LINCOLN WAS HERE! OTTAWA, IL TOPS SMALL TOWN AMERICAN CHARTS

- When I breezed through Ottawa, Illinois four years ago, I knew I'd come back; I just didn't know when. That "when" part came in Labor Day Weekend (September 2022), en route to Iowa. It was better than I remembered. Important and interesting to me, first and foremost, for the fact that the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, spent a considerable chunk of time in Ottawa as a traveling lawyer, trying court cases in the Illinois Supreme Court throughout the 1840s and '50s. Ottawa is also the site of the first of 7 Lincoln-Douglas Debates, kicking the tour off in Ottawa's Washington Square on August 21, 1858. Lincoln, the "Railsplitter" went up against the "Little Giant", Stephen Douglas for a U.S. Senate seat. Douglas won the seat, but it was Lincoln who would bask in the glow of a much bigger prize as America's first Republican President two years later. Beyond all that, Ottawa is a flat-out amazing small town, rich with history, beauty and preservation; Ottawa's downtown district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places...and the more recent renovations in Ottawa have this town sparkling! Nice job Don. I've never met an Ottawa I didn't like. As you know, my Dad's side of the family is from Ottawa, Ohio.
That statue of Lincoln-Douglas really shows the height difference between the two. Probably not to a fully accurate scale, but still. The debates centered on slavery. Douglas thought each territory should decide. We know what Lincoln thought.
Ottawa, Ohio doesn't have nearly the history as this Ottawa, but on October 12, 1984 the Ohio Ottawa did have a train whistle stop by President Reagan. The event happened at the still standing depot in downtown Ottawa. A huge crowd listened to his speech...which you can find on the Internet. Reagan could use amps and speakers, unlike President Lincoln during his outside debates.
Really enjoyed learning about Ottawa, Ill. I had never heard of this town. But now I know much about it thanks to you. This is why I follow your channel. I learn so much, and this only motivates me to seek out more about small town America.
Thanks Chuck! I think I'm going to breeze through Ottawa, Ohio on the way to 4-Crown. Maybe I'll stop at the depot where Reagan spoke. Gunna swing through Grafton too. Ottawa, Illinois is a great little town! HMM
@@HistoryMysteryMan It's a pretty neat depot there Don. Notice the unusual NE portion where the station master could peer out.....looking for trains from two directions. Today there is only a N-S active line. But back between 1888 and 1918, the Findlay, Fort Wayne & Western Railroad ran east and west through Ottawa. Today that portion is long gone. Instead it's East and West 4th Street. Most casual observers would never know that two lines intersected there at the depot.
This is one of the reasons I love your Small Town America videos. Keep them coming along with the race related ones too. Thanks Don.
Thanks...and you're welcome Jeff. Glad to hear from you again...HMM
Small town Illinois folks are the salt of the earth kind of people. I know because I am one :)
Could not agree more! HMM
Good video, but you never mention the name of the church. It’s St. Columba Catholic Church.
Did anyone ever say that they don't like the town they live in ???
Yes
