  • Use the following key to grade yourself on YOUR Ottawa knowledge: 0-3: Have you considered moving outside of town, Marseilles perhaps
4-6: That's as good as I would have done. Good enough.
7-10: Are you being honest here? Do we have an Ottawa Mensa?
    11 + : You are a champion of O-town trivia my friend!

Hello, youngster. I enjoyed your video. Fun facts: do you know about ASSHO Road Test? In the 1950s, Ike wanted to build highways across the US, but they needed hard information about how roads functioned. They looked for cheap, flat land with the worst weather they could find, and set up in Ottawa (times were simpler. Nobody in their right mind would name anything ASSHO anymore). It was a five year project that had paved roads and loaded trucks driving endless loops. Then they studied the surface and structure. My father worked there, so I began elementary school in Shabbona Elementary School, which I understand is no more. Alas!
We lived on State Street. Our next door neighbor, a sweet lady named Dee Smith, had a job painting dials on clocks, and she was on her last legs about the time the Road Test ended. RIP, I remember her fondly.
I guess the Copper Kettle is gone? That was the best restaurant in the area.
Yes, I knew about Zorro, but did you know about Life on the Plains and Among the Diggings? It was published in 1854, written by A Delano, who takes you on a day by day journey across the plains to the California Gold Rush. You may be able to guess where he started from: that's right, people were already leaving Ottawa then!
But are you sure you're from Ottawa? In my day, people in Ottawa had a nasal twang that would drop a wild dog in its tracks. I didn't know about it until we moved to DC and people winced every time I talked. So are you telling me that people in Ottawa speak with their mouths now and not their noses? Aaah, no more standards!

Yes, from here but only since I was 5. I had a friend whose father worked as a state engineer on the AASHO test road. Cheers,
