Dean and Ayesha Sherzai are a husband-wife team of doctors, researchers, and scientists. Dean has his MD, PhD, MPH, and MAS, and Ayesha has her MD and MAS. The letters are nice, but really serve more as a reminder of their insatiable desire to do more and learn more so that we can better serve people. Together, they wrote The Alzheimer’s Solution, which was released in 2017. Ayesha is working on her PhD in women’s leadership and recently completed an extensive culinary training program. So the delicious recipes we share with you are all her! Dean is definitely a professional taste-tester at this point. They co-founded the Healthy Minds Initiative with the intention of bringing brain health into communities. It is now the largest community-based brain initiative in the country. They developed The NEURO Plan, a brain health course aimed to minimize the risk of Alzheimer’s and Dementia. And they are parents to two incredible kids, Sophie and Alex.

Relistening today. My father died with dementia. I care for my dependent mother who has dementia. Today my sister, a year younger than me, has been diagnosed with early onset dementia. Time to crack down on my lifestyle and tighten up my diet.

My mother, 2 aunts and my sister all died of alzheimers so anything I can learn about the disease is helpful. I am 73 and have been plant based for 13 years because I figured what is good for the heart is good for the brain.

I really can't thank you enough, Chef AJ, for interviewing so many very knowledgeable and interesting people and educating people like me. I really loved this interview and I agree that both doctors never seem to age, just like you. It must be the plant based lifestyle. I wish more health professionals would educate themselves on the relationship between nutrition and preventive treatment. Once again, thank you and keep well.

The amount of stress a Nun has is none.
Let's add in how well neurologically oriented Chiropractic care is the good kind of stress and appropriate stimulation of the brain. I always tell my patients that their poor posture is really a direct external way of measuring their brain health. I truly believe in move it or lose it. I have been plant-based since 1987 and vegan since 1989. I survived a near-fatal TBI in 2209. Chiropractic neurology helped me to rewire my brain. Going to Chiropractic school at age 43 cognitively challenged me and helped me regrow my brain and re-establish connections that were not optimal. I use a five pillar approach that is identical to your NEURO approach. Thank you both so much and you too Chef AJ for keeping this discussion going. If any of you ever get to San Diego, please look me up. I use mild hyperbaric oxygen and LED light therapy combined with PEMF technology to help patient heal faster. I teach a modified version of DR. McDougall's digestive tune up elimination protocol to challenge my patients to transition to a plant based lifestyle.

I’ve heard these doctors speak when their book came out in 2017. This was about the time my sister and I noticed my mom’s mental decline. She is now on Hospice w/stage III cancer ... she and my stepdad would not allow us to help or be involved in her care in any way until she was admitted to the hospital this summer for a necrotic wound. The doctors were concerned and reached out. I had contacted several of them with concerns that dementia was not recognized and her health was compromised ... HIPPA prevented the doctors and us from assisting. We are now helping with care. It’s a horrendous disease. My mom was mostly plant-based until she married her husband. When she retired at 77 most of her daily interaction with people dropped off. She also became more sedentary - no regular exercise. Thank you AJ so much for interviewing the doctors. I look forward to hearing them again in March.

I love the message you are giving here. So much hope for a better for the future. If only more people could see it. I feel like I a m the only plant based person because my wife and 3 of my kids don't believe it or because of my wife not listening to it . My 1 youngest daughter wants to go plant based. i have gotten a friend at work to switch and he lost 30 lbs and got off all his daily medicine except insulin which he reduced to 30 percent of his previous use. He is still eating Meat dairy and eggs but trying to stop. He has the proof now. He said his whole family sees it.

Thank you for asking about ADHD. I was so judgmental about that issue until my son and I were diagnosed (me VERY late in life) after 8 weeks of thorough testing. I see how my WFPB diet and regular exercise help me control the symptoms in such a profound way.

So true. Changing a life time of habits overnight is not easy for many. Small steps and replace one food or habit at a time. Feel good about it then add a new habit. If it feels to hard or to drastic some people won't do it. As far as stress, sadly some of us can't afford to change that. Especially if is job related. Did I understand the answer about fats from nuts and seed that is ok? Because I heard olive oil in small is ok. Enjoying this interview. I'm still watching but I am going to forward to others 🙂

Thank you for this interview. In 2015 my first-ever brain MRI revealed nearly 300 lesions.
I was DXd w/‘Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis.’ A few years later I was given a Neuro-Psych Eval, and found to have short-term memory loss. Fortunately, no signs of Alzheimer’s Disease - my paternal grandmother had AD for the last 10-12 years of her life, she passed at 99yo.
I’d like to ask the Sherazis how accurate do they feel a Neuro-Psych Eval is?

The one thing I disagree with what you say is that if we ate right we would not need supplements. As we age, and I am 80 yrs. old, it is a proven scientific fact, that our bodies cannot produce certain elements, such as Coq10 as much as we produced it when we were younger. Also, Do some research o PQQ, or on black cumin seed oil. Or on resistant starch, etc. Because my 80 year old body cannot absorb nor produce what is needed, I will continue to supplement. Otherwise, you almost got it right, and I will order and read your book. By the way, I’m a vegan, but I have to work on my sleep and exercise.

What about Dr Dale Bredesens diet plan which he calls ketoflex, the main idea is to go into ketosis or ketogenic state, i.e. to deplete glucose reserves and start using fat as fuel and so the brain uses ketones, in the interview they mention him but dont mention his name, that dementia cannot be reversed, there seemed to have been patients with MCI that have reversed this state with his protocol, the problem I fear is that many docs, whether vegan or keto or whatever they are they have vested interested and have invested their careers, lives, money and I fear they will not backdown even if there is a study or another doc who happened to reverse the disease, these two docs are nice but they are human beings, what if Dr Bredesen is right? By the way this Dr Bredesen says you can be vegan if you want, its just that you should move the brain to autophagy via intermittent fasting, doing exercise of course. By having a more keto diet your brain uses ketones and is beneficial for the brain, I think.
The Med diet or MIND diet seems to do well but yet again they say that well its the plants that are responsible, not the olive oil or fish, this reveals a vegan BIAS, whether that be a benevolent one, i.e. they just want to help people and believe this is the best way or just stuck in their ways I just dont know, a combination of both probably.
Why is Dr Bredesen having good results with his Ketoflex diet which is basically a Ketogenic diet and can be vegan or very low animal or fish diet but high in fats, arent good fats good for brain health? Olive oil or any oil is a processed food and not a whole food, neither is wine, vinegar, preserved foods, salt and sugar of course, it seems that any deviation from whole food is a sin or a no no, nuts for example are not as good as we think, they trigger Herpes outbreaks which in turn creates inflammation and affects dementia (the more outbreaks you have) nuts harbor moulds, you roast them and you increase AGE's or glycation which ages you and affect your brain, lectins, oxalates, phytates, gluten etc that you encounter more and more as you go more whole food plant based seems to affect brain health and dementia apparently, having a leaky gut and ingesting gluten is not good even though the vegan docs will immediately shun this reality and say well only7% of the population have celiac, well so many people that I know or have come across have gluten and dairy insensitivity which shows leaky gut problems, and so my point is that we have so many plants to choose from, when I look closer many of these plants may be and ARE problematic, as soon as I purchase fruits and veg I stuff them into the fridge and I believe that as soon as these veg/fruit are picked they are going off/becoming bad and creating mold, if I dont eat a melon, pears, celeriac etc I see tiny bits of mold, if I dont eat them within lets say 5 to 7 days, mold from our environment damages the brain and I assume daily ingestion of fruits/veg/nuts that harbour mold are also harming my brain.
The points about there being way more studies suggesting vegan type diets being healthy is correct but thats because keto type diets have only become popular recently and come to our attention only recently and therefore positive studies are less.
All the docs or \gurus have their bias and therfore will show studies to confirm these biases, the keto or paleo guys do the same, as an ordinary man I jsut want to know the truth, I don't care about vegan or carnivore or paleo, my interest is my health.
In a speech I saw today Dr Dean was asked about Dr Bredesen and he did not mention anything about the plan, about ketosis and just mentioned that he sells supplements, he just quickly scoffed at the idea that this fellow NEURO doc had another plan or protcol, this was sad as I liked \Dr Dean but as soon as I saw that, I felt deflated and though okay another vegan Nazi that siply will not budge from his position, nomatter what and this is the dilemma the nomatter what part, what if Dr Bredesen is right?

Brand new and fully formed Genesis1:11 Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. 12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, 29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground-everything that has the breath of life in it-I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.
31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.
