    00:00 Start with the original photo
    00:29 Duplicate the background layer
    00:53 Why I don't use the Replace Color tool
    01:23 Use the Polygonal Lasso tool
    02:01 Make the selection
    02:27 Use the Space bar to move the view
    02:50 You can refine the Layer Mask later
    03:27 Select around the reflection
    04:13 Finish the selection
    04:58 The selection is the main part of the job
    05:47 Make the selection into a Layer Mask
    06:18 Add a Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer
    06:33 Move Hue to change the color
    07:10 Clean up the Layer Mask

      Thank you so much! This is my preferred technique for changing colors. The other technique I use sometimes is to convert the object to black and white then add color with a color layer.

    Excellent video! Great and very useful information, delivered in a very pedagogic manner. We have all become great image editors now, much of it thanks to George. I bought his PSE2021 training earlier this year for a very cheap price compared to the value of the contents. I hightly recommend it (and no, I have absolutely NO connection, I have no dog in the race - other than being a happy client).

    Very good information. What do you do if you make a mistake with the polygonal selection tool? How do you backtrack to the last selection click where everything was going ok?

    • @HTGGeorge
      @HTGGeorge  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sometimes if you use the ctrl+z keyboard shortcut it will step back one click, but that doesn't always work. The best thing is to just finish the selection then go back and either add to or remove from the selection using those options with the same tool.

    Hi George. Thanks for your videos. How would you change her sweater color to black? Where would you find it on the hue setting? I have a photo I am working on and when I used an AI to colorize it (it was a black and white photo) the program did not color the lady's dress black but gave it mixed hues. I am trying to make her dress black as it was originally. How do I do this in photoshop elements 2022?

    • @HTGGeorge
      @HTGGeorge  ปีที่แล้ว

      Use Hue/Saturation and remove all the saturation. Now it is gray scale. Next use Levels to lower the values to black, or better still slightly lighter than black so that you keep some detail.

    Fantastic video! I wish, however, that you would have included the option of selecting a color for the sweater that appears elsewhere in the photo. The method you use limits the new color selection to only what can be "eye-balled" from the hue slider. A person might want to select a specific color that shows up elsewhere in the photo. Is there an easy way to do that?

    • @HTGGeorge
      @HTGGeorge  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure, you can do that but it requires a different technique. Here it is in a nutshell, make a selection and layer mask on a new layer as in this video. Then convert that layer to black and white, using the option that gives the lightest value. Then select your color from the photo using the eyedropper tool. Make a new layer above the layer mask layer and fill that with your selected color using the paint bucket. Make that layer a clipping mask layer onto the layer mask layer. Then change the blend mode to lighten. That should do it. Some colors may need these steps tweaked.

    When you use the space bar to move your image my right hand is on the mouse. Do I let go the mouse to use my right hand for the space to move image? How do you do it to not lose your place with the polygonal tool?

    • @HTGGeorge
      @HTGGeorge  ปีที่แล้ว

      I use my left hand on the keyboard and my right hand on the mouse.

    Question... how can I change object color to white? I do not see that as an option! Can you help?

    • @HTGGeorge
      @HTGGeorge  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure, first convert the object to Black and White by removing all saturation with the Hue/Saturation adjustment. Then use the Levels adjustment to get the look you want. It should have some grays in it so that you can see the contours.

    • @nicolehershman
      @nicolehershman ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HTGGeorge ThNk you soooo much for the quick response!! So even if my image is in color, I switch to BW?

    • @HTGGeorge
      @HTGGeorge  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nicolehershman Only switch the layer that your object is on to black and white. Leave the rest in color. Basically you need to remove the color from your object in order to make it look white (no color).

    • @nicolehershman
      @nicolehershman ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HTGGeorge youre the best! Not sure if I can figure this out but I'm gonna try! So much easier to change it to a solid color. I don't know why they don't have white on the hue options. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    • @HTGGeorge
      @HTGGeorge  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nicolehershman They don't have white on the hue options because white isn't a color. In RGB, which is the color format Photoshop Elements uses, white is mixing of all colors together, black is no color at all. If you look at the numeric values for colors in RGB you have 3 colors, Red Green and Blue, no blue has a blue value of 0 and all blue has a blue value of 256. The same is true for Red and Green. In RGB you have 3 numbers for colors a number for Red, one for Green, and one for Blue. Like this: Black is no color for all three so the value is 0 0 0, White is full color for all three so white is 256 256 256. I know that was highly technical, but there you go, white isn't on the Hue scale because it isn't a color, it is all colors.

    What if, in the middle of an important or interesting class, a clown enters and starts pitching a service or product you don't need? Yeah, that's what the TH-cam ad experience is like.

    • @HTGGeorge
      @HTGGeorge  ปีที่แล้ว

      Except that the clowns pay for my channel. If everyone paid me just 1 cent when they watch one of my videos I could get rid of all the clowns. I spend hours a day on these videos, if I don't earn something for those hours I won't be able to make the videos. After all, I'm not independently wealthy, and no rich uncle. You should be thankful for the clowns, that is why TH-cam exists. The clowns pay for it.

      Perhaps it would be less disruptive if the clowns showed up at the beginning and/or end, instead of interrupting your helpful and informative lessons.
      When the ad experience gets intolerable, viewers may skip a video altogether. I've done that. There's lots of competing content out there.

    • @HTGGeorge
      @HTGGeorge  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TypeORedPill IF my viewers supported my channel I wouldn't need any advertisers. But my viewers don't support my channel, so I need the ads. Simple as that. Mid-roll ads bring in more money then ads at the start or finish. Without those ads I would be forced to close down the channel and get a real job. The ONLY reason i have a channel on TH-cam is because the advertisers pay for my time. I'm not getting rich doing this, just barely scraping by, but the advertisers let me continiue doing what I love. I wish that my viewers supported my efforts on TH-cam, but they just don't.
