You have definitely acted 100% correctly in my view, it’s precisely what I would have done and the look on your face when realising what had to follow would have been my reaction too. There’s far more at stake than a few nicker, you can soon get over that and forget all about it but knowing you’ve done right and getting to sleep of a night soundly is of far more importance. Thanks for sharing because it’s a reminder to remain scrupulous in the face of these conundrums that we are constantly faced with. 🙏👍🏻

Hi John, thanks for your comments and supporting me in that decision, I do feel really bad for the guy though so I am going back next week to sort it all out, I think it’s terrible that people carry this sort of work out and can sleep at night.

Usually when you see ‘this is the worst I’ve ever seen’ it’s often not THAT bad, but this, this is on another level!! How can anyone leave that mess as if that’s acceptable? You should name and shame whoever did this!! 😡

When we had a bungalow refurbished and adapted for my disabled brother, it too was re-wired. However, those who did the rewire left all the old cabling in the loft space, which looked just like that tangle. I had to go up there and work out what was new, and what was old, what was live and what was not. It was a complete rats nest. I suspect that something similar happened here and old wiring has been left.

Unfortunatly there are some really dodggy people around in the building trade... this reminds me when staying over at a friends place I wanted to use an external 3 pin socket to plug my electric car overnight... since their house is not too recent I tried to see where in the consumer unit that socket was connected to so I could check the amp rating. That plug had been added later on and given its location I suspected the person who had done the job to have connected to a light circuit... well I was wrong about that... but it was worse than I though: that plug wasn't connected to any power breaker at all in the unit! I tried every one of them and the only way I could cut the electricity on that socket was to cut the general supply of the whole house!!!! And this was in france where plugs don't have fuses... so I would have been able to charge my car at any amp value all the way to burning the house down! I asked my friend if he had wired the plug himself and he assured me he had hired an "electrician" to do the job!

Bit like the one I had, the guy had purchased a 9kw shower and called me to fit it? When I got there he started telling me how to do the job, this consisted of he wanted it spurred off the back of a single socket on the landing with some old 2.5mm twin and e cable and no isolator switch, the house was still on a old Wylex fuse box and he was adamant that was the correct way to fit the shower, when he was not looking I got in my van and he never saw me again😂

Do You use BG consumer units? All electricians hate them for some reason? I need 2 because I have so many ways. 2 x ev, solar, hvac 2x heat pumps, 8 socket rings etc etc. The consumer units will be mounted above the door so when you come in the wind makes the lids clank like a letter box. BG are the only ones I have found that sell a lockable lid. RCBO its called a BG Fortress I believe. The lockable lids are an after purchase and cost £20 i think. Any suggestions? I saw a Schneider 36 way in 3 rows. very narrow so it would just fit next to the door with mm to spare. the thing is then you walk in and there is a consumer unit at head height rite there and the lids will still jank from the wind of the door and Schneider have no lockable lid option. 2 above the door just seems a better idea to me. I l already ran the tails for a second one now.

    • @sotaelectrical
      @sotaelectrical  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Il be honest I only use the bg boards for outside EV installs, otherwise I use a brand called FUSEBOX when I’m doing any other consumer unit works, a quick tip that might help.. stick some foam strip around the lids so when the wind catches them they won’t clang anymore.

  • @jsouto77

Firstly top man for being honest with the clients, that exactly how a good customer base is built.
Secondly i would report the previous spark, to their scheme.
Ive walked off a few jobs in my time, I once went to a fresh rewire for circuits tripping back in 2019 (literally signed off 3 weeks prior)and the guys had installed a full mcb board with no rcds just a main switch, no bonding, cables lashed about in the loft, exposed live terminals everywhere and i cant be certain but it looked like they had used second hand plates everywhere as some of them had paint on them. 8kw shower wired in 2.5mm and on a 40 amp breaker.....ive never been so scared for a customer in my life.
But sometimes giving your expert brutality honest opinion is just what they want and makes them appreciate you more.

in life av always itemised a full job (specification even down to the fixings,) in with the estimate for the job and the customer has always gave me a ring and said thanks for your quote but I have been quoted a cheaper price for the job , I have always said ok and asked so is his spec a cheaper spec , and they reply there is no spec he just said a price for the job, that answers your question no guarantees no warrantees because there's no spec so you have no argument when things go wrong, am pleased am retired oap for quite a few years now and not competing against unskilled am not a electrician but when it came to guarantees I could show people jobs from 30 /40 yr plus which are still holding there ground, am a time served roofer, you must be thorough when carrying out a survey get it wrong and they cut corners, like he said dont know what to do, just walk away or renew, and be careful of the jobs were the customers says he left the job unfinished, dont take the customers word for it, theres 3 answers to the story, the contractors the client and the truth, he seems a canny bloke makes a good job yu only as good as your last job.

There's crap installers and then there are life threatening installations - neither are good for the business, but one should be a criminal offence.
Isn't it (or if not it should be) a requirement that installations of such poor quality be reported to either NICEIC or NAPIT (whichever body the previous installer was registered with). I know NAPIT offer "Efficacy Insurance" but I think this is optional and should instead be mandatory as part of the trade body membership fee. As the consumer I would be reporting that installer immediately and claiming against the insurance (if it exists). Sadly I know from personal experience NAPIT are about as much use as a chocolate toothbrush when it comes to consumers, I "think" NICEIC are better.....

I have in my possession all photographs of the absolute shite this NAPIT guy has installed post my inspection, along with the local authority compliance cert.
It is so bad that the house needs a full new rewire 1 year later.
I have advised my client that he should contact NAPIT direct to instruct their member to re do the work to avoid removal from their scheme, but you know what, there is no interest from either party.
Its seems that they'll happily continue to take membership fees from this outfit, so they can just crack on with the shit standard of work.
