I made a similar trap and it works lovely! I used a mason jar. I took the center round part from the lid and just used the ring. Instead of plastic I had some scrap mesh screen laying around so I cut a piece large enough to cover and still screw on the metal ring. I poked holes about the same size as yours. Mine are loaded with apple cider vinegar, sugar and a little bit of soap (breaks water tension so they could drown if they touch it). Thank you for sharing the tarp tip over the top for shadowing it really makes a difference!
well im having this issue with smaller flies in my kitchen. I just lost the appetite of nice food :l thoguht of doing this but it loks so worked up im too lazy on a weekend
Top notch advice. Fly traps do not have to be very sophisticated to work. I have used these types of traps for years and they work very well. I place them all about the property in the shade and tend them regularly. I must add, the deceased flies make excellent fertilizer. I bury a wad of them at the base of my fruit trees every time a bottle fills up. My house, fortunately, is fly free all summer.
hey so for some reason ifind 20-30 little baby flies appearing in my room i even taped off my room windows and sealed the door while theres food sources outside and downstairs they alway come to my room:( i kill each and every one of them how can i stop this? its got to the point where dis became very frustrating i dont even want to see those ugly things yet i wake up to find 5-6swarming my room and i keep killing them during the day even when i go to sleep i feel like they are still here watefuk? stay away/idiots , i have a chiken stall near my house its from my neighbours and trashcans infront of my window wich is 24/7 sealed
+JOJO - 420 Indoor fly problem...here is a nice little trick. It requires a 20 oz palstic drink cup, a sticky trap (I use scorpion traps, they are the most sticky) and some fish based cat food. Do not bother with the little fly traps that come in the tube...they are useless! Take about 1/2 tea spoon full of the cat food and put it in the bottom of the cup, add about two tablespoons of water...not enough to cover the cat food but enough to keep it moist...now, gently bend the scorpion trap - Careful! You might get stuck...hold it by the edges! Place the folded trap into the mouth of the cup so it resembles an upside down letter "U"...make sure the sticky side is out and well above the rim of the cup..don't place it near window curtains that might get stcuk, on it...and don't do this near pets...they will get stuck 'cause they like cat food, too!!!. Now, place this cup near a light source, like your window. At first it will give off a smell you might notice, but that will go away in a few minutes. Don't let the food dry out...add a little water every day. The strategy is this...the flies love fish smell...they can detect it a thousand times better than humans. They will, of course,go to the source. But, flies are careful, they like to scout their food source first, so they land on something near by...in this case, the perch that is best is right over the food...Bam! Fly lands on the sticky trap and it's over for him/her!...next thing you know, all the fles are stuck...no more flies bothering you> When the food dries up, refill, add a little bait a little water and keep going ...if the sticky trap gets dusty or full of flies, simply toss it and put in a new one. Game over, Baby!
+JOJO - 420 If you sue my outdoor fly traps, you will pretty much have a more pleasant summer. The idea si, give the flies a much more interesting food source than that which they might find inside your home. There is a down side to my traps...after the flies get trapped in them, they begin to rot and the smell can be quite...well, down right disgusting within about ten feet of the traps. But, flies go nuts over it and they will come to that source first above all others rather than your front or back door. But, do not expect to serve drinks and sandwiches within ten feet of these things....Yuk! Ick!
so will this attract more flies to come and see what all the hubub is about and just turn to a never ending battle, or does it actually decrease the number of flies in the area? Thanks, Mike
CoconutsHD should reduce the numbers of flies in the area because it’ll only attract those close enough to sense it, and the ones trapped then can’t breed. Plus decreasing by just one fly earlier in the season will decrease many flies over time!
Make some type of flies bomb and send it to someone you don't like in nice wrapping paper so when they open it blows up releasing thousands of flies in there house lololol
Great vid! Mass population in California. I needed this to help deal with all these flyz. Can you do a follow-up video. On the best way to dispose of the jar contents
thank you very much for giving us a show of how effective your trap is. could you please give a video where you are making it? and any ideas on how to deal with house/fruit flies?
The traps with meat definitely carry an odor of rotten meat so they cannot be placed on ones deck or house. These you’d place literally out near corrals, chicken house-away from people. ACV isn’t so bad though in house or on decks. With all that said-meat is the best attractor, and works the fastest. Agree that they should be changed frequently, if no other reason for the grossness alone.
What's more likely is you're now breeding flies. You're creating a perfect environment for them to live and thrive (which is what draws them there anyway). Once they get in there, they start to multiply. So while I'm sure you're catching plenty of flies, you're also breeding them like crazy. These types of traps should really be refreshed every couple of days.
Thank God, I've got the same problem with ducks! Going to get to work on your great idea. I leave my doors and windows open and have spent far too much money on traps at Tractor Supply. Flies in a room mess with your head! Super idea and video, thanks!
I saw the purchased trap and instantly paused video and jumped on ebay buying one only then did i finish watching you informative video where at the end you tell us how to make one )) all fool me for jumping the gun and boy do they mark up the price on ebay compared to the original site . thanks for you help btw
Thank you for the great video!! Don't know about some of the products you mentioned (things are a little different here in the US), but I'm sure we can make it work. Thank you for the ideas! :)
TY I just did this, yeah, it really gets nasty smelling after dead flies sit in it, and once doing it, every fly in the neighborhood wants it, but it's a mostly vacant jar now. Worked like a charm.
u'd empty it on a daily basis if fed back to chickens,.. I have free range chickens and they eat some stuff u would think was gross, its where they get protein from. I'VE SEEN A CHICKEN EAT A MOUSE
dianna83301 yeah, Jack Lalanne said he never ate chicken after seeing what they did after a "honey wagon" dumped its load on the ground. They ate every speck!
unless you have lazy spiders. I intentionally kept 2 spiders around, one of which was fairly decent size. Still had flies in all three rooms in my apartment this Summer after discovering a poorly installed window screen. Only went away when I started trapping.
Nah we are in Cooma same temps as Christchurch . seen no Mossies in Summer. and only a Lizard type Snakie besties crawl under Garden Shed. Not a Snake. looked more Eel like leggless Lizard I think too short for a Snake :) :) :) Yes Flies but we have Fly Screens
WebOfEvidence Definately! The really big house flies will even eat a small baby of you let them. I have even seen them carry kittens away in their claws. Some of our flies were affected by Chemtrails which caused them to grow to a huge size. Luckily you can hear them coming because their wings sound like a chainsaw.
Problem with this is if they aren't disposed of in a timely manner the live ones may start laying eggs on the deceased ones, after which you'll start having maggots and new flies to deal with. But this downside has to do with all fly catchers of this type not just home made ones. So after the trap gets full of flies to a certain degree its best to kill/dispose of them and start the trap over.
i like your tone...you should do some narrating ......btw does the bait smell bad? cz I use 1 here in CA ....which almost killed my neighbors with the flies
flies are so annoying - i hate them so much. If I have one in my flat it won't live long. No mercy with these useless creatures. If I had a full bottle like this one in the video i would in the end put fire on them! >:-)
I wish you had taught me this, summertime three years ago :) For some unknown reason (My guess would be old cat food, ), my house was inundated with flies. That sunshade feature was excellent advice. Your trap was amazing ! One idea I had for an insect trap was a tube with a small fan at the entrance and some screen wire at the exit. The fan sucks the insects into the tube and blows them to the other end where the screen wire lets the air pass and keeps the insects in. The insects drop into a tray at the bottom of the exit area after they have used up their stores of energy.
Thanks for posting this. I used to catch hundreds of flies, the horses would come to me to get themselves free of flies. I would place a fish net over their eyes scoop up the flies then turn the bottle upside down between my knees and as they headed for the sunlight I would put the cork in the bottle. Thomas Mclean Bones or no bones...they're still alive lol. And PETA tends to display a worldwide reach when it suits them. In any case, the joke has just about run its course. Carry on - )
Can't watch this video. I hate flies. I will go nuts if there is one fly in my house. I won't rest until it is dead. I won't sit outside if there are flies. Now I have a vision of more flies than I see in an entire summer in one place and I still don't have my answer.
A buddy of mine once made some tacos and he deep fried the corn shells in some cooking oil that had been sitting in a pan for a few days on the stove. After everyone had eaten, I showed up for some dinner. I went to fry myself some fresh shells and noticed tiny metallic green and blue floaties in the oil. Upon further inspection, it turned out that there were about 30 flies that had come to the surface of the oil after the oil had cooled. Lucky me. I didn't partake in the feast. =) Everyone was saying how delicious the food was. I never told them what I found. It would have been traumatizing, lol!
I believe "Phototropism" is actually about organisms that grow from light stimulus. Most commonly plants. It can also be used for insects if they are attracted to it like the flying insects to a night light though. So that's probably what you are talking about. But as far as you covering the holes at the top of course that's effective since then it's just black color even after the hole so they can't differentiate it that well. After all vision is merely just light traveling into a creatures eye. So you stopped if being able to see the hole from the inside basically by limiting the light. They basically can't see the hole they came in. But if you made the top lid another color they would differentiate it then and slowly be able to escape.
ziongite Google: 'Phototropism flies'. I learned about house flies being attracted to light and referred to as "phototropic" at Auckland University, when I studied Zoology as part of my M.Sc. (Hons).
Baby will this work on different type flies?? I have noticed ALOT this year and it should be known I just bought a few bird feeders 2 and it seems like it's been attracted 2 my yard now. :(
Very good fly trap. Try to attract Black Soldier Fly with remain vegetable from kitchen bin so then they can laid their egg to grow as maggot and eat maggot fly and pupa...

Everyone was saying how delicious the food was. I never told them what I found. It would have been traumatizing, lol!
she caught enough flies to make FLIES pancakes...
Deceptive. The title says "House Flies" but the trap is attracting Green Bottle flies (a blow fly).
A fly is a fly it goes in house now its house fly so stfu
josh Brz that made laugh though
(Hons).

+GrozOutTV Yeah, and put some vanilla flavoring. Probably higher quality protein than anything else you can buy. And cheaper too.

Very good fly trap. Try to attract Black Soldier Fly with remain vegetable from kitchen bin so then they can laid their egg to grow as maggot and eat maggot fly and pupa...
