  • I think that upgrading your camera every time a new model is released can hurt your photography and I guess it did hurt my photography. In this video, I´ll tell you why.

But i am a passionate traveller as well - check out my website krumes.com for photos i´ve made on my journeys to Myanmar, Japan, Vietnam, Korea, Bangladesh, USA or China. I´ve been shooting Street Photography for nearly 20 years now. In 2016 i started to teach Street Photography workshops. I had solo and group exhitibions in Germany, Austria, Hungary and Italy, published my first Street Photography book "Immerse light, embrace shadows" last year and was juror for international photo contests. This channel is for all Street Photography beginners and pros - if you have any requests for future videos, please leave a comment - very curious about your opinions. Brilliant - thank you! I have just picked up my X-T20 after a 5 year hiatus from photography - and I am falling in love with photography all over again, but keep being tempted by all the shiny new cameras. This is a perfect pep talk to remind me to get to know my perfectly good enough (more than good enough!) camera and use that money I would waste on new gear for some family days out/day trips where i can shoot with my X-T20 and get to know it again :)

    I made a purchase a couple of years ago that drove home the pointlessness of chasing specs. It was a camera with great autofocus, speedy operation and excellent image quality. A year later I gave it to my son. All of that technology made for a soulless device which sapped the enjoyment out of the process (and I often found myself paused by what AF mode I need for this or that situation). My small flock of 16MP m4/3 cameras give me the enjoyment I want with the image quality I need, nothing more, nothing less. Thanks for the anti-GAS!

    Lovely shots with your X100T, demonstrates the points you made perfectly. I reached my own law of diminishing returns re camera features and capability with Fuji models from 2018 and earlier. It's been quite liberating to remove myself from the consumerist/social media driven upgrade cycle and concentrate on my actual photography with tools that I know satisfy my personal requirements. It also means I'm also not having to constantly upgrade my computer hardware, software or storage capabilities, another expensive side effect of the upgrade cycle. The only rare consumer action I indulge in now, the upgrade cycle benefitting me rather than costing me, is looking out for cheap deals on lightly used versions of the older models I prefer, to tuck away and future proof my photography for at least hopefully another decade.

    Great video. This is the point I would like to eventually get across on my channel. I agree 100 percent with you. It takes time to get to know the camera. If we continually upgrade or get new gear, we don't have time to master the tools we already have.

    Thank you for saying this. You are correct. Just don't tell the cult of Fuji, Leica and Ricoh, or you will be publicly hung, drawn and quartered by fanboys all foaming at the mouth! It's very easy though to get sucked into this mentality. On social media you are almost ignored for not having the latest version and if you do have the latest, often poor photography will be passed as good just because it happened to be shot on a GRIII or whatever. It's even worse with image recipes. Recipes have become more important than the image subject! It's crazy! Again it's easy to be drawn into this sort of mentality, just in hope for a little recognition.

    Aloha.....🙂

    First time here in your channel. I basically agree with you, but you may have forgotten other variables. There are people who can afford upgrading gear whenever they want, as they upgrade their cars at every other year. Some people can not only upgrade to the last model but also pay for a trip to Antarctica or any other place. So the tradeoff between gear and travel may apply to you, but not for everyone. Also, depending on the photography genre, a better camera can deliver better results. A landscape photographer might find value in a medium format Hasselblad because of the level of detail that it provides. A wildlife photographer might "need" that 600mm prime which costs 12k USD. So although I basically agree with you, I also think that there are other factors to take into consideration. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Cheers!

    Man Great video and a point I try and make with anyone interested in Photography. Just go take thousands of photos. Although I do really enjoy some of the features and ease of ability on my newest body. I am also the guy who last year bought a 7 plus year old camera just to try and wear out. LOL I love taking photos even if they are not great to others even the poor ones can take me back in time where I froze history for me to revisit. It is the only time travel I have and wish I would have used it more.

    I have to enjoy using the camera, just as it should be easy to use and lenses can be changed. I've tried a few. you can also say that the tuition fee has been paid. I ended up getting a newer model with a manual lens. This combination will remain, no matter what advertising tries to convince me

    I have at least $11-12K in gear sitting in a very nice camera backpack in my closet. This had turned into about 30+ lbs of stuff to carry on a workshop in Iceland last fall. While I came back with some good shots, no question, the ones I submitted to a competition were taken inside an ice cave with an iPhone (easier to maneuver). Don’t get me wrong - I love my R5 and I’m pretty demanding of build quality - yet here I am, checking out gear porn on YT instead of going outside with just a body and a lens and shooting every day. Maybe if it starts to get warmer?

    The need / want to upgrade to new gear is so tempting, but at the end of the day a new camera won't improve your photography. I currently use a Leica MP240, its classed as "old" but I dont care, I love how its stripped down with no fancy features etc and its down to me to capture the exposure, not the camera. With that being said, I can honestly say the best digital camera's I've used were the original Fuji X100 and the Fuji XE2, those are modern camera's with a true "film like souls". The newer Fuji camera's are just jam packed with feature which just take control away from the photographer.

    Hey Oliver, thanks for another great video of wisdom, and what a funny coincidence: Although having to admit I've ordered a X100VI as well (but never had one of the series before), last week I bought my first analog film for more than 25 years, because about 2 weeks ago a "stray" Ricoh XR7 from 1982 has adopted me somehow and I was amused and astonished alike how much I still like it to shoot film. When seeing the results yesterday it reminded me of comparing vinyl records vs. CDs - and I've bought another two rolls immediately. The only sad point about film today is the price: For about 250 rolls of film including development one can buy a Leica Q3. ;-) BTW: Your mike setup is not optimal, because the volume sways up and down while your are moving in front of it (nothing dramatic, just wanted to let you know). 🖖{edit: polished some of my "Germish".}

    I have a collection of early 00’s cameras with adapters for my collection of mid 20th century lenses. That’s an infinite number of possibilities for an overall very low price. Now the prices for this kind of gear has gone through the roof … anyway, my point is I don’t need a really expensive highly complex modern camera when I can already produce excellent work.

    Oliver, I complete ly agree with your premise. I own a Leica M100p, but over the years, I have take my best photos with my IPhone. It’s always with me, and catches the moments. That said, I do believe it is human nature to be drawn to the newest and greatest in the hope that it will make us better photographers. As it turns out, it doesn’t.

    If people can why not? I am not a pro and I am in a third world country, but even so I get cameras for sheer pleasure as it is not necessarily about getting better photos but having more joy while photographing, so if I can manage my expenses to get one camera you in a developed country surely can too. I am saving a bit each time I can to get this camera, I won't stop using my Fujifilm X100S, I love its colors. At most I will probably give it to one of my brothers, but I still use a film Fujifilm DL SuperMini, a Canon EOS 7, and my cellphones. The only camera I don't use is a Sigma DP2 which is so painful to process to get the most of it.

      @acrummey85 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree that there is joy in the tools as well as the results. You seem to be getting joy from the process, not buying cameras to mystically make you a better photographer. I am much like you, on my limited budget I buy older cameras that offer a new experience, not better pictures. The pictures are my responsibility, the camera just has to make it fun.

  • @martingreenberg870
    @martingreenberg870 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    The camera doesn’t make the image. The photographer makes the image.
    Having a camera with the features you need helps make the image. Maybe you are arguing that we should throw our cameras away and go back to using pencils, charcoal, water colors, or oil.
    I preordered the X100vi. This will be the last camera I purchase new. I’m retired and on a fixed budget. I will own the X100vi and use it for at least two iterations. I might be dead before then. Who knows? The last body I purchased was a Panasonic GX8. At least a seven year old camera. A real feature packed body for a low price. A month ago I purchased the Panasonic 20mm pancake lens. Small. Lightweight. A perfect pairing. The focal length is a Goldilocks lens. No more gear acquisition for a while.
    Will more megapixels make me a better photographer? I don’t routinely zoom in. Will IBIS make me a better photographer? Maybe. I have essential hand tremor and have to use a faster shutter speed to compensate. Having IBIS will allow me to take jitter free video clips. So the quality of my video will be better because of this feature. Having a lens at the focal lengths I like is important to me. Having a mirrorless body helps me in my composition. I have 10 year old cameras without these features. It is more fun using a body with better features.
    I am not willing to go back to using a film camera. The film, processing, and printing is expensive. Every time I press the shutter it co$ts in excess of a dollar whether I like the image or not. As a street and ICM photographer my rate of acceptable images is 2-5%. I’d have to give up photography in that case.
    Too your point. The time to consider purchasing a new camera is when you’ve outgrown your present body. Not many of us meet that criteria. The X100VI will be my EDC. It has the features I need and want. This purchase isn’t being fed by a GAS attack. I love when a new body comes out. That means some more older bodies become available at a better price than when new. Except, of course, some Fuji bodies. I do not buy used gear at a premium.

    I am totally agree with you. Nobody needs a better camera to take better photos but sometimes a new camera motivates you to go out and take more photos. Leica guys spend 6000 $ in a compact Leica camera and start talking about how much better are the new photos they take with it, the "soul" of the new photos. And i feel sorry for them. They confirm they don´t know anything about photography but they have too much money. I am not a Leica hater. My point is if you buy a Leica camera talk about how it motivates you to go out, but not talk about soul and how much better your photos are.

    • @streetphotographyguy
      @streetphotographyguy  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I absolutely agree. I had a chat once with a Leica Club founder who left the club after telling the 50 members that only 2 of them could take photos which were in a good relation to the price they paid for their Leicas...yes, it's sad when the choice between a Leica and a Porsche feels like pure coincidence and has nothing to do with a pure passion for photography...

    • @rathol6765
      @rathol6765 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This is nonsense. Talking indiscriminately about the camera experiences of Leica users without having any experience with Leica cameras oneself.
      I have been photographing for decades with various cameras (Nikon, Ricoh, Fuji). Since I started photographing with Leicas, my photos have improved because the camera handling, which is reduced to the essentials, allows me to focus much more on the composition of the photos. Moreover, it's simply enjoyable to hold a piece of elegant design in your hands. Why is there this perpetual Leica bashing? I believe it can only be explained psychologically.
      But what does the oak care if the pigs rub against it?

      @@rathol6765 I can understand your arguments because you are talking about your photography improvement due to a bigger motivation for going out and shoot. I respect that. I don´t respect when Leica guys start talking about the mystical properties of their expensive cameras and how INSTANTLY they make better photos and are better photographers. The only way of improvement is you. If you go out and shoot, you think about photography, you think about composing, then you are going to make better photos. If a Leica camera pull you to do this, i respect that.

      My best (digital) images came from 1st generation Olympus m4/3 cameras. The E-PL1 with the (rather pedestrian) 17mm f2.8 gave me great images because I had to work for them. Better tools may make work easier, but the quality of the final product is up to the worker, not the tools. Clearly there are areas of photography which require special tools, but the label on the front is mostly immaterial.
