They wore their passion on their sleeves. Not in it for the glory or the money, they were pure racers. It's why when it was a Toro Rosso, built in the same factory with the same staff, which got that awesome win with a fresh-faced rookie called Seb (I wonder what happened to him? ;)), much of the celebration was for Minardi!
I shouted at the tv lap after lap for Mark to get that 5th. What a great day for Minardi, esp as the diff was failing. Thanks go to Mika Salo for spinning!
2002 was also a notable year in Aussie sport because Steven Bradbury won our first ever gold at a Winter Olympics by merely finishing without crashing. I'm sensing a theme here. :)
Wow! What a phenomenal race. It's amazing how closely the plotline of this mirrors what just happened at the 2023 Aus GP- especially an Aussie scoring points in their first home race in one of the worst cars on the grid. Incredible!

I remember watching that , simply for the Fact that the Crash was shown over and over and over again. Not gonna lie, being 10 at the time I was shocked till the end of the Race. It was the first real memorable Crash I witnessed myself live on TV
Damn, I get a bit of a lump in my throat at that ending. I still remember the dread and tension as Salo closed in the final few laps and then Webber was forced to defend with his life. That Salo spin was almost something conjured up by the hundreds of thousands of Aussies who saw it and was the release valve of the stress and nailbiting that was building to extreme levels. This was my favourite race of all time. Schumi was my childhood hero, Minardi was the tiny battler that everyone loved, Australia is my home and seeing an Aussie on debut bring his Minardi (owned by another Aussie at the time) home in 5th in front of a crowd was truly something special. Rightly one of the most iconic moments in Australian motorsport history!
Fun Fact: according to Trulli his main problem was being very gentle on his tires, at a time when one needed to be more aggressive on them, and never really managing to adapt. Also, he's been producing award winning wine since retiring.
Trulli in my eyes will always be the "wildcard" driver. He had some uncanny ability to always get everything right during qualifying however once the race came he will always come down

Aaah the good old days of F1 when the cars actually sounded like racing machines. That's what drew me to the sport in the first place, the insane sound of the V10/V8's screaming down the track... that and Murray Walker's over-the-top enthusiasm of course (he flubbed more often than Pastor Maldonado crashed into other cars, but he was fun to listen to)
I always knew he scored on his debut in the minardi, but to now know the scope of the race which caused this is mind blowing. I had no idea before Webber had car issues as well!
I was there with my dad as a kid of 11 years old, first GP I ever attended, the cars were so loud back then (so damn good) as was the F-111 that was doing afterburner displays pre race (literally made the ground shake). Jarno Trulli’s crash was right in front of us. Schumacher winning and Webber getting points (though I didn’t really know how significant it was at the time but still I was happy to see him and everyone excited about it). This race is totally etched in my mind as one of the best memories of my childhood and looking back what an epic Aus GP, had it all.

I had to stay awake until very late to see this race but still love how Stoddart/Webber duo (both australians) were able to celebrate in front of the locals. Just keep in mid Minardi was bought a few weeks prior to the start of the season, they were a very small team and Webber only had a contract for the 3 first races of the season.
Wonderful tale. I remember I was 13 years old and I woke up in Italy to watch it. Minardi didn't have the same support as Ferrari, but some people held it closer to the heart. It was wonderful, I miss the F1 from the late 90s-early 2000s, anything was possible - despite Ferrari dominating. I think the F1 Podcast "Beyond the Grid" with Paul Stoddart retelling the whole experience is a good B-side for this video. Thanks!
I think the 2008 Australian GP comes close as one of the most underrated crazy races of all time. Only 7 cars finished (one was disqualified later), Bourdais almost finished 4th in his debut in a Torro Rosso, the Safety Car came in 4 times, Ferrari had a double DNF with a lot of crashes and spins, and Nico Rosberg got his first podium.
I was looking to see if someone else had mentioned the 1995 race, that was also super crazy. Equal biggest winning margin (1969 Spanish Grand Prix being the other) of 2 laps for Damon Hill, Panis in a smoking Ligier-Mugen in 2nd and Morbidelli in a Footwork-Hart in 3rd, all highly unlikely. Of course the 2002 edition had the added bonus of an Australian driving for an Australian owned team, so totally understandable why they've gone with this one here!

This was on my birthday senior year of high school. I'd just arrived at a house party after playing with a band and demanded this be put on the TV (oz gp in the US was midnight sat). Weber/Minardi points, toyota points on debut, jag on the podium, lap 1 fracas- it had it all

Just a heads up, but the traction control on the 2000s car was a necessity because without TC, the cars were practically undrivable. Multiple pilots in testing attempted to drive the cars with electronic TC turned completely off and couldn't make it past the first few turns in numerous attempts. They were wiley, untamable cars. Cars that even with TC, would suffer from wheelspin in quite a few GPs.
I loved JPM. He never got a fair shake in the sport. He was always a thrill to watch. I watched him take pole in Canada. I was sitting at turn 1. The crowd went nuts.
I'd love to see a WTF happened to Jarno Trulli video tbh. He was one of my favourites in the 00s, but such a frustrating character to support. He was probably one of the best qualifiers of all time but struggled in races. However his performances in Austria 1997 and Monaco 2004 for example were excellent.
It’s an interesting one, because he managed to last 15 consecutive years in F1 driving for 5 different teams, and achieving podiums in 7 different seasons
I started watched in the mid 90s when I was a kid with my Dad. I always remember things being a battle for second most of the time and we were big Coulthard and McLaren so it made things more interesting with the GOAT Schumey walking all over everyone in dominant fashion.
this race's thumbnail on google searches and youtube highlights is that opening shunt of Ralf flying and debris coming off Rubens's car and tire smoke behind as well....if that doesn't highlight the madness that comes with this sport, I don't know what does. Yea 2002 was Ferrari-dominated, but we still saw many more teams get P3 or at least points (despite only the top 6 getting them). That's why we reminisce on the good old days despite the dominance.

I couldn't watch the race live as I was a kid who would fall asleep so my Mum as she always did taped races that was late or early & I watched this race & the start like a 1000 times. Watching the 2002 australian grand prix was madness. Also the fact that Ferrari ran the 2001 car for the First few races is just incredible. Shows just how strong they really were. Also MAN the V10s. Oh how amazing they sounded.
I was at this race. Had a seat around turn 11/12(?) so I missed what happened at the start of the race. The stand was facing down the track, so we couldn't see what was coming, but you could hear the cars approaching. I remember hearing one car coming in, and then the sound completely changed. Everyone looked to the right and watched and Villeneuve came screaming through the corner, minus his rear wing, straight into the wall. Ouch! Late in the race we could see the battle between Salo and Webber, then we heard a cheer behind us and saw Webber come through, but no Salo! Good memories!
Watching it lLIVE at the time, i was screaming my lungs out for Webber in the Minardi...... a rare sight for that minnow to get points after such a long time
I was there!! It was fuckin amazing. Michael was competing for his 5th WDC and on the driver parade I held up 5 fingers and pointed at Michael. He looked at me, saw my 5 fingers and nodded and gave me thumbs up. I still get chills thinking about it now. I remember Mika Salo spun his Toyota right in front of us when he was chasing down Mark Webber and was likely going to pass him. It was amazing. Everyone cheered and screamed and clapped, it was like Mark was winning
I watched this race on Globo, I couldn't believe that crash, and I couldn't believe that Webber scored points in a Minardi, on his debut, and on his home race.

I was at this race. Had a seat around turn 11/12(?) so I missed what happened at the start of the race. The stand was facing down the track, so we couldn't see what was coming, but you could hear the cars approaching. I remember hearing one car coming in, and then the sound completely changed. Everyone looked to the right and watched and Villeneuve came screaming through the corner, minus his rear wing, straight into the wall. Ouch! Late in the race we could see the battle between Salo and Webber, then we heard a cheer behind us and saw Webber come through, but no Salo! Good memories!
Watching it lLIVE at the time, i was screaming my lungs out for Webber in the Minardi...... a rare sight for that minnow to get points after such a long time

I was there!! It was fuckin amazing. Michael was competing for his 5th WDC and on the driver parade I held up 5 fingers and pointed at Michael. He looked at me, saw my 5 fingers and nodded and gave me thumbs up. I still get chills thinking about it now. I remember Mika Salo spun his Toyota right in front of us when he was chasing down Mark Webber and was likely going to pass him. It was amazing. Everyone cheered and screamed and clapped, it was like Mark was winning

I watched this race on Globo, I couldn't believe that crash, and I couldn't believe that Webber scored points in a Minardi, on his debut, and on his home race.
This race leaves so much to unpack
