I think alphebetizing and organizing books would be my favorite part of working in a bookstore. Idk why but whenever I get bored or sad I just reorganize my shelves. I love looking through all of them. Great video! ❤

I worked in a bookstore last month too. The buyers really think we read all the books there. Sure.
And once someone said, I don't know the author or the title of the. book, but can you help me? And I was like: You're kiddig right?

Oh my God yes... I worked at Chapter for 3 years and it was crazy some of the questions I was asked. "could you please help find the book with a girl on the cover?" what?!
"I'm looking for a red book with a man and a women on the cover, and it is a romance"...
So almost every romance book ever? I know the struggle. I miss that job.

My favourite description given while working in a bookshop:
"I'm looking for a book for my grandson. It's about a train... at one point there was something blocking the tracks and everyone got worried..." Thomas The Tank Engine?? No. It turned out to be The Railway Children!

I used to own a smallish bookshop... oh, the stories. Like the woman who wanted to return a book but she hadn't bought it at my store. I knew she hadn't because it had never been in my computer system, but she was insistent that she had. Some people can't be helped...

  • @msmichellewinchester

Another thing I would add is, when you want a recommendation for someone else, find out what they read! One of the worst things is when someone comes up to me and is like: "I need a book for my grandmother, what do you recommend" and they don't know what genre she reads or what books she read lately that she enjoyed. They think that "I need a book for a 60-year-old lady" is specific enough. I don't know your grandmother, people! Also, saying that she reads "pretty much everything" is not helpful either. First of all, very few people read everything. Based on that, I could recommend The Three-Body Problem, A Game of Thrones or The Mediator series for your grandma. Oh and this car manual is really compelling. Are you positive she reads everything? I actually really want to recommend something that you or your grandmother or anothe family member or a friend will enjoy. I care to the point that if you don't give me the required information, I will make you choose at least a genre to go for, so I could tell myself that if your grandmother won't like the book, it's your fault for choosing the wrong genre. It's not like I will ever know if your grandma enjoyed the book, but I'm weird like that. I'm also paranoid that your grandma will hunt me down and yell at me for recommending a wrong book for her :). No, seriously, if you want a book for someone else, find out at least what genre they read, ideally one or two books they've read lately and enjoyed. Are you seriously telling me there's no way for you to start talking about books with them? Then maybe buy them a sweater. Oh, wait. You would have to figure out their size they wear, wouldn't you.

now I work in two-storey bookshop (? I think, ground floor and 1st floor) and thank you, dear customers, to be mad at me if I can't find there the LAST copy of random book when you often put books randomly everywhere. and no, I have no idea what book you saw 6 months ago at this table. :D

When I worked at a bookstore, my friend got a customer who held onto a book for 2 years and never read it and wanted to return it. I give her credit that she had the receipt but the return policy is 2 weeks. My friend calmly explained that to her and got yelled at. She calmly said, I'm really sorry but I'm just doing my job. It's company policy and I can't go against that. The woman threw the book at my friend's face and stormed out. She could've just sold it online if she really didn't want it. The customer isn't always right and is too self entitled if you ask me.

Good show. I can see your point. I have been buying books for over 60 years. I have dealt with many book sellers in many towns and cities. I have found that the older booksellers knew most of the books they sold. And they could recommend some good books if you mentioned the genre. The smaller the bookshop, the better the owner knew his books. Even today, in the used bookshops, the owner often knows the books we mention and he can just pick it up! In the larger shops , the paid employees are generally not knowledgeable about the books they sell. Most of them appear to be indifferent probably because they do not intend to be selling books life long. I would say people working in bookshops should love books in the first place, live books and dream books. They should specialise in some genres, and know some great books and famous characters. That Anna Anna somebody could have been Anna Karenina by Tolstoy. How could anyone in any bookstore in the US say she did not know Atticus Finch, even if she did not know Harper Lee? Some characters are more famous than the authors! ( This of course is not likely, as To Kill A Mocking Bird is required reading in high schools). There are of course too many books and too many characters nowadays, who have a short life. But the characters in the old classics still live. Who can forget a Tess or Micawber or Pip or Giles Winterborne or Mr.Gradgrind and Sissy Jupe or Michael Henchard? Such old characters do not die. When one works in a bookshop, and is given charge of fiction/classics, she should learn a few of these things. Can we think of a doctor who cannot remember his medicines? But I understand. You only worked for a year! Every occupation has its hazards, as also its hilarious side! This is a nice video.
