily due to a significant lack of talent.
The same of course applies to petrol and diesel cars and their respective drivers.
Why aren't cars assessed by their practicality and functionality and not by their rank stupidity?
The standard mg4 humiliates most cars.
Also over steer. It does over steer!
wow... a few years ago, this is is unthinkable with that much of a price gap...
I never understand "preparing the launch control" - click , this, drag this, press this, ....... So what do I do to overtake something ?
I think I prefer a car that give you full power to overtake.
The top spec' MG Cyberster has a 0-60 speed of 2.6 seconds. Lets see something take that on!
At 36k for all that power its a bargain for sure. What is the ride quality like compared to premium cars is there much road feedback in the cabin etc?
Good drag race!! The blinking Audi was nearly as slow as a bus!! Give me the MG4 X-Power any day!!
Not a fair comparison - it's well known that red cars are slower.

Nothing finer than dumping a 90 grand sports car at the lights in your 1.3 L fiesta. Or whatever the modern equivalent is let’s say an MG4 AWD
Spoiler Alert…the callipers are not painted, they are plastic covers which shroud the original callipers!! Amazing value for money all the same.
I am not an Audi fan at all, but I really like the looks of the Audi E-tron GT. Looks way better than any other Audi, the R8 included.
That said, what completely put me off on the GT is the choice Audi made for the trunk lid hinge. These are so stupidly cheap and simple that at that point I concluded that the Audi engineers involved simply did not really try to make something special.
I have had a Honda NSX for many years and there the trunk lid hinge is a beautiful engineered piece that basically disappears when folded. And that was designed 34 years ago.
So basically, if MG (SAIC) decided to make a car costing as much as Gerry car, it would probably wipe them off the face of the earth.
BTW Audi is negotiating with SAIC to use their modular platform for their next gen EVs
The end of the super cars, the beginning of the just... cars.
MG is knocking some sense back into "established" car manufacturers. They have gotten too arrogant, too comfortable, too greedy.
Great performance- just slightly concerning that the brakes are guff as are the standard tyres. With over 400hp it really needs to harness the power much better

No wonder the rumor is out that Audi is buying an EV platform from SAIC
When doing acceleration tests can you also try them without launch control to see the difference?

Also, interesting how, at about 12:20 in to the video, where you're describing the front-end feel on slippery roads with camber, you say that the steering tugs - but, that's exactly the feel that most 80s front-wheel-drive hot-hatches gave enthusiastic drivers, so I think that's a good thing and adds character to this MG4 X-Power. 👍
I agree. It’s part of the fun.
@@ThrottleBody i quite like a little torque weave if space allows
Totally agree, I want that. I’ve got an Abarth Competizione currently and it does that, it’s a bit old school. Also had a Nissan Leaf and even that did it, it was one of the few good things about the Leaf!
Ive done 25k in a mg5. And it is faster from 20-90 that most big germans. And they dont like it at all. Mg have sussed it. Now this. No contest its "seiko.. beware of expensive imitations" .
I see Neil is wearing a Seagull 1963 chronograph. As a fellow watch collector that is instant street cred right there. 😀
At last, someone finally gets it! :)
How much tyre damage do you get with this kind of acceleration? It would also be interesting to see how the MG performs up against the BYD Dolphin with and without launch control engaged. A sort of test to prove which is the quickest suburban runabout /shopping trolley.
The base mg4 is slower than the dolphin. I have the dolphin and I've had the MG4. I've had the dolphin timed at 6.3 in cold 5 degrees weather and the MG4 is slower. I was going to go for the xpower but driven hard the range drops dramatically!!
Wow! Basically MG4 XPower is family hatchback and significantly more affordable vehicle. Imagine how embarrassing it will be for many arrogant rich people driving expensive ICE vehicles when an ordinary electric family car humiliates them in daily traffic...! It will be fun... MG4 is changing the game...The only drawback is that the MG4 is not available in all European countries. Only this saves the management of Volkswagen from a very big humiliation...
The MG4 is insane for the price
An extremely nice come back for MG, looking forward to the brand.
And this is the issue High End Car makers are going to have...no USP. You don't buy an Audi Etron GT for the interior..you buy for the Performance...an A6 has a Nice interior! So once you lose your USP (Quattro, Turbo, 5 cylinders etc etc) you become the same as everyone. And now you can have the same performance at a 1/3rd of the cost.....
It seems a bargain at £36k, and I like the colour, this would be at the top of my EV shortlist. I want to see some reviews for the Xpeng G6 as I think that will be another contender.
Expect G6 will cost more, which is understandable
