We believers have a lot of work to do to be “a light to the nations.” What does the world see when it looks at Christians? Legalism, division, exclusion? We need to turn that around with the help of the Holy Spirit.
Dr Wright's teaching this evening has helped to shed more light on my understanding of what salvation is as I read thro' his "Justification" (2009/2016). Admittedly it's far harder to unlearn what I had been taught for the last 4 decades and to hear something with scriptural integrity and contextual to Paul's time. With big appreciation to Dr Wright.
@jawajab5173 We understand the challenge it is to unlearn and relearn at the same time. It takes patience and a ready mind. Admirato is the home of N.T. Wright Online where we offer in-depth self-paced online courses and a study community with whom to engage. While all recorded courses are availble at any time, our community choses one to go through together live over Zoom. We are currently going through N.T. Wright's new course on Romans 8, "The Heart of Romans". If you are interested in focused study in a community, please know you are welcome. You can find more information here: www.admirato.org/
Thanks for adding actual captions for the Deaf - makes it really clear. Paul wring in Romans has been a special part of new testament, along with Isaiah in the old testament
I think this series would be incomplete if there wasn't mention of the coming wrath of God, how those who are in Christ will be saved from it, and how it fits into the biblical story of salvation that is being presented. Being saved from God's wrath seems very relevant to a series on salvation, and I, personally, don't know if I understand those parts of the New Testament that mention it (1 Thessalonians, for example). I imagine others might be in the same boat. Very educational and well done series so far! Looking forward to the remainder of the videos!

Thank you tons, Dr. Wright, for your "big picture" perspective on Salvation! As early as high school, i had issues with the Western - or largely midwestern American - simplistic salvation message. It made no sense that salvation meant mere rescue from hell - it seemed we'd be better off if God took us to "heaven" as soon as we were saved. And all this blather about leaving us here to "be a witness" - seemed to me that even "redeemed" humans throughout the centuries have been pretty rotten "ambassadors for Christ." The angels would have done a better job, it seemed to me. Then a mis-teaching that equated God's wrath with hatred led to the conclusion on my part that they were saying God hates the unregenerate sinner and only loves the "saved!" My gut told me this was totally wrong; I recoiled from the obvious contradiction to John 3:16, etc. as well as the sheer illogic - I knew God loved His creation, all of it. As an adult, venturing into a non-western culture, I swiftly realized my "gospel" had few touchpoints with my new environment and my task became to disentangle the gospel from my culture and discover what is at its core - what is the Message that speaks to every people. It's been a long road; I'm still on it. Yet, thanks to your input and that of others, I'm seeing a little clearer picture of who this God is and what He's up to in this lovely, messy world. Again, thanks.

Dr Wright, with due respect, I have a question or perhaps an idea about the resemblance in the image of God who in scripture is identified with human beings. But some academics affirm that angels are also the image of God. Taking into account that the scripture dispenses with this statement, my question would be the following: Is it possible that the angels of Yahweh are the image of the Living God? Thank you very much if it is possible, and if it is not possible to answer me, thank you very much anyway
@flematicoreformandose5046 Thank you for your insightful question. On Admirato.org, the home of N.T. Wright Online, there is a free discussion space where members discuss topics such as this. @@NTWrightOnline Of course, Dr Wright, it would be interesting to pose the question, since putting the cards on the table would help us academics and non-academics alike to clarify something that, although it is not literally stated in the scripture, there is a possibility of studying the activities of angelic beings such as emissaries of the Divine Word, protectors of human beings, and executors of the Creator's justice. It is as if an image of the Creator is glimpsed through the aforementioned angelic activities. Thank you very much for answering me Dr Wright, and I congratulate you on your insightful work. 👍
No where in the Bible does it say hint or imply that the way of rescue for the world is through human beings. We are saved from judgement. What is salvation? It’s becoming a new creature the moment we trust in Christ and God gives us His righteousness and declares us not guilty.
The Christian religion owes it's Initiation on ONE Jewish man, who understood Isaiah 49 that God needed to create a *Superhighway for souls* because Israel was little and the need was great. Jesus saw his Mandate in Isaiah's scriptures. There were at that time no Christian texts and the first by Paul were challenged by Luke (Who wanted to give a better account) and who confronted the premise that _There is only one life_ in Luke 20:34-38 also that Judgment is reserved for those who become celestial children.
If by God's Holy Ghost thou art beguiled, There will be born in thee the Eternal Child. If it's like Mary, Virginal and pure, Then God will impregnate your soul for sure. God make me pregnant, and his Spirit shadow me, That God may rise up in my soul and shatter me. What good does Gabriel's 'Ave, Mary' do Unless he give me that same greeting too? _Ephraim the Syrian_
The creation he is talking about is Adam. Christ is the second Adam. In Christ the new creation is redeemed. The new creation is the new covenant. We are in the New Covenant. The New Jerusalem. Death has been defeated. It's death via breaking covenant. Rescue means renewed covenant. It's not bodily resurrection. It's resurrection of Israel. Who was dead. Resurrected in Christ. A new body. Body of believers. Creedilism is such a stumbling block.
All it takes is that you are able to read, the Catholic Church cannot save it is the Word of the Lord alone that makes this possible. Read your Bible *All judgement is given to the Son* neither Jesus nor God the Father have any import, neither Mary nor any of the saints it is the remit of the Word of God, this is *not Jesus* and Judgement is not a Trinitarian event. We may see Jesus after judgement as the *Beatific Vision* in which God the Father is visible in Him, but as for salvation being the purpose of the Church that is false, it purpose is to administer the sacraments, the judgement is performed by the Spirit of Truth who is the Word of the Lord as the *Glittering great two edged sword*
We believers have a lot of work to do to be “a light to the nations.” What does the world see when it looks at Christians? Legalism, division, exclusion? We need to turn that around with the help of the Holy Spirit.
The Lord Jesus Christ isn’t a little story that fits within another. It’s THE story.
This man is a gift from God.

Creation is subject to corruption becaus of SIN and not just because God has allowed it.

N.T.W.s definition of sin is not found in the Bible. Sin is rebellion again God and so on.

These old trinitarians are really weird.
