- In this video I’m going to talk about the time I worked at Barne and Noble as a seasonal employee . I will be going over the interview process , the training and the perks of working at Barnes and noble . It was overall a great experience so today I'm sharing my personal experience. Just keep in mind these are my own thoughts and everyone experiences things differently.

I get really stressed and nervous thinking about working at places like Starbucks or even as a Walmart cashier because I don't want to mess things up and have Karens screaming at me. I think Barnes and Noble will be amazing for people who get nervous or have anxiety about working with people etc.
You won't have people screaming at you (at least from my experience) but I hate to say as long as you work retail or food service you will always have a Karen at some point. At first it will seem scary but the more experience you get the more you will get use to it and you won't really care that much after awhile. 😂
My advice definitely don’t work at Walmart managers aren’t the best and costumers can be overwhelming
Unfortunately, when I worked at B&N, I still had plenty of customers who were nasty to me. One insisted that I was going to want children. Another got angry because the price was cheaper online (nothing cashiers can do about that, people). Another angry that I couldn't take her returns from 2 years ago. The list goes on and on. I'm sure its worse at walmart and gas stations, but, to be honest, when you work retail, the Karens are everywhere. :(

As a person with social anxiety I am very confident at working at a bookstore honestly. Isn’t too crazy and I’m sure everyone is nice.

@@Brunette_Rapunzel it’s funny, those are actually the things i feel most comfortable dealing with. but handling purchases? small conversation? literally any kind of social interaction or normal employee duties? terrifying lol.
Just got my second interview scheduled! All I did was tell them what books I was interested in and what I’m reading. Super easy stuff.

Honestly, same. I don't think too many people would be aggressive over books though, so I wouldn't worry too much about that lol
same I wanna work there bc I love books but talking to humans scares me heh
ugh yes It definitely scared me for so long but you get used to it eventually. I would say take your time counting the money. Don't rush yourself by thinking of people waiting. That's usually when I would make the most mistakes.
I worked a register at a golf place and honestly take your time when you're first starting out it's going to take some time to get used to especially with the cash if you aren't good at math but you get used to it. Even if there is a line don't rush and make a mistake take your time it's not gonna be the end of the world if you have to take a minute or few extra seconds to count the change
Hi, I worked at B&N for a long time - the cash register isn't something to be worried about, I mean it takes some use to get comfortable with but if you are willing to learn it, you will be fine. The bigger thing to know is that depending on the store they may be very very particular about things like pushing membership cards and exactly how you are interacting with customers. You may be observed via camera and get told later that you're not doing something right, etc. The comments about the membership cards here are on point - you are expected to sell membership cards and if you don't get enough sold you will get talked to which you can't always control because of the cost. You also are often asked to push other things like the book drive thing, and sometimes the B&N credit card, etc. Sometimes the list of things gets to be a bit much.
I have a in person interview this Monday and I'm scared 😭

@@yaritzacontreras-arroyo2601 I did a group interview and they just asked about our favorite books and how would pitch them our favorite book. I think the reason I stood out is because I was the only one really naming author and bonus points if you do both popular and non popular authors.

I worked at B&N in 2015, and I've recently gone back. It's gotten a lot more relaxed now.
I wanted to love it. I really did. But their pushing us to sell rewards cards was crazy. I always offered them to customers, but once they heard that it would cost them $30, it was usually a flat out no. My manager was a egotistical prick too. I got banished to working in the cafe for not selling enough rewards cards (even though none of us really did). I quit soon after. I wanted to work at B&N to sell books, not work at a cafe.
What was the application/interview process like? I’m 16 and I’m hoping to work at B&N as a first time job.

It gets a little bit better with time, you can start slowly with a part time job in a chill place. If you can, start doing things to build up your resume so you feel more confident about your skills; this can be just doing small jobs for your friends and family or even volunteering at your local library or book organization. You can do it!

i have really bad social anxiety and i don't do well in loud situations. i thought that working at b&n would be cool, but the only problem is that i only read manga. do you have to read a lot of books of different genres to get hired or?

I'm a massage therapist and I love my job, but I'm thinking of getting a second job next year to really help me save AND to help me with taxes because I currently work as an independent contractor so I pay a lot of taxes every year and I would love to work a job where I'm an employee and I can start receiving a tax refund instead of just spending tons of money every tax season.
I love books and I have a lot of experience working with people so it seems like it could be a good fit.

I had in interview for Barnes and Noble back in August but the day before I found at I got a full time library clerk job at my local library. The Barnes and Noble Bookseller job was only part time so I couldn't pass it up.
I believe in books. They are real.

I always wanted to work at Barnes and Noble, but I would have hated the register and pushing people to get memberships. I work in a grocery store, I've done register and hate it, but I'm now in our deli and LOVE it. Well... I love the people in my department because they are like family to me and I would not want to leave them .^_^
have an interview for bookseller tomorrow, so exciting! I am a little concerned about trying to sell the membership tho.

going well!! been there since May. and it turns out selling the membership wasnt that hard 🤪 thanks for asking y'all. I love this job so far. Also the bnn where I work is small enough that it never gets crazy crowded. tho we get a lot of teens just hanging around and mostly old people. Love giving recommendations for books! and sometimes I get recommended some by my own customers!

1. I dont believe it is necessary but it definitely helps.
2. They ask you about yourself, about your previous job experience, and also ask you to tell which are your favorite or most recent books you read. Mostly it is to see if you are professional and concise in your speech and manner.
3. It is neither. I work at a smaller bnn without a cafe so it's relatively less busy than bigger ones. Most of your day when you first start is being at cashier. it can be overwhelming but in two weeks youll be good at it. While there you can read some but also make sure you finish the projects you get assigned. when you are not on cashier, you will be on the floor shelving newly arrived books, making sure the place looks neat, and most importantly helping customers. The notorious metric you might get evaluated as a bookseller is the memberships you sell and monthly picks (books). Overall is a great experience to work at, and you can move up the ladder if you are clear of your goals in the company, as I am doing right now since I just graduated college. It is by far the best job I have ever had.
Can you please share a bit about filling in the online application? Especially if you don't have any prior work experience, its a little daunting to me. Im also confused as to why it asks you for your work experience, education, and skills outside of the resume attachment? Do you have the fill it out even if it's already on the resume?
I tried to unionize my store in 1999. It did not work then, but the workers now have 3-4 stores unionized stores.
Did they explain or tell you anything about the thieft policy and what happens if people steal..,
They don't call it a Starbucks because it's not a Starbucks. They have a license to sell Starbucks brand coffee but it's staffed by B&N employees and they don't take Starbucks gift cards there.

Been working here for a bit, job kinda sucks. Unless you are really into books and can tolerate the 9 dollars per hour and not really doing anything I probably wouldn't do it. Mainly doing it because it seemed chill and I have to do something to survive right now and it looks pretty good on a resume (being a bookseller). It's kind of like one of those things they can pay you less because there are people that will actively seek to work around books, just like animals and other professions. Would be better if they paid more.

What about giving the wrong change like giving too much or giving too little. At my first job you could get in trouble for handing out the wrong change but that never happened. im just wondering do you get in trouble for being sort at the regisiter or being over at the regisiter

Depends entirely on the location. Cafe probably not. Bookseller is probably more chill unless it’s holiday. Unfortunately, they only really hire for holidays and keep the best workers if I’m not mistaken
How much was the pay
I want to work at waterstones which is a bookshop in the UK but I worried about recommending people books. For example if someone asks me for a murder mystery book which I don't read. Like what am I meant to say
Oh yes I understand what you mean. At barnes and noble , there's an information table and the workers keep some newspapers with the top selling books for the week/month and I know alot of workers used that information in order to make recommendations for customers. I personally never had to do that because I was always at the register, so no one asked for my thoughts.

great question! Business casual , comfortable shoes. That's all they ever told us. So I usually wore some kind of black pants and a blouse.
How much do they pay hourly?
It depends on what job you're doing (Cashier, Barista, Manager, etc.) but according to Payscale an average of $10/h
California minimum wage is 14hr
I wish I had this video when I was really young like back in 1995, 1997 or 1998, I should have worked at Barnes and Nobles back then instead working at a shitty movie theater, I was an usher, which was basically like a janitor.
I'm currently looking for a job that's less stressful than the on I have rn, (Barista/waitress/dishwasher) so I guess I'm gonna go pick up an application for B&N tomorrow then.

Yes we did ! The first day of the training was only like 3 hours of filling paper work

@@Paulina-ie8lb nah. I have been working since I was 13 and waiting for a call as opposed to calling them yourself or coming to the actual store takes longer and makes you more likely to not get accepted for the job.

When I worked at B&N I had to endure crappy managers. Bitchy women and moody male managers. The company paid one of the lowest hourly wage in retail.
This I don’t appreciate someone else’s bad mood becoming my own like leave it at home or being treated passive aggressively over something small .

Jobs basically want you to do something, so you can’t go on your phone and hang out. They basically just want you doing something.

It depends on your locations, some stores won't really care and some stores prefer for you to have some knowledge at least for a certain genre. In my store we have some people who don't necessarily read but know what's good or not by other people that have told them. But they will ask you during the interview if you do read or if your at least familiar with what's popular.

Customers aren't snotty. They want what they pay for and also know their worth. I advise you to be more relaxed. While carrying yourself with poise and confidence. You seem very desperate.
