If this race were to happen now, there would've been 8 vsc's, 6 sc's, 4 red flags, a 50,000 dollar fine for David Coulthard (for wearing the wrong helmet), death by firing squad for Ocon, and don't forget the dutch national anthem.
@@fredyiceyYour problem is what exactly? It comes across to me that you have a problem with ensuring the safety of drivers and workers with the use of things to slow down/ bunch up the field. But maybe I’m just misunderstanding what you mean.
Though racing under a French passport, Alesi's family has Sicilian ancestry, and he feels almost as much Italian as French. It's a big part of why he followed his heart to Ferrari in 1991 instead of taking a Williams offer (that and Williams were dicking about with contracts and Ferrari did look a good prospect at the time)
I remember watching the BBC broadcast of this a few years back and noticed something really funny. If you listen really closely, during the Irvine/Salo/Häkkinen crash, you can hear the Finnish commentator screaming over Murray's own commentary XD You can even hear it in the race highlight video F1 posted on their own channel.
@digitaldeathsquid3448 I remember Untasfasfled named his driver Luca Badyouare. I never heard it as a nickname for Badoer tho. Quite fitting, he was fucking horrible
Given Murray's dispassionate call when Badoer's Minardi failed at the 99 European GP while in 4th place "Oh he's doing a Hakkinen" which I still feel was insensitive commentary given what those 3 points (as it was for the top 6 at the time) would have meant, just felt terribly cruel.
The Forti cars really were appalling and regularly failed to qualify. They were utterly and pointlessls dreadful. Relating it to recent events, Williams in 2019 were WCC level brilliance in comparison.
People usually seem to forget that Panis had to beat Coulthard in a McLaren to win this race. Sure the attrition was off the charts, but this wasn't a steal either. He stayed consistent and fast despite the conditions, got aggressive when he needed to be, and was luckier than the others who had mechanical issues. Great video Josh !
When he took the lead on lap 59, there were still nine cars running, and all except Badoer had qualified ahead of Panis. In a race where (correct me if wrong) nobody else made a single on-track overtake, he made FOUR. He was also fastest in the final Sunday practice session. I think he could genuinely have finished P3 or P4 even if nobody had retired. There was some luck involved for him to win, but an awful lot of talent too, and I think Canada '97 robbed us of seeing what he could do as much as Kubica's rally crash did for him.
Panis really got all the luck that day, didn't he? His team called for him to pit a few laps before the end for fuel, but he said something along the lines of "I can see Coulthard in my mirrors everywhere, if I run out of fuel, bad luck. But if I win, *we* win." And in parc fermé, there wasn't enough fuel to restart the car, but enough for samples by the officals. Phew.
He still made four on-track overtakes (on Herbert, Brundle, Häkkinen and, less cleanly, Irvine) in order to get in that position to capitalise. Of the seven classified finishers, Panis was lowest of all on the starting grid, so he made a fair chunk of his own luck that day too.
Incredibly, we were two hairs' breadths from having just ONE car finish. Barrichello crashed at Rascasse not because of losing grip in the rain, but because his rear suspension broke entering the corner. It had been damaged earlier in the lap, having been rear-ended into Massenet by... David Coulthard, who somehow got away without terminal damage himself. Furthermore, after Hill's engine blew it left a stream of oil down from the tunnel into the Nouvelle chicane. Alesi negotiated it safely, but when Panis arrived, he skidded on the fluid and did a 360⁰ pirouette into the chicane run-off without touching a barrier #blessed All of which means the only person not to have ANY drama the whole race (and could have been P1 out of 1 but for narrow margins) was Johnny Herbert. I'm pretty sure he also must hold a record for most positions gained for a podium finish without overtaking a single other car.
I think Ocon does come close for his victory in Hungary 2021. Bottas more or less took out himself and four others, Leclerc had to avoid the mayhem and was then taken out by Stroll, Gasly also had to avoid the mayhem, so by the first corner, Ocon had risen to 2nd from 8th on the grid. Then upon the restart came Hamilton's tyre blunder and since Vettel in 2nd with whom Ocon battled all along without ever being passed was disqualified, one could even say his victory wasn't even in contention. :P
I thought this video was going to be about the 1982 Monaco GP 😂 “Well we’ve got this extraordinary situation, we’re sat here waiting for a winner and we don’t appear to be getting one!” - James Hunt
Or we could have each driver have a lap around the track with stroll just behind them, whoever can be in the vicinity of stroll for a whole lap and not be murdered, wins.
Thank you for covering this race, one of my favourite of all time. Watching this happen at the time, glued to my tv at 12 years old, lit a fire that no Monaco race has matched!
One look at the title and I immediately thought of 1982 But then I properly read it and saw the thumbnail and realised that you were talking about 1996
An addition to the Schumi/DC helmet thing... others were offered, but Ferrari and McLaren were both sponsored by Marlboro. Hill was cruelly denied victory in Monaco by the only Renault engine failure in a Williams that season
"So after only a couple hundred yards of racing, 3 cars were already out of of the race. Soon however it would become 4."..... That sounds suspiciously familiar :D
Josh Revell curse is back. perez will lawnmow cars istead of grass, magnussen will make the stewards work overtime, sargeant will merge his car with strolls and hulkenberg will win the GP.
Nah this means it'll be a clean processional race in the eyes of many that relies more on tactics and the occasional move and is a panacea to people such as myself who believes DRS has destroyed F1 (you want that pass? EARN IT!).
"Luca Badoer in the mobile chicane"...... I remember hearing that live. My mouthfull of pepsi exploded through my nose I had such a violent laughing reflex.... Murray Walker gold. God I miss his commentary.
I remember watching this race thinking WTF is going on with so many drivers either crashing out or going out with technical problems. The three drivers vying for the title not even seeing the checkered flag and only three cars finishing was very bizarre but highly memorable. Great video though with alot of information not to mention comedy.
I’m new to following F1 so these videos are super helpful for helping me understand the history and culture of the sport. Always look forward to the new one
It annoys me when some people say he only won because of the chaos. I have to point out to them that he fought to get near the front and then used skill to keep going while others fell.
Knew exactly what this was the moment I saw the thumbnail. One of my favorite F1 races, the only victory for Panis, and a return to glory for Honda (and the first taste for Mugen).
Panis was an underrated driver. I remember him in the 1997 season before his accident, and he was consistently qualifying in the top 6 in a Prost car that was punching way above it's weight. After his accident he was never quite the same.
A very intresting video, made even more intresting by the fact that a few days before Oliver Panis's only win was also mentioned by Daddy RPM. You two are my favorite F1 Artists/Journalists
It was one of the first races I watched as a 10 year old. Remember it vividly. You didn't mention that Frentzen breaking his nose, as he had to put, meant it gave him the reason to change to dry tires. Which changed the course of the race even though he was (almost) a lap down.
I remember the Peter Windsor video on f1’s channel around 10 years ago of this - watching Panis controlling the car with sparks coming from the under tray is something else!
I heard that Mugen Honda in 1996 in Canada. On the straight, it sounded far more ferocious than the 412 T2 of the year prior. It was a beast. It was the only car I had to put earplugs in for. It felt like 100 needles jabbing in your ears. It effing hurt man.
Odd race for sure. Frentzen lost a good opportunity to secure a great result had that incident with Irvine not happened. But Olivier Panis was the fastest on the Warm Up session, proving that the car wasn't slow at all. Not even Coulthard, Hakkinen, Brundle, Herbert, Irvine and Villeneuve could match his race lap times.
@@retrobeans24 yes, Brundle was a very good driver. He would have achieved more if not for suffering a career changing crash in his debut year for Tyrrell in 1984 where he broke both feet. This accident meant he spent his entire racing career unable to do left foot braking. Without that accident he may have fought for world championships. He and Senna had a legendary F2 title duel in 1983 which Senna won in the final round

Yea, I'm not bothering with this race weekend. I was reluctantly tuning in, but BBC have changed their radio player on the website, so can't sync with TV footage and that tipped the balance. I've always found Monaco incredibly boring, but habit's meant I've endured, but not this weekend. 🤞 I can use this to completely stop with F1 as I'm pretty tired of the whole thing at this point, but 30 years is a lot of habit to break.

Problem with monaco is that for any overtaking to happen, you need a significantly faster driver to be behind a significantly slower driver. Now logically speaking if the guy is much faster, there isnt really any good reason why he wouldnt have qualified before the others. So you basically need a fast guy to e.g. have front wing damage, a puncture or something else, then he needs to make it to the pits, catch up and start overtaking. There is no way you have actual back and forth battles between faster guys. Other tracks are amazing because you get those switchbacks or you can go side by side through 3 corners and then with a smart move that lets you end up on the inside line in the 4th corner to finish the overtake. Monaco got nothing like that. The only realy overtaking opportunity is by basically sliding in your nose after the tunnel. That usually end up in some contact, then the driver you overtook cant make the corner and goes on straight, making the chasing driver superbly angry and putting the guy in the front in an awkward position, where he doesnt really know if he should or shouldnt give the position over. But thats all over with todays cars of course. Even a faster driver aint getting a nose in there.
Here's an interesting thing: it was the first of two races where the Minardis comit fratricide among them. If they didn't do that, they could have scored some points! Because on the next race, in Barcelona, Lamy and Fisichella will do the same thing! Looks like they didn't learn the lesson.
It's not really that dramatic, cranes in monaco are a standard... No need to stop the race if there are no marshals, cars or barrier damage on the track
If this race were to happen now, there would've been 8 vsc's, 6 sc's, 4 red flags, a 50,000 dollar fine for David Coulthard (for wearing the wrong helmet), death by firing squad for Ocon, and don't forget the dutch national anthem.

That usually end up in some contact, then the driver you overtook cant make the corner and goes on straight, making the chasing driver superbly angry and putting the guy in the front in an awkward position, where he doesnt really know if he should or shouldnt give the position over.
But thats all over with todays cars of course. Even a faster driver aint getting a nose in there.
watched it live, unbelievable race - the odds on Panis winning wouldve been eyewatering
Irvine got his revenge on Panis the next year, by holding him up savagely while a lap down in the Spanish GP, likely costing Panis the win.
Here's an interesting thing: it was the first of two races where the Minardis comit fratricide among them. If they didn't do that, they could have scored some points! Because on the next race, in Barcelona, Lamy and Fisichella will do the same thing! Looks like they didn't learn the lesson.
Isnt this basically every f1 race? You get the pole youre basically guaranteed the win
Fun fact, that Jean Alesi was french with italian roots.
9:55 - 10:00 was not expecting that whatsoever
Not bad for my first F1 race. Don’t worry next race just a few more cars finished, six lol
'Some four hours later'
Dude that was savage
Imagine if commentators were still allowed to be as savage as Murray and James could be.
If Badoer had kept his head then Forti could have scored points, which would have been crazy.
We are now overdue a wacky race. Let it be this weekend!
WAKE UP JOSH POSTED!🎉
At 10:03, did they really tow a car from a live race track? Safety guidelines really were optional in those days, weren't they..
It's not really that dramatic, cranes in monaco are a standard... No need to stop the race if there are no marshals, cars or barrier damage on the track
Please make a video about Zsolt Baumgartner🙏
Another Josh Revell triumph!

The Monaco Destruction Derby has such a better ring to it. Here's hoping for a repeat
Who's the guy in the red firesuit sitting between the Minardi Driver's in that photo?
