The Romans Road: Through the Dark Valley, N.T. Wright

  • Preachers have often expounded Paul’s Letter to the Romans in terms of a “road” to salvation in which we acknowledge our sin, recognize the death of Jesus as God’s remedy, and then “believe” - and that’s about it!
But the “Romans Road” is longer, and darker than that. That’s just as well. Our pathways often lead through dark valleys, both individually and globally, as we see just now with the pandemic not yet over and a new barbaric war in eastern Europe threatening us all.
Paul gives us the road map for just such a time in Romans 8: 18-30, including a fresh vision of prayer and of the Spirit's work. Strangely, it is in the dark valley that we are called to discern, and even to share, something vital about the inner life of God himself.

I won't pretend I understood everything in this lecture - (I barely scraped through my O Levels),, but it has given me renewed hope that when I want to pray about the evil things that go on in this world, & I don't know what to pray, Jesus & the Holy Spirit are interceding for me, & Father God is searching the depths of my heart to see what is actually going on. Thank you N T Wright. ❤

@@celenecranenburgh9566 Ha! Ha! Good joke. Americans often seek simplified content. For an American listener, it requires an academic background in biblical theology, a comprehension of theological language, diligence, patience, and perseverance to interpret and absorb this "full-bodied, professorial," biblically referential discourse or verbal treatise. The American mind is not as accustomed to lectures from professors. This is rich and deep. Many simply run into intellectual roadblocks and tune out.
He is also an Anglican speaking to U.S. Protestants. That requires another intellectual adjustment. If people say they are "bored," it is more likely a need to make several intellectual adjustments that people need to make a commitment to.

Charles Packwood, I agree, it requires a leisurely intellectual approach that we Americans are not accustomed to. We long for the short summary to see if it interests us enough to go back to devote the time and effort to invest.
It took me several years of listening and reading his work before I could overcome those hurdles. The benefit is that he draws from European Catholic scholars, not merely historical Protestantism. His knowledge ranges across continents and historical theological developments and Books of the Bible to deliver intellectual academic content. I often mostly want to wade through the historical preamble and hope I am still not numbed out to catch the "nuggets." I still have to rewind. It is scholarly, and not only is that not my customary style, neither is it the style of those whom I teach. I used to want an Americanized version. However, the Holy Spirit keeps drawing me back and saying "there is gold here."

      Theology is weak sauce
One might expect a deity, if there were such a thing, would be known by everyone or is fudging the title a bit.
The fraud of religious people is revealed by the failure rate of prayers in a children's hospital & the lack of mountains moving by verbal commands.
Theologians grant themselves the title without any input from a deity & then use fantasyland vocabulary in academic settings, usually as a podium jockey with clergyman dress.
But if I can't use my weak argument, then I don't have an argument at all.
Those arguing God, get their knowledge of deity from the same place they get understanding of reason.
Rather than a beacon of inspirational light, they are avoided like the old woman with too many cats. It was secular law & order ending the inquisitions & witch killing. Nothing fails like prayer in a children's hospital & even Jesus Christ proclaims faith is worthless if you can't get magic mountains to move when you practice verbal-command landscaping. No wonder Freud wrote the antidote to Christianity is literacy. These are the wolves in sheep's clothing, you know them by their works: Who has honor while suggesting a reality-God? As if we did not have the saying: God helps those helping themselves, because the fiction is known for a perfect record of nothing-doing. Moreover, it cannot be moral or ethical to suggest there is a god. As if one should respect the suggestion, we all travel with one foot in fantasyland, using a fantasyland vocabulary. It is religious vocabulary fascism finds useful. Law is authorized from fantasyland & the workings are a mystery, unknown to the non-believers among the oppressed.
I grew up in line to be sent to fight in the "Vietnam Conflict."
      I don't expect much from the national bomb-factory, so I don't vote.
I tell people to consider this a prison without bars.

Full Circle: In the beginning... Genesis 1: Good creation. Very good! No pain. No violence. No bloodshed. Love. Real peace. Even all non-humans eat plants! In the end... The New Heavens and New Earth come into fullness, completeness, wholeness, a return to how things are meant to be, supposed to be, created to be, love covering all. In everything everywhere all around in every direction... Shalom! Shalom! Shalom! All of creation groans because of the ugliness in these in-between times, the tension (!), eagerly waiting. I know I groan. All the violence against one another, non-humans, and the planet itself weighs heavily on the heart. Right relationship in all things, as seen in the good creation, in the beginning, as all is made to be, meant to be, should be... May it come quickly! Thy Kingdom come. Mission statement. Bishop Wright has a profound knowledge of Scripture, but the Unbeliever disagrees with the Bishop on the foundation of Christianity, the Resurrection. The Bishop believes the Resurrection is everything. The rational thinking atheist believes it has no meaning. A Resurrection first requires a dead body, which was provided by the Crucifixion,(although many believe this could have been provided for by other means). in Luke 23 verse 34 Jesus says to his Father " Forgive them for they know not what they do". In other words The mob had committed a sin in crucifying Jesus, which required forgiveness. Here is the contradiction. The Christian believes the Crucifixion was a necessary act to "Purge the World of its sin" but required an act of sin to make this possible. This is why we regard the Resurrection as meaningless. Perhaps the Bishop could give us his views.

    • @brianlewellen6737
      @brianlewellen6737 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That's a very good question. It's encouraging to see people really care about scripture enough to ask it hard questions. Throughout the whole Bible, God uses the sin of man to accomplish the works of God. One of the most popular stories is of Joseph and his brothers sin against him, by selling him into slavery. Many more sinful things happen to Joseph, but through these events, God is able to save Israel from a horrible famine. This story is a picture of who Jesus was to be. He was condemned to death, though he had not sinned. This was a sin, you're right on that mark, but it was expected to be. Man meant the cross for evil, but God meant it for good, as was prophesied in Genesis:
"I will put enmity between you and the women, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel." - Genesis 3:15 ESV

He is the creator and designer of all things, and organizes created to work how he chooses. The clay has no right to tell the potter he is doing a bad job. Romans 9:21 (ESV) Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for dishonorable use?
Look at Job, who through unbearable suffering and excruciating turmoil questioned God and his purposes. This was God's response:
"Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements-surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it?" - Job 38:4-5
When God was finished, Job finished with:
“I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted. Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?’ Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know." Job 32:2-3

Jesus was crucified for being king of the Jews. When he rose from the dead he was still king and has never ceded his power, so anyone claiming to be in charge of Israel who is not Jesus is illegitimate. Does the modern nation of Israel reflect the love of Christ returning good for evil? Jesus victory is through love not war. The new Jerusalem comes down from heaven and the new temple is God’s people and is built by God and not by human hands. Once Jesus was enthroned as king there is no room for surrogate leaders, at this time he rules from heaven.

Hopefully, Anglicanism will die soon. Wright's understanding of Romans is always substantially underdone as from an institution of the English government that does not permit St Paul to speak from the historical situation of the catholic church in Rome. St Paul was a catholic bishop and priest contrary to Wright's presuppostions and faith alone does not exist within St Pauls's letters.
NT Wright is not an ordained bishop of the Anglican church, but a lay theologian of the English government who fabricated the 39 articles of faith. The articles are so flawed the Anglicans are forced to believe God has revealed the Catholic mass is a superstition whilst holding to a contrived version sola scriptora. And nowhere does the scriptures teach the catholic mass is a superstition, nor the English monarch is the head of any church.
So much for the heresy of Anglicanism.
