The pacing in this movie is criminal, some scenes and transitions felt just like video game cutscenes. But omg the theater experience of seeing this movie with kids cheering during Mario and Bowsers fight and hearing all the iconic sound effects just really hit my nostalgia bias bone just right. It was definitely a Mario movie

Puss and Boots the last wish is a sequel to an 11 year old spin-off movie, that barely anyone remembered. Cobra kai is a sequel series to a franchise that declined after it's first movie. Actually expecting a worthwhile story, from the franchise that brought us the video game movie curse should be the norm not the exception. If parallel universes were a thing, we would definitely have some universes where that first mario movie was great and Superman the movie sucked.

New Donk was fun but I think the frantic 2D sidescrolling of it lent itself well to the sequence.
EDIT: Everyone saying Wrecking Crew and the original SMB is 100% right by the way, I just mean more like I wish they retread those old grounds in a new game. All these Goombas and Koopas and we don't even have those funny crab enemies from the first game (whose...name escapes me atm)??

i was thinking that nintendo could take a LOT of things from this film as gimmicks for their next generation of games. Think the villain karts during the rainbow road scene or the jet ski segments for mario kart 9.
A next-gen 2d mario game that takes inspiration from those floating platform scenes with twists and turns while still being side-scrolling, or that uses that highly detailed Brooklyn aesthetic for a certain world, would be really cool. Totally agree. I had a good time in the theater, but once I left I asked myself "what was the thematic arc?" I came up blank. There's no real story there, nothing character arc/growth based--which honestly is odd for Illumination who, even with the DM/Minions movies are annoying AF, still have strongly identifiable thematic arcs. So this one lacking that is fine just... kind of odd? But I'm hopeful with the tease of Peach's backstory that a sequel would give us a full arc for her as that's the most natural "next story" from what I can tell?

It has a basic character arc for Mario and that's good enough as long as the rest of the movie is enjoyable. This movie wasn't pretending to be anything it's not. It was a fun ride that Mario fans will love. Nobody was expecting this movie to be on the level of Puss in Boots the Last Wish.

Generally agree with this take. I just wanna add: I don't really get the argument against having Mario's voice be his usual one. "It'd be annoying to hear for 90 minutes", "emotional scenes wouldn't work"... A Goofy Movie is right there! I *know* a character can have a funny voice or accent and be executed so well that some scenes make me cry if the acting and story are good!
Also, if his usual voice is really that distracting for some people, I personally would love to have Mario be a silent/almost silent protagonist that we can understand through his actions, character acting and facial expressions. In this one, it works somewhat because Peach isn’t a native of the Mushroom Kingdom, rather being an implant raised by Toads. It works since this journey requires the Mario Brothers saving themselves and seeking resolve, rather than Peach’s rescue. It just falls a bit flat since the IP of Mario has a formula.

The stereotypes/tropes they presumably fight against were arguably more flattering then what they've done to women. They make women look desperate for recognition. It's pathetic to look at. The heroes they create are never heroes at all, but rather shallow cardboard cutouts. They aren't allowed to even *be* characters because the writers can't accept that flaws and struggles are what make something engaging. Even when they put forth a feeble attempt at a hero's journey, the heroine's flaws are always something ridiculous like being 'too perfect' and her so-called struggle is dealing with people who don't understand how great she is. What a joke. Characters like these are all human shaped jokes. It was kind of funny at first but the longer this mentality of 'correcting societies wrongs' goes on their efforts just become sadder and sadder.
In this simple story, Mario undergoes a genuine hero's journey. He is forced to cope with failure. His opponents are stronger and more experienced than he is, so his chances of victory are left in doubt. He *cannot* win on his own, but his bravery puts him in the right places at the right times. He needs a great deal of help from newfound friends and allies. His saving grace is that he never gives up, learns quickly, and has something worth fighting for. It doesn't hurt that his antagonists (DK and Bowser) are hampered by their foolish pride. Both of them could have easily beaten Mario, but sabotaged themselves in classic villain fashion.
I do agree that Peach is misrepresented in the movie. Worse, she is a victim of the mentality I ranted about. She has been made worse than poorly written or offensive. Much worse than that. She has been rendered boring. That is the true death of a character. She's a bland shell of her in-game self. Which, if nothing else, was at least memorable. Being competent enough to participate in battles is not a personality.

I really couldn't get passed the pacing of this film. So many big plot points get rushed passed to an extent that my suspension of disbelief just got shattered. Like when Mario gets to the Mushroom Kingdom and meets Toad for the first time. He's just gone from the Brooklyn sewer system, through a trans dimensional pipe, loosing his brother in the process and is now in a weird fantasy world full of giant mushrooms, with a smaller mushroom talking to him. Mario is freaked out by it for a few seconds at most, before just accepting that this is the situation. I get that this is a fantasy film with weird concepts, you need to be able to accept that, but if the characters aren't at least reacting to it organically, then I just can't get invested in the story, because the characters and the world don't feel real.
I have a lot of problems with this films, the generic plot, the lack of real character development, the licenced music choices, but the rushing past major plot beats, with characters going through drastic changes in a matter of seconds is easily my biggest issue.

I grew up playing and loving Mario and Mario games since I was a kid.
I left the theater feeling like I just watched another trailer but where was the actual movie???
It was a bad adventure and bad story telling and bad writing.
Mario's entire struggle is that...he got beat by Donkey Kong temporarily for a minute? Or that his parents didn't like his TV commercial?
That's really weak storytelling. And the pacing was so fast it ruined the movie.
For example Peach and Mario were supposed to go on an adventure to reach the Jungle Kingdom.
But that didn't ever happen, instead they only went on a 1-minute cutscene.
Then Peach comes all the way back to the Toad Kingdom using a Kart in 5 seconds. So then what was the point of the "adventure"? There was none.
This movie was disappointing, it didn't have much that wasn't in the trailers already.
Jack Black's Bowser was a predictable cliché, you get what you expect from Hollywood insiders. I couldn't wait for his scenes to end, it was so typical like every generic Hollywood villain that I could only cringe.
    Everything was kinda inconsequential.
The best thing you could say about this movie is that a 5 year old liked it.
This movie could have been way better while still appealing to the same audience. It simply had bad writing and a bad script.
All the praise you see for the movie is IN SPITE of that because the love for Mario and Nintendo is filling in the gap for an obviously bad movie.

The primary thing I've never understood about the "the Martinet voice would get annoying in a 90 minute film" argument is that, prior to the announcement of the film, nobody was ever saying the voice was annoying. While Mario might not say a lot of full sentences, over the course of an average Mario game you're hearing him make his little random sounds A LOT. Mario's voice has probably been the most consistent sound associated with the franchise for decades. And in addition, the focus on his voice exclusively in the context of a film ignores the greater context that films have in comparison to games, which is to say, in a Mario film, Mario isn't necessarily the sole point-of-view character for the entire length of the story. Add on the fact that even if he's the primary focus character, that doesn't mean he needs to be the one primarily delivering dialogue, especially if he's constantly traveling with a band of other characters like Toad, Peach, and Donkey Kong.
There are so many ways around just having Mario constantly shouting for 90 minutes, and even all of that is overlooking the fact that Charles Martinet is an accomplished voice actor with decades of experience under his belt, and he could "tone down" the voice if needed. But whenever people defend recasting Mario for the film, they act like it was an inevitable force of nature that caused it because otherwise the movie would just be 90 minutes of endless "wahoo"s.

This movie ended up being pretty much what I expected it to be from the moment it was announced that Miyamoto would be supervising the production: basically just Mario doing cool shit with a couple of Hollywood stuff sprinkled around a bit like licensed songs and celebrities as voice actors.
The issue with Miyamoto is that he has a very weird view of what Mario is, and while I don't blame him as he is one of if not the most important creative responsible for the creation of Mario stuff, at this point his vision for the series and what it actually is are just way too different now. The fact that he's also part of the corporate side of Nintendo doesn't help, it feels like now Miyamoto only cares about the money and not Mario as an artistic creation, as weird as that might sound.
What really frustrates me is that it's evident that the people who made this movie love Mario, and it really feels like they could have made it into a masterpiece had they been allowed to take more risks. Everything that could have made this movie better is already there but it feels unpolished. I actually really liked the movie because it just has a lot going for it. They absolutely nailed Bowser's personality, the rivalry between Mario and DK is really fun to see, Peach surprisingly feels very in character despite having a very different personality compared to the games, and the fact that they finally let Mario have an actual character arc fills me with so much joy. But it sucks that even though they didn't go with the actual plot from the games, (which itself is just a very simplified version of the tale of St. George and the dragon, like with other games like Ghosts 'n Goblins), the plot is still very generic and the pacing is so fast that it doesn't even feel like the characters have any real agency, which sucks since that's always the thing that stands out in plot heavy Mario games like the RPGs or Mario Odyssey.
But oh well, if anything, I'm happy the movie turned out okay. I was terrified that this movie was gonna be shit but it wasn't. But I will still dream of a Mario movie as ambitious as the 1993 one, made with as much care as this one, and with that pizzazz that the games and the 1986 movie have.

I think the movie both surpassed and exactly met what I was expecting from it. It at the very least does feel like it came from a place of love for the series. what I think really carried the movie which most people don’t seem to be giving it credit for is the role reversal of peach and Luigi. If peach was the one kidnapped for the majority of the movie then it would be far less investing even with all of the meticulously placed references. Mario saving the mushroom kingdom because of his brother, rather than bc of Peach whom he hardly knows actually gives Mario more of an emotional stake in the story rather than Just being the necessary protagonist needed to drive the already played out story. The main pacing issue with the movie is mainly because it’s second act feels far more like half of a second act than a complete one. It could have been very fun to see more of the worlds peach and Mario traveled through in their brief montage in a way that utilized the many worlds that have been created in the Mario games, which also would’ve solidified their friendship a little bit more. At the same time I could easily see that being really hard to purposely weave into the story without it feeling like filler. Despite the missed potential to both celebrate Mario’s history while also adding some thing new it at the very least hit that Nintendo trademark of making something super enjoyable, but recycled.
This movie can be perfectly encapsulated by Chris Pratt’s performance as Mario- he seemed to reluctant or scared to commit fully to any interpretation of Mario’s voice, just like the movie was too reluctant to commit to any huge changes of the typical Mario formula while still having a decent enough freshness to keep it going.

It got a couple chuckles over me, but overall, I hold this movie as the golden goose for why the average Joe doesn’t understand what makes a good movie. This movie was 90 minutes long and it still felt like they were stretching it. I enjoyed pointing at stuff, I enjoyed some of the jokes. But the voice acting was bland, the plot…didn’t exist, the licensed music didn’t work, and no idea was ever committed to. The intro was pointless, the ending was too long, the Peach marriage arc was like 5 minutes long and once again…did nothing.
This movie sucks…it’s not even good, or decent. The critics gave it a 59% or so and that was too high. This movie needed to stick to one aspect of Mario and flesh it out, not throw 7 Mario aspects in and skim over all of them. We got Luigi’s Mansion, we got isekai, we got the intro to the mushroom Kingdom, we got Donkey Kong Country, we got Mario Kart, we got Mario Odyssey, we got the opening to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. It didn’t let any idea rest and because of that, the conflict doesn’t feel urgent and it never feels like there’s any imminent danger. None of the characters have time to get fleshed out. Mario’s parents tell them they’re fools…they get sucked into the Mushroom kingdom for the next 80 minutes, then you check back in with them for the last minute and for some reason they change their mind despite not having any evidence that the plumbing company would end up being successful and Mario and Luigi are the heroes at the end, despite Mario’s negligence being what led Bowser to Brooklyn and putting everyone in danger…but once again, the final battle is five minutes long, so there’s not any real danger because the have the invincibility star.
Look, I get that it’s a kid’s movie with tons of Easter eggs for long time fans…but this movie is just insulting. They couldn’t find a way to make a 90 minute movie with a single compelling plot point, the only thing grabbing your attention is how quickly things transition from one idea to the other before you can stop to think that it’s stupid. Puss In Boots: The Last Wish is like the 6th Shrek movie or something and that movie was absolutely brilliant, but the Mario movie couldn’t be bothered to try to give anyone an arc. Bowser doesn’t learn any lessons, Peach doesn’t earn any lessons, Mario and Luigi don’t learn any lessons. They basically just go from location to location, reaching a minor inconvenience that they resolve within seconds, and moving on. This is not a movie, this is a commercial, and I’m the schmuck that wasted 10 dollars to see it

A far more appropriate title for this Illumination bait-and-switch Trojan Horse would be something like "Illumination Presents The Super Princess Peach Movie: Feminist Cringe Edition featuring SIMP Mario and Rarely Luigi." The main "plot" isn't the same excuse plot that's standardized in the games. The subverted "plot" for this movie is; The princess isn't the main center of rescue, unlike what she's always been, but this time, she's the star of the show and the sole driving force of the narrative, and she has to find her army to protect her kingdom from the clutches of Bowser... and oh, random loser Mario just magically happens to show up from Earth, and he's the princess' lost puppy who's along for the ride, while Mario's emasculated brother, Luigi the houdini, is kidnapped by Bowser and is MIA for most of the movie's run time, and oh, princesses _practically_ beats up Bowser on her own while the Bros were just the sidekicks in their own origin story.

I'm not sure why the movie introduced Mario with a scene of him effortlessly breezing through a complex platforming environment, to then show him deeply struggling to get to the flag in the practice level. Why make a movie focused on brotherhood, that separates the two brothers for the whole movie? Why end the movie with them getting a star that saves the day for them? The list of questionable decisions goes on and on.
I remember when the Lego movie came out the early criticism would be it was just a cash grab advertisement for Lego, but it wasn't. This movie on the other hand was, and yet no one is criticizing it, because at least something new and mediocre is better than the +11 movie of Fast and Furious.

Great point, those two scenes make no sense in context. Mario is an amazing platformer but struggles on his first attempts in the training scenes. Nothing really flowed well. I also didn't like how cheesy Donkey Kong was made out to be. I was hyped for them going into the Kong kingdom and once they got there I was immediately disappointed.

Chris Pratt isn't even bad in the film. He's the least of the movies problem. In fact I'm baffled by the trailers because it's almost as if someone picked his worst outtake lines to sabotage him.
In the film itself he is way better and I stopped noticing it was Pratt a few minutes in. The movies issues aren't the voice acting it's the plot and editing.

That’s the vibe I was getting from people, and yet like Ghostbusters: Afterlife, they were so blindsided and smacked around by cameos and references that they declared they had seen God.
I refuse to go to Illumination films because they are not at all interested in pushing story forward.
Illumination is like that gag where all Bugs Bunny does is eat a carrot, and an audience goes wild.

Hot take but the 1993 movie has a lot of care put into it with its world building and visuals. And it's story isn't bad if you take away its mario connections. If you took off the mario ties to both of these movies and judge them as movies themselves, the 1993 one is a better movie.
The guys who made the 1993 movie wanted to make their own movie. But didn't have a budget. So they got the rights from nintendo to use super mario bros. So they had a checklist of mario things, but they were pretty mich making their own movie

The 1993 movie is actually a movie. Is is the greatest it could’ve been? No. But it’s FAR from being bad, let alone the worst video game movie.
Literally, the only thing the new movie does better, is the visual and audio aesthetics.
Other than that, it’s some of the most dull “I clapped!” shite I’ve seen.
There’s a reason the critics hate it. Because to understand wtf is going on, you have to be familiar with the games. A good video game adaptation (like Mortal Kombat 1995) doesn’t need to do that. A film that requires prior knowledge of the characters, setting, plot etc before viewing, is not a good movie.

The movie was just too short, and the story was weak, the ending was so abrupt that I was just left feeling empty. I left going, "That was pretty good" but then the disappointment set in after. Usually with a movie you're wanting a sequel because you want more, but I was just like, "Alright." It just reminds me of how Nintendo is so unbelievably scared to do ANYTHING with their IPs. All their games are colorful and flashy but other than that mostly sterile and uninteresting.
