    The key to this job is the be as swift as possible. I've been dishwashers for about 4 months and I've caught as much speed as the dishwasher that has a 15 year tenure washing dishes. Working repetitively let's you create your own techniques and shortcuts that reduce time and still get the job done. Managers love hard workers so just work hard and good things will eventually come. You could even move up to cook or kitchen manager if you want to work in the restaurant industry. Don't let anyone treat you like trash because honestly... Without a dishwasher, the whole restaurant falls to shit.

    I'm a dishwasher at a busy bar in Canada and I've been a dishwasher for 2-3 years and I'm 18. I make good money and I'm really quick. You learn how to be fast and it's better than cooking. I used to be terrible when I started at this bar 6 months ago but I learned to be fast and now I do everything in the back of house from cooking to prepping food to washing dishes. I'm so proud of myself.

    I am a dishwasher, and it's not as bad as some people make it out to be. Always be sure to put a bunch of dishes, and not just one or two. Make sure that your sink is filled with sanitizer that can clean the dishes as it will make it a lot. Yes, it can demand a lot of speed, but it actually isn't that hard to build up if you do it correctly.
    One last tip would be to not waste your time hosing down just one or two dishes for so long as the dishwashing machine may be able to do the work. It can also be a lot of fun if you're doing it with a second dishwasher. Anyhow, best of luck to all of the dishwashers out there!

    Washing dishes was one of the first jobs I ever had. I HATED it at first and feared it a lot because I didn't know what I was doing and I would always get backed up. I was young back when I started and didn't know how to just keep the dishes moving and just over-thought everything. After a little while, I figured out how to wash the dishes quickly and effectively, and I came to absolutely LOVE that job. I just loved to keep everything moving, never getting backed up, and getting what the front and back of the house needed whenever they needed it. LOVED that job.
    If any of you are thinking about getting a job washing dishes or bussing tables, DON'T overthink anything. It is VERY SIMPLE. The main concept is to keep the dish machine running. Rack the plates, spray off or scrape most of the solid foods, and put em through. Put the dishes where they need to go and just keep it moving.
    You guys got this!

    Started my first job as a dishwasher a few days ago and man is it hard! The people training me were working other areas in the kitchen and on top of that spoke very little English. Thankfully it only gets easier the more time you spend in the dish area, as you learn techniques that allow you to maximize efficiency, you'll get into a flow that makes your job so much easier. Don't be afraid to ask questions, as every kitchen operates differently and no single TH-cam video will prepare you for the unique work environment you'll be in. Shout out to all the dishwashers busting their asses for hours each week for not enough pay... From having dirty glass water drip onto your head to scraping nasty food out of sink drains, dishwashers really are the backbone to any restaurant.

Then once it’s been soaked in hot water for at least 5-10 minutes wash them. And try not to over think. When I was at work and the people would bring in stacks of dishes when I’m already behind. If I think about it I get stressed out and makes the job more difficult. Just stay focus and toughen that stuff out. Trust me bro we know how you feel. I have respect for us dishwashers. Not to mention i had to return the dishes to the kitchen, and since its my first day i had no clue where anything went, causing the dishes to pile up. If i didnt have to bring the dishes back to the kitchen it wouldnt be so bad, but with about 100 dishes per every 10 minutes and having to carry them back to the kitchen, it was fucking hell.

      Yh Its pretty hard at the start, you have to get used to it, I was the same bit slow when I started because you have to get used to where all the equipment go's back, put things in right places, but you learn as you go along you will get faster naturally and get into a routine, Its a lot easier after you pick things up, always prioritise on getting plates back on the pass so the chefs have enough for service plus pans back constantly, when you beging at a place it sure helps if you have another person training you showing you the basics anyway.
      Keep with it mate, you will be fine

      I was a dishwasher for 15 years (simultaneous with being a cook and chef in a small restaurant). All hand wash, no machine. I was the fastest, quietest, and most thorough in that time. Probably broke 6 or 7 dishes in that entire period (or, more correctly: incidents* where in some cases multiple dishes went down). Totally taken for granted by most, except for the owners who knew what they had. Once you find your system and refine your techniques you naturally hit a flow and can easily attain efficiency while also doing quality work.

I literally use to go 8 straight hours of fast non stop pace. If you guys do this method trust me they will move you up.

    as a veteran potwasher, who years later lead a kitchen of chefs, potwash for many was the best place to be to get into the zone and be at peace. but to do this you had to get your head into the game of being focused, organized, and fast. each potwasher does the job differently, just like every place has a different setup, as well as the chefs and waiting team deal with it differently.
    if you ever go into a potwash area on your first day, or any shift for that matter. focus on 3 things first, 1. what items are most important right there and then for the chefs or waiting team, possibly they need some plates, and cutlery. so dont use up the time by putting through the large containers.
    2. organize the shitfest you walked into or during your shift, get all the plates, cutlery, containers etc ( differently places have different things), have them all organized so you know whats what and your able to gets more of a clear surface and less danger.
    3. for a tip for the cutlery, spill it into the sink and get the cutlery rack and start organizing it with the tails down, this enables it to come out hopefully streak free and easy to polish. add the cutlery with a space with the dishes or on a flat tray with some cups etc. also dumping it like you did , will end up being a nightmare when you pull it out after its "cleaned" simply becuase it likely hasnt cleaned it, and then you have spend even more time organizing it and polishing it with water stains on it
    extra tip. dont have the plates facing towards you, otherwise you will end up with yourself getting soaking wet and the floor soaked. within an hour you will be depressed. face it to your right so the water goes into the sink.

    I have to manually scrub the food off the plates, bowls, etc. then place them into a rack, pick the rack up, put it into the dishwasher, take it out when it's done and then manually hand dry everything. At the end of busy nights I get bombarded with a LOT of plates, etc. and pots and pans and buckets and utencils. This kitchen is the easy life lol. I don't have a fancy food grinder I have to manually clean the sink-holes with my fingers and wait for the water to go down, I have to manually clean food off the plates with my hands into the trash.

    I've been a dishwasher for over 2 years now and it's really not that bad. It really just depends on what restaurant, the people you work with, and how the dishpit is like. It takes time and a few shifts to get used to it. I created my own system and routine for each shift. My dishpit has 2 sinks. I fill one up for frying pans, and the other is left empty just to put kitchen dishes(pots, inserts, etc) in to fill up with hot soapy water to soak so I can easily scrub shit off them later. Anyway yeah it's all a matter of speed, organization and routine. Only thing that bugs me is ridiculous requests from other staff members but little things like that aren't a big deal if business is slow.

    • @Icybubba
      @Icybubba 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My dishpit consists of 3 sinks, 4 racks, a place waiters and waitresses can place dirty dishes, a sink they can dump left over drinks in, a container filled with water to put silverware in, a commercial dishwasher and I think that is it.
      Sink 1 is for detergent water we got a nice machine that mixes dish detergent and water together and it comes out a tube, Sink 2 is for cleaning and rinsing dishes, and Sink 3 is for sanitizer water which again has a tube that mixes stuff together.

    I been working as a dishwasher for 3 months now. I don't mind the job itself but I hate how the waiter and chefs try to use you like slaves. I work at a hotel restaurant. Some days I absolutely love it, especially when it is very slow and not busy. On a day where reservations are at 100%. I already know I will be there until 3:30am. The head chef likes to tell me I need to get faster but it's impossible when the waitress is constantly asking me to help her buss tables, answer calls for room service and deliver trays to rooms. Not to mention I have to pick up trays off of every floor which takes 30 minutes. It pays me $9 but doesn't give me enough hours. My shift is 6 to10:30 pm but I always end up staying over a few hours off the clock. I don't wanna stay on the clock and do the extra work because then the head chef will start Bitching and then I'll most likely get fired

      PearlLocket exactly. They don't know how slow I am so I don't tell them about the hours I work off the clock. Because if I did , they would either cut my schedule and hire another person altogether or fire me because I work too slow. They recently hired another waitress to help the other one out so that helps me a lot.

    • @pipeslinga21
      @pipeslinga21 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Chan Tak Zee wear gloves made for washing dishes. They are sold online. If you are a woman then use the old fashioned dish washing gloves that are at wall mart. If you are a man you might need to go to home depot to buy rubber gloves. When you go to work just wear rubber gloves and put latex gloves over those gloves. I used to use gloves but its easier for me to scrub and multi task with out the gloves on. If the dishes are too hot then I just pick them up with a rag or towel.but also I have 7 racks so I usual wash 4 racks before I start putting my first rack away. The dishes naturally cool off within a few minutes. Sometimes I don't care and I will just pick the dishes up while they are hot but just switch hands every few seconds.

Ended up crying when the restaurant was about to close. I tried to hold it in until everyone left, the cashier saw me about to cry, but she left so she can give me privacy. Im embarrassed of it honestly, I'm just hoping no one brings it up bc my company loves drama. But to look on the bright side this can be a learning lesson for me, I can look back and see what I done wrong, and try new techniques to clean and dry dishes faster. I would work there and attend college honestly. I did it completely backwards.
      I went to college for 2 years and got my Associates degree in Network Systems Administration. But I didn't work at all during college, I focused on my grades. I graduated in June of this year but haven't had any luck finding a job in my field. So I took the dishwashing job at the end of October.
      So my advice for you is, try to keep the job you have now and go to college as we;;. If you're working a lot of hours there, just ask them if you can get your schedule built around your college schedule. Or if you don't like your job, find another job. I'm sure your employer will work with you

    Learn where all the dishes go in the kitchen an around the restaurant, keep everything organized, all items in their own correct stacks, you will have more space. Always have your hands full, take clean stuff out on your way out, and bring dirty stuff in when you come back. Wait until you have a stack of plates before putting them away, the less trips you make, the more time you have. When putting dishes in the rack, try to hold as many as comfortable in your hands and if you squeeze one side of the sack, or lean it over, you can drop them into the rack all at once if you line it up right.

    I first started as a dishwasher when I was 18 years old for a local restaurant. I kept that up till about half way through college. Then started up again after I graduated. So all in all, it adds up to just over 7 years experience. And I can tell you this:
    It is an important and difficult job. Don't let anyone tell you different.
    Unless of course it's for a huge institution that can afford to hire way more help than they actually need to make the job more attractive to students. To be brutally honest, this video does not describe real dishwashing.

I just put it into the Machine. And have the hot water Loosen them. Then i Rewash them once their soften. Scrub them out. Than put back in machine for 2nd Time. Afterwards. they come out Spotless. Rather than Scrub while their hard. Afterwards. I put away Everything. To make my counter Clean for the next person.

Except I’m efficient AF! That’s why I asked for more money when I started, although, dishwashing does not pay nearly enough for the excellent service that is applied by the worker. Sadly, for this reason I will most likely leave the restaurant for warehousing again. If the pay and benefits where actually realistic I would actually just dishwash. It’s rough but I think I like it better than warehousing.*

    to be honest being a dishwasher in a restaurant is depressing. well at least the one i worked in because they had you washing all the cups, hundreds of silverware, ramekins, plates, pots, trays and pans, refill the line with a ton of plates when the chefs run out and take a tub full of dirty ones back to wash and then they had you cut 3 boxes of potatoes everyday and they were the mini ones, each box had six bags and in each bag was like at least 50 to 100 potatoes and every two hours clean the machine which wasnt to bad but it sucked when you have a shit load of work on busy days and before you leave they had you wash and sweep your work area, then sweep and mop the freezer and take out all the trash and then punch out. i didnt mind the hard work i enjoyed it actually but what brought me down was everyday the bussers just bringing in all the dirty shit to you while they have a nice chat and laugh with everyone while your there all alone going back and forth busting your ass to keep up with all the work and it paid 10 an hour for all that labor lol. but you know what i work in a hotel now as a dishwasher and its awesome cause you work as a team with many different people and get to actually talk and not bust your ass as much as you would usually do by yourself in a restaraunt and way better pay as well. so my advice if you tryna be a dishwasher best be one at a hotel (;
