H. is my favorite song off this album, lyric-wise. The song is about the birth of Devo H Kennan, where Maynard expresses fear of generational traumas being passed down to his newborn son and the serpent whispers doubts and fears into his ears about whether he is fit for the task of being a father.
This is my favorite tool album. It came out my senior year of high school, we waited outside the store until they opened so I could get it and we listened from beginning to end over and over lol! Also his name is pronounced May-nerd ☺️ love the reaction too!
@@bschuler6216 Dude Lateralus came after that. I heard there are different genes for what music you like because that's the only thing that makes sense for me. Lateralus is my favorite album of all time up there with pink floyd.
@@bschuler6216 I just don't get it. Sounds like you like their angry stuff. I prefer the more profound psychedelic sound of Lateralus. I mean it's got grudge the patient, parabola schism lateralus and disposition reflection and triad. It's incredible. Aenima is incredible too but is lacking in the number of top tier songs. Only 46 & 2, Aenema, are up to lateralus level with maybe Eulogy and 3rd eye very close. Maybe stink fist a little below that but everything else I just don't find is the same level musically. Lyrically sure but It's just not as good in my opinion though I guess I can see how depending on your disposition you could prefer it.

Almost all Tool lyrics are metaphorical. If you try to interpret them literally, you'll miss the point. Stinkfist is not about fisting. Eulogy is not about Christ. Maynard uses common and/or provocative ideas and imagery to connect to something specific to him or that he observes in himself, others, or society in general. Keep listening, keep pondering, keep digging. It's an enlightening journey that also kicks ass sonically.
Aenima is a combination of Anima and Enema. Anima (the spirits that animate man) the feminine spiritual component of a man's inner soul. There is also the Animus - the masculine side of the inner woman's soul. Enema the tube thing you use to clean shit out of your colon. The song combines all these concepts.
I was 13 or 14 years old when my dad brought home this album. He blasted it throughout the house for a solid year, keep in mind my dad isn’t what you would think of when you think Tool fan. Shortly after I saw them for the first time at lolapalooza 96’ and became completely hooked. 25+years and a dozen or so shows later and tool holds a place in my heart that is only shared by one other band. They are an experience. I love watching people discover tool, always puts a smile on my face. What I would give to be able to start that journey over again…
Nice! Yeah I was in Mansfield MA. I was only 14 but even back then I knew I was seeing something special. I’m 40 now and still get that same feeling every time I throw in a Tool album
As others have said, Stinkfist is not about fisting, and Eulogy is likely not about Jesus. Both use the imagery as metaphors for something else. Stinkfist about our constant need for stimulation and how that gets out of control, Eulogy is in general about those with martyr complexes who put themselves up above others, like L Ron Hubbard more specifically.
My interpretation of Jimmy, is Maynard singing to his younger self (His real name is James Maynard Keenan), meeting with his younger self at the time when he was 11 and his mother had her anuerism. His inner child has been standing there all these years waiting for his mother to come back for him, so his adult self goes back to find that inner child within himself and provide the comfort that he's needed his entire life.
The title Ænima is a combination of the words 'anima' (Latin for 'soul' and associated with the ideas of "life force", and a term often used by psychologist Carl Jung) and 'enema', the medical procedure involving the injection of fluids into the rectum.
Great reaction vid. This album changed my music taste forever. Every other band has sounded ordinary to me ever since this album came out. Never got old either, still listen to it as much today as back then. Just changes my mood completely. Masterpiece work of art. Brilliant from start to finish.
1:05:00 I was one of those kids who was always like an adult and had to grow up fast, I've had a very hard life and I've survived things that other people wouldn't. I don't have the time to go into more detail at the moment, but I can share my story with you sometime T if you'd like. I appreciate your channel bro, you're one of the few genuine people on TH-cam.
Bro, listening to this album and going on this journey was incredibly deep. Hearing Maynard’s story on how he’s preserved through life is truly intriguing. It’s no surprise that many of his fans feel connected to his struggle. I would love to hear your story. As I said in the video, life can be difficult and will try to break you but I commend everyone who has made it through tough times. It only builds character and makes you stronger.
Saw this albumn on tour at the Atlanta international ballroom you can find that concert on TH-cam it's crazy to go back and watch it now almost 30 years later
Third eye is about his own psychedelic experience with peyote and that’s a perfect way to say it this album is tools transition into spirituality through MJKs own personal experiences as where lateralus is a spiritual experience but through the stages of kabbalism which is basically taking you through the stages of chakras to reach the crown and discover new enlightenment lateralus is easily the deepest and emotional filled album ever made but Ænima is 2nd for sure then FI
I love when people take things so literal, I never did when I first got into this album so it's just a trip hearing it all from a different perspective. Thanks!
Obviously there’s a lot of Jesus symbolism and metaphors going on in Eulogy. They often use that story to connect it to other people. I thought that it was literally about Jesus for a long time but I’ve heard more than one member of the band say that it’s about L Ron Hubbard: founder of Scientology. Just my 2 cents. ✌🏼
Yes. One of there first shows as a group was at an Scientology event where they threaten the group and told them what to play. One thing about TOOL is never threaten their artistic expression or freedom of speech. There is video from this show where TOOL is obviously performs as they want
A LONG time ago, in my teens, I was hanging out in my room with this album playing while looking through one of my metal magazines. Suddenly, I heard a bee buzzing around my head. I jumped up from my bed and was ready to swat it into the next life when I realized it was the buzzing noise from the beginning of Third Eye.
Jimmy, Push It, Third Eye. This is my favorite album mainly because this is the first roller coaster ride I took with them. I m a huge Tool fan. I got to see them on Halloween night after they released Fear Inoculum album.
Im not sure if it has been said in interviews with Maynard or not, but Eulogy is possibly/probably about the founder of the Church of Scientology, L. Ron Hubbard
Great video T! Wish I'd been here for the stream. @ 20:57, to my ear that sound is a chisel striking stone i.e. writing the Eulogy. Aenima would have to be my all-time favourite Tool song. It was the second song I'd ever heard of theirs and the first I truly laughed with. The sarcasm (followed by millions of dumbfounded dipshits), (learn to swim) is on par in this song - I love it.
I can relate and absolutely concur with your summary on how everyone 'sells out' once they find responsibility! Before I decided CVD lockdown was the right time for me to "retire"; I worked for over 20 years as a design engineer, primarily, specializing in high-risk coastal construction projects...most of that time, I even managed to be my own boss if you ignore that, when you have your own business, the clients are actually the boss!
Oh, here's a bit of fun trivia; when I was doing complex calc or CAD - I often listened to an album or playlist of Tool... they're an excellent music choice if you need to remain alert and extremely focused for an extended time period!
He's not just telling them to Learn to Swim metaphorically. The song is a prayer for a giant earthquake to sink not just Los Angeles but all of California into the sea - anyone who lives here knows that California overdue for a supermassive earthquake that they call "The Big One" which will be the next major San Andreas fault slippage. See you down in Arizona Bay, predicting beachfront property for Arizonans - also an homage to the late Bill Hicks who was a good friend of Maynard's. Maynard actually did leave Los Angeles and now lives in Arizona where he makes wine and runs restaurants.
Love your reactions! My personal fav of this album is pushit.. by a mile.. Heard 'm play it live 8 months ago and it sounded so good.. Hey brotha, have you ever heard of Byzantine? If you haven't, I would highly recommend their music video for "Soul Eraser". I describe Byzantine as a Progressive Groove Metal band with some Thrash and Metalcore elements in some of their songs, they're a pretty experimental band who has a variety in their style. If that sounds interesting to you, please check them out. Great video as usual T!
Human genome has 44 chromosomes+ the 2 sex chromosomes (X&Y). Carl Jung theorized that man would evolve to 46&2 seeing that certain primates were 42&2.
Man Julian, how much did you pay to sponsor a full album reaction lol? I was going to join T's Patreon but I'm in a bad situation financially right now, I wanna join when I get back to work because I've got lots of great Modern Thrash suggestions!
Another Track From This Album Was “Cesaro Summability”. To In Which It Has The Baby Cry In It. Which I’ve Recognized That Baby Cry Sound Effect In The Episode of Goosebumps “Strained Peas”, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Mirror Mirror (2012) & Penelope. I’ve Also Used That Same Baby Cry SFX In My Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs Videos For Flint as a Baby.
Pushit is my favourite song on this album. The intensity and emotion of this song is visceral. They also released a live version of this song with a different interpretation, which is arguably even better...
Wow I'm glad that eulogy got you real deep into thought..it's a real deep perspective portrayed in that song. Is it Judas? Is it satan whispering into his ear offering him the world?
I thought I remember them talking about eulogy being about a guy acting out in the crowd at a concert. Others have mentioned anyone from Ron Hubbard, Cobain, to an ex manager.
Trust me it takes YEARS to understand the inner working and complexity that Tool brings, even after you hear every song watch every video hear every interview read into all the secrets of the music, you still will find yourself learning more and more because Tool is a never ending stream of knowledge that’s what makes them the greatest act music has ever seen it’s truly not just music
Remember the interview...it's abt becoming a conscious being. I've always thought he is talking abt himself and the eulogy is for the ego. He writes a lot abt letting your ego go. Some say it's L Ron Hubbard or a religious leader but that's not conscious building. He was also in the Army , he's talked abt stepping out of line before in "Jerk Off".
It's literally about desensitisation of the public to horrific scenes in the media. It's metaphorically about stinky fists. My favourite is between H., Pushit and Third Eye.
It's an interesting contrast in terms of meaning that you make :D I think Aenema, the title track, is expanding on the motif of great floods that have been highlighted in literature, such as the bible, and also significant poetry, such as Rimbaud's After the Flood, which signify a great cleansing and washing away of the immoral and the human condition. It's just comparing it to the modern day enema as a "flushing-out", which is more of reflection of modern society as a whole.
H is whatever you make it... Heaven/Hell.... Growing up I heard a bootleg of Maynard talking about H. He said you know those old cartoons where the character has to make a decision, and on one shoulder an angel pops up and on the other a devil. In life it's not really like that, it's more like friends trying to give you advice to help you make a decision, but not really knowing what's best for you. It's up to you...
Tool is about him, and me ,and you, and us, and this guy and that... Maynard sharing himself so we can feel however we choose about our own interpretation, at some point in our lives I think we will experience all perspectives- or at least enough to appreciate any or all from first-person, second-hand, third-party, fourth-chair- what have you. I personally let them take me on the journey with narration as if It were me on the ride..lol
53:30 - selling out used to mean going from underground to mainstream, hard to soft, given to the heaviness of this song, Metallica twisted the meaning in 1989 with "one" bringing the mainstream to the underground, and then claiming rightly- that yes they sold out, sold out every show from there on! We( my friends and most fans) took it as a good thing until 1999 King biscuit flower hour when they celebrated their success live with c.o.c. - I think we were all like wtf? After all this? And putting out load of shit, and reload, black album , all of which were good and yes mainstream, but not the metal and vodka that we grew up with, then they got on the wrong side of history with Napster, meanwhile Tool, c.o.c. Pantera, slayer, testament, etc., took the reigns and kept the course, Tool has us wanting more to this day.. and yes they sold out- everywhere they play...
One of my favourite albums of all time. Favourite song is Third Eye. It’s like something from another universe or a higher dimension of reality. The only Tool song that I think beats it is Reflection My top 10 Tool songs 😀 10 Schism 9 7empest 8 Pushit 7 Rosetta Stoned 6 Aenima 5 Parabol/Parabola 4 Pushit (live) 3 Lateralus 2 Third Eye 1 Reflection

My favorite tool albumn
He also talks about Arizona bay. How do you get Arizona bay? California would have to be gone. That's how. Flush it all away...
Eulogy from what I understand is about L. Ron Hubbard
Eulogy is about kult leaders, it's supposedly about Elron Hubbard (founder of Scientology), but it applies to kult leaders as a whole.
I can see that.
There's no such thing as favorite track, the whole catalog is one large opus 🤘
I'm now bookFace friends with Francesco Sonoya, who recorded the message to Hotsy Menshot (Hairy Manback).
He apologised to the band many years later.
If you like parallel world ideas ..have you seen the movie sliding doors with Gweneth Paltro... really good example of the left right turn thing
Eulogy is about L. Ron Hubbard mostly if you ask me. It could be interpreted to be about anybody standing on their soapbox and claiming victim tho

Forty Six & Two is definitely their magnum opus, it’s the most Tool song they have and first song I always recommend.

When you know.the song from your soul you do not actually need to see thelyrics...you just know them.
Easley the best thing I've seen on your channel thank you.the song eulogy lis not about christ its about ron l hubbard
Oh hell yeah T 🤘🔥🤘🔥🤘
This is the only Tool album I like, off other albums I like songs here and there but this album from top to bottom is badass!
One of my favorite Tool albums and you got to do the full album Pantera Trend kill
Third Eye - another tribute to Bill Hicks whose standup routine opens the track.
Do t listen to Google. Every song is about you.
Learn to swim is literal.he was talking about the San Andreas fault line.California will break off into the ocean.see you Arizona Bay.

My favorite song is all of them... but Jimmy if I had to pick
Are you gonna do the same for Fear inoculum?
If one of my patrons sponsors it I will. But for now, the next album I’ll be doing is opeth.
I feel like Eulogy is about... himself, you, anybody.....
This is the 3rd album I believe. Easy to forget about opiate.
